(VIP), I knew that the program and its mission would need the support of the judicial system. I began this journey first and foremost with one of the most powerful crime fighters and supporter of victims rights that I knew, The Honorable Robert H. Macy, Oklahoma County District Attorney. I was familiar with his reputation of being a tough prosecutor and at first was truly frightened to meet him. I was soon pleasantly surprised to meet a real gentleman with a heart as big as Oklahoma! Mr. Macy was more than pleased to put his stamp of approval on VIP because he believed in the concept and the value of a victims impact panel. His heart was always for the innocent victims of crime and he understood that VIP s purpose was to prevent further drinking and driving tragedies with a program that allowed the victims to participate in that process and promote their healing at the same time. Therefore, Mr. Macy was strongly convicted to recommend as part of every DUI offender s sentence that he or she be court-ordered to attend a victims impact panel as part of their probation requirements. Without Mr. Macy s endorsement 22 years ago and his continued support throughout the following years, VIP would not be where it is today! We all owe him a debt of gratitude for this. For that reason, the VIP Board of Directors voted to name Robert H. Macy as the first Victims Impact Panel of Oklahoma, Inc., Honorary Board Member. In September 2011, Mr. Macy was honored and presented with a plaque by Janella Tears The Honorable Robert H. Macy naming him as an honorary board member. The plaque was presented by Board Member Mst. Sgt. Greg Giltner, Board Member Sgt. Zack Smith, Oklahoma City Police Department; Executive Director Janella Tears; and Jenny Fowler, VIP Victim Advocate. He very graciously accepted the award. (continued on page 2) From Our Director I sincerely hope that everyone enjoys reading our tribute to Mr. Macy. He truly is my hero, not only for helping me start VIP, but also because he personified the way we ALL should strive to be. His love for and dedication to all victims of crime was his reason for living. What a better place this world was because of his passion. I was honored to be allowed to visit him regularly for the last six months and hear his stories and philosophies. He was truly a unique and honorable man whom I will miss immensely. --Janella Tears winter 2012
2 Issue #1 Volume 15 On November 18, 2011, The Honorable Robert H. Macy passed from this life, with his family at his side, at home on his ranch in Newalla, Oklahoma. He joined a lot of other good cowboys on the other side. The intent of VIP s creation was to put an end to needless suffering and deaths on Oklahoma s roadways and to involve victims in the process. The state of Oklahoma backed us in that effort by passing legislation in 1989 to permit Oklahoma courts to order DUI offenders to attend a victims impact panel. Bob Macy will be truly missed in countless ways and it is his spirit of love and care for victims of crime that lives on. Each time a victims impact panel is conducted in the state of Oklahoma, the victims of DUI crashes are given the opportunity to share their loss and their very deep pain with an audience that needs to personally understand the very real consequences of drinking and driving from the very people who are forced to live with their loss every day. Mr. Macy s lifelong goal to support victims and prevent others from becoming victims will forever be the focus of Victims Impact Panel of Oklahoma, Inc. Thank you, Mr. Macy A cowboy will watch the sunset because it is a perfect work of art by the man upstairs. --Unknown Sgt. Zack Smith (left) and Mst. Sgt. Greg Giltner (right) with Mr. Macy after naming him as Honorary VIP Board Member on September 27, 2011
3 Remembering Bob Macy Gene Autry s Code of Honor A cowboy never takes unfair advantage even of an enemy. A cowboy never betrays a trust. He never goes back on his word. A cowboy always tells the truth. A cowboy is kind and gentle to small children, old folks, and animals. A cowboy is free from racial and religious intolerances. A cowboy is always helpful when someone is in trouble A cowboy is always a good worker. A cowboy respects womanhood, his parents, and his nation s laws. A cowboy is clean about his person in thought, word, and deed. 10. A cowboy is a patriot. A tough prosecutor A true cowboy Drift Along Lonely Cowboy by Curley Fletcher In the far away Heavens in distant blue skies, High above in the bright gleaming sun, Is a heaven of rest, for the Great Master s guest, When the Round-up on Earth is all done. Through ever green meadows the riders will stray, In the flush of an Eternal dawn With the Boss by your side through the Heavens you ll ride Drift along, lonely cowboy, drift on. Drift along, lonely cowboy, drift to your new range, There s a Chuckwagon camped there on high. Old time friends you will find, who once left you behind, And we ll all meet you there bye and bye. The Boss of the Round-up will lend you a hand, He ll be waiting for you in the dawn In the campfire s glow are old faces you ll know, Drift along, lonely cowboy, drift on.
4 WHAT S GOING ON INSIDE VIP? Issue #1 Volume 15 NEW PROGRAM OFFERED IN LAWTON! 2012 is already off to a great start! Victims Impact Panel of Oklahoma, Inc. (VIP), is pleased to announce the opening of a brand new VIP program in Lawton, Oklahoma. Our Lawton program will be offered monthly to DUI offenders as part of their probation requirements. No appointment is necessary to attend the program and walk-ins are always welcome! Please call us at (405) for meeting times and location. NEW PROGRAM OFFERED IN MADILL! Victims Impact Panel of Oklahoma, Inc. (VIP), is also offering a VIP program in Marshall County in Madill, Oklahoma. The Madill program will be offered every other month at the Madill City Library. Please call for details about the Madill VIP program. AND WE HAVE A WINNER! Entries were received from talented students all across the state for our VIP Poster Contest. Each year we are so pleased to see so many students respond. This year it was even more difficult to narrow down all the entries to just one, but we are thrilled to announce a winner has been selected. More information will follow with a picture of the student and their artwork. The winning student s drawing will soon be featured in a poster which will be used in school programs all over Oklahoma!
