President s Letter Sea Research Foundation is on the move Sea Research Foundation had a watershed year in We began the year having recently signed off on a major debt restructure. We shed $15 million of long-term debt, which fundamentally improved everything about our financial platform. Our annual debt service fell by 50 percent, which allows us to function better and invest our resources more wisely in programming and in our capital infrastructure. We also raised $11 million, a record amount for this organization. We re grateful to all who are supporting our comprehensive campaign. We re proud that every member of our board of trustees and a record number of our employees, over 40 percent, participated in the campaign. During 2011, we took over the management of The JASON Project from National Geographic Society. This is a key opportunity for our organization. It strengthens our Immersion Learning program, which is already well-regarded and serving many kids nationally, and brings together our after-school and in-school STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programming. STEM education is important to economic development. In the state of Connecticut, for example, it s been noted by many that there is no shortage of jobs. There are thousands of jobs available, but not enough people with the appropriate qualifications STEM training and competency to fill those jobs. This is a significant gap and Sea Research plays a role in helping to bridge that gap. Biological research, particularly with marine mammals, is also a major component of our institution. We made major investments in this area during 2011 and will continue to do so going forward. Biological and marine science research is critically important to how we understand our oceans and the waterways that feed into them, and it s a primary part of our mission to inspire people to care about the oceans. As we come into 2012, we anticipate continued growth in earned income and stability in grant funding, despite the economic challenges. We re confident that we will see stability and continued growth on the philanthropic side as well. People want to invest in a winner and Sea Research Foundation is a winning organization all around. Dr. Stephen M. Coan President & CEO 4

2011 Highlights AZA Reaccreditation In March, the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) reaccredited Mystic Aquarium for a four-year term. AZA accreditation is the highest measure of recognition a living animal institution can achieve and fewer than 10% of the approximately 2,400 animal exhibitors licensed by the United States Department of Agriculture are AZA accredited. Though an extensive voluntary process which included reviews of our animal care, breeding practices, safety standards, cleanliness, facility upkeep, guest services, conservation, education, research and financial condition accreditation dovetails with our fundamental responsibility to provide the utmost care and safety for our animals and our animal care team, and is a tribute to our board of trustees, staff and many aquarium members and supporters. Debt restructure secures Sea Research s financial health Thanks to a major debt restructure, 2011 got off to a great start. Congressman Joe Courtney led Connecticut and Rhode Island congressional delegations throughout several years of negotiations with Citibank, which resulted in a $15 million reduction of our long-term debt to $19 million. By the end of 2012, we will reduce our long-term debt to $14 million, for additional annual debt service savings of over $1.6 million. We thank trustees Dan Verdier, Charles Gill and Jamie O Connell, Chief Financial Officer Denise Armstrong, and Corporate Counsel and Secretary of the Corporation Steve Hazard for their crucial roles. We are also grateful for the in-kind services of The Blackstone Group; Wachtel, Lipton, Rosen and Katz; and Roy Filkoff, Brendan Fox, Janet Werner and their respective teams. We are particularly grateful to Citibank for their recognition of Sea Research s important mission and willingess to work toward a solution. 5

Charity Navigator gives Sea Research top marks Sea Research s ability to sustain and grow its important mission of education, research and exploration received a distinctive boost in October. Charity Navigator, a nonprofit organization that analyzes the financial and managerial health of more than 5,000 charities nationwide to help people make intelligent giving decisions, named Sea Research one of America s exceptional charities. Our four-star rating, the top category provided by Charity Navigator, means that Sea Research exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its cause. This expert, impartial opinion affirms the trust our many sponsors and donors have placed in our efforts throughout the years. Meet Naluark, Mystic Aquarium s new beluga whale Following two truck transfers and a chartered flight, Naluark (Na-LOO-ark), a male beluga whale from Chicago s John G. Shedd Aquarium, arrived at Mystic Aquarium in October. Born in 1986, he weighs 2,100 pounds and is just over 13 feet long. Naluark, an Inuit word meaning whitened skin, has sired three calves at Shedd, and it s hoped he will breed with either Naku or Kela, our two females. A beluga calf would contribute significantly to ongoing beluga research and elevate our understanding of beluga behaviors, social interactions, and the connections between mother and calf health. Crittercam: A view from the wild side In 2011, Mystic Aquarium visitors experienced the world through animals eyes. National Geographic s traveling Crittercam exhibit revealed the secret lives of animals including great white sharks, humpback whales and penguins through video, interviews with scientists, artifacts and more, all presented in dynamic, hands-on displays. Crittercam, a compact video camera fitted to wild animals for a brief period, has been safely worn by more than 60 animal host species in the past 23 years, and has provided priceless information about their habitats, hunting and foraging needs, behavior and more. Scientists use this information to better protect these animals and their environments, and kindle respect and appreciation for conservation the world over. 6

