2 PLAYLIST Jan. 27 th 2013 Let s get to it. We are BWTB the place Where you can go When you feel low When you feel blue. That sounds like a song! Good Morning HR. 1 The Beatles - There s A Place Please Please Me (McCartney-Lennon) and Paul One of many songs that were written in the front room of Paul McCartney s Forthlin Road home. John and Paul were so excited about this newly written song that as they entered the EMI studios on February 11, 1963, to record their first album it was their priority to record this song first. After ten takes they moved on to something else and revisited it later in the day. Often referred to by American Beatles fans as one of the few lost Beatles songs, There s A Place was in print in the U.S. only on the Vee-Jay LP Introducing On U.S. albums: Introducing The Beatles - Vee-Jay LP Rarities - Capitol LP 2

3 The Beatles - Do You Want To Know A Secret Please Please Me (McCartney-Lennon) Lead vocal: George Recorded February 11, Written primarily by John Lennon for George Harrison to sing. The song was given to another Brian Epstein-managed act, Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas, to cover. Their version topped the British charts in late spring Inspired by "I'm Wishing," a song from Walt Disney s 1937 animated film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs that Lennon s mother used to sing to him when he was a child. 4 4 flip of I Want To Hold You Hand in UK The Beatles - Yes It Is Single b-side Lead vocals: John, Paul and George Recorded over five hours on February 16, 1965, the rhythm track of Yes It Is was completed in 14 takes. John, Paul and George then spent three hours recording the vocals live, the best version being laid on top of Take 14 as an overdub. Starting in 1965 this was the new way they would record. Previously, every edit piece or overdub would have been numbered. Now they just recorded until they got it right and placed that on top of a numbered take, the best rhythm track. Written primarily by John Lennon. John: That's me trying a rewrite of This Boy, but it didn't work. Beatles VI - Capitol LP UK: Non-album single (B-side) The Beatles - And I Love Her - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: Paul Written mainly by Paul with the middle eight by John it was released as a single in the U.S. reaching #12. Recorded initially as a heavier, up-tempo number on February 25, 1964, The Beatles attempted two takes and moved on to something else. On February 26 they struggled with the simpler, now acoustic arrangement through 12 more takes and Ringo swapping his drums for congas, ultimately 4

5 leaving it to be re-made the next day. Finally, on February 27, they had the arrangement to their liking and perfected the song in two completed takes (takes 20 and 21). A Hard Day s Night - United Artists LP Something New - Capitol LP A rare 5 song set to open the show hope you appreciated it! The Beatles - Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) - Rubber Soul Originally recorded on October 12, 1965, The Beatles decided to scrap this version and re-record the song nine days later, on October 21. George Harrison provides the sitar, the first appearance of the instrument on a Beatles recording, though the sitar can be heard in the instrumental introduction on the American version of Help! Written mainly by John with some lyrical assistance from Paul. John: I was trying to write about an affair without letting me wife know so it was very gobbledegook. I was sort of writing from my experiences, girls flats. Paul has said that the ending lyrics, so I lit a fire, 5

6 refer to the house being burned down in an act of revenge by the spurned lover. Bob Dylan did a slight parody of the song on his 1966 album, Blonde on Blonde. Check out the song 4 th Time Around. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP BREAK The Beatles - It s Only Love - Help! Recorded in six takes on June 15, The first Beatles song to include a reference to getting high ( I get high when I see you go by ). The working title prior to lyrics being written was That s a Nice Hat. George Martin and his Orchestra recorded the instrumental version of It s Only Love using the original title. In 1972 Lennon called It s Only Love the one song I really hate of mine. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP 6

7 The Beatles - I ve Just Seen A Face - Help! Lead vocal: Paul Written by Paul at the Asher family home on Wimpole Street. Paul had the tune prior to coming up with the lyrics and originally named the song Auntie Gin s Theme because his aunt liked it. George Martin s instrumental Help! album includes an orchestrated version of I ve Just Seen A Face using the title Auntie Gin s Theme. Recorded in six takes at the same June 14, 1965 McCartneydominated session that produced Yesterday and I m Down. One of only five Beatles songs Paul chose to perform live on his Wings Over America tour in Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - Wait - Rubber Soul Lead vocals: John and Paul Recorded June 17, 1965 during the Help! sessions, the song was left unfinished when The Beatles had hit the deadline to submit the album. Five months later, as the deadline to submit Rubber Soul was upon them, they grabbed the unfinished song, threw on some overdubs and decreed it finished. Specifically, they added a tone pedal guitar, tambourine, maracas, and more vocals on November 11, 1965, the final day of recording for Rubber Soul. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP 7

8 Julian Lennon I Don t Wanna Know Photograph Smile MIC ON HERE!!!! The Beatles - I Don t Want To Spoil The Party - Beatles For Sale and Paul Written primarily by John, who called it one of his favorites. Recorded in 19 takes (only five of which were complete run-throughs) on September 29, The B- side of the Eight Days A Week single in the U.S., issued February 15, Beatles VI - Capitol LP Paul Things We Said Today 1993 Soundcheck The Beatles - I ll Be Back - A Hard Day s Night Recorded in 16 takes on June 1, I'll Be Back was written mostly by John Lennon, and was a reworking of the chords to Del Shannon's 1961 hit Runaway. 8

9 Beatles fans in America would have to wait five months to hear this exquisite Beatles song, one of Lennon finest compositions, because Capitol Records held it off their Something New album and released it on Beatles 65 in December Beatles 65 - Capitol LP BREAK # 1 this week in US 1964 The Beatles - I Want to Hold Your Hand - A Collection Of Beatles Oldies with Paul The Beatles fifth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. I Want to Hold Your Hand was the Beatles first single issued by Capitol Records. It is the song that launched Beatlemania in the United States. It was written equally by John and Paul in the basement music room in Richard and Margaret Asher s house at 57 Wimpole Street in the west end of London in September Paul had been dating the couple s daughter, actress Jane Asher, and was spending a lot of time at the Asher home whenever he was in London. Paul would eventually accept an invitation to move in, taking up residence in their attic. b/w The Beatles - I Saw Her Standing There Please Please Me (McCartney-Lennon) Lead vocal: Paul Recorded February 11, Specially selected by Capitol Records staff members to be the b-side of the American I Want to Hold Your Hand single on Capitol in the U.S., replacing This Boy for the honor. The first song on the first Beatles LP. On U.S. albums: Introducing The Beatles (with 1, 2, 3 inexplicably missing from Paul s count-in) - Vee-Jay LP Meet the Beatles! - Capitol LP The US version #1 TODAY in 1966 (47 yrs ago?) The Beatles - The Word - Rubber Soul 9

10 Recorded in three takes at a late night session starting on November 10, 1965 that ran until 4 a.m. the next morning. Overdubs include Paul on piano, George Martin on harmonium, and Ringo playing the maracas. The song is a full collaboration between Lennon and McCartney, and began as an attempt to write a song based around a single note. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - I m Looking Through You - Rubber Soul Lead vocal: Paul Written by Paul after an argument with then-girlfriend, actress Jane Asher. Initially recorded on October 24, 1965, the song was re-recorded from scratch on November 6, but McCartney was still not satisfied. Four days later, on November 10, the group took another stab at it. Paul s lead vocal was superimposed the next day. The version issued by Capitol Records has two false starts. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP 10

11 The Beatles - In My Life - Rubber Soul Lead vocals: John with Paul Recorded October 18, 1965 and written primarily by John, who called it his first real major piece of work. Of all the Lennon-McCartney collaborations only two songs have really been disputed by John and Paul themselves -- Eleanor Rigby and In My Life. Both agree that the lyrics are 100% Lennon, but John says Paul helped on the musical bridge, while Paul recalls writing the entire melody on John s Mellotron. The gorgeous piano solo is provided by George Martin. To give his solo a harpsichord sound the producer played the piano at half speed and an octave lower so that when played at regular speed it would be in the correct key for the song. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP 11

12 The Beatles - Girl - Rubber Soul Written primarily by John, the song was completed in two takes on November 11, The song is notable for the naughty backing vocal (Paul and George repeating the word tit ) and John s heavy breathing during his vocal. John called this one of his best. Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - Run For Your Life - Rubber Soul The first song completed when sessions for Rubber Soul began on October 12, John Lennon lifted the opening line ( I d rather see you dead little girl than to be with another man ) from Baby Let s Play House, popularized by Elvis Presley. 12

13 Rubber Soul - Capitol LP The Beatles - Michelle - Rubber Soul Lead vocal: Paul The basic backing track of this classic song was completed in one take on November 3, Various overdubs and double-tracking were added to complete the song the same day. Lennon is credited with coming up with the I love you middle eight section. The tune had been written by Paul several years earlier but he didn t have proper lyrics until Rubber Soul - Capitol LP # 1 Today in 1966 I ll make any excuse to play songs from the US Rubber Soul my personal favorite LP of all time by anybody those 12 songs. The Beatles - All Together Now - Yellow Submarine Lead vocal: Paul 13

14 In May 1967, with the Sgt. Pepper album in the can and awaiting release, the Beatles went to work on two projects at the same time. They began recording the title track for Magical Mystery Tour and also starting to record the new songs they had promised for the Yellow Submarine film. The Beatles - Only A Northern Song - Yellow Submarine (Harrison) Lead vocal: George Originally recorded for the Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band album, producer George Martin felt the song was not good enough for inclusion and ask George Harrison to go back to the drawing board. Harrison came up with Within You, Without You and the rejected track was saved as the first of four new songs the band was obligated to deliver for the Yellow Submarine animated film project. Northern Songs Ltd is the song publishing company that licenses and collects royalties for the increasingly lucrative Lennon-McCartney song catalog. At the time, the company also handled Harrison and Starkey s songwriting output. In 1967, the company was 50% owned by music executive Dick James, and 50% owned by John, Paul and Brian Epstein s NEMS Enterprises Ltd. So, in a case of art imitating life, George s Only A Northern Song actually is a Northern song. The lyrics are directed at the company s majority owner Dick James. Nine takes were recorded of the backing track on February 13, 1967, four being complete runthroughs. The line-up was Harrison on organ, Lennon on piano, McCartney on bass and Starr on drums. Two lead vocals were recorded the following night. The Beatles returned to the song on April 20, 1967, adding vocals, bass guitar, a trumpet and glockenspiel. The Beatles - Hey Bulldog - Yellow Submarine In early February 1968, the Beatles were on a tight schedule. They had two weeks to audition and record possible songs for their next single, which would be released while they were away on an extended trip to India where the group would meditate with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. In addition to picking the single sides they would need to spend a day with a film crew making a short promotional film for the song The Beatles - It s All Too Much - Yellow Submarine (Harrison) Lead vocal: George Recording began with the working title Too Much at De Lane Lea Music Recording Studios, the basement studio of an office building directly opposite the Holborn Underground station in London. On May 25, 1967, one week before the release of the Sgt. Pepper album, the band ran through numerous rehearsals and recorded four proper takes of the backing track. The instruments were George on Hammond organ, Paul on bass guitar, John on lead guitar (including the soaring feedback at the beginning of the song) and Ringo on drums. Overdubs were added the next day at De Lane Lea: George s lead vocal, John and Paul s backing vocal, handclaps and percussion, including cowbell, woodblock and tambourine. 14

15 The Beatles - Yellow Submarine - Revolver / Yellow Submarine Lead vocal: Ringo The Beatles thirteenth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. One of the Beatles most innovative creations to date (1966), a children s singalong, was written mostly by Paul with assistance from John for Ringo s vocal contribution to the Revolver album. The track was later used as the title song of the group s animated film project, which was released in 1968 in the UK. Pop singer Donovan helped Paul with the lyrics, coming up with the memorable line, Sky of blue, sea of green. Although at the time of its release it was rumored to be about drugs, McCartney denied this, saying, I knew Yellow Submarine would get connotations, but it really was a children s song in the key of Ringo. The basic rhythm track was recorded in four takes on May 26, BREAK The Beatles - I Should Have Known Better - A Hard Day s Night Following their triumphant visit to America The Beatles were thrust back to work. On February 25, 1964 they dove into new songs slated for their film. On this day they recorded You Can t Do That and began work on Paul s And I Love Her and John s I Should Have Known Better. In the film I Should Have Known Better was performed in the train compartment scene, which in reality was the interior of a van with crew members rocking the van to fake the train in motion. Used as the flip side of the U.S. A 15

16 Hard Day s Night single. Paul s Things We Said Today was the UK b-side. Recorded Feb , A Hard Day s Night - United Artists LP Hey Jude - Apple LP (1970) The Beatles - Tell Me Why - A Hard Day s Night Completed in eight takes on February 27, 1964 in between And I Love Her and If I Fell. Tell Me Why was written primarily by John and was his attempt to mimic the New York girl group sound The Beatles were so fond of. A Hard Day s Night - United Artists LP Something New - Capitol LP The Beatles - I Wanna Be Your Man With The Beatles Lead vocal: Ringo When Ringo Starr rejected Little Child, the song John and Paul had written for him to sing on the band s second album, they created a similar song, but one that would be easier for Ringo to sing and more in his vocal range. I Wanna Be Your Man would be Ringo s vocal contribution to the With The Beatles LP, and was often performed at Beatles concerts. The day before the song was to be recorded John and Paul were walking along Charing Cross Road in London when passing in a taxi were Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Paul McCartney: They shouted from the taxi and we yelled, Hey, hey, give us a lift, give us a lift, and we bummed a lift off them. So there were the four of us sitting in a taxi and I think Mick said, Hey we re recording. Got any songs? And we said, Aaaah, yes, sure, we got one. How about Ringo s song? You could do it as a 16

17 single. John and Paul were invited to the Rolling Stones rehearsal to audition their new, but still unfinished song. There Lennon told them, If you guys really like the main part of the song, we ll finish it for you right now, and within minutes, they returned with the song finished on the spot. The Rolling Stones recorded the song and it became their first big British hit, peaking at number 12. The Beatles recorded their version of I Wanna Be Your Man the next day, September 11, The Hammond organ heard faintly in the mix is played by George Martin. Meet The Beatles! - Capitol LP The Beatles - Good Morning Good Morning - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band Based on a Kellogg s Cornflakes television commercial John heard while sitting at the piano and feeling a bit stuck trying to write something for Sgt. Pepper. Paul plays a stinging guitar solo and flourishes with his right-handed Fender Esquire. The basic rhythm track was recorded on February 8, 1967 in eight takes, four of them complete. Overdubs followed with John s lead vocal and Paul s bass added on February 16. A horn section consisting of members of the Brian Epstein-managed band Sounds Inc. (previously Sounds Incorporated) was brought in on March 13. Sounds Incorporated had been one of the opening acts on the Beatles 1964 and 1965 tours. 17

18 Paul Rock Island Line 1993 Sound check John - Rock Island Line Home `78 George - Rock Island Line SNL `76 Ringo - Rock Island Line The Beatles - Day Tripper Past Masters Recorded: 16 October 1965 Rubber Soul sessions Oct. `65 Yesterday & Today LP here in the US The eleventh official EMI release. The first official double "A" side release of We Can Work It Out Inspired in part by John and George's first experience with acid, "Day Tripper" was written under pressure for use as a single for the Christmas season. John wrote most of the song, with Paul contributing to each of the verses The Beatles - And Your Bird Can Sing - Revolver John Lennon called this fan favorite another of my throwaways...fancy paper around an empty box. On another occasion he simply referred to it as another horror. The song, 18

19 written primarily by John, is notable mainly for the twin guitar riffs -- played live without overdubs by George Harrison and Paul McCartney -- that drive the song, and Paul s distinctive bass notes at the end of the song. Lennon played the rhythm guitar in the D major position with the capo on the second fret to account for the song being in the key of E. John used the second fret capo several times ("Nowhere Man," "Julia," "Norwegian Wood," to name a few). Initial recording of the song commenced on April 20, 1966, with two takes being completed. Take 2 was deemed the best and various overdubs were added. While recording vocals John and Paul got a case of the giggles and laughed their way through much of the song. That hilarious version can be found on the Anthology 2 compilation. On April 26, the band decided to scrap the previous version and start over from scratch, recording 11 takes. The term bird was British slang at the time for girl. Although Lennon never elaborated on the inspiration behind the lyrics, it is believed to refer to the rivalry between The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Although the two groups were friends, Lennon saw the Stones as Beatles copyists, and the 'bird' in the title may have been Mick Jagger s on-again, off-again girlfriend/muse Marianne Faithfull. The working title of the song was You Don t Get Me. And Your Bird Can Sing was one of three songs issued in America six weeks prior to their official release in the UK. American and Canadian Beatles fans heard I m Only Sleeping, And Your Bird Can Sing, and Doctor Robert first on Capitol Records Yesterday And Today album, issued June 20, The rest of the world had to wait until the first week of August for them to appear on the Revolver LP. "And Your Bird Can Sing" was used as the theme song of The Beatles' cartoon series during its third season. Yesterday And Today - Capitol LP The Beatles - The Inner Light - Non-LP Track (Harrison) Lead vocal: George The Beatles seventeenth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. George s The Inner Light was selected as the B-side for the Lady Madonna single and represented his first lead vocal on a British single. George was in India to quickly record music for the soundtrack to the movie Wonderwall and the backing track for The Inner Light was recorded at EMI s recording studio in Bombay using local musicians on January 12, The backing track was finished in five takes. Harrison would add vocals and other embellishments at Abbey Road on February 6 and 8. It was the third song in consideration for the Spring 1968 Beatles single. The Inner Light was the last of the three Indian-flavored songs composed by George and the lyrics were taken directly from the poem of the same title from the Tao Te Ching. Rarities - Capitol LP (1980) 19

20 George Harrison Ballad of Sir Frankie Crisp (Let It Roll) - All Things Must Pass 70 This was a tribute to the former owner of George s Henley-On-Thames estate. If you listen closely, you can hear George intoning, Oh, Sir Frankie Crisp, underneath the instrumental breaks between the verses. The Beatles - Old Brown Shoe - Non-LP B-Side (Harrison) Lead vocal: George On February 25, 1969, his 26 th birthday, George Harrison went to Abbey Road Studios and recorded elaborate eight-track demos of three of his latest compositions: Old Brown Shoe, Something, and All Things Must Pass. All three of the demos recorded this day can be found on the Anthology 3 album. Old Brown Shoe had made a brief appearance near the end of the Get Back sessions with a few run-through/rehearsals on January 28, The full band revisited the song for a proper recording on April 16, The rhythm track was finished in four takes, with George on lead guitar, Paul on jangle piano, John on rhythm guitar (which would be erased in favor of a Hammond organ part played by George on April 18), and Ringo on drums. Overdubs included bass guitar, lead guitar, and backing vocals by John and Paul. In his book, I Me Mine, George said, I started the chord sequences on piano, which I don t really play, and then began writing ideas for the words from various opposites Again, it s the duality of things - yes no, up down, left right, right wrong, etc. Released as the flip side of The Ballad Of John And Yoko in the UK on May 30, 1969, while the Get Back single was topping the charts. The single was issued by Capitol Records in the U.S. on June 4, Hey Jude - Capitol LP (1970) 20

21 HOUR 3 The Beatles - Bad Boy - A Collection Of Oldies (Williams) Recorded specifically for the American market at the urgent request of Capitol Records executives, who needed two songs to fill out their upcoming Beatles VI album. Of course, Capitol had four songs in its possession it could have included ( From Me To You, Misery, There s A Place and the German-language version of She Loves You, had all yet to appear on an LP in America), but they went to the Beatles and asked for something new ASAP. With no new material ready to go the band pulled two Larry Williams songs from their pre-fame club repertoire, Bad Boy and Dizzy Miss Lizzy, that could be recorded in one day and then the tapes would be air-freighted to Capitol Records in Los Angeles. Bad Boy would go unreleased in the UK for another year and a half until it turned up on the hits compilation A Collection of Beatles Oldies in December Recorded on May 10, Beatles VI - Capitol LP On UK album: A Collection of Beatles Oldies - Parlophone LP (1966) The Beatles - Leave My Kitten Alone Beatles For Sale sessions The Beatles Matchbox (Carl Perkins) Past Masters "Matchbox" is sung by Ringo, and was also recorded on 1st June. It's writer Carl Perkins was present at the sessions, although he did not participate. Carl had originally released "Matchbox" on the legendary Sun label on 11th February 1957, but failed to chart anywhere Boys German 21

