2 John Maloney, T.D. Minister of State Minister of State at the Department of Health and Children with responsibility for Equality, disability and Mental Health since May 2008, Minister Maloney was born in Portlaoise, Co Laois, he is Married to Patricia McEvoy and has two sons, one daughter. Minister Maloney was first elected 1997 and elected to Dáil Éireann again in May Mark Pollock International Speaker, Sportsman and Entrepreneur Mark Pollock is one of the most inspiring and effective motivational speakers based on his unique life experiences. In 1998, Mark was a student and international rower with a fantastic job offer in London when he suddenly lost his sight. He had been on the crest of a wave as he prepared for his final exams in Trinity College Dublin, but came crashing back to earth with the news that he would never see again. Since then Mark has rebuilt his life and, indeed, has exceeded his achievements of before. Within six months of going blind he was working again and, two years later, he completed a Masters Degree in Business Studies. He has won medals while rowing for Northern Ireland at the 2002 Commonwealth Games, completed six marathons in one week in China s Gobi Desert, raced in the world s most extreme marathon at the North Pole. In July 2006, he completed Ironman Switzerland and later kayaked across the Irish sea (13h50mins, 100km). Mark has successfully built a reputation on the international speaking circuit as being one of the most inspiring and engaging speakers. He co-wrote the popular Making it Happen with Ross Whitaker and has produced a DVD From Acceptance to Achievement: The Journey Of Success. Despite his life-changing difficulties, Mark Pollock has motivated himself to make the most of his opportunities. His incredible presentations have inspired individuals, teams and organisations all over the world to develop intrinsic motivation to stop making excuses and, instead, make it happen. He believes that taking responsibility for your own life is the first step towards achieving your dreams and shows how small steps can lead to big achievement. Caroline Casey CEO of Kanchi Caroline Casey is the founding CEO of Kanchi (formerly The Aisling Foundation) and the O2 Ability Awards and is also an international speaker and adventurer. A social entrepreneur, Caroline set up The Aisling Foundation in 2000, with the aim of enhancing the relationship between disability and society. Under the new name of Kanchi, Caroline will continue to deliver a deeper level of engagement with society, business, media and politics to affect change through positive solution based thinking. Over the past eight years, Caroline has brought a unique blend of leadership and vision to the business and political world in relation to promoting the abilities of those with disabilities on a national and international level. She has received several high profile awards in recognition of her work worldwide. She became the first Irish person to be appointed a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum in In the same year, Caroline was awarded an honorary doctorate from NUI Ireland, became the first Ashoka fellow from Ireland and the UK, and received the Eisenhower Fellowship. In 2007, Caroline is continually invited back to the World Economic Forum in Davos, where she presents on a variety of issues relating to the area of disability and diversity.
3 Rachel Perkins Director of Quality Assurance and User/Carer Experience, South West London and St. George s Mental Health NHS Trust Rachel Perkins is the Director of Quality Assurance and User/Carer Experience at South West London and St. George s Mental Health NHS Trust. Her background is in clinical psychology and prior to taking up her current position she was Clinical Director of Adult Mental Health Services at the Trust. She is also a long term user of mental health services, Vice Chair of Rethink, a member of the Department of Work and Pensions Disability Employment Advisory Committee (DEAC) and a member of the UK cross-government Mental Health and Employment Strategy Steering Group chaired by Dame Carol Black. She has written and spoken widely about recovery and social inclusion and contributes a regular column to Open Mind. She has developed a number of programmes to help people with mental health difficulties to access employment and education including the Pathfinder User Employment Project - a programme established in 1995 to increase employment opportunities within mental health services for people who have themselves experienced mental health problems. Her latest books, written with Julie Repper, are Working Alongside People with Long Term Mental Health Problems (1996, Stanley Thornes), Dilemmas in Community Mental Health Practice: Choice or Control (1998, Radcliffe Medical Press) and Social Inclusion and Recovery: A Model for Mental Health Practice (2003, Balliere Tindall). Mary Davis Over many years Mary Davis has enriched the lives of people with intellectual disabilities through her work to encourage their participation in sport. More significantly perhaps, she has dramatically changed the perceptions and attitudes of society regarding the abilities and limitations of those people s lives and ultimately she changed the way society views the intellectually disabled through the bringing about of Ireland hosting the Special Olympics World Games in However, it is the lasting social impact of this event, which will be Mary Davis s greatest legacy. In the hearts and minds of many the notion of disability has been replaced by ability ; a previously dormant spirit of volunteerism was awoken in Irish society; and the families and carers of many people with intellectual disabilities have been embraced by their communities. Eoin Brawn Entrepreneur Eoin Brawn s motto in life is Make Something Out of Nothing and from an early age demonstrated that he was a natural entrepreneur. While studying at University in Wales he walked into a Police Station and asked them where they got the extra people for their line ups and sold them the idea of recruiting students as extras. He got 10 a line up for each person which helped him get through college and the idea of working in the recruitment industry. He has a passion for sales and believes that the best sales professionals use their personality to sell and if not always asking, you will never get. A native of Dublin, Eoin achieved great success in the recruitment industry in the 1990s. He specialised in accountancy and financial recruitment where he developed new formulas and recruitment skills to become a Big Biller within the financial services markets in Dublin, London, Frankfurt and Bermuda. His nickname in recruitment was The Ideas Man because of his creative approaches and ideas in Client Development and Headhunting which proved to be very successful. Yvonne Madden Employment Facilitator with CSES Having gained considerable experience as an Employment Facilitator with CSES, Yvonne Madden, was appointed as Project Leader with overall responsibility for the implementation, delivery and outcome of the National Pilot Project. Yvonne is a graduate of NUIG holding a BA in Training and Education and has been a member of the IASE since 2004.
