PAGE 4 The Azoan JULY 2010 From the desk of the editor... When I first got the call to be AZOAN editor, I felt many emotions: excitement for the challenge, proud that Brian appointed me, fear of letting the fraternity and myself down, and loads of anxiety. I have recently found myself to be feeling all of these and more. I found myself harassing fraters to produce reports covering the activities of the past year and myself stuck with writer s block. How do I put how I feel about this wonderful fraternity, my second family, on paper? I ve been writing this report for about a year. Inspiration rarely hit, but when it did, my iphone was ready. When I was in my first year at Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, I wanted the college experience that my friends back home had. Alpha Zeta Omega blew the competition away. The girls in the Tau Chapter shared a bond that I could see, and to this day, can t explain with words. I take pleasure in noting that many memorable events in my life had me surrounded by my Tau girls and AZO family. Even though I am alumni now, AZO remains a significant part of my life. Twelve years is a short time compared to other fraters in this fraternity, however, I plan to continue making new memories and welcoming new fraters for many years to come. Interchapter visits were too few when I was an undergrad and it impresses me that the current undergrads are willing to travel and participate in other chapter s activities. These bonds are formed and solidified over time as I have observed from my first convention in Las Vegas, Nevada in 1999 to the most recent in Naples, Florida I learn by example and many fraters inspire me to participate rather than be present. Manny Fiel and Jeff Levy were two such fraters that are no longer with us and will be greatly missed. Over the past 90 years, our fraternity has grown and flourished. From the Founding Fathers until now, AZO has changed with the times and continues to evolve. Supreme Directorum Brian Pinto s inaugural speech in July planned for some changes that are already set in motion: a new website, increased interchapter communication and finding lost alumni. I m happy to be part of Brian s vision and AZO s thriving future. I have a list of people to thank: Supreme Directorum Brian Pinto for this appointment; Don Reisfeld, our publisher for making my vision a reality; Lou Flacks for his direction; Bruce Strell for knowing all the answers; Mike Seidenman for catering to my wishes to see his exceptional photos; our proof-readers, Jeanne-Marie Holly and Lois Seidenman. A big thank you to Diane Medeiros for stepping in when I had to temporarily step out. I also need to thank my husband and son, Steven and Aedan, for their unending patience. I m sorry I cannot make it to Puerto Rico for this convention. Please know that my heart is with you. I look forward to the many conventions that I will attend in the future and the new memories I will make with all of my fraters. Peace, Friendship and Brotherly Love, Daniella Davis 2010 AZOAN Editor Brian Pinto, Diane Medeiros and Daniella Davis, 2007 Orlando Regional Convention. 8 PAGE 8 The Azoan JULY 2010 When I accepted the office of Directorum last July in Philadelphia, I thought that I had an idea of what was in store for me. However, now more than 10 months have passed, I find that the work required to maintain this fraternity s day to day happenings is quite a bit more than I could have ever expected. The positive side to this is that I had an excellent slate of officers and appointees to help handle the hefty agenda I had proposed at last summer s National Convention. So the question begs, Where do we stand now? My goals for the year were optimistic, but I feel we definitely made headway on laying a solid foundation for the initiatives I outlined last summer, first off, electronic communications and the website. Since January, our newly revamped site at or are live. We are constantly upgrading and adding new features to the site and welcome any feedback, positive or negative, that anyone may have. Communication between Supreme and its members has been consistent and fluid with several directorum s updates, charity and convention updates, among other things. A second major goal of mine involved retention and reaching out to lost fraters. Although our efforts were delayed due to the large scope of this project, we have started to see some returns on this work. Over 700 letters went out to fraters that have not heard from AZO in several years. Our outreach through social networking sites like Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter have allowed us to reach out to more people at little or no cost to the Fraternity. These efforts have allowed us to begin to focus on mentorship. As I write this, we are compiling databases to allow our undergraduates to locate networking and possible employment opportunities within the fraternity. Along with an update to the Constitution I hope to have completed by the convention in Puerto Rico, I feel that most of my goals have been accomplished. I hope that the future leadership continues to improve upon these goals and bring in new ideas to better AZO. Like almost every other year, our focus continues to be in the development of our undergraduate chapters and its members. Before I go any further, I would like to acknowledge the work of our legal advisor, Joy Pollock. She has been instrumental in continuing to pursue our Supreme Directorum Report efforts to help secure funds for the AZO Endowment Fund which one day will be able to provide substantial scholarship assistance to our undergraduates. As for our undergraduate chapters, they continue to thrive scholastically and professionally. We are considering new opportunities and have contacts at Northeast Ohio University College of Pharmacy in Ohio, Touro in New York, Jefferson University in Philadelphia, and now the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan. Although our undergraduates represent our future, our alumni chapters still represent who we are today. The value of the alumni of this fraternity to the undergraduates and to the fraternity itself is immeasurable. Their continued attendance at conventions has been great and each of our alumni chapters continues to be active at a local level. I would like to thank those chapters that have extended invites to myself and Leann to come and visit their cities, taken the time to show us around and thrown in some surprises as well. Thank you to Epsilon, New York Alumni, Philadelphia Alumni, Nu, Tau, Milwaukee Alumni and Eta Chapters for your hospitality and support. As we finish this fraternal year I would like to thank the chapters for their individual contributions to this years National Charity, the Lustgarten Foundation. I would like to thank the fraters for their contributions towards our annual Supreme fundraiser and to those who helped secure ads and make this AZOAN another success. Just a few final notes: First, a huge thanks to all of my board members and appointees, your hard work and effort has been invaluable to me. To my wife and fellow frater, Leann Clymer, for her constant encouragement and support. Congratulations go out to Frater Steve Brooks, P.S.D. on his selection as our Meritorius Award Winner and to Sharon Chan, our Supreme Undergraduate Award Winner. Both honors are well deserved. I would be remiss if I did not mention the passing of several leaders of this great organization. The passing of Fraters Manny Fiel. P.S.D., Dr. Jeff Levy and Auxiliary P.N.P. Annette Weinstein are a sad moment in a year where we strived to create much progress. May the lessons we learned from them guide us and future leaders of AZO in the virtues of Peace, Friendship, and Brotherly Love. Thank you once again for allowing me to serve in this capacity and I look forward to seeing most of you in Puerto Rico this July. Fraternally, Brian Pinto Supreme Directorum

JULY 2010 The Azoan PAGE 9 Supreme National Fund Raising Project The Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer This year I directed the Supreme Charity to be the Lustgarten Foundation. Partly due to the fact that I have seen some family and friends succumb to this rapid and devastating illness and more so because I was inspired by the strength showed by one of our own fraters to not only beat it the first time but to stretch out several years in what originally was given only a few months. Unfortunately Frater Jeff Levy succumbed to this illness this past December but that cannot dim our pursuit of a cure. The Lustgarten Foundation has long been a pioneer in pancreatic cancer research. They are increasing funding and support of research into the biological mechanisms and clinical strategies related to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of pancreatic cancer, facilitating and enhancing the dialogue among members of the medical and scientific communities about basic and clinical research efforts that relate to pancreatic cancer. They are advocating an increase in the annual budget of the National Cancer Institute with emphasis on research related to pancreatic cancer and heightening the public s awareness of pancreatic cancer diagnosis, treatment, and prevention and providing informational support for pancreatic cancer patients, their families, and friends. Most of our chapters made individual contributions to the Lustgarten Foundation by helping raise money through local events, some of the highlights include: The Epsilon Chapter hosted an alumni/undergraduate poker tournament where half of the buy-ins were donated to the charity, the Tau Chapter dedicated their annual Chili Cook-off to the Lustgarten Foundation. This is the event where faculty, staff and administrators from the school compete to have bragging rights on the best home made chili voted on by other members of the college. The Sigma Chapter donated a portion of the funds from school fund raisers they held throughout the year to Lustgarten. I thank all the chapters for their support and urge you all to keep the memory of Jeff alive and remember that we must all do our part as healthcare professionals to aid in the support of a cure. Fraternally, Brian Pinto Supreme Directorum Tau fund raising for the Lustgarten Foundation was a chili cook-off!

PAGE 10 The Azoan July 2010 National Auxiliary President Report As I pondered about AZO and its affect on my life, thoughts of a kaleidoscope came to mind; a kaleidoscope filled with colors - both soft and vibrant. The similarities between the kaleidoscope and my life are apparent. There are many different colors in my life, family, friends, work, and hobbies. AZO adds another color to my kaleidoscope. An even more beautiful image appears as the effect the Auxiliary has had on my life comes into focus. I came into this organization as a shy young girl, just out of nursing school. I attended NY Alumni meetings with Steve before working the night shift. I think of these early times and my kaleidoscope seems rosy. As each year passed, AZO continued to play an integral role in my life. Growing friendships with our NY Alumni family, AZO weekend getaways and monthly meetings all dominated my social calendar. When the National Convention was to be held locally, Aaron Masia insisted that Steve and I attend. I would never have guessed that meeting Lou and Gloria Flacks at this convention would lead to over 10 years of amazing AZO memories. With their nudging, Steve and I became involved at the National level and have shared many golden moments with everyone. I have grown to know and love many Auxiliary and Fraternity members just by meeting them a few times a year. Through the Auxiliary, I have encountered people that encourage and believe in me. Memories of many, and some forever in my heart, add the most vibrant of colors and brightness to my special kaleidoscope. It has been an honor to represent the Auxiliary this year as National President again. I cherish the memory of meeting the great presidents of the Auxiliary who came before me: Rose Hillman, Bertha Charkins, Reva Goldfedder, Mintsy Agin, Fran Breslow, Gert Wasserman, Karyl Keisman and Annette Weinstein. These women, and the memories I have of them, add their own vibrant colors to my kaleidoscope. My year passed by too quickly. I was happy to have seen so many Fraters and Auxiliary members in both Philadelphia and Naples. I thank Brian Pinto for a smooth-sailing year. To my fellow officers, kudos on a job well done, it was a pleasure working with each of you. I look forward with anticipation as I plan for the convention in Puerto Rico. I am thrilled that my husband will be receiving the Meritorious Award in such a sunny setting. The colors in my kaleidoscope continue to shift and change, always evolving, but always rich and special. How beautiful it is as I turn the handle, watching the colors mesh and transform because of each of you, those deep in my heart, and our beliefs in the values of Alpha Zeta Omega. Thank you for all the rainbows you add to my kaleidoscope. Fraternally, Agnes N. Brooks, P.N.P. 11 JULY 2010 The Azoan PAGE 11 Supreme Sub-Directorum Report First, I would like to thank the fraternity for electing me as Supreme Sub-Directorum. It has been quite a busy year for AZO. The creation of a new website, updating mailing lists and the pursuit of new chapters are just a few of the tasks that our Supreme officers have been hard at work on this year. As Chairman of the Awards Committee, it was my pleasure to inform Frater Steve Brooks in Naples, Florida that he would be receiving the Meritorious Award at the National Convention in Puerto Rico. Congratulations Steve on receiving this prestigious honor! I look forward to convening with the committee once again to choose next year s Jay L. Pollock Supreme Undergraduate Award Recipient. I had the pleasure of visiting the Tau Chapter in February for the first time in nine years. Thank you for the hospitality! Although Mother Nature decided that I would not make it to Sigma s Bowl-a-thon this year by producing a massive snowstorm that grounded air travel for a couple of days, Sigma enjoyed another successful signature event. I will surely make it next year! This year I have assisted Frater Brian Pinto in relaying information to our chapters and gave feedback on details of the new website amongst other tasks. I have also looked into the possibility of establishing a new chapter at the School of Pharmacy at the University of Puerto Rico. Along with establishing a new chapter in Puerto Rico, Frater Lou Flacks, P.S.D. and I are working on establishing a professional relationship with the Colegio de Farmaceuticos (Puerto Rico s National Pharmacist Association) to provide continuing education seminars which could produce revenue for the fraternity. These projects are in the works and I will provide follow-up reports in the near future. With the costs of our conventions and operating expenses increasing, and a downward economy, Supreme requested the help of all its members through the selling of Azoan ads and raffle tickets. I have joined the efforts of Fraters Flacks and Pinto in selling ads for this year and I would like to thank the fraters who assisted us in acquiring additional ads for this issue. The financial state of the fraternity is an issue that needs immediate attention and it will be addressed this upcoming year. I truly believe that if everyone works together, we can think of new ideas to generate revenue for the fraternity in order to become more financially viable. In conclusion, it has been my pleasure serving as Supreme Sub-Directorum this year! I look forward to working with all of you next year in continued service to our great fraternity! Nos vemos en Puerto Rico! Fraternally, Lenny Salsa Ortega Supreme Sub-Directorum Supreme Excheque Report I can t believe that the year is coming to an end. As Supreme Excheque, I have been exposed to the inner circle of Alpha Zeta Omega Pharmaceutical Fraternity on a national level. It was an eye-opener. As the old phrase goes the buck stops here it did not at all. As fast as the monies were coming in; I was writing checks out to pay for staples; travel; supplies; convention bills; food; local chapter contribution reimbursements; and the list goes on and on. The door to the Office of Supreme Excheque was never closed. In fact, the door was opened 24/7. And you know what, I actually loved the work. I saw Alpha Zeta Omega with a new pair of eyes. I saw Alpha Zeta Omega in a different light. That light was often times, an unusual stream of indistinguishable aura beaming randomly until I was able to comprehend the task at hand and the light became a radiant rainbow of colors. This is a learning process for me and I am glad I had the opportunity to be Supreme Excheque. I would like to take this moment and to thank our Supreme Directorum, Frater Brian Pinto, for his input throughout this year and guiding me in my position as Supreme Excheque. I would also like to thank the other Supreme Officers, Sub- Directorum Leonardo Ortega, and Supreme Signare Stephen Imperato, for their assiduous contribution to keep me reasonably sane for the most part. Their interminable assistance was a true testament of what brotherly love is. I thank all the Supreme Officers for a job well done. I now put it out to all of the young Fraters; now is the time to seize the moment and to accept a position on the Board. If you want to see change, make it happen. If you want to see movement forward, make it happen. If you believe you can do it, make it happen. Take a position with Supreme and you will not regret it. I am glad I did. I feel young again! PF&BL, John W. Chin Supreme Excheque Supreme Bellarum Report I was honored to be elected as Supreme Bellarum this past year to serve the fraternity that I cherish. As Supreme Bellarum, I was fortunate to join Supreme Directorum Brian Pinto on a visit to the Nu Chapter in Connecticut and Tau Chapter in Boston. After the Naples convention in January, I replaced the luggage carrying the fraternity s robes and ritual material and organized the material in it. I hope many fraters will join us in Puerto Rico this coming July, where we will, no doubt, have another wonderful convention. Fraternally yours, Diane Medeiros Supreme Bellarum

PAGE 12 The Azoan July 2010 Supreme Signare Report The close of this fraternal year ends my two year term as Supreme Signare. I would like to thank the fraternity for giving me the opportunity to serve as a supreme officer again. This year has been marked by incredible activity amongst our undergraduate chapters. I am delighted to report more chapters than ever in recent history have fulfilled the requirements of the Directorum s Cup. One of the main projects of my office was the creation of a master membership database. I am pleased to announce this was compiled and with the aid of Directorum Pinto and the individual chapters we are making great strides to have an updated roster. I have assisted in the continued development of the new AZO.org website which is up and running but has more improvements to be made. I have received minutes and communications from Epsilon, Kappa, New York Alumni, Nu, Sigma, Psi, and Tau chapters and would like to thank their officers for the timely reporting. We continue to expand and welcomed 97 new fraters during the fraternal year. It truly has been a pleasure serving as Signare for the past two years. I would like to thank Directorum Pinto for his excellent leadership as well as the rest of the Supreme board on another fantastic year. Congratulations to Frater Brooks on receiving the Meritorious Award. I look forward to seeing everyone in beautiful Puerto Rico in July! Fraternally submitted, Stephen Imperato Supreme Signare Associate Signare Report The main obligation of the Supreme Associate Signare is to serve as the editor and publisher of The AZO Apothecary newsletter. For me, it has been a challenging and a gratifying experience. I have been associated with print journalism in some direct or tangential mode for four decades. Writing about fraters, pharmacy and fraternalism is what I prefer to do most and the rewards are copious. Henry Ward Beecher ( ) wrote, There never was a person who did anything worth doing that did not receive more than he gave. How true that has been for me, serving as a Supreme officer this past year. I have received excellent advice from the previous editor, Frater John Chin, and I have received immense satisfaction from the distribution of those several newsletters among AZO fraters. I am truly grateful for the opportunity I have been provided. Fraternally, Mel Lessing Supreme Associate Signare Supreme Undergraduate Report My year as the undergrad rep has come to an end too soon. In a year that had a lot of adversity and change within the undergrad chapters of the fraternity, I think we should take solace in the fact that the relationship between the chapters is strong and healthy. I wish there was more time to visit the undergrad chapters but communication through helps us keep in touch. Convention was a big success for the undergrads, as per the trend of increasing undergrad representation at winter convention. We hope to see more undergraduate representation. Conventions are great opportunities for us to reconnect with each other since it is difficult to visit during the school year. There was plenty of travel between the chapters. A snow storm did not stop Epsilon and Nu from driving to Bowl-A-Thon and Tau was able to attend Rutgersfest. As I am ending my office, I cannot help think about the past year and how rewarding it was to have brought the chapters closer together. It was an honor to help the fraternity and I wish the next Undergrad Rep lots of luck in the future. Peace, Friendship, and Brotherly Love, Vishal Amin Supreme Undergraduate Representative Associate Undergraduate Report Thanks to Pinto and the supreme officers for making this an outstanding fraternal year! I would like to thank the undergrads for their hard work. The relationships between the undergraduate chapters grew immensely since last July. Conventions twice a year are just not enough for us; at least once a month one undergrad chapter was visiting another. Due to the undergrad council Vishal created this year, ideas for fundraising, philanthropy and professional events are being shared, which is making each chapter stronger. It has been a great year for the undergrads. I was excited to visit New Jersey in November for the end of Epsilon s pledging. It is rare to be a part of another chapter s pledging for more than a phone interview. I took advantage of this opportunity to get ideas for the future. Epsilon and Nu braved the snowy, slushy, slippery roads to come to Toledo for Bowl-a-thon in February. Even though the weather gave us a few problems, we had a successful weekend and were grateful to those who made the trip. Plans are in the works for a Cedar Point trip possibly in August, details to follow. Hope to see you on the sunny beaches of Puerto Rico in July! PF&BL, Megan Burns Supreme Associate Undergraduate Representative

