2 Welcome to... / 3 /SM 67 samplemagic.com At Sample Magic we try to dodge buzz words and eschew fads that disappear as fast as they arrived. But with the stratospheric and sustained rise of producers such as Kygo, Klingande and Thomas Jack, we d be hard-pressed not to give the Sample Magic spin. For us, isn t a throwaway tag for lazy journos, rather it s a label that sums up the evolutionary nature of electronic music. Whilst is a fusion a contemporary deep house and chillout, it also pulls in elements of future house, electro and pop in a way that reflects a broader blurring of tastes and musical approaches. With this collection we ve tried to capture the essence of this evolution, putting all our efforts into creating a cohesive library of inspirational samples that sum up the key tenets of the sound. That s why you ll find stacks of chunky house beats fused with calypso rhythms rubbing shoulders with assorted organic melodics flutes, pan pipes, bells, chimes, guitars, piano alongside a healthy dose of cutting-edge synthesis. As always, we ve made sure every sound has been fine-tuned to be as big, fat, polished and hooky as any commercial release giving you the freedom to get creative with the minimum of fuss. For total production ease you ll see all loops are precision-cut and tempo-labeled while all melodic elements are key-labeled and offered with MIDI variants to deliver you the most usable and flexible content possible. 3 Producer tips / 4 Producer tips / 5 Major Pentatonic If you re finding it difficult to get that tropical house hook then play around with the major pentatonic scale. The easiest way to do this is to play the black notes on your keyboard using F# as your root note. You ll very quickly find your tropical lead line for your next hit! Hybrid Sound Experiment with replacing your synth lines with organic instruments. From classic piano and guitar to flutes and chimes the more exotic the instrument the better! Create interest by treating the sounds as if they were electronic instruments with mechanical-style pitch bends and computerised portamento glides. Why not try a steel drum sound that glides between notes or a flute part as a riser... Reflect Make your tracks breath with reverb. Experiment with placing different style and size reverbs on separate buss channels and feed different elements of your track through them. Remember to not get carried away with the ambience in the track it s vital the original parts still cut though in the mix. So be sure to hi-pass filter the reverb buss channels to carve out unwanted frequencies and save mix space. If you want get creative, try placing a delay before your trusted reverb plugin and a flanger after it and see how it can take your ambience to a whole other level. Swing Adding a swing quantise to specific elements in arrangement will stop things feeling too rigid and mechanical, instead you ll get that distinctive laid-back groove to your tracks. For instance, take a 16th note shaker groove and use your DAW s swing 16th note quantise function to push the syncopated notes back slightly and notice the difference in the groove. But don t just stop there, adding swing your bass parts and your leads can work wonders too simply experiment with swing settings until you find a groove that works. Sparse Drums Getting your drums right can make or break a track. The most important tip here is to always start with good clean samples. When creating a Tropical House groove it s important to keep the main elements simple. Have your kick and clap / finger snaps on your basic 4/4 groove with a tambourine on the off beat. Try a large plate reverb on the clap and tambs to add some space to the drum mix.
