3 BLUES NEWS BLUES SOCIETY OF OMAHA PAGE 3 CEDRIC BURNSIDE PROJECT Thursday, November 6 pm 21st Saloon, 96th & L Street, Omaha Born and raised around Holly Springs, Mississippi, Cedric Burnside, grandson of legendary R.L. Burnside and son of drummer Calvin Jackson, has been playing music all his life. He has developed a relentless, highly rhythmic charged style that takes the blues to another level. This four-time winner of the prestigious Blues Music Award s Drummer of the Year ( ) is widely regarded as one of the best drummers in the world and has begun to make a name for himself as a traditional blues guitarist, as well. Growing up at his grandfather s side, he began touring at age 13 playing drums for Big Daddy on stages around the globe. I write about my life, my kids, and everyday things. I try to stick to the truth, Cedric says. He recalls growing up without a radio or a TV. My granddad used to play out on the porch, and we d have house parties every weekend. Johnny Woods would come over and blow harmonica, and he d drink two or three gallons of corn liquor. We just stomped up dirt. In addition to Big Daddy, Cedric has also played and recorded with countless musicians, including Junior Kimbrough, Kenny Brown, North Mississippi Allstars, Burnside Exploration, Widespread Panic, Jimmy Buffett, T Model Ford, Bobby Rush, Honey Boy Edwards, Hubert Sumlin, Galactic, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears, and The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, among many others. In 2006, he was featured in Craig Brewer s critically acclaimed feature film Black Snake Moan, playing drums alongside Samuel L. Jackson. (The film is a loose tribute to R.L. Burnside, and gives many nods to the late bluesman.) In 2010, Cedric collaborated with his younger brother, Cody Burnside, and his uncle, Garry Burnside, to create The Cedric Burnside Project. They endeavored to keep the love and admiration for Mississippi Hill Country Blues alive by honoring the past while blazing a path towards the future. The Cedric Burnside Project has brought new life and energy to the blues and it s no wonder why it s loved by fans around the world. Following the untimely and tragic death of his brother Cody, Cedric has kept the flame burning, recording and touring the world with guitarist and lifelong friend Trenton Ayers. Cedric Burnside Project s latest album, Descendants of Hill Country, was nominated for a Grammy for Best Blues Album of the Year. From the Cedric Burnside Project website Check out B.J. Sunday, December 4th The Annual Radio-Thon on KIWR, 89.7 the River on Rick Galusha s Pacific Street Blues show from 9 to Noon. Sunday, December 3 p.m. THE 21ST SALOON Little Joe McCarthy, Lash LaRue & The Hired Guns, Big Daddy Caleb & The Chargers, and The Hector Anchondo Band Admission: $10 or a new, unwrapped toy The BSO will be having a Pot Luck Dinner, please bring a dish. $5 donation for the Pot Luck dinner with proceeds going to the Toy Drive. The toy drive started in 2003 with Larry Dunn an Omaha musician also known as Lash LaRue a friend and a small pick-up truck. Dunn had become acutely aware of the extreme need of the residents after spending time on the reservation. The U.S. Census Bureau lists Pine Ridge as the most poverty-stricken area in the United States. It isn t unusual to see frost on the inside of reservation homes during the harsh South Dakota winters. Food and heat are often scarce. Medical care is limited and without easy access. Dunn also learned that because of all this, very often the children of Pine Ridge had no holiday gifts. Each year has added more concerts and other events, such as a radiothon and concerts outside Omaha. Because of the growth of the Toy Drive, Dunn expanded its reach on Pine Ridge -- providing resources to a medical clinic on the reservation, resources for the elders, including a heating fund, and educational resources for schoolchildren in Pine Ridge. What began as one person s wish to provide for children growing up in poverty became an official non-profit organization. An organization that has relied heavily on community donations to assist the residents of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. See for information on donating and attending these fundraisers.