JULY 2010 The Azoan PAGE 13 Mentor Committee Report I d like to take a second to thank Brian Pinto for appointing me to be the Mentorship Director for the fraternal year. Although work on the mentorship program got off to a slow start through most of the year due to the need to wait for critical updates to AZO Direct and the website, the spring has brought a renewed focus on developing the mentorship database. Currently, the mentor count stands at 17 and includes a wide variety of pharmacy settings including retail, health system, industry, academia, and state and federal departments/organizations. While this represents a healthy start to the program, there is a significant need for a greater number of mentor volunteers covering a wider variety of pharmaceutical fields along with some non-pharmaceutical related fields. Also, a push is being made to expand the mentorship program to cover a variety of experiences in fraternal life. So, whether you have experience as a bellarum within your local chapter or have served as Supreme Directorum, I encourage you to volunteer and share these experiences with other fraters through the mentorship program. To help connect fraters and build the mentorship database, social networking websites such as Linkedin and Facebook will be utilized. If you are signed up on either of these sites, please search for and join the AZO groups. Updates on the mentorship program will be posted on both sites in the future. With fraters in every niche of the pharmaceutical field, the fraternity has a wide variety of experiences and knowledge to share. Tapping into this resource through a mentorship relationship will help develop better pharmacists and fraters. Thus, a successful mentorship program can help to strengthen the fraternity and achieve the mission of the fraternity as stated in the AZO creed. Whether you would like to volunteer as a mentor or are simply looking for one, please feel free to contact me at cjgabel@gmail.com. PF&BL, Chris Gabel Mentorship Chairman Supreme Legal Advisor Report The office of Legal Advisor has been quiet this past year. That is a good sign since it means that there have been no legal issues that concern the Fraternity at this time. I thank Brian Pinto for his appointment and would like to commend the Board for a job well done. Fraternally yours, Joy Pollock, Esq., P.N.P. Legal Advisor Supreme Deputy Report It has been my pleasure to serve Brian and the Fraternity as Supreme Deputy. This is the first time I have held this office. I know I have more to learn with respect to the office. I have been amazed at the energy and attention that Brian has put forth this year. He has truly done much to complete important fraternity operational projects like the website redesign. However, he has done much more with the Fraternity bonds. The Fraternity is made up of individuals with a common interest: pharmacy. The founding fathers were able to tap into the common interests of pharmacy students and build AZO. Today, those interests within pharmacy have a broader scope than ever before. Brian has built on the foundation of the founding fathers and has revitalized the interest in Supreme among the fraters who are less advanced chronologically. It has been suggested as the fraternity matures and advances to its 100th birthday we must adhere to the rituals and activities of the past. Futhermore, it is the responsibility of the fraternity to recognize the changes that have occurred and to move forward while continuing to honor the tenets of the past. This does not mean to continue to blindly do everything as we ve done in the past, but rather bring the fraternal truths into today s activities. Changing leadership means to incorporate the current needs with the propriety of the past. I look forward to future activity of the chapters and supreme. Fraternally submitted, Vince Paul, P.S.D. Supreme Deputy Electronic Communications Report Just a few things about the website! First and foremost I want to pay my dues and thank frater Mort Smith, P.S.D. for all he has done with the website. It truly was a blessing to have a base from which I could build upon and Mort did an amazing job. Hopefully everyone has been able to access everything that has been posted easily. There is still a learning curve in terms of making sure I can make the site interactive. Since my iteration of the website is still new, I appreciate everyone s patience with me as I try to ensure the quality and quantity of materials I post are up to date and given to you in a timely fashion. I welcome all and any opinions, critiques, suggestions, and thoughts; anything that would make the website better and easier to use. I want to personally thank Sigma (my guinea pigs) with their items on the website before it went live. Once again, thank you for your patience. PFBL, Tan Carlin Webmaster Visit:

PAGE 14 The Azoan July 2010 Supreme Historian Report Thank you to Supreme Directorum Pinto for the honor of the appointment to the position of Supreme Historian. I hope to have a visual synopsis of the fraternal year prepared by the Summer Convention in Puerto Rico. Fraternally submitted, John Anciano, P.S.D. Supreme Historian Director of Continuing Education In the past fraternal year, I continued the CE lunch seminars at national conventions. During the summer convention in Philadelphia, we discussed hypothyroidism, outlining the signs, symptoms, prognosis, management, and outcomes. At the winter convention in Florida, we compared the old, new, and future anti-platelets in both efficacy and safety and I think we saw that the future is promising. The professional committee looks forward to continue to provide educational and entertaining seminars in the future as well as expanding the platform to include professional networking services within AZO. More details to come Fraternally, Mehul Patel, PharmD. Director of Continuing Education Director of Fraternal Affairs It is the duty of the Director of Fraternal Affairs to act as a source of fraternal tradition, knowledge, and protocol. 15 JULY 2010 The Azoan PAGE 15 Supreme Chaplain and Good & Welfare Reports It has been my pleasure to serve in this capacity for the Fraternal Year. Throughout the year I have sent birthday greetings to Past Supreme Directorums; upcoming birthday announcements in the AZO Apothecary; get well wishes to Fraters and family members; condolences to family members of recently deceased Fraters; and names of recently deceased Fraters for inclusion in the Memorial Book. The Silent Mortars are included in the 2010 AZOAN. It will be my honor to lead the memorial service at the 90th Annual National Convention in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. I have enjoyed serving the Fraternity in this capacity. I would like to thank Supreme Directorum Brian Pinto for selecting me to serve the Fraternity in this capacity. It has truly been an honor to serve the members of the Fraternity as its Supreme Chaplain and Good and Welfare Chairperson. Fraternally, Paul R. Holly, P.S.D. Supreme Chaplain and Good and Welfare AZO Direct Report The AZO Direct office has been active this year, with the addition of the new AZO website as a tool for members to continue to connect to AZO. Over 25 active AZO Direct members have joined, with more coming in every day. Over the years, there have been many suggestions to help increase membership in AZO Direct, and this year we have started to implement these ideas. Blast s have been sent, along with traditional mailings. The new updated AZO website allows for an easier link to the Fraternity and easy, convenient payment of dues. It is truly speaks volumes about how we stay together as a Fraternity, when you see AZO Direct members continue to maintain their affiliation with the organization when no local chapter exists for these brothers. It has been my pleasure and honor to serve as the AZO Direct chairperson for this fraternal year, and thank Frater Supreme Directorum Brian Pinto for appointing me to this position. There is much more work to be done as we move forward with Fraters graduating without mixed or alumni chapters. However in this new era of s, electronic payments, and our friendly easy to use AZO website, we have the ability to continue to maintain our ties to each other and to the Fraternity as a whole. Fraternally submitted, Omer Munir AZO Direct Chairman Directors of Development My thanks to Supreme Directorum Pinto for the appointment and confidence he has in me. It has been my pleasure to serve in this administration. One thing that we all need to concentrate on now, and in the future, is COMMUNICATION. We have a great web site, newsletters and The Azoan. But, to grow, we need a steady stream of COMMUNICATION in BOTH directions, from Supreme to our chapters and fraters AND from our chapters and fraters to Supreme. What good are the web site, Apothecary, and The Azoan without good input and news from all of us? We also need to COMMUNICATE with existing and new Colleges of Pharmacy to encourage growth and expansion. This is the legacy that we must leave in order for AZO to move into the next 100 years. As expected, expansion and development of the fraternity have continued to be a slow process. The Supreme Chapter has remained in contact with Northeast Ohio University College of Pharmacy (NEOUCOP) in the hope that a new and sustainable chapter can be started there. While we hope to make gradual progress in our efforts at NEOUCOP, the Fraternity is also working to get the AZO name out to many other colleges and universities. At the time of this writing, myself, Co-Director of Development Mike Seidenman and Supreme Directorum Brian Pinto are drafting a letter to send to colleges of pharmacy detailing AZO as an organization. Through this endeavor, we hope to spur interest in AZO at various institutions that can hopefully foster the growth of new chapters. My belief is that the expansion of the Fraternity will continue to be a grinding and tedious process, but is an effort that must be undertaken to guarantee the survival of the Fraternity. It is imperative that the progress made this year is seamlessly transitioned and continued under the next administration. While it may sound clichéd, growth and expansion of the Fraternity is a marathon, not a sprint; and this must be the attitude taken by the Supreme Chapter. I would like to thank Supreme Directorum Brian Pinto for his service this year to the Fraternity and for appointing me to this position. It has once again been my pleasure to serve the fraternity on a national level. Fraternally, Mike Seidenman, P.S.D. Jared Stroud Director of Development Chairpersons

