2 9AM The Beatles - I Feel Fine- A Collection Of Oldies The Beatles eighth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. Recorded in nine takes on October 18, Written entirely by John Lennon. He based the guitar riff on Bobby Parker s obscure R&B record Watch Your Step. The recording marked the first occasion in which guitar feedback had been deliberately incorporated into a pop song. The sound was achieved by Paul plucking a single bass string and John getting amplifier feedback from his guitar. Issued in the U.S. on November 23, 1964, and in U.K. four days later. Not included on the Beatles For Sale LP, which was released on December 4, 1964 in the UK. On U.S. albums: Beatles 65 - Capitol LP UK: Non-album single (A-side) On UK album: A Collection of Beatles Oldies - Parlophone LP (1966) The Beatles - Eight Days A Week - Beatles For Sale 2

3 Recorded primarily on October 6, It is the first instance of the Beatles taking an unfinished idea into the studio and experimenting with different approaches to a song. Eight Days A Week is the first pop song with a fade-in introduction. Written mostly by Paul, the title was taken from a line spoken by a limo driver. McCartney: I was being driven over to visit John. The chauffeur was talking away to me, saying how hard his boss worked the staff, so hard that they seem to do eight days a week. We ve altered the plot a bit for the song, of course. The bloke loves the girl eight days a week. In later years John Lennon incorrectly referred to this title in interviews as the original working title for the film Help! The actual working title of Help! was Eight Arms To Hold You. On September 20, 1964 as the band and their entourage flew to their final North American Tour concert destination, the press corps on board the Beatles private plane witnessed from a distance, careful not to interrupt, the four Beatles huddled together working on a new song. John, Paul, and George on guitars and Ringo tapping his knees, and all humming the tune of what would become Eight Days A Week. Released as a single b/w I Don t Want To Spoil The Party in the U.S. on February 15, Beatles VI - Capitol LP The Beatles - If I Fell - A Hard Day s Night and Paul John Lennon s stunning ballad If I Fell was by far the most complex song he had written to date. It could be considered a progression from This Boy with its similar chord structure and intricate harmonies by John and Paul, recorded at their request together on one microphone. Performed live on their world tour throughout the summer of Completed in 15 takes on February 27, Flip side of And I Love Her in the U.S. 3

4 A Hard Day s Night - United Artists LP Something New - Capitol LP The Beatles - Things We Said Today - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: Paul Written in May 1964 on board a yacht called Happy Days during Paul McCartney's holiday in the Virgin Islands with his girlfriend Jane Asher, plus Ringo Starr and his future wife Maureen. Recorded in three takes on June 2, In his 1980 interview with Playboy magazine John Lennon remembered this being one of Paul s better songs. McCartney double tracked his vocals. John Lennon's piano part was meant to be omitted from the final mix, but lack of separation between instruments meant that its sound leaked into other microphones during recording. As a result it can be heard on the released version. The b-side of the UK A Hard Day s Night single. Something New - Capitol LP * (Pick person in crowd for 66) BREAK 4 from `64 to kick off this live edition of BWTB How about we slip a year and jump to 1966 somebody wanna pick a song from 1966? The Beatles - I Want To Tell You - Revolver (Harrison) 4

5 Lead vocal: George The backing track was recorded in five takes on June 2, George Harrison's third song on Revolver, was, he later said, "about the avalanche of thoughts that are so hard to write down or say or transmit." Once again Harrison had no idea what to call his composition. The band briefly kicked around random ideas, and the song was recorded under the working title Laxton's Superb, a type of apple. It later became known as I Don't Know, which was George s answer when producer George Martin asked whether Harrison had come up with a title. By the day of the final mix (June 6, 1966), Harrison had settled on the title I Want To Tell You. Contains the first bass overdub on a Beatles record. Paul had his bass recorded on a different track really allowed for more options when it came time to mix the song. Revolver - Capitol LP The Beatles - The Word - Rubber Soul Recorded in three takes at a late night session starting on November 10, 1965 that ran until 4 a.m. the next morning. Overdubs include Paul on piano, George Martin on harmonium, and Ringo playing the maracas. The song is a full collaboration between Lennon and McCartney, and began as an attempt to write a song based around a single note. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - Glass Onion - The Beatles In 1980 John described Glass Onion as one of his throwaways, but the word play in the song is fascinating. Aside from many references to other Beatles songs, listeners were probably left guessing what Lennon meant by phrases such as bent backed tulips, cast iron shore, and dovetail joint. Specifically the phrase looking through the bent backed tulips to see how the other half lives referred to a floral arrangement on display at the posh London restaurant Parkes. The Cast Iron Shore is a name for Liverpool s beach, and a dovetail joint is not a drug reference, but a type of construction wood joint. The title Glass Onion is British slang for monocle (or eye piece), and was one of the names suggested by John for the Iveys, an Apple band that changed its name to Badfinger. 5

