3 9AM The Beatles - Money (That s What I Want) With The Beatles (Bradford-Gordy) Lead vocal: John Originally recorded by Barrett Strong and released as a single on Motown s Tamla and Anna labels in 1959 and 1960 respectively, peaking at #23 in It was a part of The Beatles live repertoire from 1960 to On July 18, 1963, the group, with George Martin on piano, performed the song live in the studio -- vocals and all -- for six full takes, the final take being deemed the best. Although The Beatles involvement with the recorded track lasted this one day, George Martin continued to add overdubs and tinker with his piano part until the song was completed to his satisfaction on September 30, On U.S. album: The Beatles Second Album - Capitol LP The Beatles - Baby, You re A Rich Man - Non-LP track Lead vocal: John The Beatles fifteenth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. The Beatles were contractually obligated to deliver four new songs for inclusion in the Yellow Submarine animated film project. Baby, You re A Rich Man was the first song recorded especially for that project. Earlier in the year, George Harrison s initial offering for the Sgt. Pepper album, Only A Northern Song, had been rejected for that album and was now being earmarked for use in the Yellow Submarine animated film. But with the rush-release of All You Need Is Love as a single following the Our World 3

4 world television transmission on June 25, 1967, a B-side was needed. George Martin chose Baby, You re A Rich Man, effectively removing it from consideration for the Yellow Submarine feature film. Baby, You re A Rich Man was, in fact, two separate songs (John s One Of The Beautiful People and Paul s Baby, You re A Rich Man ) that the composers combined to make into one song. Recording took place at Olympic Studios on May 11, 1967, and the song was completed in 12 takes. It is the first Beatles song to be recorded and mixed for record outside of Abbey Road. Surprisingly, the All You Need is Love / Baby, You re A Rich Man single is the first instance of George Martin being given credit on the record label as producer on a Parlophone Beatles single. Mick Jagger attended the session and may have participated in the backing vocals at the end of the song. Issued July 7, 1967 in the UK and July 17, 1967 in the U.S. On U.S. album: Magical Mystery Tour - Capitol LP The Beatles - I m A Loser - Beatles For Sale Lead vocal: John Recorded in eight takes on August 14, Written mostly by John Lennon. The song style, more autobiographical and introspective than the yeah, yeah, yeah pop the group had previously recorded, was heavily influenced by the work of Bob Dylan. Paul McCartney called it a folk song gone pop. The Beatles debuted I m A Loser on ABC s Shindig program, an appearance taped in London and airing on October 7. The song was performed during the Beatles European Tour commencing June 20, 1965, but was not on the set list for the U.S. shows two months later. John s harmonica solo was a last minute addition to the song, appearing first in Take 6. George Martin and the group considered I m A Loser a potential single and had initially chosen it to be the LP s opening song. 5 5 The Beatles - You Won t See Me - Rubber Soul Lead vocal: Paul 5

6 Written entirely by Paul. Recorded in two takes on November 11, 1965, at the final recording session for the Rubber Soul album. The song is notable for Paul s melodic bass line, something new to rock and roll. Paul: It was very Motown-flavored. It's got a James Jamerson feel. He was the Motown bass player, he was fabulous, the guy who did all those great melodic bass lines. It was him, me and Brian Wilson who were doing melodic bass lines at that time. Beatles roadie Mal Evans is credited on the album s back cover with playing Hammond organ on this track, but it is inaudible in the final mix. On U.S. album: Rubber Soul - Capitol LP Paul & Linda McCartney - Another Day Also written around the Let it Be sessions, this was a similar narrative to Eleanor Rigby, again dealing with a lonely woman. This was specifically referenced in John s How Do You Sleep on the Imagine album. The Beatles - Every Little Thing - Beatles For Sale Lead vocal: John (with Paul on the choruses) Written primarily by Paul between (though sung mainly by John) August 31 and September 1, 1964 in Atlantic City during days off on the Beatles North American Tour. Recorded on September 29 and 30, 1964 in nine takes. Ringo makes his debut on timpani (the orchestral drum instrument), which appears only on the final take (Take 9) of the song. On U.S. album: Beatles VI - Capitol LP 6

7 The Beatles - I Need You - Help! (Harrison) Lead vocal: George Recorded in five takes on February 15, 1965, the first day of recording for what was to become the Help! album, with overdubs completed the next day. It is the second original George Harrison song to be recorded by the Beatles. Harrison wrote I Need You for his future wife, Pattie Boyd. The track is notable for the first use on a Beatles record of what is now known as a wah-wah pedal. George achieved this by playing his 12-string Rickenbacker through a foot-controlled volume pedal. Ringo provides cowbell percussion. On U.S. album: Help! - Capitol LP The Beatles - Paperback Writer - A Collection Of Beatles Oldies Lead vocal: Paul The Beatles twelfth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. Recorded on April 13 and 14, The track is notable for Paul McCartney s furious bass line. The bass is so prominent in the mix that sound engineers at EMI worried it 7

8 could cause the stylus of a record player tone arm (the needle thing on record players) to jump when fans played the 45 RPM single at home. Thankfully, no such calamity occurred. For this heavy bass sound Paul s chose to replace his usual Hofner bass with a Rickenbacker 4001S bass. Aside from the dominant bass part, McCartney also provides the lead guitar, with George Harrison working the tambourine. The second and third verse backing vocal is the French nursery rhyme Frere Jacques. Released in America on May 23 and in the UK on June 10. Paperback Writer made the second largest ever jump to No. 1 on Billboard's chart. It debuted at number 28 on June 11, 1966, moved to 15 and then to number 1 on June 25. The only single to make a bigger jump was another Beatles song, Can't Buy Me Love. On U.S. album: Hey Jude - Capitol LP (1970) **** MIC ON HERE 95.5 KLOS BWTB broadcasting live from the Commerce Casino come on down play poker eat for free! The Beatles - Don t Pass Me By - The Beatles (Starkey) Lead vocal: Ringo The second song to be recorded for the White Album was the first solo songwriting credit for Richard Starkey, aka Ringo Starr. Although Ringo had assistance from Paul 8

9 McCartney on the catchy, very McCartney-ish chorus ( Don t pass me by, don t make me cry, don t make me blue, cuz you know darlin I love only you ), the verses are all Ringo, who had been dabbling with this song off and on since 1963! The rhythm track was recorded in three takes on June 5, 1968, with only Paul on piano and Ringo on drums. Overdubs included a second piano part, sleigh bells, and bass guitar part. Work continued on June 6 with the recording of Ringo s lead vocal. On July 12, outside musician Jack Fallon was brought in to play the violin part. The quirky introduction was a seven-second edit piece of Paul tinkling piano keys, recorded on July 22. A slightly longer introduction to the song was put together by George Martin, but was not used. This 48-second piece, entitled A Beginning, can be found on the Anthology 3 album. Ringo - $15 Draw - Beaucoups Of Blues In 1970 Ringo worked with George on his "All Things Must Pass", during these sessions Peter Drake the steel-guitar player from Nashville was brought in. When Ringo sent his car to pick him up from the airport, Pete was amazed that Ringo had so many country music tapes in the car along with the rock'n'roll, and Ringo and Pete discussed making a country album. Ringo wanted to make the album in London but Pete persuaded Ringo to record the album in Nashville as he knew it could be made much quicker. Pete also arranged for a wide selection of C&W writers to compose songs especially for Ringo, to which end they came up with dozens, and Ringo chose 14 to record (plus a jam session) BREAK 9

10 The Beatles - Oh! Darling - Abbey Road Lead vocal: Paul Paul s Oh! Darling had been run-through a few times during the Get Back sessions, but the first proper recording was at Abbey Road Studios on April 20, The backing track was recorded in 26 takes with Paul on Rickenbacker bass, John on piano, George on Telecaster through a Leslie speaker and Ringo on drums. Paul s lead vocal was recorded on April 26, but he was not happy with it. The band moved on to other songs. Paul would return to Oh! Darling in mid-july. He wanted to record his lead vocal in one single take when his voice was most gravelly. Engineer Alan Parsons: Perhaps my main memory of the Abbey Road sessions is of Paul coming into Studio Three at two o clock or 2:30 each afternoon, on his own, to do the vocal on Oh! Darling. That was a feature of the Abbey Road sessions. You rarely saw all four Beatles together. It was either John or Paul or George working on their various things, perhaps only getting together to her something back. But Paul came in several days running to do the lead vocal on Oh! Darling. He d come in, sing it and say, No, that s not it, I ll try it again tomorrow. He 10

11 only tried it once per day, I suppose he wanted to capture a certain rawness which could only be done once before his voice changed. I remember him saying five years ago I could have done this in a flash, referring, I suppose, to the days of Long Tall Sally and Kansas City. McCartney made lead vocal attempts on July 17, 18, 22, and 23, and his July 23 lead vocal appears on the finished master. On August 8, Paul overdubbed lead guitar and tambourine. Paul, John and George added backing vocals on August 11. John Lennon Rip It Up/Ready Teddy (medley) - Rock n Roll 75 An inspired pairing of two Little Richard classics is the most unrestrained recording from the Rock n Roll sessions. The Beatles - Hello Goodbye - Non-LP track Lead vocal: Paul The Beatles sixteenth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. Originally titled Hello Hello, Paul s Hello, Goodbye was recorded during the sessions for the Magical Mystery Tour TV movie, but was intended for release as a stand-alone single to be issued two weeks before the Magical Mystery Tour EP, and would not be included in the film. Work began on October 2, 1967 with 14 takes of the rhythm track. Over the next month, the Beatles added overdubs to create the finished recording. Specifically, Paul s lead vocal and John and George s backing vocals on Oct. 19, outside musicians playing two violas on Oct. 20, Paul s bass guitar on Oct. 25, and a second bass guitar line from Paul on Nov. 2. From the very first take the song included its 11

12 unique reprise ending, which the group nicknamed, somewhat strangely, the Maori finale. Issued November 24, 1967 in the UK and November 27, 1967 in the U.S. On U.S. album: Magical Mystery Tour - Capitol LP The Beatles - Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul Written by Paul while in Rishikesh, India. In Barry Miles Many Years From Now Paul recalls walking through the Indian jungle near the Maharishi s compound with his guitar singing Ob-La,Di, Ob-La, Da, life goes on, bra, taking the phrase from Jimmy Scott, a Nigerian conga player who had been a part of the London music scene since the 50s. In Scott s native language, Ob la di ob la da is an expression meaning life goes on. Paul created characters for his story - Desmond and Molly and their barrow in a Caribbean marketplace. A barrow is a cart or small vehicle used to carry a load and pulled or pushed by hand. Recording started on July 3, 1968, but would be worked on and re-worked virtually every day until mid-july. In one take Paul accidently reversed the roles of Desmond and Molly in the third verse and the error was purposely kept in the released version. The song went through multiple changes and a more reggae-flavored version can be heard on the Anthology 3 album. George Harrison Wah-Wah - All Things Must Pass 70 Famously composed during the Let It Be sessions. On January 10 th, 1969 George left the Beatles and wrote the song during this period of estrangement. 12

13 The title refers to the wah-wah (headache) he was receiving due to prolonged exposure to Macca-baiting and John and Yoko s antics during the Twickenham rehearsals. The song obviously had some meaning to George, as he used it to open his section of the Concert for Bangladesh QUIZ Ya know..ringo was married to BARBRA BACH TODAY APRIL 27 TH in a place called LONDON in 1981 yer quiz question is. which Beatles if any were present for this wonderful occasion? The stage was suppose to be for a little reunion concert of the Beatles. However, either John Lennon got sick in the US a couple days earlier, or he never got invited due to personal reasons, but he didn t go to the nuptials, so Harrison, McCartney and Starr took the stage. They were later joined by Clapton with a reformed Cream, Mick Jagger and legend has it that the likes of Elton John and David Bowie also joined in on the jamming. The set list is unknown, but rumored songs have included Sgt. Peppers, Magical Mystery Tour, Little Richard and Eddie Cochran songs. 13

14 George Harrison All Those Years Ago This particular track is a puzzle still somewhat unsolved. Originally written for Ringo with different lyrics, (which Ringo didn t think was right for him), the lyrics were rewritten after John Lennon s murder. Although Ringo did provide drums, there is a dispute as to whether Paul, Linda and Denny did backing vocals at Friar Park, or in their own studio hence phoning it in. But Paul insists that he had asked George to play on his own track, Wanderlust, for the Tug Of War album. Having arrived at George s Friar Park estate, they instead focused on backing vocals for All Those Years Ago. It became George s biggest hit in 8 years, just missing the top spot on the charts. The Beatles - Tell Me Why - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: John Completed in eight takes on February 27, 1964 in between And I Love Her and If I Fell. Tell Me Why was written primarily by John and was his attempt to mimic the New York girl group sound The Beatles were so fond of. On U.S. album: A Hard Day s Night - United Artists LP Something New - Capitol LP 14

15 The Beatles - When I Get Home - A Hard Day s Night Lead vocal: John Recorded in 11 takes on June 2, It was the next to last song completed for the A Hard Day s Night album. In his 1980 interview with Playboy magazine John Lennon said: That s me trying to get that Wilson Pickett type sound, a four-in-the bar cowbell song. On U.S. album: Something New - Capitol LP The Beatles Polythene Pam - Abbey Road Recorded July 25 th w/ She Came in Through The Bathroom Window. The only Beatles song inspired by a woman in New Jersey who dressed in polythene (but not jack boots or kilts). Written in India, demoed for the White LP. Lennon 1.00 The Beatles She Came In Through The Bathroom Window - Abbey Road Recorded July 25 th Written while in NYC to announce Apple. Based on a true story about some Scruffs breaking into Paul house at St. John s Wood. Paul wrote w/ Joe Cocker in mind who later coved it as he did with most Beatle songs. McCartney

16 John Lennon Surprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird of Paradox) - Walls And Bridges 74 Where Bless You was an ode to Yoko, Surprise, Surprise was an ode to May Pang. The track included Elton John on vocal and also has an ode to Drive My Car at the end of the song. The Beatles - The Ballad Of John And Yoko - Non-LP track Lead vocal: John The Beatles twentieth single release for EMI, and third on the Apple Records label. The first Beatles single issued in stereo in the UK, it is also the very first stereo single issued by EMI. The Get Back single had been released in stereo in America by Capitol. Recorded on April 14, 1969, by just John and Paul, the song was completed that day. George was on vacation and Ringo was still filming the Peter Sellers comedy The Magic Christian. Producer George Martin and engineer Geoff Emerick, who had distanced themselves from the group because of the constant bickering amongst the group members, were back on board behind the recording console. The single was a complete surprise to Beatles fans. They had waited a long seven months for the group to followup Hey Jude with Get Back and now just over a month came another new Beatles record. The rhythm track was perfected in 11 takes (four complete) with Paul playing drums while John played acoustic guitar and sang the lead vocal. The duo was in good spirits during the day-long session. Prior to take four John said to drummer Paul Go a bit faster, Ringo! and Paul replied OK, George! Overdubs featured Paul on bass guitar, piano, backing vocal and maracas, and John on two lead guitar parts and percussive thumping on the back of an acoustic guitar. The song recounts the chaos surrounding John and Yoko s getting married. Lennon had encountered visa problems because of his November 1968 drug conviction which made his movement from one country to another very difficult. As an example, he was not allowed to enter the United States at this time so the couple s second Bed-In was staged in Montreal, about an hour north of the U.S. border in Canada. 16

17 Paul & Linda McCartney 3 Legs Ram 71 Although not intended, George and Ringo thought the song was directed at the three other Beatles, which proved a dog can run on 3 legs, but not very well. That set made sense to me. QUIZ HERE Name the Paul McCartney & Wings song that has the word poker in the first line of the song! KLOS BREAK WINNER HERE 17

18 Wings Junior s Farm Inspired by Dylan s Maggie s Farm, it is one of Paul s best flat out rockers. It reached #16 in the UK charts, this was also the last apple release for Paul and Wings. The Beatles - While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The Beatles (Harrison) Lead vocal: George In his book, I Me Mine, George explains that while visiting his parents he decided to create a song from the first thing he saw upon opening a book. George randomly opened a book and saw the phrase gently weeps. He put the book down and started writing lyrics. The first proper recording of While My Guitar Gently Weeps took place on July 25, Nearly two months into recording the Beatles new album, this was George s first chance to record some of his new material. George: I always had to do about ten of Paul and John s songs before they d give me the break. On this first day George recorded several rehearsals and one proper take. At this stage, While My Guitar Gently Weeps was an acoustic song, with George s solo vocal and some organ overdubbed near the end that ran 3:13 and had a final verse not found in the final version. This exquisite take 1, which was a demo for the other Beatles, is one of the highlights of the Anthology 3 album. George would continue working on the song at home, and eventually re-imagined the song as a rocker. On August 16, the full band revisited the song, making 14 takes of a rhythm track. 18

19 The Beatles - Fixing A Hole - Sgt. Pepper s Lonely Hearts Club Band Lead vocal: Paul On February 9, 1967, the Beatles recorded Fixing A Hole at Regent Sound Studio on Tottenham Court Road in London. The session was booked at Regent by George Martin because Abbey Road was unavailable. It marks the first time the Beatles recorded a British EMI session at a studio other than Abbey Road. No longer on the EMI staff, Martin was free to travel with the Beatles wherever they were recording. But engineer Geoff Emerick and the usual crew of tape operators at Abbey Road were all EMI employees so they couldn t go along. Prior to leaving for Regent on February 9, Paul encountered a stranger at his gate. The man introduced himself as Jesus Christ. Paul thought, It probably isn t. But if he is, I m not going to be the one to turn him away. Paul shared tea with the man and invited him to that evening s session at Regent if he promised to be very quiet. Paul: He came to the session and he did sit very quietly and I never saw him again after that. I introduced him to the guys. They said, Who s this? I said, He s Jesus Christ. We had a bit of a giggle over that. After some rehearsal, three proper takes were recorded. 19

20 The Beatles - Come Together - Abbey Road Lead vocal: John The Beatles twenty-first single release for EMI, and fourth on the Apple Records label. When John and Yoko were in Montreal staging their second and last Bed-In For Peace they were visited by Timothy Leary, an outspoken proponent of LSD. During their visit, Leary and his wife participated in John and Yoko s hotel room recording of Give Peace A Chance, singing on the chorus. Timothy is even name-checked in the lyrics. He asked John to write a song titled Come Together Join The Party for his bid to become governor of California. Lennon obliged and responded with lyrics such as: Come together right now/don t come tomorrow, don t come alone/come together right now over me. Lennon recorded a demo for Leary, who started using it as his campaign song. After being imprisoned for possession of marijuana in late 1969, Leary dropped out of the gubernatorial race, which was won by Ronald Reagan. Lennon reworked and expanded the song for the Beatles. Break pick a a song listener HERE The Beatles - Ticket To Ride - Help! Lead vocals: John and Paul The Beatles ninth single release for EMI s Parlophone label. Issued nearly four months prior to the Help! album s release on July 19, 1965 in the U.S. and four days later in the UK. Recorded on February 15, 1965 and featuring a blistering lead guitar performance by Paul McCartney. John and Paul composed the song together based primarily on John s idea. The song s distinctive drum pattern was conceived by Paul. The complex song arrangement was highly innovative for the time, and certainly unlike anything being played on top 40 radio. John Lennon in 1970: Ticket To Ride was slightly a new sound at the time. It was pretty heavy for then, if you go and look in the charts for what other music people were making. It's a heavy record and the drums are heavy too. That's why I like it. McCartney said, It was quite radical at the time. Capitol Records printed From the United Artists release Eight Arms To Hold You on both sides of the single. On U.S. album: Help! - Capitol LP 20

21 The Beatles - I m Looking Through You - Rubber Soul Lead vocal: Paul Written by Paul after an argument with then-girlfriend, actress Jane Asher. Initially recorded on October 24, 1965, the song was re-recorded from scratch on November 6, but McCartney was still not satisfied. Four days later, on November 10, the group took another stab at it. Paul s lead vocal was superimposed the next day. The version issued by Capitol Records has two false starts. On U.S. album: Rubber Soul - Capitol LP BREAK 21