PAGE 18 The Azoan JULY 2010 Nu Chapter This fraternal year has been very successful for Nu Chapter. We started off the year with only seventeen fraters, but more than doubled our size with a pledge class of nineteen students this fall. Due to the size of our pledge class, much of our efforts in the fall semester were focused on pledging. In order to get to know these pledges, we hosted events such as brother dinners at Willington Pizza and Wood N Tap, our annual scavenger hunt, an iron chef competition, roller skating at Ron-A-Roll, and ice cream socials. All nineteen pledges were inducted on November 19th, and I am very happy to say that this pledge class has been a great addition to our chapter. They greatly contributed to our success over the past year, and we are happy to call them our brothers. This spring semester, we decided not to have pledging, so that we could build stronger relationships among the current brothers and focus more on community service and professional activities. However, we inducted one exchange student from the University of Singapore, after he completed the pledging process, since he was only at UConn for this spring. We started off the semester by joining forces with Phi Delta Chi to put on Rotations Night, where we brought back five P4 students to talk about their experiences on rotations. Later in February, we hosted a phenomenal speaker on stress management named Leo Lachut. Both events were very successful and helpful to all who attended. We held a Raffle for Haiti at the end of February, through which we raised over $300 for the Children of Promise International Orphanage in Leogane, Haiti. In March, many of us from Nu ran in the annual Pharmacy School Fun Run, with all of the proceeds going to the James Malaney Scholarship Fund, in memory of a P4 student who passed away from cancer this year. Many of us also participated in the Relay for Life walk at UConn this April, and our team raised over $1000 for the American Cancer Society. Throughout the semester, we have also been giving presentations at local senior centers on various topics such as Diabetes and Lipid Management and Questions for your Doctor or Pharmacist. All four of the presentations were very successful, and the seniors were very receptive and excited to ask us questions. Another huge endeavor of ours this year was to reconnect with some of our alumni. At the end of March, the Nu officers met up with three fraters from the Connecticut Alumni Chapter for lunch at Rein s Deli. We had a great time meeting these fraters and hearing about what AZO was like back in their day, and we look forward to some joint events in the future. We also held an AZO Alumni Luncheon this April at UConn to bring back some of our more recent alumni and the Connecticut Alumni Chapter. Although we didn t have a huge turnout this year, we still had fun meeting the alumni that attended, and we hope to bring back more alumni with future events. Going into this fraternal year, another one of our goals as a chapter was to get more involved nationally and with other chapters. For the first time in at least five years, we hosted ten students from Epsilon in October. We had a lot of fun meeting these fraters, and many of our brothers developed a newfound excitement for the future of our chapter, after seeing Epsilon s passion for AZO. Later that month, we also hosted Brian Pinto and Diane Medeiros, which was a great experience, as we gained lots of new ideas on how to improve our chapter. In January, four of us from Nu traveled to Naples, Florida for the National Convention, where we made great connections with Epsilon, Tau, Sigma, Psi, and many alumni. This spring, we visited Epsilon for one of their rush events, Sigma for Bowl-A-Thon, and Tau, first during their pledging and later for their school s Clam-B-Q. We are very excited about the connections we ve made with other chapters and National over the past year, and we look forward to more chapter visits and conventions in the future. Peace, Friendship, and Brotherly Love Katelyn Parsons Nu Chapter Directorum Milwaukee Alumni Milwaukee Alumni has been inactive this past fall and winter due to the fact that several of our seven members have been out of town for the winter season. With the return of these members, we will again schedule Sunday evening dinner and social meetings beginning in May. My wife Barbara and I are planning to attend the national convention in Puerto Rico in July. We are looking forward to seeing all AZO fraters at the convention. Fraternally, Melvin Altman Milwaukee Directorum and Excheque

JULY 2010 The Azoan PAGE 19 Tau Chapter With another year coming to an end, we would like to look back and highlight many of the wonderful events Tau chapter has participated in. This has definitely been a very eventful year as we were constantly involved in school activities, community service, fundraising, and social events. Some community service events we have been involved in were an Arthritis Walk. Members did a three mile walk starting at the Prudential Center and Boylston. It was a nice and sunny day perfect for the event. The walk helped raise money for the Arthritis Foundation. Over the summer we volunteered at the Old Time Baseball game. It was a really great day for baseball, and an exciting event. We had our annual Red Cross blood drive held at our school as well. All time slots were filled, and there were many successful donors. During the year Tau has put together many exciting events with the American Cancer Society s Astra Zeneca Hope Lodge. During the first semester of school we held a pumpkin painting event and second semester we had a baking night. We made cookies, brownies, cake, and muffins. All of the guests enjoyed it and we certainly have more events we plan on doing with the Hope Lodge in the future. We do put a lot of effort into community service, but we also like to just relax and hang out with each other as well. We feel this is important for keeping the bond we share so close. Throughout the year we have had many potluck dinners, some even themed. This gives us an opportunity to get away from the stresses from school, and just get away for a while. We started our second semester of school by attending the National Convention in Naples, Florida. We certainly had a wonderful time and we would like to thank Lou and Gloria again for putting together such an amazing event. We want to again recognize Tau s Supreme Undergraduate Award winner, Sharon Chan, for her outstanding accomplishment. After heading back to school we immediately started our pledging process. This year we are proud to say that we have welcomed eight new dedicated and hard-working girls into the Tau chapter. Though the road to induction may have been challenging this year, Tau is extremely proud of the new members and dedication they have put forth to this chapter. This has been a truly eventful year for the Tau chapter, but it is certainly not over. We are going to end the year with our annual Sister Dinner. This is an event we look forward to all year as we get dressed up and go out to eat. We welcome new members as we say goodbye to the graduates and announce the positions for next year. Overall the night puts forth a good end to the year, and shows the tight bond in which we all genuinely have with each other and AZO. Tau Pledge Class On the first day of pledging, we discovered that each and every one of us has a delightfully strong personality. At first, it seemed to only hold us back. We thought that we were just seven very different people who came from a wide variety of backgrounds. About a week or so into February, our pledge class realized something that would shape our bond into what it is today: none of us has a biological sister. Immediately, we realized a common thread that binds us together. Each of us wanted a trusted older figure to look up to and hopefully one day fill that role for future fraters. Finding that bond helped us to truly come together and reach other important benchmarks along the way. We learned how to communicate effectively even during moments of stress, manage time in various situations, and to use our own individual strengths to help each other succeed. Never have any of us found such a close relationship with anyone else like the one we have within each other. We are the Spring Pledge Class of Tau Chapter and we wouldn t have it any other way. Beth Adams Tau Chapter, AZO Editor Eta Chapter Alumni fraters visit the Eta Chapter table at the Philadelphia Convention. Eta is proud for the first time in many years, we initiated a new member this year. Dave Poppe, a Cincinnati pharmacist joined the fraternity and his wife Marilyn joined the auxiliary. At the same time, we are saddened by the loss of a long time member of our auxiliary, and Past National Auxiliary President, Annette Weinstein. We meet monthly, either as a chapter for dinner, or with our auxiliary for brunch. We hosted three large seminars during the year for the pharmacists in the Greater Cincinnati area (this is how we got to know Dave and Marilyn). This year we had an installation dinner for our members and auxiliary officers. Eta is still alive, well and serving the pharmacists in our area. PF&BL, Mike Seidenman, P.S.D. Eta Chapter Directorum Elect