2011 Highlights Birds of Prey Summer Series A red-tailed hawk, eastern screech owl, American kestrel, two barred owls and a great horned owl descended on Mystic Aquarium for a special Birds of Prey Summer Series, presented in partnership with the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. Each featured raptor had been rescued after life-threatening injuries and nursed back to health by caring individuals and organizations. This 15-year-old great horned owl from Alaska, for example, was wounded by a gunshot when a fledgling and had his wing amputated. Three other animals were hit by cars and one fell from her nest as a hatchling. After meeting the birds, participants enjoyed a lively Q&A with Audubon staff. Zoom in with the Omniscope Imagine using a telescope to peer into a fish tank the eyeballs of a fish, its delicate scales and pulsating gills would zoom up in super magnified form. That is precisely what the OmniScope does. At our new William Kelley OmniScope exhibit, two interactive touch screens let visitors view incredible close-up images of marine life and learn about OmniScope inventor, Bill Kelley. Bill was Mystic Aquarium s founding president, trustee emeritus and steadfast friend. He was also inventor of artificial sea water, Instant Ocean, a product used in public aquariums, university laboratories and home aquariums worldwide. Bill passed away February 8, 2011, at age 93, and remains beloved and respected by all who knew him. Faces of Our Planet Returns In early 2011, Sea Research, National Geographic Live and the Garde Arts Center presented the second season of Faces of Our Planet, a five-part series that revealed the mysteries, magnificence and discoveries of the world s human, animal and geographic faces. Through film, live performance and multimedia presentations, leading scientists, explorers and entertainers on the frontier of innovation provided local audiences with inspiring views of the world like the flooded caves of the Bahamas; the first-ever map of human migration created using DNA from participants around the world; and the musical and spiritual alchemy of Ladysmith Black Mambazo to help foster a deeper appreciation of our planet. 7

Campaign to Help Protect Our Oceans Hundreds of donors and corporate sponsors gave generously to Sea Research s Campaign to Help Protect Our Oceans. Of the record $11 million received, $1 million from United Technologies Corporation and $1 million from the State of Connecticut has transformed the aquarium s former Challenge of the Deep exhibit hall into the new Ocean Exploration Center, a world class, interactive museum featuring our new Titanic 12,450 Feet Below exhibit and other fascinating deep-sea exploration displays. To propel our research efforts, $1.26 million was raised for Sea Research s new Research Center, including a $1 million gift presented by Chairman of the Board Dr. George M. Milne, Jr., and his wife, Carol. Foxwoods Marine Theater Through the leadership of Foxwoods Resort Casino President and CEO Scott Butera, and Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Council Chairman and Sea Research Trustee Rodney Butler, Foxwoods came on board in 2011 as our Marine Theater sponsor. Now called the Foxwoods Marine Theater, the name change honors our close neighbor and friend who in the 1990s provided a $5 million gift that brought our Arctic Coast exhibit to life. Operated by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation, Foxwoods sponsorship provides new opportunities for aquarium members and Foxwoods Dream Rewards members, and supports the popular home of our California sea lions. Daily shows allow guests to learn about these amazing animals as they interact with their trainers and show off their behaviors. Launching young scientists with The JASON Project Students have unparalleled opportunities to explore the world beyond their classroom with The JASON Project s dynamic, multimedia, STEM-based curricula. Through this international science education program, scientists eager to share their knowledge and enthusiasm reach millions of students globally and inspire their excitement for topics including weather, ecology, energy and geology. Mystic Aquarium admits over 24,000 for free Mystic Aquarium s neighboring Connecticut and Rhode Island towns got a big thank you! for their support in Three spring Your Town weekends beckoned more than 18,000 guests with free admission, and during December s Festival of Lights, nearly 6,000 guests brought a record five tons of food for United Way s Gemma Moran Food Center, their only cost to enjoy luminaria-lined walkways, holiday music, face painters, storytellers, and visits from Santa and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Many commented that they had been unable to visit the aquarium for several years due to the bad economy and were thrilled by the chance to bring the whole family. 11

