Playlist Sept. 6 th AM The Beatles - Because - Abbey Road Lead vocal: John, Paul and George The group recorded 23 takes on August 1, 1969, with George Martin on a Baldwin spinet electric harpsichord matching note with John on his Epiphone Casino electric guitar and Paul on his Rickenbacker bass guitar. For the backing track Ringo kept the beat gently tapping out a beat on the hi-hat. This was for the musician s headphones and was not recorded on the tape. Take 16 was deemed the best backing track and John, Paul, and George added their lush harmonies to it. On August 4, the three recorded their vocals two more times, adding to the already thick layers of harmony. Lennon was inspired the write the song when he hear Yoko playing Beethoven s piano sonata in C Sharp minor, opus 27 number two (aka The Moonlight Sonata ). He asked her to play the chords backwards and wrote Because around that reversed chord sequence. The gorgeous three-part harmonies of Because are showcased on an a cappella mix of the song on the Anthology 3 album.

John Lennon Oh My Love (Lennon/Ono) Imagine 71 Also known as Oh My Lover, this is the only (Lennon/Ono) composition on the album. Lennon 1.00 The Beatles - If I Fell - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: John and Paul John Lennon s stunning ballad If I Fell was by far the most complex song he had written to date. It could be considered a progression from This Boy with its similar chord structure and intricate harmonies by John and Paul, recorded at their request together on one microphone. 4 Something New - Capitol LP BREAK HERE Some mellow, easy listening John Lennon to ease us into our Labor Day weekend.how about we follow that with something completely different how about some Rockin Paul McCartney to wake ya up here s Paul.. and his Beatles. Long Tall Sally (Johnson-Penniman-Blackwell) Lead vocal: Paul Paul McCartney recorded this Little Richard screecher in just one take on March 1, Prior to being properly recorded, the Beatles performed the song for an American audience during the Beatles first concert appearance, in Washington D.C. on February 11, In a rare instance, two of the songs from the Long Tall Sally EP were issued

first in America ( Long Tall Sally on The Beatles Second Album and I Call Your Name on Something New ). The initial pressings of the Long Tall Sally EP credited only Enotris Johnson as the writer of Long Tall Sally. Johnson was a little girl that had written some original lyrics for a song she hoped Little Richard would record. She gave a popular local radio disc jockey a note with the lyrics to give to Little Richard. The DJ gave the note to Little Richard s producer and a hit was born. The Penniman that is credited is Richard Penniman, aka Little Richard. Little Richard s recording was released in March 1956 and hit #1 on the Billboard R&B sales chart, becoming the best-selling 45 of the history of Specialty Records. Originally recorded by Little Richard with the working title The Thing. On U.S. album: The Beatles Second Album - Capitol LP The Beatles - I m Down - Single Lead vocal: Paul Recorded in one take on June 14, Written entirely by Paul McCartney, who showed off his skills at the June 14 recording session by recording I ve Just Seen A Face in six takes, then the scorcher I m Down in one take, and following a dinner break, nailing Yesterday in two takes. I m Down was patterned after Little Richard s Long Tall Sally, or as George Harrison described it at the time, It s pretty wild because it has Paul s wild voice. Paul: I could do Little Richard's voice, which is a wild, hoarse, screaming thing. It's like an out-of-body experience. You have to leave your current sensibilities and go about a foot above your head to sing it. A lot of people were fans of Little Richard so I used to sing his stuff but there came a point when I wanted one of my own, so I wrote I'm Down. I ended up doing it at Shea Stadium. It worked very well for those kind of places, it was a good stage song. And in as much as they are hard to write, I'm proud of it. Those kind of songs with hardly any melody, rock 'n' roll songs, are much harder to write than ballads, because there's nothing to them. John Lennon plays the Hammond organ. 6 Paul McCartney Run Devil Run Run Devil Run 99 Paul: I saw this herbal medicine shop in Atlanta selling Run Devil Run products. I thought it was a great Rock and Roll title, so I did it Chuck Berry Style! The Beatles - Oh! Darling - Abbey Road Lead vocal: Paul Paul s Oh! Darling had been run-through a few times during the Get Back sessions, but the first proper recording was at Abbey Road Studios on April 20, The backing track was recorded in 26 takes with Paul on Rickenbacker bass, John on piano, George on Telecaster through a Leslie speaker and Ringo on drums. Paul s lead vocal was recorded on April 26, but he was not happy with it. The band moved on to other songs. Paul would return to Oh! Darling in mid-july. He wanted to record his lead vocal in one single take when his voice was most gravelly. Engineer Alan Parsons: Perhaps my main memory of the Abbey Road sessions is of Paul coming into Studio Three at two o clock or 2:30 each afternoon, on his own, to do the vocal on Oh! Darling. That was a feature of the Abbey Road sessions. You rarely saw all four Beatles together. It was either John or Paul or George working on their various things, perhaps only getting together to her something back. But Paul came in several days running to do the lead vocal on Oh! Darling. He d come in, sing it and say, No, that s not it, I ll try it again tomorrow. He only tried it once per day, I suppose he wanted to capture a certain rawness which could only be done once before his voice changed. I remember him saying five years ago I could have done this in a flash, referring, I suppose, to the days of Long Tall Sally and Kansas City. McCartney made lead vocal attempts on July 17, 18, 22, and 23, and his July 23 lead vocal appears on the finished master. On August 8, Paul overdubbed lead guitar and tambourine. Paul, John and George added backing vocals on August 11. The Beatles - I m Looking Through You - Rubber Soul Lead vocal: Paul Written by Paul after an argument with then-girlfriend, actress Jane Asher. Initially recorded on October 24, 1965, the song was re-recorded from scratch on November 6, but McCartney was still not satisfied. Four days later, on November 10, the group took another stab at it. Paul s lead vocal was superimposed the next day. The version issued by Capitol Records has two false starts. On U.S. album: Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - Old Brown Shoe - Non-LP B-Side (Harrison) Lead vocal: George On February 25, 1969, his 26 th birthday, George Harrison went to Abbey Road Studios and recorded elaborate eight-track demos of three of his latest compositions: Old Brown Shoe, Something, and All Things Must Pass. All three of the demos recorded