PAGE 20 The Azoan JULY 2010 Philadelphia Alumni Epsilon Alumni Host Phaldelphia Alumni at the 2009 National Convention. The fraters and spouses of the Philadelphia Alumni enjoyed another social and educational year. Thanks to various fraters, the Alumni continue to hold three seminars a year which are successful and provide the necessary continuing education credits for members and non-members. Three wonderful dinner meetings were held. In October, we convened at the William Penn Inn. No, William Penn did not sleep or eat here, but he should have. The meal, the drinks, and the company were superb. The evening was arranged and hosted by the Goldmans. In February, we met at the Jarrettown Inn. Recent renovations to the place and to the food made this an excellent place for the Alumni and Auxiliary to meet. The evening was ably arranged and hosted by the Dos sisters. For our closing affair, the Alumni and Auxiliary will return to one of our favorite venues, the Radnor Country Club. This annual event has always been chaired by the Jacobsons. The Alumni and Auxiliary have been told that there may be an interest in reactivating Beta at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Sciences now known as the University of the Sciences. Some of the Colleges and Universities in the area are opening or contemplating opening Colleges of Pharmacy. The two most recent are Thomas Jefferson University and Drexel University. The Alumni and Auxiliary hope with the help of the Undergraduate Representative and nearby undergraduates that AZO may be able to interest some students in forming a chapter at one or both schools. We are looking forward to some undergraduate activity in the home of Alpha Zeta Omega. Joy Pollock, P.N.P. Detroit Alumni I am happy to report the Detroit Alumni had another productive year. While we did not meet a lot formally, a number of the Fraters met for breakfast, dinner or just to get together. The highlight of our year was the annual Holiday Party where all proceeds are donated to charity. We made significant contributions to a number of local and national charities. Best regards with peace, friendship and brotherly love, Leslie Leibowitz Another year has passed and another banner year in the books for Epsilon. The active and dedicated Epsilon undergraduates under the leadership of Undergraduate Directorum José Argueta had a very impressive and productive year with two new pledge classes yielding 20 fraters. Along with their fall and spring semester pledging periods, they hosted many successful events (philanthropic, professional and social). Epsilon was able to accomplish all the goals set forth this fraternal year. The undergraduates and alumni of this mixed chapter have always worked closely; this year definitely was no different. We started the year with our annual Family Day followed closely by the Rutgers homecoming. In November, we held a charity poker tournament in honor of Frater Jeff Levy for the Lustgarten Foundation. In December, we had our annual holiday dinner to end the first half of the year. Many Epsilon fraters attended the winter convention in Naples to begin the second half of the fraternal year. The New Year marked the return of chapter meetings being held at the Epsilon fraternity house to further encourage the cooperative spirit of the alumni and undergraduates. Epsilon s fraternal year was wrapped up at our annual Closing Affair. It was a night that was filled with fun, dinner, dancing, tradition and fraternalism. This past year s Executive Board were relieved of it s duties, the Executive Board members were installed and our annual awards were presented. Thank you to our Epsilon Undergraduate Service, Si Sless and Ephraim G. Sless award winners, Jessy Kumar, Harjeet Caberwal and Doug Ortiz respectively, for your invaluable and continued service to the chapter and Alpha Zeta Omega. We look forward to officially closing out the fraternal year at the summer convention in Puerto Rico. Thank you to all Epsilon chapter members for the hard work you ve put in this year and to the Supreme Chapter under its guidance of Supreme Directorum Brian Pinto for its continued support. During the year, some members of Epsilon were able to visit New York Alumni, Nu, Sigma, and Tau chapters, as well as host those same chapters here in New Jersey thank you to those chapters for visiting and your corresponding hospitality. Congratulations to the 17 new Epsilon graduates and welcome to the ranks of the alumni. Peace, Friendship and Brotherly Love, John Anciano, P.S.D Epsilon Directorum

JULY 2010 The Azoan PAGE 21 Epsilon Undergraduate Chapter Despite the fact that we found ourselves in a new house this academic year, the Epsilon Undergraduate Chapter had no trouble picking up on the successes of last year. Within the first few weeks of the school year we had already participated and hosted several professional and philanthropic events. In September, we held our annual Where Will Your Pharm.D. Take You? event where several AZO alumni came to speak to the student-body about the many career opportunities available to them as pharmacists. The room was filled to capacity and members of the pharmacy school participated in a question and answer session after the presentation. In mid-november, we held our second Mock Interview Workshop where students were able to practice their interviewing skills on faculty members and professionals in different fields of pharmacy before going to the American Scoiety of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Midyear Clinical meeting in Las Vegas. We held a successful fundraising bake sale for the Be Bold, Be Bald initiative where several members wore bald caps in a show of support for cancer patients everywhere while raising $211 for cancer awareness. For the second year in a row we participated in the High Speed Chase for the Cure 3K Walk/5K Run in which our team, Pharmacy is My Profession (P.I.M.P.), was able to raise $180 in the support of the Cancer Institute of New Jersey. The 2009 Memory Walk was a huge success as we were able to raise $756 for the Alzheimer's Association. The Adopt-a- Family and Rutgers against hunger program was a huge success as we were able to fill five 18 x18 x24 boxes of clothes, toiletries, canned, and non-perishable goods for an underprivileged family right here at Rutgers University. The spring semester built on the successful professional and philanthropic events of the prior semester. Our Speed Networking Workshop (in conjunction with Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy) was a resounding success throughout the pharmacy school. We were able to provide the student-body with an opportunity to speak with alumni in various fields of pharmacy while giving them the chance to practice networking skills. This would not have been as successful without the support and participation of our alumni. In has become a tradition in the Epsilon chapter, six of our members participated in the 32 hour long Dance Marathon at Rutgers to benefit the Embrace the Kids Foundation. This was important to the chapter because we recently adopted an adorable three year old girl who has unfortunately been diagnosed with a blood disorder. Moreover, for the second consecutive year AZO worked with the Student National Pharmaceutical Association to put together the Pharmacy Benefit Gala to promote awareness of Chronic Kidney Disease. Despite the hard work our members put into our professional and philanthropic events, the Epsilon Chapter had a great semester from a pledging and social prospective. The fact we find ourselves further away from campus now than we have in previous years did not keep our rush events from being a huge success in attendance. When it was all said and done we had 20 new members this year thanks to pledge masters Karan Grover and Westley Waller III. Once again the annual homecoming game was a lot of fun and, as always, was a great time for the undergrads to get to know many of the alumni they would otherwise not have been able to meet. We also hosted AZO Epsilon s first ever mixer with Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity at Rutgers University. The event was well attended and everyone there had a great time getting to know and party with members of another professional organization. We capped off our year with our annual closing affairs ceremony and prepared to usher in a successful year at the Epsilon chapter. This was another great fraternal year for the Epsilon Chapter and we look to continue our involvement in our community and elevating our professional status in the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy. We will face many challenges in the future, but I am confident that the combination of strong membership and alumni support we have and will continue to receive will be enough to overcome these tribulations. I wish the newly inducted officers the best of luck. I know they will keep the future of AZO Epsilon shining brightly. 22 PAGE 22 The Azoan JULY 2010 Kappa Chapter worked with the Student Affairs Office to provide white coats for the incoming first years for a second year. This is a great way for us to earn money as we are still a small chapter and don t have the manpower for larger events. In the last few weeks before school ends, we will be participating in Greek Games and hosting a fourth year graduation banquet dinner. Peace, Friendship, and Brother Love, Erienne Nichole Burton Kappa Chapter As the spring semester comes to a close, the members of Kappa Chapter are taking the last of their finals, preparing to start clinical rotations, and for 12 lucky members, anticipating graduation. This year fraters were involved in multiple organizations on campus, participated in volunteer work, hosted a professional forum and attended many of the alumni s monthly CE breakfasts. We kicked off the school year participating in new student orientation, white coat ceremony and rush. As many of you know, Kappa is just getting back into the swing of things, and with 12 of our members graduating this year, we really needed to step up our game. On November 15th, we inducted 13 new fraters into our chapter. For the class of 2013 and beyond, the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy adopted an advanced curriculum. This new method of teaching has been an obstacle for our event planning, but we persevered and managed to hold a fair amount of pledge events, as well as volunteer at our local schools and the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge. Kappa also had a very busy spring semester. Springtime for Kappa has meant rebuilding our name on campus. Fraters have been elected to executive boards in multiple organizations, and half of the Fall 2008 pledge class was inducted into the Rho Chi Society. Three of our members also helped found a new chapter of College of Psychiatric and Neurologic Pharmacy (CPNP). Kappa also formed a team to participate in a speech competition at the School of Pharmacy. We are very proud to say that Ameet Joshi took the 2nd place prize earning us $150. For the second year in a row, fraters participated in an American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay for Life in Baltimore, which was held at John Hopkins University. Eleven members participated in the event, and we once again raised over $1000 for the cause. Kappa donated a Get RA with AZO night to the Class of 2012 auction. By doing so we raised $90 for the class and took four lucky winners out for a sushi happy hour. Our major fundraiser is the white coat sale, and this year was bigger than ever thanks to the hard work and great advertising done by our Fundraising Chair, Aparna Shivananda. Excheque, Erin McCartin, and myself have both Kappa undergrads attending a Kappa Alumni CE presented by Frater Dr. David Rothman. Kappa Alumni AZO Kappa had a very active year. Starting in September, our monthly breakfast meeting had Hoai-An Troung, PharmD, from the University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy speak on Medication Therapy Management (MTM): Rationale, Elements, Perceptions and Outcomes. In October, James Dicke, M.D., an endocrinologist spoke on Diabetes - New Frontiers - Hypoglycemia - A New Black Hole. Michael Kaplan, M.D., PhD., spoke to the chapter in November about Pain Management Update, Part II. For our December meeting, Neha Umesh Sheth, PharmD, University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy, talked about HIV Treatment: The Past, Present and Future. January 2010, Gina McKnight-Smith, PharmD, Clinical Coordinator to Maryland Medicaid Pharmacy Program from Provider Synergies did our annual Update on New Drugs for February was a first for Kappa. We had our first podiatrist speak to the chapter. Craig Friedman, DPM, spoke for two hours about the schooling, training, residency and certification process and spending the second hour of Podiatric Medicine and The Pharmacist. Especially interesting was the reasoning behind choosing of drug over another. In March we had our annual Albert Katz Seminar, which always has cancer as the topic. Doug Smith, M.D., from Johns Hopkins Hospital, spoke about Optimizing Induction Therapy and Improving Outcomes in the Transplant Setting. Our final meeting was the Fritz Berman Seminar. David S. Roffman, PharmD, BCPS/Cardiology, University of Maryland, School of Pharmacy, and KAPPA member, spoke on Hypertension: Are We There Yet Papa Smurf? After all these meetings, it s time for some fun. Sunday evening, June 6, 2010, Kappa will hold the annual June Banquet. PF&BL, Charles Sanders Kappa Alumni