6 The Beatles - I Am The Walrus Magical Mystery Tour (EP) The Beatles sixteenth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. Magical Mystery Tour - Capitol LP 1967 saw the release of the Beatles greatest single combination ( Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane ), their most critically-acclaimed album to date ( Sgt. Pepper ), a worldwide audience was clamoring to purchase their All You Need Is Love single, and, as December rolled around, they were enjoying yet another number one single for the record books ( Hello, Goodbye / I Am The Walrus ) and the double-ep set for the music from Magical Mystery Tour was selling briskly and would land at or near the top of the singles charts in Great Britain. The Beatles were on a roll. What could possibly go wrong? 6

7 From start to finish, Magical Mystery Tour was Paul McCartney s brainchild. Of course, the idea looked great on paper, but the reality of creating a 50-minute film without sufficient advance planning or having the always necessary Plan B ready to go, proved to be a fatal flaw for a project that seemed to be being written as the film camera rolled. On December 26, 1967, Boxing Day in England, BBC-TV ran the cobbled together mish-mash that was Magical Mystery Tour to what had to be a jaw-dropping reaction from fans. For four years the Beatles could do no wrong and everything they touched turned to gold. On their first major misstep critics pounced and fans were certainly disappointed. The failure of the project left a stain on what was otherwise a magnificent year for the Beatles. When the TV movie was blasted by critics and fans alike, it was McCartney that received the blame. The Beatles - Maggie Mae - Let It Be (Trad. arr. Lennon-McCartney-Harrison-Starkey) During the casual Get Back sessions in January 1969, the Beatles would veer unexpectedly into different songs while trying to find their groove. Usually the impromptu jamming took them through old rock n roll songs ( Shake Rattle and Roll, Blue Suede Shoes, Bye Bye Love, and the like). In between takes of Paul s Two Of Us, on January 24, 1969, the group performed a traditional Liverpool folk song about a prostitute who robbed a sailor. The song is believed to date back to the early 19th century. At just 38-seconds, it is the second shortest song in the group's official catalogue; the briefest is Her Majesty A little something for everyone in that first set 9.26 BREAK Hey kids next Sunday Fathers Day / LIVE at Anaheim Hilton ALL PAUL B day Show/ w/ Wings Denny Laine Hot Wheels cars! 8 8 John Lennon Instant Karma! (We All Shine On) Inspired by a conversation with Yoko s ex-husband, Tony Cox in Denmark two days earlier John woke up and started banging out a new tune on the piano which he completed in an hour. Within hours, John wrangled musicians and producer, Phil Spector to record the song. It was put to tape later that evening and the track was released ten days later. The Beatles - Tell Me Why - A Hard Day s Night Completed in eight takes on February 27, 1964 in between And I Love Her and If I Fell. Tell Me Why was written primarily by John and was his attempt to mimic the New York girl group sound The Beatles were so fond of. A Hard Day s Night - United Artists LP Something New - Capitol LP 8

9 The Beatles - Think For Yourself - Rubber Soul (Harrison) Lead vocal: George The fifth original composition by George Harrison to be recorded by The Beatles was completed on November 8, 1965 in one take with overdubs under the working title Won t Be There With You. The song features Paul playing his bass through a fuzz box to give it a distorted sound. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP RINGO Yer Sixteen RINGO 1973 QUIZ BREAK 9

Five months later, as the deadline to submit Rubber Soul was upon them, they grabbed the unfinished song, threw on some overdubs and decreed it finished. Specifically, they added a tone pedal guitar, tambourine, maracas, and more vocals on November 11, 1965, the final day of recording for Rubber Soul. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP 11

12 The Beatles - Maxwell s Silver Hammer - Abbey Road Lead vocal: Paul Paul began work on Maxwell s Silver Hammer in October 1968, which was too late for the song to be considered for the White Album. He introduced the still unfinished song to the band during the Get Back sessions, on January 3, 1969, and the band is seen running through it in the film Let It Be. The first proper recording took place at Abbey Road Studios on July 9, The backing track features Paul on piano, George on Fender Bass VI (a six-string bass guitar) and Ringo on drums. Sixteen takes were recorded. Overdubs included John on his Gibson J-160E acoustic guitar and George on Telecaster. On July 10, Paul added his lead vocal, George Martin played Hammond organ and Paul, George and Ringo provided backing vocals. A proper blacksmith s anvil, rented from a theatrical agency, was brought in for Ringo to hit with a hammer. More guitar and a new vocal were added on July 11, and the song was left until August 6, when Paul overdubbed a Moog synthesizer part BREAK 12