5 BLUES NEWS BLUES SOCIETY OF OMAHA PAGE 5 MATTHEW CURRY Wednesday, November 6 pm Zoo Bar, 136 N. 14th Street, Lincoln Thursday, November 6 pm 21st Saloon, 96th & L Street, Omaha Matthew Curry s roots certainly run muddy-waters deep, something that s not been lost on the guitar legends he s had the honor of sharing the stage with over the past few years. Matthew Curry is a phenomenal guitar player, marvels Peter Frampton. A highlight from my tour last year was jamming with him. He s the next guitar hero! Echoing that sentiment is Steve Miller, whom Curry both opened for and joined onstage during an exhilarating nine-date run in Canada in 2014 and will again be his opening act for a slew of dates starting in May. Steve Miller declares that Curry is a wonderful guitar player and great songwriter in the Stevie Ray Vaughan area of virtuosity and originality. Besides continuing on with the Steve Miller Band, Curry will also be opening for The Doobie Brothers and Don Felder. I m absolutely thrilled, Curry says of supporting these and other heavy hitters. We have so much fun out there and I really, really enjoy it. I grew up listening to those guys, so to be out on the road with people like Don Felder, The Doobie Brothers, and the Steve Miller Band is quite an honor. Not only does he get to go toe to toe and string to string with some of his heroes, but Curry recently became one of only 10 artists asked to be a part of The Fender Accelerator Tour, a program that provides developing artists the resources needed to get out on the road and spread the good word about what they do and where they can be seen next. Fender provided a touring van, promotion, equipment and publicity to their 2 Million plus fans! While Curry loves it when his band headlines its own gigs, he also sees the opening slot as a way of winning over new fans one lick at a time. Part of the reason people like us so much is because we re not just a corner-bar blues band, he reflects. We re trying to make an impact and connect with audiences as best we can, even though when they see this young blond kid with a Stratocaster walk out there, they re thinking, Just get it over with. I know they re there for someone else, but we re able to grab their attention, so I like to think some of those people are walking away as fans. Curry believes the way to convert an audience is to perform an undeniably engaging set. One thing I really enjoy is putting together a show, he acknowledges. We all have so much fun when we re up there. Interacting with your bandmates or interacting with the people in the crowd like maybe jumping off the mike and stepping out front and singing to them really loud can really make people think, This is so great! Sometimes it s the real simple things that will connect you to the audience like that. As much as Matthew Curry is invested in summoning the spirit of the blues, a commitment that s in full display on the pair of smokin hot albums he s released to date, 2011 s barn-burning If I Don t Got You and 2014 s hard-charging testifier Electric Religion, the 21 year old guitar slinger and soulful singer from Bloomington, Illinois likes to take a much broader view of his style. If somebody came up and asked me what I would call my music, I don t think I would say the Blues, he admits. And I don t think I would say Rock and Roll either. I would actually say, good music. Blues is my first love, but I also love 60s rock like Cream, The Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix. I m also into things like Southern rock, Chet Atkins, and The Allman Brothers. All of those artists are complete musicians. They write great songs, and they sing great too. They re just incredible. From the Matthew Curry website

7 BLUES NEWS BLUES SOCIETY OF OMAHA PAGE 7 Daniele Nicole Band Thursday, November 6 pm 21st Saloon, 96th & L Street, Omaha A 2014 Blues Music Award winner, there s not a time in her life that singer/ bassist/ songwriter Danielle Nicole doesn t remember loving to perform. As a child, she would sing for her family at holidays and took tap, jazz and ballet lessons for many years competing in numerous events. Danielle also took band in middle school, playing the tenor saxophone and enjoying it quite a bit. Unfortunately, she was forced to quit when the family moved to Kansas City and the new school did not offer band. Danielle comes from generations of singers. Her grandmother, Evelyn Skinner, was a big band singer. Danielle s mother, Lisa Swedlund, taught her everything she knew while growing up and listening to all different kinds of music from the Everly Brothers to the B-52s. It wasn t until she was 12 that Danielle took to the stage for the first time singing, Koko Taylor s Never Trust a Man at a Blues for Schools program that her parents were playing at Englewood Elementary. From then on, she knew music would be her passion for the rest of her life. Danielle began singing in coffeehouses and at open mic events at age 14, jamming with her parents whenever she could at clubs that would allow minors. At 16, she began singing lead in her father s band, Little Eva and the Works until he became too sick to play. In March of 1999, she started her own band, Fresh Brew, with Kansas City music veterans Steve Gronemeyer, Steve Hicks, Chuck Payne and Terry Roney. They performed for four years and even represented Kansas City in the International Blues Challenge. It was during this time that Danielle and her brothers Nick and Kris began talking about a family band that would eventually become Trampled Under Foot. Not only did she and Kris have to move to Philadelphia (where Nick was living), but she would have to learn the bass guitar to keep it a family band. It took a few years of lessons and saving money before that could become reality. After several acclaimed self-released albums, Trampled Under Foot released Badlands on July 9, 2013 on Telarc, a division of Concord Music Group. Toughened by years of nonstop roadwork, Badlands revealed a musical sophistication well beyond the band s years. Badlands debuted at #1 on Billboard s Blues Chart and Trampled Under Foot performed live throughout the United States and Europe in support of the album. As Trampled