JULY 2010 The Azoan PAGE 23 Psi Undergraduate Chapter Connecticut Alumni Alpha Zeta Omega Pharmaceutical Fraternity, Psi Chapter is going strong since its re-establishment at Nova Southeastern University five years ago. It has been a very exciting year with many activities and philanthropic events to benefit the community. Pledges enjoyed Rush week events at Yardhouse, bowling, luncheon meet-n-greet, and a baseball game. Thirteen new pledges were inducted on November 21, We have participated in a Back-to-School drive collecting school supplies for less fortunate kids, Toys for Tots, Beach Cleanup, and Adopt-a-Road near the West Palm Beach Nova campus. We helped fund-raise for certain charity walks by having Jeans Day events on campus for the American Heart Association, American Diabetes association, and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The brothers of AZO enjoyed social events like Rapids Water Park, our annual Halloween party, beach BBQ s, camping, and spring break at the Dominican Republic. Fraters also got a chance to travel by attending the AZO National Convention in Naples, Florida, being a part of the College of Pharmacy Field day and Community Fest at the main campus, as well as defending our title as returning champs of Greek Wars. Jessica Vargas Psi Chapter Signare Log on to AZO s new website Connecticut Alumni Chapter got off to a rousing start this fraternal year with a great dinner meeting in September at Ruth s Chris Steakhouse in Newington. Our fraters looked forward to this year s plans with much anticipation. October found us at one of our most popular functions, the perennial pizza and pops night. This evening always consists of a trip to the First & Last Tavern for some of their famous pizza followed by a sojourn to the Bushnell Hall for a performance of Club Swing by the Hartford Symphony Pops Orchestra. This concert sure left us all swinging. December s dinner meeting found us at Cugino s Restaurant in Newington. This has always been one of our favorite places, however, they recently closed and we will have to find another venue to satisfy our unquenching desire for Italian food. February found us at Bertucci s Restaurant and we had a chance to sample some of their most popular dishes. Dinner and theater was again on the menu for our May get together which was another night of pizza and pops. The concert titled Cirque De La Symphonie which consisted of Cirque De Soleil type artists performing on stage backed up by the Hartford Symphony Pop Orchestra. This was a fantastic evening of entertainment. During April, some of our alumni had the pleasure of attending an alumni reunion hosted by Nu Chapter at the University of Connecticut campus. The enthusiasm for AZO expressed by our young fraters was certainly heat warming to the alumni in attendance. Our final meeting in June was held at Carmen Anthony s Fishhouse in Wethersfield. Our officers for this year are: Directorum, Harvey Seltzer, Sub-Directorum, Stanley Labinger, Excheque, Burton Miller, Signare, Norman Fleishman, and Bellarum, Sheldon Karasik. 24 PAGE 24 The Azoan JULY 2010 Sigma Chapter Sigma hosted a Prom Party for Little Sisters Poor Nursing Home residents. Sigma has been busy since last year s convention. Naples was a wonderful time and a big thanks to Lou and Gloria for all of their hard work. Back in Toledo another pledging season is in full swing with 12 students pledging this spring. We have been fundraising for many great causes this semester! We led a Haiti fundraiser with the College of Pharmacy selling t-shirts that benefited an orphanage in Haiti. Thank you to the Nu and Tau chapters who also donated money to the cause. We were able to raise $1,350 that went directly to the orphanage. We held our annual Faculty Auction in February with all of the proceeds going toward the purchase of supplies for a medical mission rotation in Honduras. We were able to raise $2,480 in a little over an hour! Our annual Bowl-a-thon was in February and it was a big hit. It was held at the New Glass Bowl Lanes and much fun was had by all who attended. Undergrads from Epsilon and Nu braved the weather to participate in this event. Thank you to both chapters and we hope to visit both of you soon! Sigma has also been networking with other professions too. In mid-april we have a mixer scheduled with an Engineering fraternity. In late April we will be participating in the Interprofessional Health Fair. We will come together with medical, nursing, physical therapy, physician assistants and many other students to provide healthcare counseling and monitoring to the approximate 3,000 community members we are anticipating. Sigma has been involved on the athletic side too. We have teams playing basketball, softball and flag football. Win or lose though it has been fun. We recently held Pharmacy Pheud sponsored by Rite Aid. Ten different pharmacy organizations came together to compete in a pharmaceutical trivia game. It proved challenging but a great time. Upcoming events for Sigma involve holding a prom-themed party at a local nursing home, Activation, our annual 5K race benefiting the American Cancer Society, Deadmans, and a White Water Rafting trip. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in Puerto Rico for the convention. 25 JULY 2010 The Azoan PAGE 25 Philadelphia National Convention Report What better place to celebrate the 90th year of AZO than to return to its birthplace the city of brotherly love Philadelphia. The beautiful Loews Philadelphia Hotel, in downtown Philly, hosted our event from July 15-19, Our first evening honored our Meritorious award recipient, Frater Paul Holly, P.S.D. Afterwards, as with each evening, we went to the hospitality room for fun and games with our own party planner, Agnes Brooks. Thursday after our meetings, and continuing education luncheon, we boarded the buses for an incredible Italian dinner at the famous Spasso Grill in Old City Philadelphia. Friday after our sumptuous buffet breakfast we headed back to the buses to see the highlights of this beautiful city. We relived the Rocky moment as we all ran up the steps to the Philadelphia Museum of Art singing along the way! And what tour of Philadelphia would be complete without a visit to the Liberty Bell topped off by a Philadelpia cheesesteak! Saturday evening was our gala Installation of Officers Dinner and Dance. We honored the new officers, especially the incoming Supreme Directorum, Brian Pinto and the new Auxiliary President, Agnes Brooks. Afterwards, the party really got started with the efforts of our incredible DJ and didn t stop rockin until after midnight. Sunday we said our fond farewells, looking forward to the beautiful Naples Grande in January. Fraternally, Gloria Flacks, P.N.P. Lou Flacks, P.S.D. 28 PAGE 28 The Azoan JULY 2010 Naples Mid-Year Regional Convention Report Lou and I began our drive to Naples, Florida anxiously waiting the moment we could shed our winter coats (perhaps South Carolina?). Well, it never happened! The weather in Naples was perhaps a bit warmer than the weather we left in New York, but it was COLD! This did not stop 150 fraters and their guests from attending the convention making it one of the largest conventions in recent years. The five-star Naples Grande welcomed us with open arms. The food was delicious, the accommodations were beautiful and the hotel property itself was magnificent. Even with the frosty weather, the undergraduates still frolicked in the outdoor hot tub. The first evening brought us to downtown Naples for a gourmet dinner at the Vergina Restaurant. We then went back to our hospitality room for fun and games. The next day was our outing to the Everglades to ride swamp buggies, airboats and hold the alligators! Amazingly, and true to his past performance, Lou arranged for a glorious day in the mid-60 s so we were able to don lightweight clothing to enjoy the day. Saturday, after our meetings, we enjoyed our lunch and another informative continuing education program by Mehul Patel. In the evening we honored our undergraduate award recipient Sharon Chan. After dinner the party continued with loads of wild and crazy dancing highlighted by my nine year old grandson, Andrew who now seems to have a lot of the young girls waiting for him to grow up! From the feedback, it seems the convention (weather and all) was a big success. Hope to see everyone for more fun in Puerto Rico. Fraternally, Gloria Flacks, P.N.P. Lou Flacks, P.S.D. 30 PAGE 30 The Azoan JULY Meritorious Award Recipient The fraternity s oldest individual honor given for long and distinguished service The first photograph of Steve Brooks was taken hours after his birth and published in the New York Daily News; talk about a way to set a precedent! Steve was born on January 1st, 1949 at 00:10 AM in Brooklyn, New York. Born to Benjamin and Yetta Brooks, Steve was the headliner in the paper as the first baby born that year. Who knew, from that moment on, famous Steve Brooks wouldn t only be known on the New York level, but at a national level as well. Steve led a normal childhood, growing up in Brooklyn with his brother Andrew. Steve s parents were very excited for his high school graduation, as neither of them continued schooling after the eighth grade. After his graduation in 1967, Steve avoided the draft by going to college, the first in his family. Before Steve s mother passed way in September of 1967, she made Steve promise to graduate. He enrolled in night classes and worked during the day for the New York Stock Exchange. In April of 1968, less than a year after starting classes, a letter from the government arrived in Steve s mailbox. The heading read Greetings and enclosed was a subway token, one-way transportation to his new job. Steve was first drafted into the Marines, transferred to the Army, and ultimately became a Military Police Officer. As Steve s luck would have it, he was assigned duty in Germany from September 1968 through March Upon discharge from the Army, and still unsure of what to do for a career, Steve obtained a New York City Police Officer Academy application, filled it out, but never handed it in. Then in May of 1973, Steve Brooks, P.S.D., Iota while bowling in a league, Steve s friend was studying pictures of pills, as he was graduating from the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy and preparing for the boards. Steve asked a lot of questions and received answers that must have hit a sweet note, because after that, Steve contacted the school, received a brochure, and applied. He interviewed and was admitted a week later! Steve thought of his promise to his mother and decided that a five-year degree was better than a two-year degree. With backing from his father, Steve enrolled at The Brooklyn College of Pharmacy. In August of 1973, Steve started Pharmacy School in a Bachelor of Science Pharmacy program. He attended class during the day and worked in the evening. In the fall of 1975, the Iota Chapter of Alpha Zeta Omega was reactivated. These new Fraters searched the school for new members, eventually reaching Steve. He was inducted into AZO in February 1976 and became an active undergraduate Frater. From September 1976 to June 1977 Steve served as Iota s Directorum, during which time enrollment went from about five Fraters to approximately 40 Fraters. AZO was thriving at The Brooklyn College of Pharmacy. AZO has a motto of 100% graduation. In the fall of 1977, Steve could see the light at the end of the tunnel. With the help of his AZO friends, and lots of studying, Steve knew he was going to make it. Then in December of 1977, Steve s father passed away, leaving Steve with a void. Days later, in January of 1978, Steve s life was about to change drastically.

