4 Robert G. Lavery Municipal Court Judge Judge Robert G. Lavery has served as the Alliance Municipal Court Judge since January Prior to becoming a judge, he was a practicing attorney engaged in the general practice of law for nineteen years. Judge Lavery graduated from Alliance High School in 1969, Bowling Green State University in 1973, and the University of Toledo College of Law in Judge Lavery was a prosecuting attorney in the Alliance Municipal Court from 1977 to He has also served on the Alliance Civil Service Commission and was appointed special counsel for the Ohio Attorney General s Office by Betty Montgomery. Judge Lavery was elected Alliance City Council President in 1987 and Alliance s Director of Law in Professionally, he received Robert D. Horowitz, Stark County Prosecutor s Voices for Victims Award in October 1998 and the Thomas J. Moyer, Chief Justice for the Supreme Court of Ohio s Court Mediation Program Citation in April In June 1986, Lavery was recognized by the Stark County Community Action Agency for loyal and dedicated commitment to the poor and disadvantaged. More recently, Judge Lavery received the Distinguished Alumni Award for the Alliance City schools in October 2007 and the Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Community Award for racial harmony and social justice by the Diversity Initiatives Steering Committee at Mount Union College in January He was also selected as the Grand Parade Marshall for the Carnation Festival in August Judge Lavery has been active in many civic and charitable organizations. Currently, he is a counselor for the American Legions Boys State program, an honorary member of the Alliance Negro History Club and a life member of the N.A.A.C.P. He is the Sunday school teacher for the Senior Bible Class at St. Paul s Lutheran Church. Robert Lavery is married, a resident of Alliance, and has two adult daughters. MaryAnne Carper Clerk of Court MaryAnne Carper is a twenty-six year resident of Stark County. She attended Ohio Northern University after graduating from Center High School in Monaca, PA. MaryAnne was elected Alliance Municipal Clerk of Court in November 2007, and is currently serving her second year in office. She has worked in local government for fifteen years. She is a member of the Alliance Woman s Club and serves on the Board of Trustees as the Assistant Treasurer; Ways and Means; Alliance Garden Club; Alliance Area Republican Club; and teaches Sunday school for the three- and four-year-olds at the Alliance First Assembly of God. MaryAnne resides in Lexington Township with her husband Jeff.
