2 9AM The Beatles - All My Loving With The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul Essentially a Paul McCartney solo composition. The first song performed on the live broadcast of The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964, and watched by a thenrecord 72 million viewers. McCartney has said it was the first song he ever wrote where he had the words before the music. Recorded in 13 takes on July 30, All My Loving is the most commercial Lennon-McCartney song recorded by The Beatles in 1963 that was not released as a single in the UK or U.S. Meet The Beatles! - Capitol LP The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour - Magical Mystery Tour (EP) Lead vocals: Paul and John When Paul McCartney was in the U.S. in early April 1967 he came up with the idea for a Beatles television film about a mystery tour on a bus. During the April 11 flight back home he began writing lyrics for the title song and sketching out some ideas for the film. Upon his arrival in London, Paul pitched his idea to Brian Epstein who happily approved. Paul then met with John to go over the details and the two began work on the film s title track. The title track was written primarily by Paul but was not finished when McCartney brought the song in to be recorded on April 25, John helped with the missing pieces during the session.

4 The Beatles - I Don t Want To Spoil The Party - Beatles For Sale and Paul Written primarily by John, who called it one of his favorites /LEADS US TO A QUIZ.#1 Recorded in 19 takes (only five of which were complete run-throughs) on September 29, The B-side of the Eight Days A Week single in the U.S., issued February 15, Beatles VI - Capitol LP Beatles - Girl - Rubber Soul Written primarily by John, the song was completed in two takes on November 11, The song is notable for the naughty backing vocal (Paul and George repeating the word tit ) and John s heavy breathing during his vocal. John called this one of his best. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - Rain - Non-LP B-side Recorded on April 14 and 16, The track is notable for the backwards vocal from John Lennon at the end of the song. The section is John singing part of the first verse but the tape is superimposed backwards in the mix. The song contains slowed down

5 instruments, guitar distortion, and vocals recorded and played back at variable speed. Aside from Paul McCartney s dominant bass part, the song features a striking drum performance from Ringo, who has called Rain his favorite Beatles song. The B-side of Paperback Writer. Issued in America on May 23, 1966 and the UK on June 10, 1966, several months in advance of the Revolver album. Hey Jude - Capitol LP (1970) The Beatles - Happiness Is A Warm Gun - The Beatles John Lennon s Happiness Is A Warm Gun was actually three different, and unfinished, song segments he had strung together to form one finished song. Recording started on September 23, 1968, and the takes numbered into the dozens, an unusual practice for the Beatles. But the three song sections were not alike and had different tempos so it made for difficult transitions. On the first day, 45 takes were attempted. The next day, 25 more attempts to perfect the rhythm track were made. The three distinct parts of the

6 finished song are I Need A Fix, Mother Superior Jumped The Gun, and Happiness Is A Warm Gun. The instrumental line-up was the same both days, with John on Epiphone Casino electric guitar, George on Fender Telecaster, Paul on Rickenbacker bass and Ringo on drums. Ultimately, it was decided that take 53 up to 1:34 was the best of the first two parts of the song and take 65 was the best version of the third part, so those two best takes were edited together to create the best overall take of the complete song and overdubbing began. Specifically, John s lead vocal (triple-tracked in some places), the happiness, bang bang, shoot shoot backing vocals from John, Paul and George, organ, piano, snare drum beat, additional bass, and tambourine. The working title was Happiness Is A Warm Gun In Your Hand, and that wording was taken directly from text on the cover of an American gun magazine George Martin had shown to John. That phrase was a take-off of the then-hugely popular Peanuts comic strip by Charles Schulz, who used the line Happiness is a warm puppy. John considered Happiness Is A Warm Gun one of his best songs. Paul and George reportedly said the track was their favorite on the new album. Some favorites by the Beatles themselves.and they were all John Lennon songs. QUIZ.#1 In 1980 John Lennon said this about a song from the Revolver album written by Paul McCartney "it s one of my favorites of his - a nice piece of work." Name the song.john is referring to A Paul song from the Revolver album raise yer hand if u know Followed by more favorites of the Beatles themselves