this day can be found on the Anthology 3 album. Old Brown Shoe had made a brief appearance near the end of the Get Back sessions with a few run-through/rehearsals on January 28, The full band revisited the song for a proper recording on April 16, The rhythm track was finished in four takes, with George on lead guitar, Paul on jangle piano, John on rhythm guitar (which would be erased in favor of a Hammond organ part played by George on April 18), and Ringo on drums. Overdubs included bass guitar, lead guitar, and backing vocals by John and Paul. In his book, I Me Mine, George said, I started the chord sequences on piano, which I don t really play, and then began writing ideas for the words from various opposites Again, it s the duality of things - yes no, up down, left right, right wrong, etc. Released as the flip side of The Ballad Of John And Yoko in the UK on May 30, 1969, while the Get Back single was topping the charts. 10 How about another song from our featured album of the day J L s Imagine out this week in USA 1971 This nest song Crippled Inside aimed at Paul McCartney not quite as biting as How Do You Sleep supposedly written after hearing the song 3 Legs on Paul s RAM album which we might have play next to give yoa context.here s John and George on Dobro 1/2 the Beatles singing about a Beatle! Right here on BWTB FEATURED ALBUM OF THE DAY John Lennon Crippled Inside Imagine 71 Based on the 1920 s Blind Blake song, Black Dog Blues. Lyrically, it s a very nasty swipe at Paul McCartney. This is just one of the songs John pointed at Paul after McCartney s Ram was released. Paul & Linda McCartney 3 Legs Ram 71 Although not intended, George and Ringo thought the song was directed at the three other Beatles, which proved a dog can run on 3 legs, but not very well. George Harrison Wah-Wah - All Things Must Pass 70 Famously composed during the Let It Be sessions. On January 10 th, 1969 George left the Beatles and wrote the song during this period of estrangement. The title refers to the wah-wah (headache) he was receiving due to prolonged exposure to Macca-baiting and John and Yoko s antics during the Twickenham rehearsals. The song obviously had some meaning to George, as he used it to open his section of the Concert for Bangladesh. Ringo Early 1970 Flip It s Don t Come Easy 9.57 BREAK

Tell Me Why was written primarily by John and was his attempt to mimic the New York girl group sound The Beatles were so fond of. On U.S. album: A Hard Day s Night - United Artists LP Something New - Capitol LP The Beatles - I Should Have Known Better - A Hard Day s Night

Lead vocal: John Following their triumphant visit to America The Beatles were thrust back to work. On February 25, 1964 they dove into new songs slated for their film. On this day they recorded You Can t Do That and began work on Paul s And I Love Her and John s I Should Have Known Better. In the film I Should Have Known Better was performed in the train compartment scene, which in reality was the interior of a van with crew members rocking the van to fake the train in motion. Used as the flip side of the U.S. A Hard Day s Night single. Paul s Things We Said Today was the UK b-side. Recorded Feb , On U.S. album: A Hard Day s Night - United Artists LP Hey Jude - Apple LP (1970) The Beatles - Run For Your Life - Rubber Soul sessions Lead vocal: John The first song completed when sessions for Rubber Soul began on October 12, John Lennon lifted the opening line ( I d rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man ) from Baby Let s Play House, popularized by Elvis Presley. On U.S. album: Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - Getting Better - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band Lead vocal: Paul

The title Getting Better was inspired by a phrase often used by substitute Beatles drummer Jimmy Nicol. Nicol stepped in for the ailing Ringo Starr during his bout with tonsillitis in June On the eve of the band embarking on their first world tour Ringo collapsed at a photo shoot and the final night of recording for the A Hard Day s Night LP were scrapped, leaving the final version with 13 songs instead of the expected 14. Nicol was called in on no notice to rehearse the concert set list. The next day he was thrown into the crush of full scale Beatlemania as the Fab Four landed in the Netherlands for the first of the sold out concerts. Once on the mend, Ringo caught up with the tour in Australia. After each show, John and Paul would ask their new drummer how he was doing. His standard reply was It s getting better. McCartney was reminded of this phrase while walking with Beatles biographer Hunter Davies during the making of the Sgt. Pepper album, and he decided to build a song around it. Recording began on the song on March 9, 1967 and the basic rhythm track was completed in seven takes. Paul described the tune as an optimistic song, but noted John s biting wit gave the lyrics the perfect counterpoint. Paul: I was sitting there doing Getting better all the time and John just said in his laconic way, It couldn t get no worse, and I thought, Oh, brilliant! This is exactly why I love writing with John. Recording continued on the track on March 21. The March 21 session is notable in Beatles history. John informed producer George Martin that he was feeling ill. It was a rarity for John Lennon to complain of illness or to miss a recording session due to illness. Martin thought he could do with some fresh air and took him to the rook of the Abbey Road studios and left him there to convalesce. Paul and George knew John had taken a tab of acid. Realizing that John was alone on a roof with no rails and in the middle of an LSD trip, the pair ran up the roof to bring him back inside. On March 23, Paul s lead vocal, John and George s backing vocals and handclaps were double-tracked and added to the mix. NEWS W/ JACKIE BREAK

The Beatles - Back In The U.S.S.R. - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul Written while in India, Paul s Back In The U.S.S.R. is based on Chuck Berry s 1959 hit Back In The U.S.A., but was written to mimic the classic sound of the Beach Boys. Beach Boys lead singer Mike Love was on the Transcendental Meditation sojourn in India with the Beatles in the spring of 1968 and as McCartney was working on his new song, Love suggested the lyrics about Ukraine and Moscow girls, similar to his lyrics in California Girls. Recording began on August 22, 1968, and it was during this session that Ringo Starr officially quit the band. His departure was blamed on a disagreement with Paul over his drumming. Ringo flew to the Mediterranean to spend time on actor Peter Sellers yacht. It was there that he wrote Octopus s Garden. On September 3, Ringo returned to the studio to find his drum kit smothered in flowers. Ringo: I felt tired and discouraged took a week s holiday, and when I came back to work everything was all right again. But Ringo added, Paul is the greatest bass guitar player in the world. But he is also very determined; he goes on and on to see if he can get his own way. While that may be a virtue, it did mean that musical disagreements inevitably arose from time to time. / The Beatles - Dear Prudence - The Beatles Lead vocal: John

Recorded at Trident Studios eight-track recording facilities on August 28, 29, and 30, Ringo Starr had quit the band temporarily and the three remaining Beatles moved forward with sessions for the new album. John Lennon s Dear Prudence features Paul McCartney on drums. The guitar picking which opens and runs through the song is supplied by John on his Epiphone Casino. The finger-picking style was taught to him by folk singer Donovan earlier in the year while they were in India. George Harrison plays his Gibson Les Paul guitar and overdubbed a distorted Fender Telecaster lead guitar part. In addition to his drumming, Paul plays his Rickenbacker bass guitar, provides the piano track and a very short burst of flugelhorn. John wrote the song in Rishikesh, India, for Prudence Farrow, sister of the actress Mia Farrow, who had cordoned herself off in a hut to meditate for hours on end. Lennon s song was a plea for her to take a break from her excessive meditation and join the others on the trip. 16 FEATURED ALBUM OF THE DAY John Lennon It s So Hard Imagine 71 This was the first song recorded in the new studio at Tittenhurst. The song has a very basic blues backing track. WINNER HERE Some more brass? The Beatles - Got To Get You Into My Life - Revolver Lead vocal: Paul Another Paul McCartney solo composition, Paul called this stand out track an ode to pot, like someone else might write an ode to chocolate or a good claret (wine). Work began on the song on April 7, 1966, and this early alternate version can be heard on the Anthology 2 album. It was the second song recorded for the Revolver album. The Beatles returned to the song the next day with an improved arrangement that included John and George on fuzz guitars. On May 18 they revisited the song again, devoting a full 12-hour session to rework and complete the song. To give the song its Motown feel, five outside musicians were brought in to add brass and saxophones. An additional dual

guitar overdub was added on June 17. Got To Get You Into My Life was the opening song performed on the final Wings tour in On U.S. album: Revolver - Capitol LP The Beatles - Savoy Truffle - The Beatles (Harrison) Lead vocal: George George took his inspiration for his fourth song on the White Album from a box of chocolates, specifically a Mackintosh s Good News double centre chocolate assortment box, said by George to be Eric Clapton s favorite brand. Most of the candies mentioned by George in the song came from the specific candies found in the box. Confections such as Creme Tangerine, Montelimart, Ginger Sling, Coffee Dessert and Savoy Truffle were part of the assortment. Cool Cherry Cream and Coconut Fudge were Harrison creations. When George sings But you ll have to have them all pulled out after the Savoy Truffle, it is a warning to his friend Eric Clapton that he will have to have his decaying teeth pulled out. After some rehearsal, the backing track was recorded in one take on October 3, 1968, at Trident Studios. With George playing electric piano, Paul on Rickenbacker bass, and Ringo on drums. Harrison s lead vocal was recorded at Trident Studios on October 5. Chris Thomas score for saxophones (distorted at Harrison s request) was recorded at Abbey Road on October 11. The final overdubs for Savoy Truffle on October 14 were also the last instruments recorded during the White Album sessions: organ, tambourine, bongos, and George playing a lead guitar part on his Fender Telecaster. This is the third of four Harrison songs on the White Album that John Lennon does not appear on. The Beatles - Lady Madonna - Non-LP Track

