1 Book Talk Contract Name: Contract Due Date: My Current Lexile: The Lexile of the book you are choosing: Choose a book based on all or most of these factors: Lexile number High quality literature Interest in the book New to you (choose a book you have NOT read) Look for awards like Newbery Medal Winner, Honor Books, Children's Choice Book Awards, etc as indicators of quality literature. I n addition, your child should have an interest and passion for the literature chosen. Please use all these factors to help choose your novel. Please use the various links on my website to search for book choices. If your child has an interest in an amazing, high quality novel that is slightly below their Lexile, encourage them to bring it in for approval. Lexile is not the only factor for choosing a book. Don t say no to a great book just because the lexile may be lower. The goal of Book Talks is two fold. One to have your child excited about books! Two to share great quality books with other students.) My Book Choice: Author: Presentation Date for Book Talk: Parent Signature: Mrs. Stutesman ELA
2 Title of book Author: Presenter s Name: Block: Date: Evaluator s Name: Introduction: (title, author, genre Wow! Sounds like a cool book! I m listening! Way to start with a bang! You included the title, author and genre. Good introduction. It just lacks that spark of excitement. Some of the required information is missing. You forgot to tell us something important, but you did try to introduce it. Most of the required information is No introduction. Summary (setting, characters and plot). Well organized and informative. You provided lots of interesting information about the book s main events/ideas & some important details in your own words. Mostly organized & informative. You provided lots of detailed information about the book in your own words Somewhat organized. Lacks detailed information. Summary was not in your own words. Did you read the book? Main parts are missing and summary is not in your own words. Passage You chose a passage that was less than half a page to read. You explained exactly why you chose this passage and why it is important. The passage was too long or short or no explanation was given. The passage was too long or short AND no explanation was given. No passage. No explanation. Connections Yes! You really related to the book. Your connections were clearly stated and beyond surface level. Yes, you connected to the book. Your connections need to be more clearly stated. You connected to the book. Your connections need to be clear and beyond surface level. Didn t connect to any part of the book. Conclusion and Recommendation You really wrapped up it up. You told who would be interested in your type of book and why. Mostly well-done. You told who would be interested in reading your book. You told who might be interested in reading the book. No recommendation I m done That s it Professionalism You are a true pro! You were prepared, organized & calm. You made eye contact. You might need to prepare a bit more. You made sufficient eye contact. Hmm. Something is lacking. Please practice next time. Limited eye contact. Unprepared. No eye contact. Voice Fast enough, loud enough & you sounded enthusiastic. Pace & volume were mostly good. Some enthusiasm detected. Pace & volume could be improved. May have been somewhat Too fast (or too slow!)
