Our growth is increasingly enabling our Chamber to organize, inform, and speak out on matters of concern to a number of leading companies in important industrial sectors in Denmark, says Stephen Brugger, AmCham s Executive Director. Chris Devries, Managing Director, Citigroup Denmark, and Torben Juul Andersen, Associate Professor, Copenhagen Business School, bring strong financial and research backgrounds to the Chamber. Chris Devries Devries says that exchanging information and corporate responsibility are the key reasons why he agreed to serve on the board. Splitting his time between Citigroup s operations in The Netherlands and Denmark, Devries also serves as President of the American Chamber of Commerce in The Netherlands. He says that each Chamber can learn from the other. For example, AmCham Netherlands publishes Priority Points, which presents the views of its 1,200 members on tax issues, social policies, infrastructure, corporate governance, and IT, among others. This may be of interest to AmCham Denmark, he says. On the other hand, AmCham Denmark s initiatives and activities are good models for the Dutch Chamber, particularly AmCham Denmark s July breakfast with Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert, with which Devries was impressed. Torben Juul Andersen, Chris Devries, Associate Professor, Managing Director, Copenhagen Business Citigroup Denmark School Torben Juul Andersen Andersen returned to Denmark in July after spending the past nine years teaching at George Mason University in Northern Virginia, The Johns Hopkins University s School of Professional Studies, and The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. He was previously with Nordea and Citigroup. For Andersen, serving on the board is an opportunity to present issues that hopefully are relevant to members. These include updating members on new and relevant developments in management research, he says. This is also a two-way street, an opportunity for me to learn what are the real issues executives here in Denmark are involved with right now. Andersen is particularly interested in global management issues, and trans-atlantic relations. In 2003, 41 new members joined the Chamber. Of AmCham Denmark s 200 Member companies, % of the total are US companies, or those with a US controlling interest, and 74 are Danish companies. Motorola A/S, an AmCham Denmark Patron Member, welcomed about 100 executives, employees, and public officials to its 75th anniversary celebration at the company s Glostrup headquarters on September 25. 4 Event Reviews Geoffrey Morson, attorney and Consultant, Eversheds Law Firm joins Eversheds attorney Helen Betant and Troels Askerud, Eversheds Managing Partner, on October 7. EU Law Complex But Unified, AmCham Members Told Businesses need to know two things about European Union laws: 1) Major laws within a member country match those in every other member country; and 2) Despite this, indexing, numbering, language, cross-referencing, and wording length differences make it extremely difficult for businesses to navigate through and decipher this unified EU approach. Even so, national laws within member states are not uniformly coded, numbered, cross-referenced, written in ways that clearly qualify their relative importance, nor are they speedily translated, making the EU s unified approach hard to see. The question for international businesses is how to navigate through the many thousands of laws to find which one applies in a given country. Morson described The Law of Europe: a Unified Approach to Major EU Legislation, Evershed s book and customizable CD database that index and cross-reference 288 of the EU s master directives/ regulations as well as European Court of Justice referrals. Møller - Mærsk; Kevin Fix, TDC; and Geoffrey Morson, Eversheds Law Firm, gather at the Eversheds event AmCham Business News November 2003 Geoffrey Morson, an attorney in the U.S. and consultant with Eversheds Law Firm, told about 30 AmCham Denmark Members and guests that vast, complex, and voluminous EU laws, cases, directives, and decisions can intimidate businesses looking to operate across borders. Morson spoke at an AmCham breakfast, October 7 at the SAS Radisson. EU laws and legal precedents range from the seemingly ludicrous ones that dictate the permissible shape of cucumbers for market or how to tag the ears of bulls, for example to major directives with enormous implications for businesses, such as ones on general product safety, telecommunications licensing, insolvency, and workplace health and safety. Although voluminous, the EU s approach is unified, with laws that are interpretable, predictable, and sensible, Morson said. In a sense, EU regulations, statutes, and codes are fewer and more uniform than those facing businesses in California or New York, each of which, incidentally, can have contradictory laws because of state sovereignty. EU law is always national law. In other words, major Danish laws on equal pay or parental leave are matched by various agreements, acts, or codes in every other EU member nation. Major regulations are unified throughout the EU. The bottom line: being able to navigate laws and codes across borders will enable businesses to shift a perception of the EU as a mysterious place, as Morson noted, to one more attractive for investment and relocation.