Sea Research CEO commences distinguished lecture series at the Metropolitan Club With 70% of Earth s surface covered by water, maintaining the health of the planet s intricate web of oceans, marshlands, tidal areas, lakes, rivers and streams is critical to human and economic wellbeing. In October, Sea Research President & CEO Dr. Stephen M. Coan shared his insights at the Metropolitan Club in New York City as part of a lecture series presented by Robert L. Dilenschneider, founder and principal of The Dilenschneider Group. Dr. Coan spoke about the influence and impact of water and environmental policy on our nation and the world. New partnership renews beluga research in High Arctic Nowhere else on Earth do thousands of beluga whales gather every summer except at Cunningham Inlet, 500 miles north of the Arctic Circle in Nunavut, Canada. Amassed to play, molt, mate and nurse their young, this beluga population has not been studied since the late Sea Research Scientist and Research Director Dr. David St. Aubin conducted research there in the 1990s. To better form a scientific baseline for wild beluga health, Sea Research formed a new partnership with Arctic Watch Beluga Foundation, where, beginning in 2012, our scientists will observe and collect data on the belugas, consider efforts to protect their summer haven and share their findings. Kudos for Mystic Aquarium animal trainers Mystic Aquarium brought home top awards during September s International Marine Animal Trainers Association annual conference in Miami, Fla. Earning first place for Husbandry Behavior of the Year, our trainers developed African penguin behavior modification to obtain regular blood samples without physical restraint by relying on the penguins natural instinct to develop lasting relationships. Earning second place for Behavioral Training, our trainers developed a plan that transformed three green sea lion pups into well-rounded, experienced animals integrated into multiple social groups and habitats. 12

Known as Instant Ocean, he tested it at the first aquarium he founded, the Aquarium of Niagara, in Today this product is used in public aquariums, university laboratories and home aquariums around the world. Bill was also a lover of all things astronomic since age 10, when he built his first telescope from salvaged parts in his home town of Elyria, Ohio, in The OmniScope, Bill s last invention and gift to Mystic Aquarium, is symbolic of his rich imagination and ingenious ability to give ideas life. Though Bill passed away February 8, 2011, at age 93, we re thankful his legacy lives on at Mystic Aquarium. 18

Aquatic Research Nature never equipped ocean dwelling creatures to withstand human-engineered threats such as pollution, climate change, oil and gas exploration, excessive harvesting, entanglement and shipping traffic. So how do these stressors affect marine animal health? What is the impact on their immune system? What are the implications for human health? Sea Research Foundation s aquatic research team explores these critical questions by studying many species, including beluga whales and endangered African penguins. From our in-house research, we create baseline profiles of robust animal health that we compare to wild populations from the High Arctic to the Cape of South Africa to assess potential problems, illuminate pressing issues and validate concerns many like-minded citizens, scientists and organizations share. Through these efforts, Sea Research works to accelerate meaningful environmental conservation and preserve the diversity of species for generations to come Milestones and Achievements New Aquatic Research Strategic Plan The Scientific Advisory Council formed in 2011 created a new strategic plan; the components to build a new research center, secure grants, form partnerships and hire scientists are well underway. Council participants include luminaries from academia, other aquariums, corporations and Sea Research s board of trustees. George and Carol Milne Research Center Approved in 2011, the new George and Carol Milne Research Center will break ground in fall Funded in part with a $1 million gift from the Milnes, it will integrate water quality, veterinary care and biological research functions into one 6,000-square-foot facility, and provide room to expand our scientific staff and research pursuits. 19

AQUATIC RESEARCH SPANNING THE GLOBE 20

Research Grants The research team received strong financial support from many quarters throughout 2011, including: A $190,000 education and research grant from the North Slope Borough, Ala., mayor s office to advance beluga research in Point Lay, Ala., and stimulate native students and the community s excitement about science and beluga biology. A $75,000 grant from The Alaska Fish and Wildlife Fund, through Conoco Phillips, to equip a wild beluga with a Crittercam in 2012, which will help identify the habitat range of these elusive animals and establish baseline health parameters before additional environmental and anthropogenic impact. Three grants totaling $270,000 from The Office of Naval Research to study the biology of stress in belugas and dolphins. A $44,000 grant from NOAA, through the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation, to conduct and apply the science of marine community ecology to support management of National Marine Sanctuaries. A $158,000 grant from NOAA, through Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, to continue a 12-year study of a marine protected area in Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. New Staff Scientist Dr. Peter Auster, a professor emeritus of University of Connecticut, joined Sea Research in 2011 to focus on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity in the ocean. A marine ecologist, Dr. Auster has spent the last 30 years studying the ecological effects of fishing worldwide, one of the most pervasive of direct human impacts in the sea, and developing a scientific basis for using marine protected areas as a conservation tool. Laura Thompson: Revealing immunological mysteries through research Research Assistant Laura Thompson explores some fascinating questions at Sea Research Foundation, such as how marine animals immune systems are adapted to diving. Excited to be the first to investigate this idea, she uses a pressure chamber to test blood samples and build her understanding. Laura also examines how stressors may impact immune function during diving, and how this may be related to changes in stranding patterns or the relatively new occurrence of diseases resembling dive-related injuries such as decompression sickness. Growing up, Laura always wanted to be a marine biologist and often visited Mystic Aquarium from her Attleboro, Mass., home. She was turned on to immunology research working with Dr. Tracy Romano, executive vice president for research and zoological operations, during a summer college internship. In 2006, Laura received her First Class BSC in marine and freshwater biology from Queen Mary College at the University of London. After graduation, she joined our marine animal rescue team and, in 2008, entered University of Connecticut s Ph.D. program in oceanography. With Dr. Romano as her advisor, Laura looks forward to graduating in 2013 and enjoying expanded opportunities to study beluga whales and other compelling topics. 21

Deep-Sea Exploration The deep sea is the largest museum on Earth. Within its cold dark waters lay secrets untold: glorious creatures, wondrous habitats, natural phenomenon and sunken remnants of human history. Unlocking their mysteries and sharing the discoveries is at the heart of Sea Research Foundation s exploration mission. Dr. Robert Ballard, widely known for discovering Titanic, captains our deep-sea exploration program through the Institute for Exploration (IFE). From aboard E/V Nautilus, he and his team of scientists and technology experts use state-of-the-art telepresence technology to enable real-time expedition participation for millions of scientists, educators, students and fascinated fans worldwide. E/V Nautilus field season lasts only a few months each summer, but global outreach through film, education, digital media and more is year-round. These combined efforts ignite interest and kindle the Sea Research ethic to respect, conserve and protect our oceans Milestones and Achievements In partnership with Ocean Exploration Trust, University of Rhode Island, NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research, and National Geographic Society, IFE advances our mission through deep-sea discovery, education and outreach technology. Ocean Exploration During the 2011 field season, Dr. Ballard and his team investigated the Black, Mediterranean and Aegean Seas and Eastern Atlantic regions, and hosted 186 participants from 19 countries, illustrating E/V Nautilus power to bring nations together to promote scientific enlightenment. While at sea, they revealed many discoveries including: The oldest, highly-preserved shipwreck yet discovered in the Black Sea, dating to ca. 500 BCE. In the Aegean Sea, a supersaturated level of CO2 inside a submerged volcanic cone, which, if erupted, could imperil nearby Greek island residents. Gas seeps off the coast of Israel, which could possibly be tapped to ease the nation s foreign oil dependence. 22

