Telling & Producing Stories with Video S ession One: Editing and Engineering (6 weeks) Session Two: Production and Interviewing (3 weeks) Session Three: Telling Your EngEx Stories (6 weeks) I-Have-A-Dream Program, Angevine Middle School Spring 2017
Interviewing Tips 1. Prepare your questions in advance. 2. Position your interviewee so he/she is looking at you just to the right or left of the camera (on the opposite side of the camera than you.) Have the interviewee just off center in the camera shot. Use the Rule of Thirds as shown and discussed in class. 3. Prepare your questions but be spontaneous and natural. 4. Avoid yes and no questions. 5. Get the interviewee comfortable. Ask the subject easy questions to warm him/her up. 6. Avoid giving your interviewee the questions in advance but do tell the interviewee about what you are interested in. Talk to him/her in advance if you can. 7. Have the subject work the question into his/her response. This is critical if there will be no interviewer's voice in the video. 8. Stay quiet when the interviewee is speaking. Otherwise, you will ruin the footage. 9. Ask for final thoughts or anything you missed that he/she would like to add at the end of the interview. 10. Don t stop the camera when the interview is over. Put the interviewee at ease. Be confident, energetic & friendly. Take control. Smile often!

Could you have become an engineer on your own? Why or why not? f. What courses helped you follow the path to where you are today? g. Did you do well in MS, HS and college? 4 My Questions Questions Other:
Key LIght Interviewer Back Light or Hair Light Subject Camera Fill Light Camera lens is about 6 above eyes. Subject is off-center (Rule of Threes). The key light is the main light. It is usually the strongest and has the most influence on the look of the scene. It is placed to one side of the camera at about 45 degrees from the subject and about 45 degrees above him/her. The fill light is placed on the opposite side of the key light and fills the shadows on the subject caused by the key light. It is usually a softer light placed at eye level. The backlight separates the subject from the background and lights the subject from the rear. It typically lights the head and shoulders from above. Two other lights can shine on the background if desired. THREE-POINT LIGHTING
TEAM ONE Interviewer 1 Interviewer 2 Camera 1 Camera 2 Lighting Sound Interviewer #1 puts the interviewee at ease and asks him or her questions from those suggested by classmates. The interviewer must ensure that the interviewee includes each question in his or her answer. Camera #1 refers to the person behind the main camera. He or she will work with an EngEx Coach to ensure that the best exposed video footage of the interviewee is captured. He/she tells the interviewer when footage is rolling and to begin. Camera #2 refers to the person behind the second camera on the set who is responsible for capturing an additional angle of the interviewee. He or she will work with an EngEx Coach to ensure the best possible footage. Sound is responsible for putting the lavaliar microphone on the subject and/or capturing sound with a Zoom recorder. Camera #1 and #2 must confirm hearing sound with his/her headphones on when the camera is running. My name:
