1 About the Reason Disco School ReFill Welcome to the Reason Disco School ReFill! The Reason Disco School ReFill explores the classic sounds coming out of Disco s three capitals: Los Angeles, New York and Philadelphia. The main part of the refill consists of Rex Files which are meticulously edited and laid out in a way that makes it easy to combine elements from each of the cities. There are also accompanying multisampled drum patches to the rex loops. Each city has its specific set of patches for Dr Octo Rex, Kong, NN-XT and the Combinator. Basically we recorded songs consisting of three to four sections, in three different keys, with a full band including drums, percussion, bass, guitars, Rhodes piano, synth, horns, Clavinet and a string section. We then rexed the material based on instrument, key and song section. In the refill there are six such grooves, or songs, with loops in each. How to use the ReFill Layout The core of the material is divided in three folders, one for each Disco city Los Angeles, New York and Philadelphia (Philly). In each City folder is one Dr Octo Rex folder, one Kong folder, one Needle Drops folder and one Rex Files folder. The Dr Octo Rex folder contains patches with up to 8 Rex loops per instrument type. The Rex loops in the Dr Octo Rex patches are distributed among the slots so that they will play nicely together with the corresponding slot of the other Dr Octo Rex patches in the folder. This way you can build up complete songs with multiple Dr Octo Rex players and change the slots of all the Dr Octo Rex players to play back different parts of the song. In the Kong Patches folder are various patches that play back Rex slices or Chunks from Nurse Rex modules. The pads in Kong trig either single notes, chords or phrases from the Rex loops. The actual note/chord/phrase is indicated in the name beneath each pad on the Kong panel so you can easily see the pad assignment. In the Needle Drops folder are wav files of complete parts of the groove often 2 bars. There are full arrangements as well as Top drops (without drums or bass). These wav files can be loaded in an NN19, NN-XT, Redrum or Kong and be used as fills/breaks or for stuttering effects in your song, for example. The samples are already organized in NN-XT patches for your convenience. In the Rex Files folders in each Groove folder live the Rex loops and multisampled instruments. Each Groove contains loops for all instruments mentioned above; Bass, Drums, Guitars, Horns, Percussion, Rhodes, Synth, Clavinet and Strings. The tempo is clearly stated for each groove, and it is the tempo they are recorded in. But of course, since they are Rex loops you can use them at any tempo. Side by side with the main three Disco city folders are other content, which is described further down.
2 Dr Octo Rex patch naming The naming of the Dr Octo Rex patches is pretty straightforward. We consistently use a nomenclature that states the city and Groove number in the first column, followed by instrument type, key and tempo. Example: LA1 Bass Key of A 123 bpm.drex Kong patch naming The naming of the Kong patches is equally straightforward. We consistently use a nomenclature that states the city and Groove number in the first column, followed by instrument type, Key and tempo. Example: NY1 Guitar1 Key of Am.kong Needle Drop file naming The naming of the Needle Drop files is also very straightforward. We use a nomenclature that states the Groove number and city in the first column, followed by Key, Drop number and arrangement (full or top). Example: 1LA_A_Drop3_full.wav Rex loop naming The naming of the Rex loops play a big part in the flexibility and usability of the refill. We use a nomenclature that states the Groove number and city in the first column, followed by the key signature (one of three), followed by the instrument, groove section, chord changes and then the tempo. This information can effectively be used to sift out the kind of material you are looking for, be it a specific instrument, chord or tempo etc. Example: 1LA_A_Bss_aa1_(A-Bm7-C#m7-Dmaj7-C#m7-F#m7)_123.rx2 1LA = First groove in the LA folder A = key of A Bss = Bass aa1 = the first a stands for song part (verse), the second a stands for harmony variation and 1 stands for playing style variation. (A-Bm7-C#m7-Dmaj7-C#m7-F#m7) = chord progression in the Rex loop 123 = tempo Note that non pitched percussive loops omit the information about key and chord changes. To search Rex loops for a specific instrument type, use abbreviations All rex loops utilizes a nomenclature that normally omits the vowels from the instrument; Bass, Drums, Percussion, Guitars, Rhodes piano, Synth, Horns, Clavinet and Strings are Bss, Drms, Prc, Gtr, Rhds, Synth, Hrns, Clv and Strs. This makes it easy to search for rex loops in these categories without hitting patches.
3 Let s say you would like to add a drum loop to your song. Select Create Instrument (Ctrl/Cmd-I), select the Reason Disco School refill and type drms in the browsers search field. Make sure the search location is set to Current Folder. Now all drum loops in the refill will be listed. You could of course perform this search by way of the Dr Octo Rex device as well. To search for instrument patches, type the full instrument name. If the status of the browser is All Instruments the search result will include Rex files, Dr Octo Rex patches, NN-XT patches, Kong patches and Combi patches alike. To restrict the search for a specific instrument type, select it in the Show: dropdown list in the browser. Drums (multisampled) In the Drums folder in each City folder are multisampled drums as Combi patches and as individual NN-XT patches (for each drum type). The Combi patches sometimes come in two variations for each Groove, with different Ride cymbal samples. Source Songs (rns) In the Source Songs folder are complete Reason songs built up by a Dr Octo Rex player for each instrument type. On the STRUCTURE Combinator track is indicated which song part is played back. The STRUCTURE track itself doesn t contain any music it s merely used for labeling purposes. At the bottom of the track list in each song is an NN19 sampler device. This has been routed so that you can sample the entire arrangement in real time and use for playing back together with the song. Just click the Sample button on the NN19 device while the song is playing back and you will instantly get a sample of the complete arrangement. Select the NN19 track in the track list and hit a key on your MIDI keyboard to play back fills/breaks or stuttering effects, for example! The Sharooz Club Corner This folder contains a number of sub-folders with club-style patches and song starters (here called Club Starters) especially designed to work great with the Disco School Rex loops. The Kong Patches folder contains simply outstanding club drum kits and the Synth Patches folder features a selection of great Subtractor and Malström synth patches. The Effect Patches folder contains various RV7000 and Scream4 patches to spice up the instrument sounds. Instrument Patches This folder contains a number of sub-folders with patches specially designed to work great with the Disco School Rex loops. The patches are mostly Thor and Combinator ones but there are others as well. Note that the sample-based patches in the Instrument Patches folder require the free Electromechanical.rfl ReFill, which can be downloaded at
4 Rex Combi Templates The Disco School Track Combi.cmb patch is a container for Rex Loops with some preconfigured assignments of the controls on the Combi panel. The patch contains an entire song built up with multiple Dr Octo Rex loop players with preloaded Rex loops for all instrument types. By turning the Part knob on the Combinator panel you can change song part on all Dr Octo Rex players simultaneously instant disco band in a box. You can also replace the preloaded loops with other Dr Octo Rex patches, or with single Rex loops, from other Groove folders. Samples The Samples folder contains the Club Samples and Drum Samples folders, which contain all raw samples in wav format. Tracks (rns+record) In this folder you find the Reason Disco School demo songs constructed from the loops and instruments in the ReFill. The demo songs use a mixture of Disco School and other sounds and patches, for example from the Reason Factory Soundbank. ElectroMechanical ReFill Since there are so many great keyboard sounds associated with the disco style, we have created many of the sample based Instrument Patches using the ElectroMechanical.rfl ReFill. This ReFill can be downloaded for free at and is required to be able to play some of the patches in the Instrument Patches folder.