7 The Beatles - For No One - Revolver Lead vocal: Paul Written entirely by Paul in March 1966 while on vacation with then-girlfriend Jane Asher at the Swiss ski resort of Klosters. The backing track was recorded in 10 takes on May 9, 1966 with only Paul (piano) and Ringo (drums) present. John and George do not perform on this song. Overdubs included Paul on clavichord, and Ringo on cymbals and maracas. Paul s lead vocal was recorded on May 16. The baroque-style French horn solo was credited to Alan Civil and recorded on May 19. Ringo s original drum part was removed from the track in the reduction mixdown. The song was originally called Why Did It Die? Paul: I was in Switzerland on my first skiing holiday. I'd done a bit of skiing in Help! and quite liked it, so I went back and ended up in a little bathroom in a Swiss chalet writing For No One. I remember the descending bass line trick that it's based on, and I remember the character in the song - the girl putting on her make-up. Revolver - Capitol LP The Beatles - Something - Abbey Road (Harrison) Lead vocal: George The Beatles twenty-first single release for EMI, and fourth on the Apple Records label.

8 Although initially crediting Lennon and McCartney as the songwriters, legendary crooner Frank Sinatra called George Harrison s Something the greatest love song ever written. Commonly referred to as George s first Beatles A-side, some sales chart makers at the time considered the single a double-a, as both sides of the record received significant radio airplay, and charted both Something and its flip side (John s Come Together ) as one combined chart listing. The song is the first of two CLASSIC songs George delivered for the Abbey Road album, the other being Here Comes The Sun. It was a phenomenal one-two punch that had to have Lennon and McCartney wondering what else Harrison had up his sleeve. The Beatles - Here, There And Everywhere - Revolver Lead vocal: Paul Written by Paul while sitting by the pool of John s estate, this classic ballad was inspired by The Beach Boys God Only Knows. Completed in 14 takes spread over three sessions on June 14, 16 and 17, Paul s lead vocal is double tracked. Paul, John, and George provide the lush harmony and Ringo drums using brushes. Both Paul and John called Here, There And Everywhere one of their favorite Beatles songs. Never performed by The Beatles in concert and only rarely performed by McCartney since. Revolver - Capitol LP

9 The Beatles - You Know My Name (Look Up The Number) flip of Let It Be Recorded: 17 May, 7/8 June 1967, 30 April 1969 Paul has named "You Know My Name" his favorite Beatles track due to its irregularity. The song was recorded over a two-year span, being worked on and shelved several times between 1967 and John came up with the lyric and title after seeing a postal advertisement reading, "You have their name? Look up their number." The karaoke segment was developed during the second sessions for the song, and a reference to 'A Hard Day's Night' associate producer Dennis O'Dell was added, prompting numerous calls to his home by crazed fans who chanted mindlessly "We have your name and now we've got your number", as well as drugged fans coming en masse to his doorstep wanting to live with him. Top favorite songs by the Beatles themselves! 9.42 BREAK The Beatles - Think For Yourself - Rubber Soul (Harrison) Lead vocal: George The fifth original composition by George Harrison to be recorded by The Beatles was completed on November 8, 1965 in one take with overdubs under the working title Won t Be There With You. The song features Paul playing his bass through a fuzz box to give it a distorted sound. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - Any Time At All - A Hard Day s Night

Recorded June 2, 1964, the last day of recording for the A Hard Day s Night album. John Lennon: An effort at writing It Won't Be Long - same ilk. C to A minor, C to A minor with me shouting. The song was in an unfinished state when Lennon brought it to the band to record on June 2. The group worked out the arrangement throughout the day and night. Up against the wall on a deadline to submit the album, the piano section in the middle eight was left without lyrics. They had run out of time. On April 8, 1988, Lennon's handwritten lyrics for Any Time At All were sold for 6,000 at an auction held at Sotheby's in London. Something New - Capitol LP 10

The Beatles - Eight Days A Week - Beatles For Sale Recorded primarily on October 6, It is the first instance of the Beatles taking an unfinished idea into the studio and experimenting with different approaches to a song. Eight Days A Week is the first pop song with a fade-in introduction. Written mostly by Paul, the title was taken from a line spoken by a limo driver. McCartney: I was being 11