Education & Outreach Technology Since E/V Nautilus first set sail in 2009, Dr. Ballard and his team have reached an estimated 14 million people worldwide. A platform for lifelong learning, E/V Nautilus encompasses broad-scale outreach, internships and on-the-job training. K-12 STEM education programs which feature virtual field trips and over-the-shoulder views of real-time discoveries spark kids and teens paths toward STEM-based careers. In 2011: Nineteen educators-at-sea explained findings, the science behind the discoveries and life aboard ship to people worldwide. Ten undergraduate and 36 graduate student interns joined the crew for oceanographic science and engineering training. Nautiluslive.org produced 235 on-demand expedition summary videos. In August 2011, hits skyrocketed when the website was embedded in National Geographic Society s Oceans Portal. More than 29,000 guests participated in live and post expedition presentations at IFE s premier informal public outreach venue Mystic Aquarium s 50-seat Nautilus Live Theater. Eleven Exploration Command Centers across the U.S. transmitted live feeds and featured the same exclusive opportunities as Nautilus Live Theater. 100% INCREASE OVER 2010= NAUTILUS LIVE THEATER 486 LIVE THEATER SEATS 50 PRESENTATIONS 300 POST-EXPEDITION 2011 FIELD SEASON 23 29,000 GUESTS PARTICIPATED

Bismarck to Nautilus: Michael Brennan s journey to the scientific life Since 2006, Michael Brennan has participated in numerous deep-sea expeditions with Dr. Robert Ballard s team, and in 2010 began serving as expedition leader and chief scientist aboard E/V Nautilus. But Mike first got hooked on deep-sea exploration in the early 1990s. During a fourth grade field trip to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, he saw Dr. Ballard s documentary film Search for the Battleship Bismarck, and later caught The JASON Project s live broadcast from the Galapagos Islands. Fast forward to April 1997: Mike is a high school freshman and JASON Student Argonaut on an 11-day expedition to Yellowstone National Park. There he discovers his love for geology and works alongside Dr. Ballard for the first time. Mike channeled these experiences and passion into his education, earning an undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College in geology and anthropology in 2004, and a master s degree in history from the University of Rhode Island. Mike also received his Ph.D. in oceanography from URI on March 20, 2012, with Dr. Ballard, his advisor and primary professor, by his side. 24

Our formal and informal education programs: EDUCATING OVER 2 MILLION WORLDWIDE Strengthen kids interest and success in STEM education and career choices. Narrow the achievement gap, are inclusive of special needs and at-risk kids, and raise the academic bar for K-12 students. Promote care for our ocean planet. Mystic Aquarium, The JASON Project and Immersion Learning, Sea Research s three education entities, spur the accomplishments and broaden the horizons for over 2 million kids each year across more than 170 countries a critical step to creating a worldwide conservation ethic in the next generation. 25

2011 Milestones and Achievements Mystic Aquarium Mystic Aquarium offers something for everyone. Hands-on school programs, camps, overnights and career programs promote ocean literacy, while year-round conservation programs acquaint participants with our research efforts, fortify family bonds and foster appreciation for our aquatic world. In 2011: Sea School, the nation s only aquarium-based, licensed preschool, celebrated its first full year of enrollment. We provided 1,000 outreach programs and 700 on-site classroom programs. Funded by the National Science Foundation, we partnered with COSEE-TEK (Center for Ocean Science Education Excellence Technology and Engineering for Knowledge) to catalyze ocean science education through introduction of undersea technologies. Representatives from our teen Youth Conservation Corps participated in the Coastal America Student Summit on Oceans and Climates in Washington, D.C. Special needs students, ages 15 to 21, learned work and life skills through a new community classroom initiative with Stonington (Conn.) High School. More than $100,000 in grant funding brought the wonders of the sea to urban area students in Connecticut and South County Rhode Island. Through seven conservation events, 18,000 people learned about ocean health, which spurred their continued personal conservation efforts and commitment. EDUCATION SPANNING THE GLOBE 50 U.S. STATES 170+ COUNTRIES 2 MILLION+ STUDENTS The JASON Project JASON inspires and educates kids everywhere through real science and exploration, and our award-winning, standardsbased classroom programs provide multiple pathways to STEM content. Through a robust online platform and interactive live events, simulations, games and videos, students are placed in demanding, real-world situations where they are connected with top scientists. In 2011: JASON released Terminal Velocity, a new curriculum that focuses on physics and includes extensive information about the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. JASON s E/V Nautilus-based digital labs and curricula reached an estimated 400,000 students. Nine JASON Student Argonauts and four JASON Educator Argonauts worked transit legs aboard E/V Nautilus. In May, over 21,000 viewers participated in the live webcast Meet Ocean Explorers Robert Ballard and Katy Croff Bell. 26

