1 Symposium on Reputation Repentance & Reputation (Everyone Loves a Reformed Sinner): Rebuilding Reputation in an Age of Instantaneous Communication Friday, April 8, 2011 Presented by: Corporate Communication International at Baruch College/CUNY Hosted by: Pfizer Inc Offered in association with: Council of Communication Management Symposium Panelists and Moderators: Chris Atkins Chris Atkins is Vice President, Communications at Standard & Poore s and, as of May 2, will be joining PricewaterhouseCoopers as its Director of US Communications. He joined Standard & Poor s in June 2006 after 26 years in PR on the agency side. At S&P, he is responsible for all external communications for credit ratings and indices such as the S&P 500. He has been at the forefront of S&P s crisis response regarding the role of ratings in the financial meltdown. Before joining S&P, he was Managing Director of the global corporate practices at Ogilvy PR and Ketchum, serving as senior counselor to, among others, FedEx, the New York Stock Exchange and GE. While at Ketchum, Chris founded the Ketchum Reputation Lab, which used the 20+ year data set from Fortune Magazine s America s Most Admired Corporations survey to develop an analytical tool to inform communications strategy. Chris also served as Chief Operating Officer of the New York office of Burson-Marsteller, and spent several years in the Corporate Group at Hill & Knowlton. A frequent speaker and guest lecturer at NYU and Columbia on the topic of crisis preparedness and response, Chris was named by PR Week as one of the 20 crisis counselors CEOs should have in their speed-dialer. Chris is a member of the Arthur W. Page Society, and a trustee of the Institute for Public Relations. He is the co-author of a book on corporate reputation called Image Wars: Protecting Your Company When There s No Place to Hide, (1989, John Wiley & Sons). He lives with his wife, Lauren Letellier, in Manhattan.
2 Michael B. Goodman, Ph.D. Michael B. Goodman, Ph.D., is Professor at Baruch College/ City University of New York, where he is also Director of the MA Program in Corporate Communication. He is Founder and Director of CCI (Corporate Communication International). He is Adjunct Professor of Corporate Communication at Fairleigh Dickinson University where he was Professor and Director of the MA Program in Corporate and Organizational Communication. He is Visiting Professor of Corporate Communication at Aarhus School of Business (Denmark), University of Johannesburg (South Africa), Bangkok University, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has published widely, including most recently: Corporate Communication: Strategic Adaptation for Global Practice with Peter B. Hirsch and Work with Anyone Anywhere: A Guide to Global Business and Corporate Communication for Executives. Michael is on the Editorial Advisory Board and Associate Editor for North America of Corporate Communication: An International Journal (UK). He is a member of the Arthur W. Page Society; a Fellow of the RSA (The Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce), London; a Fellow of The Society for Technical Communication; and a member of the Board of Directors of the Association for Business Communication. He has been a consultant to more than 40 corporations and institutions on corporate communication, managerial communication, problem-solving, new business proposals, change, and corporate culture. Goodman is General Chair of the Conference on Corporate Communication and serves on the Conference Program Committee. Tracy Benson Kirker Tracy Benson Kirker is Founder and Managing Partner of On the Same Page. Tracy is an industry leader helping organizations foster honest relationships and drive toward shared goals through candid and actionable communication. She counsels senior corporate and line executives, provides strategy and execution support to leadership teams and partners with senior communicators to lead their organizations through transformational change. Prior to founding On the Same Page, Tracy served as a Senior Consultant and Brand Alignment Leader with Towers Perrin, and prior to that, as Global Leader of Brand Engagement at The Empower Group and Practice Leader for Strategic Communication at Brecker & Merryman. Tracy has also served on the corporate side of the desk, leading global communication and change management teams at American Express and KPMG. Tracy has authored several executive-level books and hundreds of articles for IndustryWeek magazine and is a frequent conference and workshop speaker. Tracy served on the Board of Directors for the Council of Communication Management (CCM) for over eight years, and is a Past President of that organization. She served the PR Coalition for four years as a founding member, and has served on the Board of Directors for the New York Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). 2
3 Ted Pile After graduating from J-school at George Washington University, Ted started his communications career with Parade magazine and then migrated over to corporate communications. Over a 30-year span he s held the senior communications post for insurance, building materials and energy companies. Ted joined Alpha Natural Resources to help take the company public in 2005, building their communications and investor relations functions from scratch. From four original employees in 2002, Alpha has grown to become the third-largest coal producer in the United States, and is set to double in size again to 14,000 employees with its planned acquisition of Massey Energy Co. Ted is a former CCM Board member and chief technology officer, and served on the IABC/Washington board as well as NIRI s Small Cap Advisory Committee. He is a board member and strategic planning committee chairman with Faith in Action, a community services agency in Southwest Virginia, and is active with other groups dedicated to eradicating hunger in Appalachia. John Santoro John Santoro is Vice President, Stakeholder Communications, with Pfizer, the world s largest research-based pharmaceutical company. He is the communications lead for Pfizer's Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Freda Lewis-Hall, and is also responsible for Pfizer's annual review, its annual meeting of shareholders, and its annual global communications meeting, as well as for a variety of reputation and policy communications initiatives. He is a member of Pfizer's Senior Management Team. He began his career in 1975 with the communications consulting firm Brecker & Merryman, where his clients included Merck, Honeywell, Chevron, Ford, Caltex