22 The Beatles - Twist And Shout Please Please Me (Medley-Russell) Lead vocal: John The last song recorded during the marathon session on February 11, Two takes were completed before Lennon s voice gave out. The released version is the first take. Originally recorded by The Isley Brothers in May 1962, The Beatles performed it regularly in their live act between 1962 and Its inclusion in the 1986 film Ferris Bueller s Day Off sent the song up the Billboard singles chart 22 years after its initial U.S. release. On U.S. albums: Introducing The Beatles - Vee-Jay LP The Early Beatles - Capitol LP The Beatles - Rock and Roll Music - Beatles For Sale (Berry) Lead vocal: John Incredibly, this stunning cover version of Chuck Berry s classic hit from 1957 featuring John Lennon on lead vocal was captured in just one take on October 18, Like Twist and Shout and Money (That s What I Want) before it, Rock and Roll Music is a prime example of Lennon making a previously known hit his own. The overdubbed piano part features John, Paul and George Martin pounding the SAME piano! The song was featured on the Beatles 1965 European Tour and was the opening song during their 1966 concert tours. On U.S. album: Beatles 65 - Capitol LP 22

23 John Lennon Slippin And Slidin - Rock n Roll 75 Another Little Richard track, this was slated to be the second single off the album, but was cancelled at the last minute. This is another track that could be found on Roots, and the two tracks are nearly identical (where other Roots tracks were different). Paul McCartney Party (Robinson) Run Devil Run 99 First heard in Elvis's second film, Loving You, in Paul: "Whenever we used to try and get the words, we'd get stuck on the verse... "Never kissed a bear, never kissed a goo!" We could never get it. At the end, that's me going 'I'm not giving up man'. It seemed like a good idea to end the album on that." Traveling Wilburys Wilbury Twist - Traveling Wilburys Vol

24 The most obvious single from the album, which was released in the US (though without any success), it is a humorous track with a star-studded video with John Candy, Eric idle, and Rob & Fab from Milli Vanilli. Paul Coming Up - Live new band somewhere George Harrison Got My Mind Set On You (written by Rudy Clark) A Jim Keltner drum pattern inspired the recording of George s biggest hit in a decade and a half. This Rudy Clark composition, which had been released 25 years earlier (there is a picture of George in his first US visit to the US with The Beatles, holding a Rudy Clark LP) was danceable, catchy tune. This single also had a very memorable video, which was shown extensively on MTV and VH1. This was also the last time a solo Beatle effort hit #1 on the singles chart. (I still think Paul has another #1 hit in him) BREAK 24

25 The Beatles - Birthday - The Beatles Lead vocal: Paul with John Birthday is a song written entirely by Paul McCartney in the studio on September 18, 1968, while he waited for the other Beatles to arrive. The session that afternoon was purposely scheduled to start two hours earlier than usual so the Beatles could take a break and walk to Paul s home and watch The Girl Can t Help It, the 1956 rock and roll film starring Jayne Mansfield and featuring the likes of Little Richard, Fats Domino, the Platters, Gene Vincent, and Eddie Cochran. The movie was having its British television premiere on the BBC that evening, and Paul lived around the corner from Abbey Road Studios, on Cavendish Avenue. The instrumental backing track included Paul on 25

26 Epiphone Casino electric guitar, George Harrison on Fender Bass VI (a six-string bass guitar), John on Epiphone Casino electric guitar and Ringo on drums. By the 20th take the backing track was complete and the Beatles headed out to Paul s house to watch the movie. When they returned to the studio they worked on overdubs. In addition to Paul s scorching lead vocal, overdubs included piano, drums, lead guitar, bass guitar, tambourine (played by George with gloves on so he wouldn t get blisters), handclaps, and backing vocals. While Paul is predominantly the lead vocalist, he is joined on occasion by John. The female voices heard on the birthday refrain in the middle eight belong to Pattie Harrison and Yoko Ono.