22 The Beatles - Dizzy Miss Lizzy - Help! (Williams) Recorded specifically for the American market at the urgent request of Capitol Records executives, who needed two songs to fill out their upcoming Beatles VI album. Dizzy Miss Lizzy was added as the album closer on the UK Help! LP when several songs earmarked for the project fell through ( That Means A Lot and Wait ) and they decided against including the two most recent B-sides. Beatles VI - Capitol LP The Beatles - I m Down - Single Lead vocal: Paul Recorded in one take on June 14, Written entirely by Paul McCartney, who showed off his skills at the June 14 recording session by recording I ve Just Seen A Face in six takes, then the scorcher I m Down in one take, and following a dinner break, nailing Yesterday in two takes. I m Down was patterned after Little Richard s Long Tall Sally, or as George Harrison described it at the time, It s pretty wild because it has Paul s wild voice. Paul: I could do Little Richard's voice, which is a wild, hoarse, screaming thing. It's like an out-of-body experience. You have to leave your current sensibilities and go about a foot above your head to sing it. A lot of people were fans of Little Richard so I used to sing his stuff but there came a point when I wanted one of my own, so I wrote I'm Down. I ended up doing it at Shea Stadium. It worked very well for those kind of places, it was a good stage song. And in as much as they are hard to write, I'm proud of it. Those kind of songs with hardly any melody, rock 'n' roll songs, are much harder to write than ballads, because there's nothing to them. John Lennon plays the Hammond organ. The B-side of the Help! single, issued July 23, 1965 in the UK and July 19, 1965 in the U.S. 22

23 Non-album single (B-side) UK: Non-album single (B-side) The Beatles - One After Let It Be and Paul One of the oldest songs in the Lennon-McCartney catalog, One After 909 had been written by John when he was 17 or 18, and had been performed by the Quarrymen in 1960, and by the Beatles in their pre-fame club days. The song was first recorded by the Beatles at the March 5, 1963, session for their third EMI single. After completing both sides of the new single ( From Me To You and Thank You Girl ), John and Paul had two additional songs they wanted the group to record. In addition to One After 909 they also brought in What Goes On, but there was only enough time in the session to record one additional song, so One After 909 got the go-ahead. Six years later the group revisited the song, with Billy Preston on keyboards. In his 1980 Playboy interview, Lennon admitted the song was probably resurrected for Let It Be because of a lack of material. As the rooftop performance drew to a close John sang an impromptu line from Danny Boy. The previously unreleased 1963 version can be found on the Anthology 1 album. The Beatles - Any Time At All - A Hard Day s Night Recorded June 2, 1964, the last day of recording for the A Hard Day s Night album. John Lennon: An effort at writing It Won't Be Long - same ilk. C to A minor, C to A minor with me shouting. The song was in an unfinished state when Lennon brought it to the band to record on June 2. The group worked out the arrangement throughout the day and night. Up against the wall on a deadline to submit the album, the piano section in the middle eight was left without lyrics. They had run out of time. On April 8, 1988, Lennon's handwritten lyrics for Any Time At All were sold for 6,000 at an auction held at Sotheby's in London. Something New - Capitol LP The Beatles - I Feel Fine- A Collection Of Oldies The Beatles eighth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. 23

24 Recorded in nine takes on October 18, Written entirely by John Lennon. He based the guitar riff on Bobby Parker s obscure R&B record Watch Your Step. The recording marked the first occasion in which guitar feedback had been deliberately incorporated into a pop song. The sound was achieved by Paul plucking a single bass string and John getting amplifier feedback from his guitar. Issued in the U.S. on November 23, 1964, and in U.K. four days later. Not included on the Beatles For Sale LP, which was released on December 4, 1964 in the UK. On U.S. albums: Beatles 65 - Capitol LP UK: Non-album single (A-side) On UK album: A Collection of Beatles Oldies - Parlophone LP (1966) The Beatles - Twist And Shout Please Please Me (Medley-Russell) The last song recorded during the marathon session on February 11, Two takes were completed before Lennon s voice gave out. The released version is the first take. Originally recorded by The Isley Brothers in May 1962, The Beatles performed it regularly in their live act between 1962 and Its inclusion in the 1986 film Ferris Bueller s Day Off sent the song up the Billboard singles chart 22 years after its initial U.S. release. On U.S. albums: Introducing The Beatles - Vee-Jay LP The Early Beatles - Capitol LP The Beatles - Back In The U.S.S.R. - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul Written while in India, Paul s Back In The U.S.S.R. is based on Chuck Berry s 1959 hit Back In The U.S.A., but was written to mimic the classic sound of the Beach Boys. Beach Boys lead singer Mike Love was on the Transcendental Meditation sojourn in India with the Beatles in the spring of 1968 and as McCartney was working on his new song, Love suggested the lyrics about Ukraine and Moscow girls, similar to his lyrics in California Girls. Recording began on August 22, 1968, and it was during this session 24