Pacific Indonesia, and the New York City Police Department. In 1990, he joined Warner-Lambert as head of HR communications, then became principal speechwriter for two CEOs there. In 2000, he joined Pfizer with that company s acquisition of Warner-Lambert, and served as chief speechwriter for Pfizer s Chairman and CEO. In 2005, he also took on leadership of Pfizer's colleague communications efforts, and in 2007, was promoted to his current position. John is a speaker and writer on corporate communications issues, and editor of the 2005 book, A Call to Action: Taking Back Healthcare for Future Generations. He is also an Adjunct Professor at Seton Hall University s graduate program in Strategic Communications Leadership. He holds a BA in Political Science from Dickinson College and a master s degree in Corporate and Public Communications from Seton Hall. He is past-president of the Council of Communications Management and is the current president of the Board of Directors for The Compassionate Friends, a national organization serving the families of children gone too soon. 3
4 James E. Whaley As Senior Vice President of Communications and Marketing for Siemens Corporation, Jim Whaley is responsible for the strategy, direction and management of this global technology company s corporate communications in the United States. Ranked 30 th on the Fortune Global 500, Siemens has more than $22 billion in annual U.S. sales, exports $2.1 billion from the U.S. and employs over 60,000 employees in all 50 states. Jim is currently leading the execution of the U.S. Answers Campaign, the largest marketing investment in the company s history. This includes the next phase of the Answers advertising campaign that will run in all major media outlets. It positions Siemens as the leader in environmental and sustainable technologies such as renewable energy, healthcare IT, energy efficient buildings and Smart Grid. Jim joined Siemens in 2004 as Vice President of the Siemens Foundation. He became President of the Siemens Foundation in June 2006 and continued to serve in that position until March of 2010 when he became the Foundation s Vice Chairman. Under his tenure, the Foundation expanded its Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement program to all fifty states, recognizing students, teachers and schools for exceptional achievement in AP math and science courses nationally. The Foundation also launched Siemens Teacher Scholarships in collaboration with the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund and United Negro College Fund. This initiative awards college scholarships to encourage minority students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities to pursue teaching careers in science and math. He also initiated Siemens Science Day, a national program created to captivate young students interest in math, science and technology. Previously, Jim served as Director of Communications at the United States Military Academy at West Point. In that position he executed an innovative communications plan in celebration of West Point s 200 th anniversary. This plan resulted in 24 books, eight network television documentaries, and won the 2003 Public Relations Society of America Award of Excellence and the 2003 PR Week Public Campaign of the Year. Jim has more than 20 years of management experience that includes integrated marketing, strategic communications, media relations, internal communications, crisis communications, and community relations. He is a graduate of Lock Haven University where he received his undergraduate degree. He completed his MBA at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. He also attended the Defense Information School (graduate level management), Ft. Meade, MD, and completed the U.S. Army Helicopter Instructor Pilot Course at Fort Rucker, AL. He was a Master Aviator and was awarded the Legion of Merit as well as numerous other awards. He serves on the boards of the New York American Heart Association, Thurgood Marshall College Fund, The New York Hall of Science and the US Chamber of Commerce s Business Civic Leadership Center. 4
5 Program Coordination & Admistration Christina M. Genest Christina (Tina) M. Genest has served as Associate Director of the Corporate Communication International at Baruch College/CUNY since its founding in She has enjoyed an extensive career in executive nonprofit roles including for New Hampshire Legal Assistance, the YWCA (Manchester, NH), Easter Seals (Manchester, NH) and The Forum for US Dialogue (Washington, DC) with whom she served as Executive Director and coordinated citizen conferences in association with the Committee of Youth Organizations of the USSR. She also coordinated community relations activities and managed a corporate contributions program for Digital Equipment Corporation. She has taught undergraduate courses in public relations; administration and management; and Russian History. Tina has served on voluntary boards of directors and committees of numerous social, civic, health care, and educational organizations. She also sat (elected state official) on the Morris Plains (N.J.) Board of Education and, as its president, led a successful building bond referendum campaign. In this capacity, she also served on the Morris School District (Morristown, NJ) Board of Education (appointed). She holds a B.A. in History with a concentration in Russian History and Language from Emmanuel College, Boston; a Master in International Administration from the School for International Training of the Experiment in International Living, now World Learning, Inc.; a Master in Human Services Administration from Antioch New England; and she earned an M.A. in Corporate and Organizational Communication from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Tina is also a certified professional coach. Her work, Cultures, Organizations, and Philanthropy, was published in Corporate Communications: An International Journal, (Vol. 10, No. 4, 2005). Annie Keller Annie Keller is a graduate student in the M.A. in Corporate Communication program at Baruch College/CUNY, where she also works as the Graduate Assistant for Corporate Communication International and the Masters Program in Corporate Communication. In addition to her position at Baruch, she has an internship at Cohn Public Relations. She holds a B.A. in Film & Media Studies from the University of Rochester and an A.S. in Film & Video Production from Full Sail University. Prior to enrolling at Baruch, she worked in the film and television industry as a Script and Continuity Supervisor.
