5 Cadenza Maya Woden Cadenza; an improvised solo Cadenza s are small and stylish outdoor musical instruments for one player which immediately bring smiles to their players and listeners alike. Alumba Strong, weather-proof and durable, the notes are arranged as a traditional xylophone or glockenspiel with low to high notes going from left to right. Aluminium Ipe (hardwood) / 21.5 Built with individually mounted notes of aluminium, Ipe or GRP. Each of these materials gives a distinct sound when played. There are no wires or strings as the notes are individually and securely attached to the resonators for maximum vibration with incredible tones and resonance. The resonators are available in a number of different colours. GRP (fibreglass) The instrument is designed for ground installation, surface or wall mounted. Surface Fix Cadenza s are tuned to the C-Major pentatonic scale covering two octaves. 6 Duo Jumeau Aluminium / 43 Duo [n pl duos, dui] a. a pair of performers The Duo is a distinctive instrument with an ergonomic curved design. Accessible from both sides, this instrument can be enjoyed by up to four players. Tuned to the pentatonic scale, the left and right hand side are mirrored and the scale is C-major spanning 2 octaves from C4 to C The notes of the Duo have no wires or strings and are individually and securely attached to the resonators for maximum vibration with incredible tones and resonance. The Duo can be built with individual notes of aluminium, IPE or GRP. Each of these materials gives a distinct sound when played. The aluminium will produce a bright, clear tone when struck, IPE produces a strong, deep, resonant sound while GRP is fast and punchy. 7 Duo Cupla Aluminium - GRP The curvaceous design is not just about looking stylish. The wave makes it easier for individuals with limited range of movement, or players in wheelchairs, to reach all of the notes. Each player is slightly offset from each other, making it useful for players with special needs who may find direct eye contact difficult. 8 Sansa-Rimba Sansa regional term for the African mbira or thumb piano Rimba from Marimba; xylophone or hand piano of African origin. Aluminium Mysteria Bellatta Saxata Ipe (hardwood) 750 / 29.5 The Sansa-Rimba is a bright, stimulating and colourful teaching and music resource and would be a great addition as school playground equipment. This outdoor musical instrument is a clever blend of two African instruments; the Sansa (thumb-piano) and a Marimba (xylophone). Using the pentatonic scale and spanning two octaves (C4-C6), the 15 notes of the Sansa- Rimba are arranged as a traditional thumbpiano with the scale ascending from the centre outwards with chords arranged together on both sides. 10 Grand Marimba (Resonated) / 53 Our Grand Marimba is an outdoor musical instrument popular with Schools and Playground Designers alike. This is a substantial outdoor musical instrument that produces a strong, deep, resonant sound perfect as school playground equipment, for music therapy sessions and creative playgrounds. The notes used on the Grand Marimba are made of Ipe and are equipped with individual resonator tubes on the underside. The resonator reflects and projects the sound back to the player which gives a distinctive tone. No wires or strings, each note is individually and securely attached to the resonators for maximum vibration with incredible tones and resonance. In order to make the instrument accessible to all, the height, angle and space underneath of the instrument are such that a wheelchair user can enjoy playing the instrument comfortably. 11 Akadinda / 72 Akadinda: Inspired by a traditional Xylophone originating in Africa. The Akadinda is perfect for outdoor musical play. Large enough to accommodate up to four players, this resilient outdoor musical instrument is great fun to play and has big Ipe notes give a natural mellow sound The frame is made of treated timber which can be installed into the ground or surface mounted. 12 Marimba / 36.5 Marimba is the plural of rimba meaning xylophone or hand piano of African origin. This is a large outdoor Marimba which up to four people can play at once. The 15 large GRP notes are tuned to the pentatonic scale of C-major, and are supported by heavy duty stainless steel cable. The elegant stainless steel stands will look amazing anywhere, from a public park, school playground or a private garden area. Unsurpassed in their resonance, the chimes produce a deep low tone which you can feel as well as hear. The seven 100mm diameter aluminium chimes range from 1.2m to 1.8m tall and can be installed directly into the ground in any arrangement. Built with durable materials, designed to withstand tough environments, the centre post is strengthened and the outer tubes fixed using stainless steel security screws located top and bottom. 15 Emperor Chimes With the largest standing 2.5m in height, our Emperor Chimes really are large in sound and size. As a full set of 6 they offer a complete octave in C-Major Pentatonic or a standard set of 3 offers a primary C-Major Chord. Striking the chime just about anywhere along the tube produces a deep, resonant, powerful tone that you not only hear, but can feel as well. The harder you strike, the more it will vibrate, creating a louder sound with such resonance you can actually feel the vibration through your entire body. It is an amazing experience and you really do feel like you have been bathed in sound! 