13 Hey kids next Sunday Fathers Day / LIVE at Anaheim Hilton ALL PAUL B day Show/ w/ Wings Denny Laine Hot Wheels cars! And since next week will be 3 hours of McCartney so lets kick off this set w/ a George Harrisong ya cool with Judy? Thought so The Beatles - Don t Bother Me With The Beatles (Harrison) Lead vocal: George George Harrison s first recorded original song. While some may see it as a misfortune that Harrison was surrounded by two of the most gifted songwriters in history, this proximity gave him great insight into the mechanics of writing a song from scratch. His first attempt was more than a throwaway composition. He called Don t Bother Me an exercise to see if he could write a song, and it was written while George was sick in a bed at the Palace Court Hotel in Bournemouth where The Beatles were playing six nights at Gaumont Cinema in mid-august of It was during this engagement (on August 22) that photographer Robert Freeman took the iconic artsy cover photograph of the band in half lighting that would grace the cover of both the British With The Beatles album and the American Meet The Beatles! album. Using the basic Lennon-McCartney song structure George crafted a Beatles song that was on par with the material the band was currently working up for their second album. Getting the other Beatles and producer George Martin to take his work seriously was another matter, and it would take years for Harrison to finally be given his due. Normally he was relegated to one or two songs per album. 13

14 Meet The Beatles! - Capitol LP The Beatles - Rain - Non-LP B-side Recorded on April 14 and 16, The track is notable for the backwards vocal from John Lennon at the end of the song. The section is John singing part of the first verse but the tape is superimposed backwards in the mix. The song contains slowed down instruments, guitar distortion, and vocals recorded and played back at variable speed. Aside from Paul McCartney s dominant bass part, the song features a striking drum performance from Ringo, who has called Rain his favorite Beatles song. The B-side of Paperback Writer. Issued in America on May 23, 1966 and the UK on June 10, 1966, several months in advance of the Revolver album. Hey Jude - Capitol LP (1970) The Beatles - You Can t Do That - A Hard Day s Night The song was originally intended to be the A-side of the Beatles' sixth UK single, until McCartney came up with Can't Buy Me Love. By 1964 Lennon and McCartney were writing together less frequently, and the quality of Can't Buy Me Love spurred Lennon on to write the majority of the A Hard Day's Night album. The guitar solo was performed by Lennon - the first such occurrence on a Beatles release. The song was 14

15 finished in nine takes, only four of which were complete. It featured George Harrison's first prominent use of his new Rickenbacker 12-string guitar, given to him while in New York for The Ed Sullivan Show. You Can't Do That was filmed as part of the concert sequence in the A Hard Day's Night film, but it didn't make the final cut. The b-side of Can t Buy Me Love in the UK and U.S. The Beatles Second Album Capitol LP Matchbox (Perkins) Lead vocal: Ringo Carl Perkins is one of the few outsiders to be in the studio or control booth when the Beatles rehearsed or recorded. He was in England on a promotional tour and was there at the invitation of George Harrison, who was a huge fan. Perkins got to witness the most famous band in the world recording one of his original compositions on June 1, Ringo Starr was given the honor of singing the lead vocal. Harrison and Perkins remained lifelong friends. The Beatles would return to the Carl Perkins catalog once more a few months later when George sang Everybody s Trying to be My Baby for their fourth album. Five years later John Lennon performed Perkins biggest hit, Blue Suede Shoes, during his Plastic Ono Band appearance in Toronto in September 1969, the live recording of which was released as Live Peace in Toronto. The subject matter of the song Matchbox was lost on some younger American Beatles fans, many thinking the reference was to the popular brand of miniature toy cars wildly popular with American children at the time. In fact, it is about a box of matches used to light cigarettes. 15

16 Something New - Capitol LP U.K.: Non-album track (EP song) George Harrison This Song - Thirty-Three & 1/3 76 Still smarting from the My Sweet Lord/He s So Fine debacle which was coming to a conclusion (for which George lost the judgment); the track is sarcastic, but supplied with an upbeat melody and voice. A promo film was shot for the song (and first single off the album) during one night in a borrowed court room, with Ron Wood as a member of the audience and Jim Keltner playing the judge. The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour - Magical Mystery Tour (EP) Lead vocals: Paul and John When Paul McCartney was in the U.S. in early April 1967 he came up with the idea for a Beatles television film about a mystery tour on a bus. During the April 11 flight back home he began writing lyrics for the title song and sketching out some ideas for the film. Upon his arrival in London, Paul pitched his idea to Brian Epstein who happily approved. Paul then met with John to go over the details and the two began work on the film s title track. The title track was written primarily by Paul but was not finished when McCartney brought the song in to be recorded on April 25, John helped with the missing pieces during the session. 16