July 2010 The Azoan PAGE 31 On January 3rd, while at work, a striking young woman entered the pharmacy to fill a prescription. After hitting it off, Steve and the woman made plans to go on a date on Friday January 6th, again on Saturday and everyday for the next two months. Steve was in love, and after three months he asked the young woman, Agnes, to marry him. Graduating from Pharmacy School in June 1977, Steve fulfilled the promise he made ten years earlier to his mother. Agnes and her parents attended his graduation, warming Steve s heart. With both his parents gone, Steve was happy to be a part of another loving family. On May 12, 1979 Steve and Agnes were married. During their courtship and 31 years of marriage, Agnes has become an integral part in Steve s life. Post graduation, Steve worked in retail. He then tried his hand in hospital Pharmacy, working at the Veterans Administration as a Staff Pharmacist. His love for retail still led him to work evenings at a retail location. In 1986, Steve decided to purchase a Pharmacy, owning Supra Drugs in Brooklyn, New York for 14 years. A devastating fire during June of 2000 destroyed the building, causing Steve to lose his lease and look for new employment. Steve and Agnes opened up Rahway Pharmacy in Rahway, New Jersey where they spent two years helping with the revitalization of the downtown area. As chain stores tried to dominate the growing market, CVS made Steve and offer he could not refuse. He then worked in independent retail until 2005, when Coronary Artery Disease caught up with him, causing him to have a triple bypass. Fully recuperated, Steve returned to Pharmacy, working for Drug Fair, and currently works for Walgreens as a staff and immunizing pharmacist. During Steve s entire career, his professional and family lives have always been connected. Agnes and Steve planned family vacations around AZO functions to attend with their four wonderful children; Andrea, Benjamin, Christina and Daniel. Naming them was a joy; ABCD just like AZO s ABCD cards. In fact, Agnes and Steve left a New York Alumni meeting early to deliver their first child, since Steve insisted they attend the meeting, even though Agnes was having contractions. As an active member in the New York Alumni chapter for over 30 years, Steve held all positions from Bellarum to Directorum. He was awarded the Directorum s Cup during his twoyear tenure, and the Chapter also won the Newspaper award each year. Steve has also implemented community service into all chapter meetings, collecting food at each monthly meeting to donate to local food pantries. With the members of New York Alumni, the true meaning of friendship and Brotherly love became solidified in Steve s mind. Outlasting all friendships from his childhood, these Fraters are true friends whom he can rely on. After urgings from New York Alumni members to attend his first National Convention close to home, Steve attended the meeting in the Catskill region of New York in 1997, where he realized the AZO family was much more than just his local chapter. Over the years, Steve served Supreme on many levels, from AZOan Editor to the highest office, Supreme Directorum during Serving as Directorum during 9/11, the national charity raised over $3,000 for a local firehouse in Brooklyn, New York. A firefighter who lost his life, along with eight others from this location, was a personal friend of Agnes, making the donation a heartfelt one. Another fond moment as Supreme Directorum was the creation of the AZO 50/50 national raffle, which Steve has run for the past nine years since its inception, raising well over $12,000 for Supreme. Steve is a Long Island University Alumni Board member, where over the last 10 years, he helps make policy decisions that affect the school curriculum, plans reunions, and interviews students entering the program. Steve is also a registered Boy Scout leader, serving as Assistant Scout Master for over the last 12 years. Steve s other love is for bowling. For the last 35 years, he has committed to a league, maintaining an average of over 200 per game after a 35-week season. In 1995, Steve threw 12 strikes in a row, a perfect game, and won a diamond gold ring, which he wears proudly. Steve represents what is good in Alpha Zeta Omega, the profession of Pharmacy, and in family. He still strives for the best he can be and the best he can do, inspiring all those around him.

JULY 2010 The Azoan PAGE 33 I Believe No, fraters, I have not become a cleric or a religious prophet and I am neither preaching nor proselytizing, but I am proclaiming certain of my specific fraternal beliefs. These have expanded and have been reinforced over a period of five decades, and they continue to convince me of their steadfast consistency and reliability. I believe that there is no better or finer a profession than pharmacy. The array of humanities and scientific academic training and education is second to none. The range of occupational billets that are encompassed under the pharmaceutical umbrella are exceptional and impressive. From dispensing medication in a community pharmacy to hospital employment, regulatory, military, educational, research, industrial, direct patient care, and forensic choices, ad infinitum, pharmacists practice their coveted profession. I believe that pharmacists, as practitioners of a lifeaffecting vocation, are intensely ethical and are genuinely cognizant of the responsibilities they assume by virtue of their position in the community and in their scientific discipline. Subsequently, time and again the American public recognized pharmacists as the most trusted professionals. I believe that any cluster of like-minded and/or correspondingly licensed professionals will benefit from relationship with an organization that promotes connection with their peers, provides academic training, encourages social interaction, and supports student activities. Consequently, the organization as a whole prospers through the involvement and contribution of each of its members. I believe that pharmacists in particular share the need for a professional and social society because of their foremost impact on public health and the benefit received from interaction with others engaged in the many facets of their essential careers. I believe that no fraternity is superior to AZO. In an undergraduate chapter, AZO provides students with social and educational interface plus the financial and thoughtful assistance of experienced pharmacists in the alumni chapter. Upon graduation, fraters enter into a lifelong relationship with their peers encompassing social, professional, and leadership opportunities in the alumni chapter. That affiliation is enhanced by interaction with the AZO Supreme Chapter and the National Auxiliary, and the scores of fraters that attend the national conventions in enviable venues. Additionally, there are awards, charitable donations, personal and memorial recognitions, and numerous fun activities. I recognize that I have been immeasurably enriched through my association with the Alpha Zeta Omega Pharmaceutical Fraternity, my fellow fraters, members of the National Auxiliary and contemporary undergraduates. The friendships, continuing education, and joyous experiences have been invaluable. Mel Lessing, Supreme Associate Signare What a guy! What can one say about a man named Steve Brooks. I guess a lot of things. But a few come to mind right away. He seems to be a man who wears many hats. I guess it is to cover that cool white hair of his. Steve has kept himself pretty busy for the last years of his life. Let s see, where can I start... besides being a Pharmacist registered to practice in New York and in New Jersey, he is also an avid bowler. His bowling hat is really BIG. He has bowled a perfect game and continues to this day, bowling weekly to keep up his natural form. To give you an idea of his passion for bowling, the night before his son, Ben, was born, he brought his lovely wife, Agnes, to the hospital and he looked perplexed being there at her side; until Agnes told him to go bowling and come back in the morning in time for the C-section. What a guy! To switch hats, he is very active in Boy Scouts and for the last 17 years since he moved from Brooklyn, New York to Edison, New Jersey you can find him at a Boy Scouts meeting on a weekly basis. He will be running a summer program for one week in Rhode Island this August. Currently, he is Assistant Scout Master, and Merit Badge Counselor for personal fitness. What a guy! There s not a fast food that he has not tried or not liked; I guess that earned him a chefs hat. What a guy! Steve s other hat is the educational hat. He is currently on Arnold & Marie Schwartz College of Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences Alumni Board. (How can they put all that name on a hat?) He has served in all positions on the Board except President. What a guy! I think that s it for now; just to get your juices going. Come to Puerto Rico for the next stage of his life... the man who wears many hats. What a guy! John W. Chin, a friend who may know too much.