12 driven over to visit John. The chauffeur was talking away to me, saying how hard his boss worked the staff, so hard that they seem to do eight days a week. We ve altered the plot a bit for the song, of course. The bloke loves the girl eight days a week. In later years John Lennon incorrectly referred to this title in interviews as the original working title for the film Help! The actual working title of Help! was Eight Arms To Hold You. On September 20, 1964 as the band and their entourage flew to their final North American Tour concert destination, the press corps on board the Beatles private plane witnessed from a distance, careful not to interrupt, the four Beatles huddled together working on a new song. John, Paul, and George on guitars and Ringo tapping his knees, and all humming the tune of what would become Eight Days A Week. Released as a single b/w I Don t Want To Spoil The Party in the U.S. on February 15, Beatles VI - Capitol LP The Beatles - When I Get Home - A Hard Day s Night Recorded in 11 takes on June 2, It was the next to last song completed for the A Hard Day s Night album. In his 1980 interview with Playboy magazine John Lennon said: That s me trying to get that Wilson Pickett type sound, a four-in-the bar cowbell song. 14 The Beatles - I m A Loser - Beatles For Sale Recorded in eight takes on August 14, Written mostly by John Lennon. The song style, more autobiographical and introspective than the yeah, yeah, yeah pop the group had previously recorded, was heavily influenced by the work of Bob Dylan. Paul McCartney called it a folk song gone pop. The Beatles debuted I m A Loser on ABC s Shindig program, an appearance taped in London and airing on October 7. The song was performed during the Beatles European Tour commencing June 20, 1965, but was not on the set list for the U.S. shows two months later. John s harmonica solo was a last 14

15 minute addition to the song, appearing first in Take 6. George Martin and the group considered I m A Loser a potential single and had initially chosen it to be the LP s opening song. Beatles 65 - Capitol LP George Harrison I Live For You - All Things Must Pass 70 (Remaster 2001) A pleasant track in the vein of Behind That Locked Door, and bears a striking resemblance to Dylan s Lay Lady Lay. The Beatles - Oh! Darling - Abbey Road Lead vocal: Paul Paul s Oh! Darling had been run-through a few times during the Get Back sessions, but the first proper recording was at Abbey Road Studios on April 20, The backing track was recorded in 26 takes with Paul on Rickenbacker bass, John on piano, George on Telecaster through a Leslie speaker and Ringo on drums. Paul s lead vocal was recorded on April 26, but he was not happy with it. The band moved on to other songs. Paul would return to Oh! Darling in mid-july. He wanted to record his lead vocal in one single take when his voice was most gravelly. Engineer Alan Parsons: Perhaps my main memory of the Abbey Road sessions is of Paul coming into Studio Three at two o clock or 2:30 each afternoon, on his own, to do the vocal on Oh! Darling. That was a feature of the Abbey Road sessions. You rarely saw all four Beatles together. It was either John or Paul or George working on their various things, perhaps only getting together to her something back. But Paul came in several days running to do the lead vocal on Oh! Darling. He d come in, sing it and say, No, that s not it, I ll try it again tomorrow. He only tried it once per day, I suppose he wanted to capture a certain rawness which could only be done once before his voice changed. I remember him saying five years

16 ago I could have done this in a flash, referring, I suppose, to the days of Long Tall Sally and Kansas City. McCartney made lead vocal attempts on July 17, 18, 22, and 23, and his July 23 lead vocal appears on the finished master. On August 8, Paul overdubbed lead guitar and tambourine. Paul, John and George added backing vocals on August 11. Stand By Me/Move Over Ms. L (single) (John Lennon) May 3 rd, 1975 John Lennon Stand By Me See above. John Lennon Move Over Ms. L Originally, this track was to be recorded by Keith Moon, for his 1974, Two Sides Of The Moon. This never occurred, and John has an inspired recording of his own. The Beatles - I ll Cry Instead - A Hard Day s Night A country-influenced Lennon-McCartney rocker recorded on June 1, John Lennon says that he wrote it for A Hard Day s Night, but the film s director, Richard Lester, didn t like it and replaced it at the last minute with Can t Buy Me Love. The decision to cut I ll Cry Instead from the film was so last minute that the American soundtrack LP, which had been rush-released by United Artists Records, included I ll Cry Instead in its song line-up. Released as a single in the U.S. on July 20, A Hard Day s Night - United Artists LP

