1 Part 3: I m a little monkey With Real VIOLIN and REAL BOW time! HOW DO I HOLD MY BOW??? 9 EASY STEPS 1. Pick up your stick at the FROG (bottom of stick) 2. Wrap your fingers around the wood. (Hang fingers over between knuckle 1and 2) 3. Pinky goes on top of the stick. 4. Thumb goes on the bottom of the stick and it is bent 5. Spread fingers apart. This is very important. 6. REMEMBER DON T TOUCH THE HORSE HAIRS!!! 7. Use your rosin everyday 8 strokes all the way and all the way down. This is the sticky stuff that makes your bow sound. 8. Remember to play between your bow stickers and stay on the ROAD. Stay off the fingerboard (or flowerbed) and move your bow with tiny strokes up and down. The more you press, the squeakier the sound, so hold your bow gently!! 9. Say the words to the song when you play. Last thing, Left Hand Fingers push hard on fingerboard and Right Hand Fingers hold the bow GENTLY. OPPOSITE TIME!
2 Before you start: Place bow on A, E String. Move it in little up and down motions. Keep arm in L shape A0 A0 A0 A0 A0 A0 I m a lit tle mon key A1 A1 A1 A1 A1 A1 Climb ing up the lad der A2 A2 A2 A2 A2 A2 Climb ing to the top, To A3 A3 A3 A3 A3 A3 pick a pink ba na na! 3 What do I need to practice with my REAL VIOLIN???? Remember to fill in your 100 charts! Practice one thing once = colour in 1 box. 1. Attaching sponge to violin with elastic band. It goes under the back side of the violin. Make sure your sponge is attached prior to REST position. 2. Rest position with real violin (follow steps indicated) Scoop up violin, remember to watch the BRIDGE- do not squash it!! 3. Play position hold. (count to 10, stand on one foot, walk around, etc.) Is your violin on your shoulder seam???? Are your jaw, nose, elbow and violin foot pointing to the LEFT? 4. Bow scrubbing practice (follow instructions provided). Remember to stay in your L zone with your bow arm. 5. BOW practice with I m a little monkey song. Can you play on the tips of your fingers, push down on the tips and make a clear sound and move your bow arm?? If not, push down harder. Remember to play on your STICKERS. Practice song lots. Sing along when playing. Perform it for others. Practice in different parts of your house. 6. Practice pizzicato with mirror- remember ONE string at a time and make sure you are on the FINGERBOARD. 7. Learn to take good care of your violin. Find a dry cloth, clean your violin. Take your sponge off when you are finished practicing.
4 Remember to hand your sheet in once you have filled it in! Special violin practice treats are waiting for you!

6 Are you making a nice sound when you are playing?? Here are some things that can help with nice sound making! 1. Violin hold- what is holding your violin????? It should be your SHOULDER,JAW/ CHIN! To avoid injuries later on in life with your neck muscles, please make sure your violin is on your shoulder and that your jaw is clamping down on the actual violin. This violin positioning can be the cause of a lot of frustration until you find the perfect spot for it. It is sooooo important to take the time and adjust sponge where needed. Practice in mirror can help too so you see where to put it! You may need to adjust (cut down or have a larger) SPONGE in order to find the perfect place. Remember your shoulder seams are there to guide you with your violin placement. If anything, move your violin back from the start in order to help with the placement. Your LEFT HAND is simply there to play the notes NOT to hold your violin!!! Remember to have a pretend Water Balloon is between your LEFT HAND ARM and LEFT HAND SIDE. Be careful not to pop it. 2. Bow Hold- Remember your "close your eyes" magic trick. Pinky near top and thumb BENT on bottom of stick. Other fingers wrap around. BOW SOUNDS: Bunny sounds (soft hold)- No turtles (loosen up the hold!) Practice Bow exercises- Windshield wipers (more wrist movt. than arm movt.); stirring the soup; Up like a rocket.. 3. LH thumb position-always holding violin neck, however it is hidden. Place underneath the fingerboard (or black part!) 4. Placing LH fingers on fingerboard- use your 1 st bottom line to indicate where to hold finger when not playing a note. The finger should point up but must also have contact at the line with the violin. When playing a note, make sure you are: Pressing down on the tip of the finger look for a string print on the tip of the finger. LH wrist straight not touching the violin. (Think "Bear cave") 7. When placing 3 fingers down on A string: - Bow moves up to A string first then STOPS - Then fingers are placed down in order: 1, 2, 3. (Make sure fingers are on the stickers; make sure you can see little bit of the sticker!) - Press down with the fingers and play. - Lift off one finger at a time. 3 then 2 then 1 then fingers are straight up for open string.