18 The Beatles - She Said She Said - Revolver The rhythm track was finished in three takes on June 21, 1966, the final day of recording for Revolver. When the recording session started the song was untitled. The key line came from a real-life incident. On August 24, 1965, during a break in Los Angeles from their North American Tour, The Beatles rented a house on Mulholland Drive. They played host to notables such as Roger McGuinn and David Crosby of the Byrds, actors and actresses, and a bevy of beautiful women, From Playboy, I believe, Lennon remembered. John, high on acid, found himself in a strange conversation with actor Peter Fonda, who kept coming up to him and whispering, I know what it s like to 18

19 be dead. As a child, Fonda had a near-death experience after accidentally shooting himself on the stomach. The song was a last-minute addition to the Revolver, rehearsed and recorded on the final day of sessions when the band discovered they were one song short. McCartney recalls getting into an argument with John and leaving the studio. He believes this is one of the only Beatle records he didn t play on. It is assumed George played the bass in McCartney s absence. John sings the lead vocal and plays the organ, and John and George double-tracked the backing vocals. Revolver - Capitol LP The Beatles - Bad Boy - A Collection Of Oldies (Williams) Recorded specifically for the American market at the urgent request of Capitol Records executives, who needed two songs to fill out their upcoming Beatles VI album. Of course, Capitol had four songs in its possession it could have included ( From Me To You, Misery, There s A Place and the German-language version of She Loves You, had all yet to appear on an LP in America), but they went to the Beatles and asked for something new ASAP. With no new material ready to go the band pulled two Larry Williams songs from their pre-fame club repertoire, Bad Boy and Dizzy Miss Lizzy, that could be recorded in one day and then the tapes would be air-freighted to Capitol Records in Los Angeles. Bad Boy would go unreleased in the UK for another year and a half until it turned up on the hits compilation A Collection of Beatles Oldies in December Recorded on May 10, Beatles VI - Capitol LP On UK album: A Collection of Beatles Oldies - Parlophone LP (1966) The Beatles - Sexy Sadie - The Beatles 19

20 On February 19, 1968, the Beatles left the comforts of the UK for an oft-postponed extended trip to Rishikesh, India. Arriving the next day, they had come to learn the powers of mediation under the direction of Indian guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at the Academy of Transcendental Meditation. The compound was located 150 feet above the Ganges surrounded on three sides by jungle-covered mountains. Students would live in stone cottages. Each cottage had twin beds and modern bathroom facilities. George Harrison had been enlightened by the Indian culture and the Maharishi s teachings and invited his band mates to immerse themselves in it as well. But instead of rejuvenating the other Beatles, the trip became tedious. Ringo and wife Maureen left Rishikesh after 10 days, complaining of missing their children and not liking the food. John and Paul turned it into a songwriting vacation, much to Harrison s irritation. Paul and girlfriend Jane Asher returned to England on March 26. In April, things came to a head when a rumor circulated that the Maharishi had made sexual advances toward at least one of the women at the compound. John: We went to see him after we stayed up all night discussing was it true or not true. When George started thinking it might be true, I thought well, it must be true, because if George started thinking it might be true there must be something to it. So we went to see Maharishi, the whole gang of us, the next day, charged down to his hut, his bungalow, and as usual, when the dirty work came, I was the spokesman. But instead of accusing the Maharishi outright of wrongdoing or inquiring about the specifics of the rumor, Lennon announced cryptically We re leaving. When the Maharishi asked why, Lennon s response was Well, if you re so cosmic you ll know why. True or not, Lennon and Harrison had had enough and left with their entourage immediately. Sexy Sadie was written by John while waiting at Delhi Airport, and was originally titled Maharishi with lyrics being Maharishi, what have you done? You made a fool of everyone. At Harrison s request, Lennon backed off and substituted Sexy Sadie for Maharishi. The Beatles - The Inner Light - Non-LP Track (Harrison) Lead vocal: George The Beatles seventeenth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. George s The Inner Light was selected as the B-side for the Lady Madonna single and represented his first lead vocal on a British single. George was in India to quickly record music for the soundtrack to the movie Wonderwall and the backing track for The Inner Light was recorded at EMI s recording studio in Bombay using local musicians on January 12, The backing track was finished in five takes. Harrison would add vocals and other embellishments at Abbey Road on February 6 and 8. It was the third song in consideration for the Spring 1968 Beatles single. The Inner Light was the last of the three Indian-flavored songs composed by George and the lyrics were taken directly from the poem of the same title from the Tao Te Ching. Rarities - Capitol LP (1980) 20

