3 NATIONAL र ष ट Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has approved implementation of Strategic Partnership guidelines. It is considered as major step towards boosting private sector participation in domestic defence manufacturing. The policy had come into effect in May 2017 but progress was delayed due to lack of specific guidelines.

4 STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP GUIDELINES SP model aims to revitalise defence industrial ecosystem and progressively build indigenous capabilities in private sector to design, develop and manufacture complex weapon system for future needs of armed forces. It lay emphasis on incentivisation of transfer of niche technology and higher indigenous content. The SP model has four segments submarines, single engine fighter aircraft, helicopters and armoured carriers/main battle tanks which will be specifically opened up for the private sector.

5 STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP GUIDELINES Under this model, one Indian private company will be selected in each segment which will tie-up with shortlisted global equipment manufacturers to manufacture platforms in India through technology transfer under Make in India. All procurements under the SP model would be executed by specially constituted Empowered Project Committees to provide focussed attention and ensure timely execution.

7 NATIONAL र ष ट Actress Kangana Ranaut and Chhattisgarh CM Raman Singh launched a smartphone distribution scheme called 'Mobile Tihar' under Sanchar Kranti Yojna. The scheme includes distribution of smartphones to 45 lakh women and 5 lakh children, and setting up of 556 new mobile towers. The Chhattisgarh government is working towards improving network connectivity and empowering youth with smartphones.

10 INTERNATIONAL अ तरर ष ट The United States has eased export controls for high-technology product sales to India by elevating its status to a Strategic Trade Authorisation-1 (STA-1) country. The information was shared by US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross. With the move, the United States has granted India the same access as NATO allies, Australia, Japan and South Korea.

11 ABOUT STA-1 The STA-1 list currently comprises 36 countries in total. India is the only South Asian country to feature on the list. Other Asian countries designated as STA-1 include Japan and South Korea.

13 INTERNATIONAL अ तरर ष ट European Union countries decided to move the headquarters of the bloc's anti-piracy Atalanta patrols from London to the Spanish port of Rota on March 29 next year, when Britain exits the EU. An EU statement said that the member countries also agreed to transfer the London-based Maritime Security Centre Horn of Africa, which informs shipping about piracy threats off Somalia, to the French port of Brest. The security centre will remain under the Atalanta command.

16 BUSINESS व य प India's richest person Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) beat Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) to become the most valued company in India. RIL's market capitalisation during the day was Rs7.44 trillion as compared to TCS' Rs7.39 trillion. RIL had recently reported its highest ever quarterly net profit of Rs9,459 crore, for the April-June quarter.

19 APPOINTMENT नय क तय The Hong kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) announced the appointment of Surendra Rosha as Chief Executive Officer for HSBC India, subject to regulatory approvals. Rosha succeeded Jayant Rikhye. Rosha, who is currently HSBC s Head of Financial Institutions Group (FIG) for Asia-Pacific, has 27 years of experience in the financial services sector. He began his career in financial services when he joined HSBC s India operations in 1991.

22 APPOINTMENT नय क तय Paytm Payments Bank CEO Renu Satti has resigned from the role and will now head Paytm's new retail initiative. Paytm will look for a replacement for Satti, who had taken over the CEO role last year. In the past, Satti has built businesses ground up that include market place, movie ticketing and most recently Paytm Payments Bank.

26 AWARDS प रस क Former West Bengal governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi has been selected for this year's Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavana Award for his outstanding contribution towards the promotion of communal harmony, peace and goodwill. The award will be presented to Gandhi at a special ceremony on August 20 at Jawahar Bhawan. The award, which carries a citation and cash amount of Rs 10 lakh, is given on the occasion of the birthday of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. It was instituted to commemorate the lasting contribution made by him to promote peace, communal harmony and fight against violence.

36 MISCELLANEOUS अन सम च र American and Spanish Scientists have discovered a new shape called 'scutoid' while studying nature s way of moulding tissue to form the skin, cavity linings and the building blocks of organs. The shape has five sides on one end and six on the other and a triangular surface on one of its longer edges. Scientists have referred to it as a twisted prism kind of shape that allows the tissue to mould around organs. Epithelial tissue, one of the four kinds of tissue that forms the human body, is composed of epithelial cells packed together in a particular formation that has been given a nifty name: scutoid.

38 OBITUARIES श ज ल Acclaimed Bengali writer Ramapada Chowdhury, whose story 'Abhimanyu' was made into a Hindi movie 'Ek doctor ki maut', passed away. Chowdhury was 95. He was conferred the Sahitya Academy award for 'Bari badle jay' in He was also the recipient of Rabindra Puraskar, Ananda Puraskar and Rabindranath Tagore Memorial International Prize. His last book, 'Harano Khata' was published in 2015.