PAGE 34 The Azoan JULY 2010 Jay L. Pollock Supreme Undergraduate 2010 Recipient An annual award presented to an Undergraduate Frater in recognition of his/her achievements in scholarship, leadership, extracurricular activities and service to the fraternity. Frater Sharon Chan, Tau RECIPIENT OF THE 2010 JAY L. POLLOCK UNDERGRADUATE AWARD Sharon Chan was born and raised in the Lower East Side of New York City. Around her transition to high school, Sharon and her family relocated to Marlboro, New Jersey where she currently resides. Throughout her early years Sharon was always a superb student, but her interests stretched much farther than the classroom. She was an avid musician with an outstanding talent for the piano, She was also active in Key Club, Habitat for Humanity, Student Council and the Health Careers Club during her years at Marlboro High School. While at home Sharon remains a dedicated employee at CentraState Medical Center as a pharmacy intern. Her interest in pharmacy brought her to the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (MCPHS) to pursue her PharmD; while this was farther from her home than other institutions, experiencing life in a new city and the vast educational opportunities within Boston were unbeatable. Through her extensive array of activities and talents, a common thread throughout Sharon s life remains service to those around her. Throughout her time at MCPHS Sharon has held a multitude of prestigious and influential leadership positions. Sharon was a peer mentor and orientation leader who served to assist freshman students in becoming acclimated to their new school and surroundings. Over the last several years she also served as a microbiology teaching assistant and acted as the Student Government Association Treasurer, Campus Activities Board Vice President and Treasurer, an worked with Habitat for Humanity over Spring Break to build houses in Tampa, Florida. As a recent credit to her tremendous leadership talent, Sharon was elected as president of Phi Lambda Sigma, the pharmacy leadership honor society. Not only is Sharon a highly regarded leader within her school, she does so with care and consideration for all. Although extremely involved within her college, there remained a void in Sharon s overall college experience. That empty space was filled when Sharon pledged Alpha Zeta Ωmega in her second year of pharmacy school. She was drawn to the women of the Tau Chapter as they exemplified what she felt was lacking, a tight family-like bond with each other and commitment to a nationwide brotherhood. The more she learned, the more Sharon fell in love with the organization and went on to take an active leadership role in the years to come. Sharon has held the positions of Historian, Undergrad Rep Council Member, Recording Signare, and most recently Pledge Master. With each office Sharon went above and beyond the call of duty; her deep passion and commitment to ΑΖΩ is demonstrated in all that she does. Because of her involvement, the Tau Chapter has experienced not only growth in numbers, but a more diverse array for philanthropic, social, and professional events. With her continued dedication to our organization, both on a chapter and national level, Sharon has clearly demonstrated her passion for the advancement of Alpha Zeta Ωmega. Sharon has dedicated a significant amount of time, energy, and love to ΑΖΩ over the years. While she will attest how much she has personally gotten from the Fraternity, her service to the organization is nothing short of remarkable. Sharon is currently a fifth year student and will begin clinical rotations this summer. She plans to pursue a residency or fellowship post-graduation. Sharon will remain an active contributor to ΑΖΩ throughout the years to come regardless of what road life takes her. With her abundant talent, Sharon holds a bright future within the profession of pharmacy as well as with our incredible organization. Sharon serves as an example to all, as a great student, talented leader, and dedicated Frater. Her contributions to Alpha Zeta Ωmega are vast and will not soon be forgotten. Hilary Marks

PAGE 48 The Azoan JULY 2010 In Memoriam Manuel I. Fiel P.S.D., Beta May 8, 1928 December 19, Supreme Directorum On Saturday, December 19th, 2009 at a little after 7 A.M., I received a call from Arlene that my friend of 60 years, who had given his efforts to AZO both locally and nationally, was no longer with us. Manuel Manny Fiel was born on May 8th, 1928, in the city of Philadelphia. He entered the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in Manny was inducted into the Beta chapter in The Philadelphia Alumni chapter always welcomed the undergraduates to their meetings and functions while still in college. Manny was directorum of Beta in His first convention was in 1951 in Cincinnati. He attended the convention in New York with his bride to be, Arlene Sylk with the Jacobson s as chaperones. After graduating in 1953, Manny entered the U.S. Army and went to San Antonio, Texas and Fort Dix, New Jersey. In 1955, Manny came home to Pharmacy and AZO. Manny went into retail pharmacy with his brother Paul in Northeast Philadelphia and continued in retail until the late 70s. He then worked for a mail order firm and continued in his chosen profession in nursing home pharmacy until he retired to Clearwater, Florida in He was Directorum of the Philadelphia Alumni chapter in 1963 and He worked with Frater Moe Abrams to start the CE Seminar programs in Philadelphia. He did this up until he moved to Florida in Although living in Florida, he remained active in the Philadelphia Alumni and also consulted for the CE program. In 2003, Manny joined the National family as Sub-Directorum and was inducted at the convention in Aruba as Supreme Directorum in Manny loved his family to the fullest. He leaves his wife Arlene of almost 59 years and three daughters, Sheryl, Kathi and Robin. He had seven grandchildren and the light of his life, great-granddaughter, Lily. Manny will be missed by many people. Family, friends and above all, his AZO brothers. May he rest in peace. Ernie Jacobson, P.S.D.

JULY 2010 The Azoan PAGE 49 In Memoriam Annette Weinstein P.N.P. June 21, 1941 April 30, and National Auxiliary President Although Annette Weinstein was a woman of small stature, she was a woman with huge personality! She loved to laugh, be with her friends, enjoy her family both personal and AZO, making jewelry and being Woody s wife. One could hardly talk about either one of them without saying the other s name. It was always Woody and Annette did such and such or Annette and Woody said... It will be difficult going to their home and not see her at the kitchen table doing her nails, or playing her handheld electronic games watching her TV shows. That is where she used to make signs for a local bakery chain using her beautiful calligraphy skills for the signs that were hung in the bakeries all over town. She even tried being a business woman twice! She owned a purse shop and then a Lucite business, both backed by her generous and loving husband. It s not difficult remembering all the wonderful fun times she shared with us. She was a Past National President, serving twice. She loved AZO making it a large part of her life. In fact, it all began when Rose and Sidney Hillman fixed her up with Woody at the 1961 AZO National Convention held in Cincinnati. And the rest is history! She and Woody attended almost every convention and regional until recent years, when health issues prevented them from coming. When we used to drive to Philly, New York, St. Louis, Cleveland, Chicago, and other cities, the car ride was hilarious. There was tons of laughter, lots of talking and a few heated discussions. Some of those heated ones were about Woody s driving or her own, claiming she wasn t driving too fast, although from the back seat, I noticed the speedometer was very much tilted to the right side!!! Yikes!!! Then we stopped driving and flew to the venues and shared time in airports waiting for the plane or our luggage together. Woody and Annette held a fantastic 40th wedding anniversary party seven years ago for themselves. They wanted to celebrate with their family and friends just because... no special reason. It was a delightful affair, as were the Bar Mitzvahs and weddings for their children, Harvey, Robin, and Steve. Quick spur-of-the-moment dinners or planned dinners after the theatre were spent over the past forty years. When we were silk-screening the needlepoint canvasses for a National Fundraiser, she and I were spraying over a garbage can, when we heard a strange noise in the garage! Woody, Woody, come quick, there is an animal out here. Well, it s been so long ago, I don t remember the outcome, except the three of us were running like scared children about to be punished severely. We were laughing and screaming-we always had so much fun. The last few years were quieter; since she had been ill with COPD and just couldn t do the things she loved doing. We still would get together and go for a quiet dinner and go to the plays that we all loved, until a couple of months ago, when she just couldn t gather up the strength to go out. I think she spent all her energy years ago and the energy left her on April 30, She left us with many great memories. Let s remember her always laughing in the background! Lois Seidenman, P.N.P.
