Have the class listen to, and then evaluate, what they thought of the podcast and what the maker of it was trying to share. 4. Have everyone in the class share what kinds of podcasts they would enjoy making. Project 1: A Voice for adio ATH: Have each student create an autobiographical podcast that explains situations where mathematics was used at an advantage. SCIENCE: When creating their autobiographical podcast, students must give all of their personal statistics in both English and metric units. ENGLISH: Have students create a biographical podcast of a character from a recent story or novel covered in class. HISTOY: BACKGOND Have students create a podcast incorporating research, factual information, and trivia about the day they were born. Answer the following questions about yourself. What is your name? Where do you go to school? How tall are you? What is your age? What are your hobbies? What do you do for fun? What type of career would you like to have when you finish school? & O & What are some interesting facts about you that others may find interesting? eview all of the information you wrote down and rearrange it into a short autobiography. The autobiography must be easily read aloud from beginning to end and must be written in complete sentences. Practice reading your autobiography aloud several times. Before reading, review the guidelines on natural pausing, intonation, and clarity and use them while reading. The quality of your speaking voice is one of the biggest factors in a successful recording. You may have a very interesting autobiography, but no one will listen if they are not able to understand or do not want to listen to your voice. Once you feel comfortable reading your autobiography, begin recording with the audio recorder. ead your entire autobiography from beginning to end, focusing on proper pausing, intonation, and clarity. POJ 1: A VOICE FO ADIO about me CICL SAPLE 4
5. eview your entire recording by playing it. Listen to how your voice sounds and if it is easy to listen to and understand. If necessary, delete the recording and begin again. 6. Once you are satisfied with your autobiography, podcast and share your recording with others to let them learn a little more about you! Podcast eview: 1. Was your voice easy to understand? What helped you speak clearly? What might help you to speak better? POJ 1: A VOICE FO ADIO 2. How do autobiographies help others understand you? 3. How does the clarity and quality of your speaking voice directly affect your podcasts? 4. What common speaking mistakes did you make? Did you notice others having the same difficulties? 5 CICL SAPLE
PL E equired Length: Computer Computer with icrophone Speakers 0:10 0:20 1. With permission, take your audio recorder, a piece of paper and a pencil, and go outdoors. 2. Find three locations of varying noise levels. One that is very quiet, IC one that is moderate, and one that is very loud. Examples: Quiet: A calm forest. A quiet suburban neighborhood in the middle of the night. An empty hallway when everyone is in class. oderate: A busy shopping center. A noisy classroom. Loud: A factory. The sidewalk next to a busy street. Write down the location you chose for each sound level. Quiet: oderate: Loud: C recorder at each of the locations. Choose sounds of varying volume levels at each of the locations. For example, the sound of leaves gently rustling in a breeze will be quiet, a dog barking is moderate, and the siren of a fire truck will be loud. L IN THIS POJECT, YO WILL ECOD SONDS FO YO ENVIONENT. 4. Select three unique sounds you would like to capture with your audio SA Audio ecorder Portable and Headphones Speakers & O At each location, close your eyes and listen for a unique or interesting sound, such as a bird chirping, a dog barking, or water running through a creek bed. 5. Write down three sounds for each location, what causes them, and whether or not they will be easy or difficult to record: Quiet Location: Sound 1: Sound 2: Sound 3: & POJ 2: SONDS OF OTSIDE 3. Travel to each of the locations individually. aterials: Pencil and Paper 6
PL E POJ 2: SONDS OF OTSIDE : 7. Once you are ready to record your sounds, conduct a sound level test to be sure the sound is at the appropriate level. L SA To conduct a sound level test: 1. Place the audio recorder into its sound test mode. (If you are using a microphone on a computer, you may skip this step.) 2. Simulate recording the sound. You want the sound test to be as close to an actual recording as possible. 3. Watch the sound meters on the recording device. The meters should average around -6 decibels and never above 0 decibels. If they do, the sounds will be distorted. 4. If your sound meters are too low or too high, you will need to adjust your recording. To adjust your recording, try changing the gain on the audio recorder, or place the recorder closer or farther away from the sound source. IC Loud Location: Sound 1: Sound 2: Sound 3: 6. Familiarize yourself with your audio C recorder. The basic features used in this exercise will be the record, stop, and play features. Be sure to have headphones connected to the recorder. EN 8. Listen to the sounds through the headphones. The way the sounds are heard through the headphones is the way they will sound in the finished recording. If you cannot hear the sound, the recorder cannot record it. 9. Once the sound levels are accurate, record oderate Location: Sound 1: Sound 2: Sound 3: the sounds of your choice, and then stop recording. 7
10. Play back the sound recording and listen to 2. Which sound was the most difficult to record and why? Which location was the most difficult to record in? Why? make sure it is clear and identifiable. If the recording is unclear, record the sound again until you are satisfied. 11. Continue recording sounds until all nine of your sounds have been acquired. 12. Play back the recording for your class and see if they are able to identify each sound. 3. What is gain? Podcast eview: 1. Was your class able to identify the sounds? Why or Why not? Which ones were most difficult to identify? POJ 2: SONDS OF OTSIDE 4. What techniques did you find helpful in acquiring quality recordings? CICL SAPLE 8
CHALLENGE ONE: SOETHING TO BE KNOWN BY Create a personalized greeting and sign-off line that you will use in all future podcasts. The greeting is how you will start all of your radio shows and/or podcasts and the way in which listeners will be able to recognize you. For example, This is crazy Jay signing in to say hello and to bring you more fun times. Personalize your greeting to represent you. Your sign-off line is something you will say at the end of your shows and is a way to say good-bye to your listeners. For example, Thanks for listening, it's been fun. Be careful out there, it's a big world. Create a recording of each and re-record them until you are satisfied with how they sound. Listen to several different radio shows for ideas if necessary. Hint... Create greeting and sign off lines that represent your personality. This will make them sound more natural when you speak them. Think About How do your signature lines represent you? How did you personalize them? 2. How do reoccurring signature lines help others identify with your work? 3. What are other reoccurring things could be added to help others recognize your program? Journal Entry: use additional paper if necessary CICL CHALLENGES CHALLENGE TWO: SONDS OF A THEE Choose (or have assigned to you) a theme that all of your sounds will match. For example: all the sounds need to be created by friction, electricity, nature, echo, or chemical reactions. se your audio recorder to record a quiet, moderate, and loud sound of each in a variety of locations. ecord which sounds were the easiest to record and which were the most difficult. Also, note what obstacles you had to overcome to acquire each. Hint... Adjust your audio recorder by using the gain (or similar features) to accommodate for the sound levels around you. Think About Which sound did you find the most difficult to record? Which one was the easiest? Why? 2. What difficulties did you have to overcome to record sounds in a loud environment? What techniques did you use? 3. Were there sound issues that you couldn t overcome? Describe them. Journal Entry: use additional paper if necessary SAPLE 9
