3 I.Introduction Ibeganteachingmariachiin 1990 atgarciaelementary School in Alice, Texas to 4th andsth grade sfudents who learnedto play violin, gaitar, vlhaela, and gaitanon. I followed those students to Adams Middle School and Alice High School. Included with those students were my daughter Mimi (violin and voice), andmy sons Luis (trumpet and voice) and Anthony (guitarron and voice). Ayear after Anthony graduated from high school (2002) Ibegan teaching mariachi full time at Scobee and McAuliffe Middle Schools in San Antonio, Texas (2003). After working as fine arts administrator at Southwest ISD I became martachi and orchestra director at Edgewood Fine Arts Academy in After retiringin started to compile teaching materials thatl created to share with the next generation music teachers. I hope you find them helpful as well as fime-saving. After all, it took me 23 years to fry them out and work out the kinksl II. How To Use Beginner Mariachi Resource Books Beginner Mariachi Resource Books are compiled in a way that a first time mariachi director can teach beginner mariachi students with materials provided. The Suggested Scope and Sequence is merely an outline which can be changed depending on the availability of instruments, student ability, time, or other factors. If no instruments are available the director can start with the Beginner Mariachi ocalist Resource Book teaching vocal technique and music notation (theory). If instruments are available then divide the class into violin sectiory trumpet sectioo guitar/vihuela section and guitarron section. Teach from the first part of each instrument resource books which include care of the instrument, holding the instrument, playing notes or chords, etc. Always be teaching the music notation (theory) as you teach playing. Once all students can play three notes the director can move into First Mariachi Studies in the Key of G Part L followed by Part Make sure all students learn to play all the exercises and memorize all songs. Continue with Key of D Part'/., and,z, Key of A Part 1 and 2, making sure all students learn to play all the exercises and memorize all songs. It is optional to learn Key of E. The director may want to start with the Beginner Mariachi Songs. These were placed in a sequential order that I used but the director may choose a different order. When practicing play standing up. Students can sit during breaks. Set up from left to right with violins, trumpets, guitarrory guitars, and vihuelas. ocalists will be in the front. Use a PA system for the vocalists. This will be the setup that is used in competitions. Always have a warm up routine. Work on scales, arpeggios, chords, vocal technique (everyone sings, no excuses), mariachi history, composerg performers (singers and mariachi groups) listen to CDs, watch video excerpts, and go over music notation (theory) basics. At the first concert your students can share mariachi history with the audience. If the kajes are not in on time have students wear white shirts/blouses, black pants/skirts, black shoes/boots and a red mofros (ties). Make sure to video record the concert and take pictures. If there is something I missed or you would like to add to the Beginner Mariachi Resource Books let me know. I hope it helps successfully starts your mariachi program and motivates your students to continue learning more through high school and beyond. My daughter and sons benefitted tremendo:isly from being in the mariachi program. Here's hoping you and your students the best! PREIEW z