Immersion Learning Through fun, hands-on activities and games, an interactive website and live interactions with scientists, Immersion s proven academic enrichment programs bring the thrill of scientific discovery to kids in after-school programs and summer camps. A great complement to JASON s classroom curricula, Immersion helps increase graduation rates, improve science literacy and inspire youth to pursue STEM careers. In 2011: The United States Department of Justice awarded $1 million to implement Immersion Mentoring at 14 Boys & Girls Clubs nationwide. Immersion secured a $63,000 contract with the U.S. Air Force and a $79,000 contract with Milwaukee Public Schools to train staff and implement Immersion programs with youth in after-school and summer camp programs. Immersion developed and piloted E/V Nautilus-based curriculum. As part of a key strategic initiative, Immersion advanced the integration of its programs into JASON. Tashawn Reese: Forging an ocean-based education from landlocked Indiana When it comes to ocean science Tashawn Reese, 17, is on fire. At the Boys & Girls Club of St. Joseph County, Ind., he jumped into Immersion Learning s hands-on experiments when he was 10 years old, and in 2009 his Club s Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) team won the Shedd Aquarium Midwest MATE ROV Regional Competition in Chicago, advancing to the international competition in Buzzards Bay, Mass. There he befriended teams from Scotland and China, and saw real ROVs and jellyfish the Northern Lights of the sea for the first time. Tashawn now mentors younger kids in ROV building and operating skills. In 2011, after a rigorous application process, he and fellow Club member Devyn Jackson and Tashawn s mother, Lucinda Reese, a Club educator, were selected to serve as JASON Argonauts. Tashawn was ecstatic and the feeling lasted through summer boot camp prep in Mystic, stepping up the gangway in Greece and joining Dr. Ballard aboard E/V Nautilus for four days at sea in September Tashawn s experiences with JASON and Immersion continue to help prepare him for college and a future career in ocean sciences. 27

Development Sea Research Foundation s development team champions our cause by building awareness, inspiring connection and securing funding. They reach out and engage individuals, small businesses, corporations, organizations, foundations and government entities nationwide concerned about the health of our planet and keen to foster stewardship in the upcoming generation. Through these efforts, Sea Research raised more than $11 million in 2011, a striking achievement that strengthens our financial position and ensures the continued vitality of our aquarium animals and their habitats, and education, research and exploration efforts crucial to ocean conservation. Our sponsors generosity also allows us and each of them to connect to a greater world community of concerned individuals and organizations passionate about protecting our oceans and all life that dwells there Milestones and Achievements Ocean Commotion Gala Nearly 400 loyal friends joined our annual Ocean Commotion Gala in September. Held at Mystic Aquarium, this lively, sold out evening honored our many Stars of the Sea, those whose essential aid advanced Sea Research s mission by $500,000. Topping off the evening, Trustee Clay Maitland announced his $100,000 gift to support our deep-sea exploration efforts. Sea Research staff and volunteers pledged more than $300,000 in 2011 More than 40% of our staff and volunteers pledged financial support to Sea Research in 2011, far exceeding national benchmarks for employee giving. We are honored by their generosity and dedication to our mission. 28