Lead vocal: Paul The Beatles seventeenth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. The last original issue Beatles 45 to appear on the Capitol swirl label in the U.S. or on the Parlophone label in the UK. Starting in the summer of 1968, Beatles recordings would be issued on their own record label, Apple Records. The Beatles did not leave EMI or Capitol, they simply had their own custom label, to which they could sign artists. The manufacturing and distribution would remain the same as before. In fact, in America, their releases continued to use Capitol album and single catalog numbering. BREAK/.Time for Ringo horns? Yes? 19 *Might be nice if we played the title track from our FEATURED ALBUM OF THE DAY NEEDSTO PICK IT UP A BIT John Lennon Imagine Imagine 71 John s most famous anthem, and one of the most memorable songs of all time, this was to be considered John s Yesterday. It was inspired by Yoko s poem Cloud Piece from It continues to have massive radio play to this very day and was infamously censored (and retracted) by Clear Channel following the 9/11 attacks. This was John s dream no religion, no wars, no possessions his utopian ideal. The Beatles Let It Be - Let It Be NAKED Paul wrote "Let It Be" in response to the constant fighting amongst band members, esp. over finances. Paul was trying to emerge as the new 'leader' of the band, since John was often absent from sessions. The other members grew tired of his poking and prodding and soon turned on him. 'Mother Mary' who gives Paul strength is actually his mother, who came to him in a dream and lifted his spirits. McCartney 1.00 Original take, de-spectorised and without the re-recorded guitar solo by George. George Harrison The Light That Has Lighted The World - Living In The Material World 73 George began composing this track while working with Cilla Black on When Every Song Is Sung, which features a similar lack of tempo. How about something NEW???

Vocals: Paul McCartney, Alice Cooper Guitars: Joe Perry, Johnny Depp Piano: Paul McCartney Drums: Abe Laboriel Jr. Bass: Paul McCartney Background Vocals: Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, Abe Laboriel Jr., Bob Ezrin Hollywood Vampires Come & Get It The Beatles - Come Together - Abbey Road Lead vocal: John The Beatles twenty-first single release for EMI, and fourth on the Apple Records label. When John and Yoko were in Montreal staging their second and last Bed-In For Peace they were visited by Timothy Leary, an outspoken proponent of LSD. During their visit, Leary and his wife participated in John and Yoko s hotel room recording of Give Peace A Chance, singing on the chorus. Timothy is even name-checked in the lyrics. He asked John to write a song titled Come Together Join The Party for his bid to become governor of California. Lennon obliged and responded with lyrics such as: Come together right now/don t come tomorrow, don t come alone/come together right now over me. Lennon recorded a demo for Leary, who started using it as his campaign song. After being imprisoned for possession of marijuana in late 1969, Leary dropped

out of the gubernatorial race, which was won by Ronald Reagan. Lennon reworked and expanded the song for the Beatles. The Beatles - A Hard Day s Night - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: John with Paul The Beatles seventh single release for EMI s Parlophone label. The title is a Ringoism, coined by the drummer sometime in 1963 and used by John in his book In His Own Write. With the film nearly completed the last bit of business was to give the film a name. The project was being filmed with the working title Beatlemania. On April 13, 1964 The Beatles met with key personnel from the studio and bounced title ideas. It was felt they d find no better suggestion than Ringo s offhand remark it s been a hard day s night and John volunteered to write the title song that evening. The next morning he brought the song in and taught it to Paul. Paul cleaned up the middle section and the two played it for producer Walter Shenson. Two days later The Beatles would formally record the song. It was a rarity for an outsider to be allowed in the studio or control booth while The Beatles rehearsed and recorded. An exception was made for the director of the A Hard Day s Night film, Richard Lester. Lester was in the control booth and offered many suggestions during the morning while this key song was worked out, much to the dismay of producer George Martin. It was Lester s suggestion that the song open dramatically (as it would open the film), and fade out at the end in a cinematic way. He got his wish. George s striking a G suspended 4th chord on his 12-string Rickenbacker make this record instantly recognizable in its opening two seconds. Released as a single in the UK on July 10, 1964, it went straight to #1. 22 John Lennon Give Me Some Truth Imagine 71 This was also composed in the Spring of 68 in India. It was also rehearsed during the Get Back sessions. The song had contemporary lyrical additions, in reference to Tricky Dicky (Richard Nixon) and a desire for such people to give John the truth. The Beatles - I ve Got A Feeling - Let It Be Lead vocal: Paul and John In compiling the soundtrack to the Let It Be film, producer Phil Spector had no time to sift through the hours of music the Beatles had recorded at the end of January Instead, he relied on two versions mixed by Glyn Johns. He also screened a print of the movie. Spector had four different Glyn Johns mixes of I ve Got A Feeling to consider: an incomplete January 22 run-through, a more polished take recorded on January 27, and two performances of the song from the rooftop concert on January 30, On March 23, 1970, Spector remixed the January 27 take and the first of the rooftop performances, but when banding the final album, he chose the first rooftop performance for inclusion.