Magical Mystery Tour - Capitol LP The Beatles - Glass Onion - The Beatles In 1980 John described Glass Onion as one of his throwaways, but the word play in the song is fascinating. Aside from many references to other Beatles songs, listeners were probably left guessing what Lennon meant by phrases such as bent backed tulips, cast iron shore, and dovetail joint. Specifically the phrase looking through the bent backed tulips to see how the other half lives referred to a floral arrangement on display at the posh London restaurant Parkes. The Cast Iron Shore is a name for Liverpool s beach, and a dovetail joint is not a drug reference, but a type of construction wood joint. The title Glass Onion is British slang for monocle (or eye piece), and was one of the names suggested by John for the Iveys, an Apple band that changed its name to Badfinger. The Beatles - In My Life - Rubber Soul Lead vocals: John with Paul Recorded October 18, 1965 and written primarily by John, who called it his first real major piece of work. Of all the Lennon-McCartney collaborations only two songs have really been disputed by John and Paul themselves -- Eleanor Rigby and In My Life. Both agree that the lyrics are 100% Lennon, but John says Paul helped on the musical bridge, while Paul recalls writing the entire melody on John s Mellotron. The gorgeous piano solo is provided by George Martin. To give his solo a harpsichord sound the producer played the piano at half speed and an octave lower so that when played at regular speed it would be in the correct key for the song. Of course, Capitol had four songs in its possession it could have included ( From Me To You, Misery, There s A Place and the German-language version of She Loves You, had all yet to appear on an LP in America), but they went to the Beatles and asked for something new ASAP. With no new material ready to go the band pulled two Larry Williams songs from their pre-fame club repertoire, Bad Boy and Dizzy Miss Lizzy, that could be recorded in one day and then the tapes would be air-freighted to Capitol Records in Los Angeles. 20

But in true McCartney fashion, it s just a fun, rocking tune with throwaway lyrics.

The Beatles - Savoy Truffle - The Beatles (Harrison) Lead vocal: George George took his inspiration for his fourth song on the White Album from a box of chocolates, specifically a Mackintosh s Good News double centre chocolate assortment box, said by George to be Eric Clapton s favorite brand. Most of the candies mentioned by George in the song came from the specific candies found in the box. Confections such as Creme Tangerine, Montelimart, Ginger Sling, Coffee Dessert and Savoy Truffle were part of the assortment. Cool Cherry Cream and Coconut Fudge were Harrison creations. When George sings But you ll have to have them all pulled out after the Savoy Truffle, it is a warning to his friend Eric Clapton that he will have to have his decaying teeth pulled out. After some rehearsal, the backing track was recorded in one take on October 3, 1968, at Trident Studios. With George playing electric piano, Paul on 24

25 Rickenbacker bass, and Ringo on drums. Harrison s lead vocal was recorded at Trident Studios on October 5. Chris Thomas score for saxophones (distorted at Harrison s request) was recorded at Abbey Road on October 11. The final overdubs for Savoy Truffle on October 14 were also the last instruments recorded during the White Album sessions: organ, tambourine, bongos, and George playing a lead guitar part on his Fender Telecaster. This is the third of four Harrison songs on the White Album that John Lennon does not appear on. WHO S SINGING THAT BEATLES SONG? BREAK The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band Lead vocal: Paul Recording began on February 1, 1967 for what would become the title track of the new Beatles album. The song was written entirely by Paul McCartney. It was McCartney s idea to give the Beatles alter egos -- they would become Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band -- for this album. Nine takes were attempted, two of which were complete run-throughs. For the first time ever an instrument (Paul s bass guitar) was directly injected into the recording console instead of through an amplifier. Vocals were added the following evening, and the track sat for a month while the band worked on other material. The group returned to the title track on March 3 with the addition of four

