Photo: Diana Meso Library receives ICRC book donation The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Nairobi Regional Delegation on Friday, November 25 donated more than 100 copies of Geneva Conventions and Additional Protocols to the University Library and Information Center. The book donation was organized through Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Dr. Simeon Sungi, and received by Chief Librarian Ms. Damiana Kiilu. USIU-Africa s partnership with ICRC is almost a decade old with the university spanning various ICRC initiatives including the annual National ICRC International Humanitarian Law (IHL) competition. The donated IHL publications are expected to enable students of International Humanitarian Law and International Law gain a deeper understanding of international legal issues and statutes dealing with human rights. 2 UNITED STATES INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY-AFRICA NEWSLETTER 2-8 DECEMBER 2016 Neighborhood association holds annual charity breakfast Group Photo: The annual Kasarani Neighborhood Association (KNA) Charity Breakfast was hosted by Safari Park Hotel on Friday November 18, and attended by representatives of six of its members, as well as current beneficiaries of the Association s Securing Potential and Naturing Talent (SPANT) Scholarship program. Kasarani Neighborhood Association raised total KES 412,050 during its fourth Annual Breakfast Fundraiser at Safari Park Hotel on Friday, November 18, to support and expand the SPANT (Securing Potential and Naturing Talent) Scholarship program. The scholarship program has received more than KES 2 million raised through the Association s annual charity breakfast and membership fees since the program began in The Vice Chancellor Prof. Paul Zeleza and the Safari Park Hotel General Manager Mr. Japhleth Kimathi both made remarks commending the association on its scholarship program, and urging it to look beyond its membership in raising further SPANT program support. Former District Education Officer Ms. Roselyne Litaba in her keynote address acknowledged the immense support provided by the Association, pointing at the improved but still dire situation of pupils in public primary schools within Kasarani sub-county. Aside from USIU-Africa, the Kasarani Neighborhood Association currently has seven other members namely; Safari Park Hotel, Thika Road Baptist Church and School, Kenya Institute of Special Education, Mountain View School, Ruaraka Academy, St. Joseph of Arimathea and Pan African Christian University. 10,000 Women hosts continuing education workshop on talent management The Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women program held a continuing education workshop on Friday, November 18, for sixteen of its alumni, to address business challenges in recruiting, hiring, training and motivating employees. Sessions were led by Dr. Teresia Linge, Associate Professor of Management and Director of Business Administration/International Business Administration Programs, Chandaria School of Business, and covered: Resourcing and retaining talent in business organizations, Talent Development, Performance Management Processes in Business Organizations, and Rewarding and Motivating Talent. The workshop was very well received by the program alumni. One participant, Susan Mutuku, reported that she is determined to implement the new knowledge she has gained in the workshop, starting with a Christmas party for her employees. The Goldman Sachs 10,000 Women initiative was launched in 2008 as an effort to foster economic growth by providing women entrepreneurs around the world with business education and access to capital. To date, the initiative has reached over 10,000 women from across 56 countries through a network of 100 academic, nonprofit, and bank partners.

Photo: Diana Meso USIU-Africa hosted thirty five students of journalism and cross-cultural studies, from NLA University in Norway on Tuesday and Wednesday November for an exchange program visit. The group accompanied by two faculty members toured the campus meeting students, faculty and staff and also sat in on three lectures by our faculty; Mr. Moses Onyango (Lecturer of International Relations, and Director of the Institute of Public Policy and International Affairs) spoke on The complexity of multiculturalism and violent extremism in the global age, Dr Josephine Arasa (Associate Professor of Psychology) spoke on Sexual Liberation: Cross-cultural perspectives and lessons learned while Ms. Robi Koki (Lecturer of Journalism) discoursed on Reversed Cultural Imperialism. USIU-Africa s long and fruitful relationship with NLA University in Norway was initiated by retired legendary Journalism lecturer Mr. Joe Kadhi, and has enabled students from NLA Burgen and Kristian campuses exchange annual visits with USIU-Africa counterparts. Graduate students participate in X-Culture global business competition 29 graduate students from the Chandaria School of Business were presented with a certificate of completion on Wednesday November 30, in recognition of their contribution as part of a Global Virtual Team for the X-Culture Global Collaboration Course. The students, who are members of the IBA6020 (Transnational Strategic Management) class taught by Assistant Professor of Strategic Management Dr. Juliana Namada, joined over 4,000 students from 110 universities, in the global completion, spending two months receiving theoretical training and practical experience. Every semester, thousands of students and professionals from over 40 countries take part in the X-Culture competition, where for several months, they compete and collaborate on business projects presented by X-Culture corporate partners, thereby learning the challenges and best practices of international business consulting.
4 Seasoned development expert Mr. Richard Mugo speaks to the BUS 6035 (Leadership and Ethics) class taught by Assistant Professor of Leadership Dr. Jeremiah Ole Koshal. Mr. Mugo dwelt on his wide experiences working for national and global organizations in various economic sectors. He explained how his audience could navigate ethical challenges and emerge as corporate leaders driven by a strong vision and ethical values. Mr David Gachoki speaks to the BUS 6120 (Strategic Response to Turbulent Environments) class taught by Assistant Professor in Strategic Management Dr. Joyce Ndegwa, on Friday, November 25 in the Science Center. 5 New divisions created, others merged in new organizational structure Following the implementation of the USIU-Africa Job Evaluation, Organizational and Salary Review, the university has a new organizational structure. The former Institutional Planning and Advancement division will now be known as University Advancement, while the former Student Affairs division merges with Academic Affairs to be Academic & Student Affairs division. Legal Services, Office of the Vice Chancellor and Administration are now divisions, joining ICT and Finance to complete the tally of seven divisions in the new organizational structure. Departments of Security Services, Health Services, Human Resources and Operations have found a new home in the Administration division, while University Advancement has an additional department - Partnership and External Linkages.
