I am amazed thinking back over the last 2 and ½ years since we started working earnestly on developing this chapter. We have accomplished so much and I believe we have filled a need in our commercial real estate industry! I am so grateful to our sponsors, the Board of Directors, our members, and all of those prospective members that haven t joined just yet for making it all possible. When we travel to the CREW events, we consistently hear that we have made great strides and great progress for such a new chapter. It is not possible without a lot of help, hard work and dedication! It has been another great quarter for our chapter and we now head into the busy holiday months. In August, Mayor Chavez was the speaker for our regular meeting. He spoke to us about how he got to where he is today, and gave us his perspective on the impact fee reductions, transportation tax, landscaping at the Big-I, and other items specifically related to commercial real estate. The following week we co-hosted the Real Estate/Construction Mayoral Forum, where all 3 candidates for mayor answered a series of questions specifically pertaining to the construction/real estate industry. This event was attended by over 500 people! In September we had a member s only social event at the Isotopes game. We had a great evening with perfect weather, wonderful networking opportunities, great baseball, food and fun! We also co-hosted the Real Estate/Construction City Council Candidate forum where we were able to hear from each of the candidates up for election. The CREW Annual Convention and Marketplace took place in Boston, MA at the end of the quarter. Stephanie Skaggs and Debbie Dupes attended the convention as board representatives, and Mary Escobar and Justine Meehan were each recipients of a $1,000 scholarship to attend as well! Read more about the meeting on page 2. The Events Committee has been hard at work planning our calendar of events and next year s schedule is already starting to fill up! I am enthusiastic and optimistic when I hear about what they have in store for us in the months to come. See the schedule of events on page 3. We are finalizing our budget for next year and I am happy to report that there will not be any increase in dues. We will have an early-bird discount for those that pay their dues early. If you haven t joined CREW yet, but are considering it this would be a great time to do so! Bring your 2010 dues to the October meeting and receive member benefits for the balance of 2009 at no additional cost!! Dr. Gloria Schunck Professor at MIT Leaders Leaders have a natural tendency to fix their weaknesses but this is exactly the wrong approach, according to David Gergen, a White House adviser to four presidents from Nixon to Clinton and US News and World Report Editor-at-Large. Instead of fixing weaknesses, he says, a good leader should focus on building her strengths to become excellent. Mr. Gergen, the keynote speaker at the recent CREW Network National Convention, stated that it is more important to have a well rounded team than to be a well rounded leader. Being a leader that uses her strengths and builds a team that complements these strengths is the way to successful leadership. Mr. Gergen also commented on the four other qualities of a successful woman leader: Being a good negotiator Knowing how to talk on your feet Exuding an air of self confidence Collaborating with other successful women Finally, Mr. Gergen pointed out that excellent leaders focus on optimism, even if it is learned optimism. Happiness leads to productivity. 2

3 CREW Network-Announces Partnership with Studley Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Network is pleased to announce that it has partnered with international commercial real estate services firm Studley to develop the CREW Network Leadership Academy, a series of programs and events offered throughout 2010 that will provide professional training, leadership skills, and continuing education to women in commercial real estate. The CREW Network Leadership Academy will be comprised of seminars and workshops delivered to the leaders of 68 CREW Network chapters throughout North America, as well as a series of webinars on cutting-edge topics that are being developed with leading commercial real estate schools. Studley s investment in the CREW Network Leadership Academy represents a commitment to developing talent for the field of commercial real estate, shared Jane Snoddy Smith, the 2009 CREW Network president and a partner with Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. We believe, based on its 20-year history of advancing the success of women in commercial real estate, that CREW Network is the best organization to provide women at all stages of their careers with the necessary tools to succeed in this industry, said Michael Colacino, Studley president. How did you get involved in commercial real estate? I happened into the area of commercial real estate somewhat circuitously.

4 Member Spotlight Stephanie Skaggs Stephanie Skaggs is the President of Asset Financing Group, Inc., a nationwide lending source and consulting group in the area of commercial mortgages and business financing. Stephanie is the President-Elect for CREW New Mexico. How did you get involved in commercial real estate? I happened into the area of commercial real estate somewhat circuitously. Previously, I spent about 10 years in the area of aerospace fire protection. I had started a consulting business in the early 1990 s related to fire protection and environmental sciences. However, with three young children at home and travelling for my job sometimes 3 to 4 weeks out of the month, I decided I needed a career change. I wanted to do something more on the local level. I had used some creative financing practices with my previous consulting business and I found this aspect of business very interesting, so I decided to make a career change into business financing and commercial mortgages. I love to help people and it is very rewarding to assist other business owners realize their financial dreams. Now, I work with business owners and real estate professionals to analyze projects and secure financing. My knowledge of what lenders look for in business and real estate transactions helps my clients to achieve the financing results they desire. What views do you have for CREW NM 2010? Despite CREW NM s infancy, the organization has had some great achievements so far. We have had some amazing presentations and we will continue bringing high-quality speakers to the bi-monthly meetings. Our focus has been on personal success stories in an effort to provide inspiration and information to our membership. We will continue to offer personal and professional success stories next year along with programs on effective networking, going Green in commercial real estate, and dealing with multi-generational issues in the workplace. Because networking is such a powerful resource in business, we will be providing a number of social venues to network with other professional women in the industry. We will be undertaking another community outreach project next year since our previous two have been so successful. I would like to further promote the national network aspect of CREW because it is so powerful to belong to an organization of over 8000 women across the country and to have resources, mentors, and friends in different markets. I would like to see our membership grow by at least 10 percent next year. I would like for the year 2010 to be the turn-around point for a lot of business women. My philosophy is that we need to look for ways to make lemonade out of lemons and not focus on the bad times. What would you like to share with us about you? I have been married for 24 years to Mike Skaggs who is a manager at Sandia National Laboratory. We have three children, Michelle - a sophomore at New Mexico State University studying Mechanical Engineering, and Jason and Krista, both sophomores at La Cueva High School.