21 The Beatles - Across The Universe - Let It Be Prior to leaving for an extended trip to India to study Transcendental Meditation in early 1968, the Beatles recorded several new songs to fill the sides of their upcoming single, which would be released while they were away. John had originally wanted his new composition, Across The Universe, for the A-side of the single but was still not happy with the mix of the song. When the Beatles sat down to decide which two of their new recordings should be used, John preferred Across the Universe remain on the shelf for the time being, giving Paul s more commercial Lady Madonna the A-side. Across The Universe was written entirely by John and was recorded February 4, 1968, in eight takes. Overdubs were recorded on February 8. Comedian and author Spike Milligan had been at Abbey Road when the group was working on the song and some months later inquired about it. He was surprised to learn that Across the Universe was sitting unreleased in EMI s vault, so Milligan asked Lennon to donate the song to a charity album he was organizing for the World Wildlife Fund. Milligan was a British comedy legend who, along with Peter Sellers, starred in The Goon Show, one of John s all-time favorite programs. Lennon not only gladly contributed the song to be used on the charity album, but arranged to have the songwriting royalties from the recording given to the World Wildlife Fund. This charity album version, known by fans as the Wildlife version, was released in December Although it is popularly believed that the two versions of Across The Universe are different recordings, they are not. Both the Wildlife version and the Phil Spector re-produced version are derived from the same February 8, 1968, master tape. For the charity album, the sound of birds was added and the tape was sped up to give it a higher pitch. On April 1, 1970, Spector stripped some elements from the original February 8, 1968, master tape, slowed it down and added an orchestra and choir. The instrumental line-up is John on acoustic guitar, Paul on piano, George on tamboura and wah-wah guitar (second and third refrains only) and Ringo on drums BREAK 21

22 The Beatles - Twist And Shout Please Please Me (Medley-Russell) The last song recorded during the marathon session on February 11, Two takes were completed before Lennon s voice gave out. The released version is the first take. Originally recorded by The Isley Brothers in May 1962, The Beatles performed it regularly in their live act between 1962 and Its inclusion in the 1986 film Ferris Bueller s Day Off sent the song up the Billboard singles chart 22 years after its initial U.S. release. In the film I Should Have Known Better was performed in the train compartment scene, which in reality was the interior of a van with crew members rocking the van to fake the train in motion. 26 26 The Beatles - Birthday - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul with John Birthday is a song written entirely by Paul McCartney in the studio on September 18, 1968, while he waited for the other Beatles to arrive. The session that afternoon was purposely scheduled to start two hours earlier than usual so the Beatles could take a break and walk to Paul s home and watch The Girl Can t Help It, the 1956 rock and roll film starring Jayne Mansfield and featuring the likes of Little Richard, Fats Domino, the Platters, Gene Vincent, and Eddie Cochran. The movie was having its British television premiere on the BBC that evening, and Paul lived around the corner from Abbey Road Studios, on Cavendish Avenue. The instrumental backing track included Paul on Epiphone Casino electric guitar, George Harrison on Fender Bass VI (a six-string bass guitar), John on Epiphone Casino electric guitar and Ringo on drums. By the 20th take the backing track was complete and the Beatles headed out to Paul s house to watch the movie. When they returned to the studio they worked on overdubs. In addition to Paul s scorching lead vocal, overdubs included piano, drums, lead guitar, bass guitar, tambourine (played by George with gloves on so he wouldn t get blisters), handclaps, and backing vocals. While Paul is predominantly the lead vocalist, he is joined on occasion by John. The female voices heard on the birthday refrain in the middle eight belong to Pattie Harrison and Yoko Ono. In Barry Miles Many Years From Now Paul recalls walking through the Indian jungle near the Maharishi s compound with his guitar singing Ob-La,Di, Ob-La, Da, life goes on, bra, taking the phrase from Jimmy Scott, a Nigerian conga player who had been a part of the London music scene since the 50s. In Scott s native language, Ob la di ob la da is an expression meaning life goes on. Paul created characters for his story - Desmond and Molly and their barrow in a Caribbean marketplace. A barrow is a cart or small vehicle used to carry a load and pulled or pushed by hand.