Capital Campaign Hundreds of donors and corporate sponsors gave generously to Sea Research s Campaign to Help Protect Our Oceans. Of the record $11.8 million received, $1 million from United Technologies Corporation and $1 million from the State of Connecticut has transformed the aquarium s former Challenge of the Deep exhibit hall into the new Ocean Exploration Center, a world class, interactive museum featuring our new Titanic 12,450 Feet Below exhibit and other fascinating deep-sea exploration displays. CAMPAIGN TO PROTECT Campaign to Protect OUR OCEANS Our Oceans To propel our research efforts, $1.26 million was raised for Sea Research s new Research Center, including a $1 million gift presented by Chairman of the Board Dr. George M. Milne, Jr., and his wife, Carol. Charity Navigator gives Sea Research top marks Sea Research s ability to sustain and grow its important mission of education, exploration and research received a distinctive boost in October. $1 1,7 6 3,6 23 } Trustees: $4,626,488 } Government: $3,404,524 } Major Events: $1,622,122 } Corporations & Foundations: $839,955 } Community: $450,565 } Lead Gifts: $410,000 } Employees & Volunteers: $409,969 Volunteer Dick Katz: Paving the way for future scientists In another life Dick Katz would have been a marine ecologist. Now retired, this former radiologist found the perfect outlet for his lifelong hobby volunteering at Mystic Aquarium. He began in 2008 as a docent and now also works behind the scenes with his favorite fish and invertebrates. Only one thing troubled him: some of the college students he met couldn t afford their tuition and had dropped out of school. When Dick started college, he couldn t afford tuition either, but as a New York resident, he received free tuition from colleges there, all the way through medical school. Now it was time to give back, and in 2011 he funded the $200,000 Dick and Tracy Scholarship. Open only to Sea Research volunteers and employees, the scholarship awarded three students $3,000-$5,000 each toward their marine science education. Maybe someday one of these kids will do something extremely important that will save our oceans and planet, mused Dick. I want them to have the opportunity. 29

People How do we begin to thank you, our community, for the time, talent and skills you share? Trustees, staff, volunteers, members, benefactors, corporate sponsors and partners together you give life to this precious commitment to protect our oceans, and help us nurture stewardship and wonder for our ocean planet worldwide. We could never achieve our mission without your support, and we are grateful for your generosity and enthusiasm. On behalf of the entire Sea Research Foundation team, thank you. Dr. Stephen M. Coan President & CEO Susette Tibus: The fine art of generous leadership Susette Tibus, Sea Research Foundation trustee since 2008 and co-chair of our annual Ocean Commotion gala, has several secrets for success. She sends hundreds of thank you notes because appreciation should never be taken for granted. She takes a genuine interest in people and she insists, Do what you do best. Susette does her best in spades. Born in Mystic, Conn., she is co-owner and president of Simply Majestic jewelers, chairwoman of the Stonington Police Commission, and board member or chair for many local area philanthropic efforts. Her energy, goodwill and organizational skills move mountains. What s more, Susette lights up a room. She walks in and all of a sudden everyone in the room is laughing. It s a tremendous quality. So when Susette makes a commitment or a suggestion, folks trust her and know she s behind it 100 percent. Just like at Sea Research, where she says, Find out what your passion is because we have it for you. Whether it s education, research, our stranding program there s something for everyone at Sea Research Foundation. Just find it! And give to it, care about it, contribute to it. 30

Chairman s Letter I ve been engaged with Sea Research Foundation for more than 15 years. The reason I ve stayed engaged and am more passionate now than ever is not just because of Sea Research s ability to make a difference, but the scope and magnitude of that difference. This is a major aquarium coupled with a worldwide exploration center of international acclaim. It s a research institution that contributes to conservation and research efforts on a global basis, whether in South Africa or the North Slope of Alaska. It s a place where young people can come not only to be entertained, but to be intrigued and get that spark of interest in exploring the world around them from a scientific perspective. Sea Research builds on the incredible exploration potential of Bob Ballard and our scientific research to create an institution that reaches not only young children through its Sea School program, but also through The JASON Project, which reaches some 2 million children annually. Over the last decade we have made dramatic progress in building Sea Research s leadership. We ve reduced our debt load and now we re building toward the future. This is about creating new exhibitry and enhancing Mystic Aquarium s year-round appeal. It s about bringing in new capabilities, such as JASON, to add to our national perspective, prospect and vision. We intend to use our exploration research, scientific research and worldwide learning expertise to shape this into an institution which is not only a great place to visit, but also a contributor to conservation efforts on a worldwide basis and a key part of the answer to how we re going to energize young people s enthusiasm for scientific education worldwide. The young people of today are going to be the stewards of our ocean planet and it s critical that they learn about those values including the exciting geological discoveries you can make under the sea, the marine mammals that are endangered but need to be preserved, and the unique species that exist under our ocean surface and gain respect for the world we live in at a time when our populations will continue to grow and the pressure on natural resources will continue to increase. It is essential that we not only understand these things, but learn to love and appreciate them. George Milne Chairman of the Board Sea Research Foundation 31