25 that Ringo Starr officially quit the band. His departure was blamed on a disagreement with Paul over his drumming. Ringo flew to the Mediterranean to spend time on actor Peter Sellers yacht. It was there that he wrote Octopus s Garden. On September 3, Ringo returned to the studio to find his drum kit smothered in flowers. Ringo: I felt tired and discouraged took a week s holiday, and when I came back to work everything was all right again. But Ringo added, Paul is the greatest bass guitar player in the world. But he is also very determined; he goes on and on to see if he can get his own way. While that may be a virtue, it did mean that musical disagreements inevitably arose from time to time. The Beatles - Birthday - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul with John Birthday is a song written entirely by Paul McCartney in the studio on September 18, 1968, while he waited for the other Beatles to arrive. The session that afternoon was purposely scheduled to start two hours earlier than usual so the Beatles could take a break and walk to Paul s home and watch The Girl Can t Help It, the 1956 rock and roll film starring Jayne Mansfield and featuring the likes of Little Richard, Fats Domino, the Platters, Gene Vincent, and Eddie Cochran. The movie was having its British television premiere on the BBC that evening, and Paul lived around the corner from Abbey Road Studios, on Cavendish Avenue. The instrumental backing track included Paul on Epiphone Casino electric guitar, George Harrison on Fender Bass VI (a six-string bass guitar), John on Epiphone Casino electric guitar and Ringo on drums. By the 20th take the backing track was complete and the Beatles headed out to Paul s house to watch the movie. When they returned to the studio they worked on overdubs. In addition to Paul s scorching lead vocal, overdubs included piano, drums, lead guitar, bass guitar, tambourine (played by George with gloves on so he wouldn t get blisters), handclaps, and backing vocals. While Paul is predominantly the lead vocalist, he is joined on occasion by John. The female voices heard on the birthday refrain in the middle eight belong to Pattie Harrison and Yoko Ono. Paul McCartney I Got Stung (Schroeder-Hill) Run Devil Run 99 This was a 1959 No.1 single for Elvis. Paul: "It wasn't my favorite Elvis song, but I kept hearing 'Holy smoke landsakes alive, I never thought this would happen to me'. That intro kept grabbing me. I thought I'll do it a bit more raucous than Elvis." 25

26 The Beatles - Little Child With The Beatles Composed in about two hours just days before being recorded, Little Child was originally written for Ringo Starr to sing on The Beatles second album. When he passed, John and Paul penned a similar and simpler song for him to sing entitled I Wanna Be Your Man. John Lennon provides the lead vocal. Overdubs include John s harmonica part and Paul on piano. The song was never performed in concert by The Beatles. Recorded September 11 and 12, and October 3, Meet The Beatles! - Capitol LP The Beatles - Roll Over Beethoven With The Beatles (Berry) Lead vocal: George Chuck Berry s rock and roll standard was released as a single in May 1956 on Chess Records. It peaking at #29. A staple of The Beatles live show from the earliest days, Beatles fans will be surprised to learn that John Lennon was the lead singer of the song in those very early club days. In 1961 George Harrison took over lead vocals. Roll Over Beethoven was the opening song at The Beatles first concert in America, February 11, 1964 in Washington D.C., and opens Capitol s The Beatles Second Album, released on April 10, The Beatles Second Album - Capitol LP I Call Your Name - Long Tall Sally EP Composed by John Lennon and originally given to Billy J. Kramer with the Dakotas to use as the b-side of another Lennon song (credited to Lennon-McCartney), Bad to Me. Both songs had been recorded at Abbey Road by Kramer and band on June 27, 1963, with Paul McCartney in attendance. The Beatles version was recorded in seven takes on March 1, The Beatles Second Album - Capitol LP 26

