3 Welcome to... / 3 From moody and melancholic to epic and expansive, SM57 taps into the type of anthemic and emotion-charged house music which has become the calling card of labels like Innervisions, Life & Death and Get Physical. Pulling on a rich heritage of classic deep house, chunky tech-house and refined techno, we ve looked to craft a collection of inspirational sounds that move both body and soul. As the titles suggests, the library centres around rich, varied and stirring musical motifs. Created using an extensive collection of classic synths from the likes of Korg, Nord, Roland and Yamaha, authentic analogue tones are found in abundance. In Bass Loops you ll find brooding and evolving patterns tweaked from the likes of the DX7, Juno 106 and MS2000: supremely rich sounds packed with modulating filters and resonance to make the most of their analogue sources. The theme continues in the Synth Loops, where you ll find everything from dubby techno filtronics to retro synth riffs and anthemic pluck progressions many offered with stemmed variants for added creative control. From the Nord Lead to the Roland Jupiter 6 and Korg Polysix, there s a wealth of polyphonic inspiration waiting to be mined. We ve also created five synth and bass multi-sample instruments for those who crave even more melodic freedom. The Inspiration Loops is where the melodic magic combines into ten full-track song-starters. Here you ll find extended arrangements of up to 32 bars packed with broken-out stems for drums, synths, bass, vocals and FX. All loops are key-labeled and precision-cut to slot together seamlessly to create hundreds of unique ideas. As always, all melodic loops are also provided in raw MIDI format, giving you the freedom to select your own sound source as well as tweak progressions to uniquely suit your needs. From key to note velocity, note placement to quantisation, the programming potential is almost unlimited. With the beats the hardware vibe continues. Crafted to be tastefully sparse, each pared-back rhythm has been expertly programmed from a selection of the finest drum machines including the Roland 909 and 707, Sequential Circuits Drumtrak and the Jomox xbase 999 to ensure groove after groove loaded with raw, fat and punchy energy. 5 Producer tips / 5 Drum detail Great sounding drums start with great sounding source material. The better the quality, the less work you will have to do. Whether you are using samples, software or hardware spend some time getting the right sounds that work together. After that, try and inject some human energy into your beats by playing some of the parts, rather than sequencing them. But if you do chose to sequence, try to vary the velocity of hits when programming rather than have everything at the same level. This will help accentuate the groove and add dynamism to the beat much like a real drummer. Sumptuous synths Adjusting the filter settings on your synth gives the widest range of new tones. A good place to start is cut-off and the modulation sources that affect it - especially envelope amount, keyboard tracking, keyboard velocity and the settings of the filter envelope. Also check if your synth has a unison mode or if you can add two or more voices for each oscillator to give the tone more bite. If not, one trick for added thickness is to double the root note of the chord with the same note two octaves lower and one or two octaves higher. Adding ambience To create some nice background ambience try using a delay effect on a synth stab with a long decay and automate the feedback level. High-pass filter the delay return to keep the low-end of your mix uncluttered. Keep your loops sounding interesting by automating a reverb ramp on the last bar. This process can also be used within your track arrangement before breakdowns or to introduce a new element in the mix. Wary of widening Stereo-widening effects can create a lot of space in the mix, but they can also take away from the weight, punch and direction of individual parts. A good way to maximise space without detracting from the sound is to insert a stereo reverb, then apply your widening tool to the reverb rather than the dry signal.
