Back Talk Directions: The objective of the game is for the children to honor their parent s requests in the proper way. Have three sets of cards. One set is what a parent would say to their child (these cards are in red). Another set is a disrespectful response from a child to the parent. Another set of cards is what the child should say to their parent. Shuffle the cards and deal them completely out. Have the players put their cards face up in from of them so that others can see and read their cards and help them if necessary. By taking turns, have one child start with what a parent would say and read it out loud. After they have read the card, they place it in the middle of the table face up. The rest of the players then check their cards to see if they have one that says what a disrespectful child would say to their parent in response in this situation. If they have the card, they read it out loud and place it face up next to the first card. Then the players look at their cards to see if they have what a child should say to their parent. If they have the card, they read it out loud and place it face up next to the second card. Players can also play in teams so they can help each other answer the questions. Discussion: What are some answers to parents that you should not use? How would your parents feel if you responded with some of the back talk answers that we heard? What are some answers that honor your parents? The next time your parents ask you to do something you don t want to, how will you answer them? For younger children: (use question sheet) Read out loud what a parent would say to their child. Then read the two answers provided. Have the students tell you which answer is back talk and which answer honors their parents. Or they can just tell you which answer is the best to honor their parents.

Time for dinner! I m not hungry! I m coming! Would you please feed the dog? I fed the dog yesterday. You do it. Sure. I bet the dog is hungry. Did you do your homework? I hate homework! I need some help with my homework. Would you please help me? I m sorry, but you can t go.

All the other kids get to go. Why can t I?! Yes, ma am or yes sir. Maybe I can go next time. Please set the table. I m busy playing video games right now so I can t set the table. Okay. Let me pause the game and I ll set the table. How was your day today? Don't ask me how my day was! Fine. How was your day? Please clean your room today. My room isn t dirty!

Is it okay to clean my room after I come back from soccer practice? Time for bed. Just five more minutes! Or I m not tired! Yes, ma'am or sir. I love you, goodnight (to other family members). Please start on the dishes. Why can t someone else do the dishes? Okay, I ll start the dishes right now. Please cut the grass. The grass isn t long! It doesn t need cutting! Okay, I ll cut the grass.

Please hurry so we won t be late. I don t want to go! You can t make me! I will hurry. You didn t do your chores today. So what! What s the big deal that I didn t do those stupid chores! I m sorry. I will do my chores now. It won t happen again. That is a disrespectful tone of voice. (Rolls eyes dramatically thinking their tone of voice wasn t bad at all.) I m sorry I used that tone of voice. You will need to do this chore again because it wasn't done well.

But I already did the stupid chore! Yes, mom! I will do the chore right this time. What did your father say? Dad said no, but I thought you might say yes! Dad said no. Sorry, I should not have asked you too. Don't make fun of your father. But Dad is so ridiculous! I m sorry Dad for making fun of you. We are not done talking to you. (Shrugs and walks off to end the conversation.)

(Returns and looks at parent in the eyes.) Please turn that music down! Oh, give me a break! It s not that loud! I will turn it down right now. Since you broke curfew, you are grounded for a week. That stinks! Everyone my age can stay out that late! I m sorry that I stayed out pass my curfew. You re not going out dressed like that! What I m wearing is cool! You know absolutely nothing about style! Everyone wears them! Okay, I will take it off and wear something else.

This kind of behavior will not be tolerated! Mom/Dad, you need help! I act the way I want to! I m sorry I behaved like that. We do not use that kind of language! I can use any kind of language that I want! All the kids talk this way! I m sorry that I used that kind of language. I won t do it again. Time to get in the tub/shower. NOOOOO! I don't want to! I m not dirty! Yes, Mom! I played outside all day and really need it! Do not hit your brother/sister.

But he/she hit me first! I'm sorry. I'll keep my hands to myself. Please do not throw things in the house. But Mom, we're being careful! Okay, Mom. We don't want to break anything. While we were gone, we heard you had someone in the house. You know that is not allowed. Who said I had someone in the house?! Nothing happened so what s the big deal?! I m sorry that I had someone in the house when you were not here.