16 Bell Lyre / 28.5 Bell Tree - a percussion instrument, consisting of vertically nested inverted metal bowls placed on a vertical rod arranged in order of pitch. Lyre - A stringed instrument having two curved arms connected at the upper end by a crossbar, used to accompany a singer or reciter of poetry, especially in ancient Greece Our Bell Lyre is an outdoor instrument made of 8 graduated stainless steel bells presented within a beautiful contemporary stand reminiscent of a Lyre. The bells range in diameter from 100mm to 290mm and sing when struck with the attached beaters. Each bell emits its own sound with sweet, gentle tones from the bells at the top and deep, sonorous gong like sounds of the bottom bells. Elegant, with an irresistibly beautiful sound and breath-taking resonance, Harmony is perfect for melodic exploration Like a vertical metallophone, the 11 extra thick aluminium tubes are arranged lengthwise horizontally and supported by heavy-duty nylon coated galvanised steel cables. 19 Tembos / / 23 AEROPHONE : an aerophone is a musical instrument sounded by air. Examples of types of aerophones include pipe organs, accordions, flutes, horns, and the human voice; and our very own Tembos which are plosive aerophones. Both intriguing and addictive, our interactive Tembos allow you to make surprisingly funky music simply by striking them with the durable rubber paddles. The six stainless steel tubes are tuned to a C- major pentatonic scale, each generates a different tone with varying volumes depending on how hard you hit them - their audible strength is staggering! A stylish support structure holds the stainless steel tubes in a vertical orientation with the tallest standing over 2.5m in height, creating a truly visual and audibly stunning experience. 21 Rainbow Sambas This eye-catching set of five outdoor drums is a most popular outdoor musical instrument. 22 Congas Conga The Conga or more properly the tumbadora is a tall, narrow, single-headed African drum. We ve taken the traditional conga drum and added our own twist to bring drumming and music-making to the great outdoors. The Congas are a pair of single headed drums mounted onto a stainless steel post to be installed directly into the ground. 23 Babel Drum 505 / / 15.5 Fabricated from stainless steel our Babel Drum has been carefully tuned to replicate the sweet sound of steel pans. Played with the hands, preferably by striking with the fingertips, the 6-notes or 8 notes produce perfect musical tones typically associated with a tropical setting. Playing the Babel Drum is a wonderful unique hand drumming experience The Babel Drum is very easy to play. We recommend playing using the pads of your fingers, however you can also play with fingertips or the side of the thumb or a mix of all three. A quick tap onto the drums smooth surface and pulling away quickly like you ve touched something hot produces a beautiful melodic tone - do not leave the finger on the drum. Ground Fix The strike should be fast and soft at the same time and the hand should be open and loose. Where you strike of course makes a lot of difference too, with the larger tongues producing lower notes and smaller ones the higher notes. 28 Technical Information MATERIALS Anodised Aluminium All of our aluminium notes are anodised. Anodising is the process by which the natural film on aluminium is greatly increased in thickness. Anodising enhances the natural metallic lustre of aluminium while, if desired, applying durable and vibrant colour through an electrochemical process. The finish is ideally suited to exterior use, is very resistant to UV exposure and will not crack, peel or blister so often associated with painted finishes. Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) GRP is more commonly known as Fibre-glass. It is a modern composition of materials reinforced by fine fibres made of glass. It is very strong - seven times the flexural strength of steel - yet very lightweight. As GRP is extremely strong and robust it is ideal for harsh weather conditions. Recyclable and virtually maintenance free it is such a versatile and well-proven construction material that it can be used for many applications. Percussion Play uses this amazingly versatile material to make the notes for a number of our chimes and instruments. We have carefully selected the colour to resemble one of our favourite timbers Purple Heart. Purple heart is a hard wood from tropical South America and is a dull grey brown when freshly cut but soon oxidizes to a violet purple. Our GRP Purple Heart notes sound and look almost as good as the real thing but haven t travelled nearly as far! Ipe Hardwood Also called Brazilian walnut, ipe (pronounced ee-pay) wood is typically found in South America and some parts of Central America. It is one of the densest hardwoods available, with exceptional resistance to decay, rot, and insect attack. Three times harder than cedar, it has the same fire rating as concrete and steel, meaning it resists flames much longer than softer woods, and is so dense that it doesn't float in water. Ipe is extremely dense and durable. Security Fixings Where necessary, screws used in manufacturing our instruments are security screws that are stainless steel vandal resistant and virtually impossible to remove, without the special, matching screwdriver or screwdriver bit. Stainless Steel Frames All of our frames are made from Grade 316 stainless Steel for maximum durability. All of our stands are designed with extended legs for below ground installation. Alternatively at an extra cost a surface mounted version is available with bolt down base plates. Wall mounting your instrument can be a real space-saver and will add a little life to a dull wall. Further information on request. Beaters Where specified, instruments come complete with heavy-duty robust vandal resistant beaters. All our beaters are one-part cast polyurethane with integrally moulded cables, so there are no nuts or screws that can be loosened. We re pretty confident in saying our beaters are the strongest on the market. 28