26 French horns played by outside musicians. Paul also came up with the idea of simulating a concert performance by the alter-ego band. The sound of the band warming up was taken from the February 10 orchestra session for A Day In The Life. Other effects (the crowd settling down, applause, and laughter) were taken from the vast Abbey Road tape archives. The screaming at the end of the song was taken from the Capitolrecorded Beatles concert at the Hollywood Bowl. On the Sgt. Pepper album the end of the title track segues into Ringo s With A Little help From My Friends. The Beatles - With A Little Help From My Friends - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band Lead vocal: Ringo The first instance on a Beatles album where one song segues into another without the usual few seconds of silence between the tracks. This was to give the listener the feeling of a continuous concert performance. Written on the afternoon of March 29, 1967 by Paul with help from John at Paul s house on Cavendish Avenue in St. John s Wood specifically as a song for Ringo Starr to sing on the new album. It was recorded that evening. Although he liked the song, Ringo refused to sing the original lyrics to the opening verse. Ringo: The original first verse to that was What would you do if I sang out of tune? Would you throw a tomato at me? And I said, I m not singing that. John and Paul quickly changed the line to Would you stand up and walk out on me? The rhythm track was recorded in ten takes the same day Paul and John write the song, with Paul on piano, George on Hammond organ, John on guitar and Ringo on drums. Vocals were added as Take 11. Originally titled Bad Finger Boogie. The screaming at the beginning of the song was taken from the Capitol-recorded Beatles concert at the Hollywood Bowl. On the Sgt. Pepper album the end of the title track segues into With A Little help From My Friends. The Beatles - Two Of Us - Let It Be Lead vocals: Paul and John A Paul McCartney solo composition originally entitled On Our Way Home. Thought by many to be a song about John and Paul, "Two of Us" is actually a song written by Paul about himself and his soon-to-be wife, Linda Eastman. The lyrics are derived from

27 various experiences where the two would get in the car with Paul's dog, Martha, and just drive in the countryside until they were lost. One particular day, Linda parked the car and went for a walk with her camera and Paul sat in the car and wrote the basic tune for the song. Paul introduced the song to the other Beatles during the January 1969 sessions in which the group was working up seven or eight new songs to include in a one-hour concert television special. At this time, On Our Way Home was not the Everly Brothers-styled acoustic version heard on the released album. Both John and producer Glyn Johns suggested to Paul that an acoustic arrangement might suit the song better, but McCartney was thinking in terms of how it might play in the concert TV special, so he wanted a fast song. On January 24, after numerous run-throughs that seemed to go nowhere, John again suggested they try it with acoustic guitars, and Paul agreed. The line-up was Paul on his Martin D-28 acoustic guitar, John on acoustic guitar, George on his Fender Telecaster (playing a bass part on the top strings) and Ringo on drums. The first performance with acoustic guitar featured a solo John vocal on the first verse. For the mixes submitted to Apple, Glyn Johns selected a January 24 take of the song (one without Lennon s whistling at the end of the song). One of these nonwhistling takes can be heard on the Anthology 3 album. The version found on the Let It Be was the second performance of three (numbered Takes 10, 11, 12) on January 31. This is the performance shown in the Let It Be film. John s opening dialog ( I Dig A Pygmy by Charles Hawtrey and the Deaf-aids. Phase one in which Doris gets her oats ) followed Ringo hitting his snare drum was recorded before the group played I Dig A Pony on January 21. Charles Hawtrey was a British actor and deaf-aids is British slang for hearing aids. American Beatles fans got their first glimpse of a bearded Paul McCartney and the Beatles performing Two Of Us when a clip of the song as seen in the Let It Be film was shown on The Ed Sullivan Show on March 1, For Rick The Bass Player (RIP) The Beatles - Hey Bulldog - Yellow Submarine In early February 1968, the Beatles were on a tight schedule. They had two weeks to audition and record possible songs for their next single, which would be released while they were away on an extended trip to India where the group would meditate with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. In addition to picking the single sides they would need to spend a day with a film crew making a short promotional film for the song. The Paul McCartney-penned Lady Madonna was chosen as the A-side and would be the subject of the promo film. On the last weekend of recording, the Beatles were informed they were one song short of the four new songs needed for Yellow Submarine, and a new song had to be recorded before they left for India. The song shortage was due to Baby, You re A Rich Man, which had been earmarked for the film soundtrack, being used as the B-side of the All You Need Is Love single.