27 U.K.: Non-album track (EP song) JPG&R The Beatles - Everybody s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey - The Beatles The Beatles had taken to recording rehearsals of songs and numbering them as takes. And if nothing recorded for a particular song seemed usable they d erase the tape and start again on another day. The first playing of this then-untitled John Lennon rocker was a series of rehearsal run-throughs on June 26, 1968, all of which were erased and the band started fresh the next day. On June 27, six proper takes were recorded with John on Epiphone Casino electric guitar, George on Gibson SG, Paul on percussion (alternating between cowbells and chocalho), and Ringo on drums. Overdubs added on July 1 included Paul s bass guitar and John s lead vocal. Still unhappy with his lead vocal, John re-recorded it on July 23. Backing vocals and handclaps were also added to the mix on July 23 and the song was declared finished. In his 1980 Playboy interview, John described the song as a nice line that I made into a song. It was about me and Yoko. Everybody seemed to be paranoid except us two, who were in the glow of love. George Harrison has said that the opening line, Come on is such a joy, was a favorite saying of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Everybody s Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey is the longest title of any Beatles song. John Lennon Rip It Up/Ready Teddy (medley) - Rock n Roll 75 An inspired pairing of two Little Richard classics is the most unrestrained recording from the Rock n Roll sessions. Long Tall Sally (Johnson-Penniman-Blackwell) Lead vocal: Paul Paul McCartney recorded this Little Richard screecher in just one take on March 1, Prior to being properly recorded, the Beatles performed the song for an American audience during the Beatles first concert appearance, in Washington D.C. on February 11, In a rare instance, two of the songs from the Long Tall Sally EP were issued first in America ( Long Tall Sally on The Beatles Second Album and I Call Your 27

28 Name on Something New ). The initial pressings of the Long Tall Sally EP credited only Enotris Johnson as the writer of Long Tall Sally. Johnson was a little girl that had written some original lyrics for a song she hoped Little Richard would record. She gave a popular local radio disc jockey a note with the lyrics to give to Little Richard. The DJ gave the note to Little Richard s producer and a hit was born. The Penniman that is credited is Richard Penniman, aka Little Richard. Little Richard s recording was released in March 1956 and hit #1 on the Billboard R&B sales chart, becoming the best-selling 45 of the history of Specialty Records. Originally recorded by Little Richard with the working title The Thing. The Beatles Second Album - Capitol LP The Beatles - She Loves You - A Collection Of Oldies `66 and Paul The Beatles fourth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. With a July 1, 1963 recording date looming The Beatles knew their latest composition would be their next a-side: a song then entitled Get You In the End, shortened to I ll Get You by the time it was released. But things changed on June 26, In a hotel room a few hours prior to a show in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, John and Paul sat facing each other on twin beds and proceeded to write from Paul s suggestion. The song they created was She Loves You. The next day, with The Beatles having a rare day off from touring, John met up with Paul in the dining room of the McCartney s Forthlin Road home to finish up the song. The Beatles - When I Get Home - A Hard Day s Night Recorded in 11 takes on June 2, It was the next to last song completed for the A Hard Day s Night album. In his 1980 interview with Playboy magazine John Lennon said: That s me trying to get that Wilson Pickett type sound, a four-in-the bar cowbell song. Something New - Capitol LP The Beatles - Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey! - Beatles For Sale (Leiber-Stoller-Penniman) Lead vocal: Paul 28

29 Originally listed on the Beatles For Sale record label and album jacket as Kansas City and credited only to Mike Leiber and Jerry Stoller, the title and writing credits have been amended over the years to include the Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey! end section, which was a separate song written and originally recorded by Little Richard (Penniman). This medley is usually listed as Kansas City/Hey-Hey-Hey-Hey! Kansas City was a number one hit for Wilbert Harrison in the spring of 1959 and had become a concert staple for the Beatles at their early club shows, so it was a natural to include when they needed material to fill their fourth album. While in America on their North American Tour on September 17, 1964 the Beatles surprised the crowd at Kansas City s Municipal Stadium by performing their hometown song during their set. It was a bonus track not performed at any other stop on the North American Tour. Recorded in two takes, the first being deemed the best, on October 18, George Martin provides the rollicking piano part. Beatles VI - Capitol LP fin 29