The Beatles - One After Let It Be Lead vocal: John and Paul One of the oldest songs in the Lennon-McCartney catalog, One After 909 had been written by John when he was 17 or 18, and had been performed by the Quarrymen in 1960, and by the Beatles in their pre-fame club days. The song was first recorded by the Beatles at the March 5, 1963, session for their third EMI single. After completing both sides of the new single ( From Me To You and Thank You Girl ), John and Paul had two additional songs they wanted the group to record. In addition to One After 909 they also brought in What Goes On, but there was only enough time in the session to record one additional song, so One After 909 got the go-ahead. Six years later the group revisited the song, with Billy Preston on keyboards. In his 1980 Playboy interview, Lennon admitted the song was probably resurrected for Let It Be because of a lack of material. As the rooftop performance drew to a close John sang an impromptu line from Danny Boy. The previously unreleased 1963 version can be found on the Anthology 1 album.

The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise) - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band Lead vocals: John, Paul, George, Ringo The Beatles had promised EMI that they have the master tape of the Sgt. Pepper album delivered no later than April 12, Paul McCartney had made arrangements to travel to America between April 3 and April 12, so this session on April 1 would be his last chance to add vocals or instruments to the project. Only George Harrison s contribution to the album ( Within You, Without You ) remained to be recorded, and that was being performed without John, Paul or Ringo. George Martin credits Neil Aspinall with the idea of reprising the title track on the second side of the record. For the reprise of the title song the Beatles convened in Abbey Road s studio one, a cavernous space usually reserved for orchestral recordings. George Martin felt this room enhanced the live feeling of the song, giving it an electrifying, football stadium atmosphere. According to author Mark Lewisohn, all four Beatles chanted out the quickpaced vocals. Mono mix includes the audience sounds beginning more sharply, the drum intro is four beats longer, and there are some words spoken by John as well as some audience laughter, all of which are missing from the stereo mix. Paul ad-libs some lyrics at the end, but it can barely be heard on the stereo version. The Beatles - A Day In The Life - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band

Lead vocals: John and Paul Work began on January 19, 1967, for what is quite possibly the finest Lennon- McCartney collaboration of their songwriting career. On this evening, following some rehearsal, Lennon rolled tentatively through four takes, drawing a road map for the other Beatles and George Martin to follow. Lennon on vocals and Jumbo acoustic guitar, McCartney on piano, Harrison on maracas and Starr on congas. Sections were incomplete and to hold their space Mal Evans stood by a microphone and counted from one to 24, marking the time. To cue the end of the middle eight overdub section an alarm clock was sounded. There was no Paul McCartney vocal yet, merely instruments at this point where his contribution would be placed. On January 20, Paul added his section, which he would re-recorded on February 3. Lennon told Beatles biographer Hunter Davies that the first verse was inspired by a story in the January 17, 1967, edition of the Daily Mail about the car accident that killed Guinness heir Tara Browne. John: I didn t copy the accident. Tara didn t blow his mind out, but it was in my mind when I was writing that verse. The second verse was inspired by Lennon s work on Richard Lester s film How I Won The War. According to Paul, the third verse came from a Daily Mail article published on January 7, 1967, about 4,000 potholes in the streets of Blackburn, Lancashire. Paul s tune ( Woke up, fell out of bed ) was an entirely separate song fragment that he and John wanted to link to John s verses. Coincidently, Paul s bit was dropped in after the temporary alarm clock sound, so the alarm clock sound stayed in the final mix. George Martin said it was Paul s idea to create a spiraling ascent of sound for the two 24-bar segments that followed the lyric I d love to turn you on. Paul had wanted a full symphony orchestra, but Martin balked at what it would cost to bring in 90 musicians. He compromised with Paul and brought in half a symphony orchestra. The final chord was originally to be a chord of people singing. But after four takes and several overdubs the idea was scrapped in favor of playing a single piano note (E major, to be precise). The task went to John, Paul & Ringo, and Mal Evans spread across three pianos. Read back thank you under music still remaining close w/ Mary? Or Imagine song from Imagine CD