Under Foot wound down after 13 years, Danielle formed her own band and now makes her Concord Records solo debut with the September, 2015 release of a New Orleans-flavored, blues-soul based album Wolf Den, featuring GRAMMY winning producer and guitarist Anders Osborne, Galactic s co-founding drummer Stanton Moore and her regular keyboardist Mike Shinetop, Jr. Sedovic. In 2016 Danielle Nicole also won the Blues Blast Music Award for Best New Artist Debut Album for Wolf Den. From the Danielle Nicole website BANDS AND VENUES HELP US HELP YOU!!! 13 BLUES NEWS BLUES SOCIETY OF OMAHA PAGE 13 TERRY CAGLE FUNDRAISER Terry Cagle, drummer for the Cate Brothers and Earl and Them, as well as The Band has been in an accident and is facing some large medical bills as well as the loss of income for his family. Terry and the Cate Brothers have brought us some great shows in Omaha and Lincoln. Please consider helping them if you can. My father s name is Terry Cagle. He had some kind of accident almost 2 weeks ago, he can t remember what happened to him. He s suffered from brain bleeding and is in for a long road of extensive OT and PT. He is in pretty bad shape, I don t know if he will ever be the same as before. He also has 4 stints and defibrillator for his heart. He was an AWESOME drummer, he plays with the Cate Brothers, Earl and Them and has toured numerous times with The Band. My father was my parent s only source of income besides a small check from SS that mom gets and a small disability check my dad receives. Everybody knows that no one can live on just that alone. My mother s name is Gena. She is unable to work as she has had kidney cancer and 1 kidney left, which is now starting to fail, she also has a cyst on her spine which causes her great sciatic nerve pain and renders her unable to walk at times. She is somehow NOT eligible for disability. They are facing an enormous amount of medical bills plus just day to day living expenses. I love my parents so much and am trying everything I can to help them. I hate to see them both suffering and having no income has created so much more stress on them both. Please donate anything you can to help them, even if it s just one dollar and a prayer. Thank you for your time. My name is Kacy and I m their daughter. At search in medical in the toolbar and enter Parents No Income and it will link to the Cagle fundraiser. New BSO Merchandise Coordinator The BSO is pleased to welcome VEE ANDERSEN as our new Merchandise Coordinator. Vee has been a great volunteer at the many events where the BSO is present. 15 BLUES NEWS BLUES SOCIETY OF OMAHA PAGE 15 Blistering guitar licks and vocals that slice like a whiskey soaked machete. - Toronto Star Gomes authentic voice and the formidable guitar chops place him in the forefront of modern blues. - Blues Music Magazine ANTHONY GOMES Saturday, December 8 pm 21st Saloon, 96th & L Street, Omaha Anthony Gomes, #1 Billboard Blues Artist, is a triple threat force as a guitarist, vocalist and songwriter. Blues Revue Magazine recently declared that, Gomes formidable guitar chops and authentic singing place him in the forefront of modern blues. This, along with his high-energy shows and dynamic stage presence, make him one of the top draws on the Rock/Blues circuit today. Gomes has headlined concerts in 17 countries and has had the honor of sharing the stage with B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Robert Plant, Joe Bonamassa, Heart, Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. Word of Gomes electrifying performances has reached Eric Clapton, Morgan Freeman, John Goodman, Toby Keith, Jonny Lang, Ron White and Vince Vaughn who have all attended Gomes concerts. After experiencing Gomes live, John Goodman referred to him as a pure soul brother and comedian Ron White declared his official endorsement of Anthony Gomes. Perhaps the greatest complement was offered by Morgan Freeman who jokingly professed that Anthony was, not bad for a white boy. In addition to performing, Gomes is an award winning blues history scholar, earning the University of Toronto s C.P. Stacey Award for the highest overall academic grade point average by a history major. Anthony completed his master s degree thesis on the racial and cultural evolution of blues music, graduating with high distinction. Believing that music can inspire the human spirit, Anthony founded the Music Is The Medicine Foundation in This non-profit organization is dedicated to changing the lives of others through the healing power of music. Through private donations and winning sizable grants from State Farm Insurance and CVS Pharmacy, the foundation has funded songwriting scholarships, offered music education programs, and donated musical instruments to those in need. Born in Toronto, Canada to a Portuguese father and a French-Canadian mother, Gomes began playing guitar in his early teens and was drawn to the blues sounds of B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. He relocated to Chicago in the late 90s to learn from the blues masters. During his brief stint as a sideman for Magic Slim and the Teardrops, Gomes put together his own group and won the first annual Buddy Guy s Legends Best Unsigned Blues Band competition in Later that year, Gomes released his debut CD, Blues in Technicolor, which introduced him as a guitar-slinger loaded with impressive firepower. On 2002 s Unity, he accomplished the album s title with a heavy mix of styles leading Bandit Blues Radio to name it one of the Top 30 Essential Blues CDs of all time. Gomes was elevated to the top of the blues field just one year later when Blues- Wax Magazine named him Artist of the Year, an award he would claim for several years in a row due to his endless commitment and touring. Music Is the Medicine (2006) peaked at number four on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart, only to be outdone by LIVE (2008) debuting at number one. In 2012, Gomes received critical acclaim for his release of Up 2 Zero. The album was named the Best Blues CD of 2012 by A1 Blues.com and the Blues Underground Network voted the album Best Blues Rock CD of The accolades continued in 2013 with the release of Gomes gusty acoustic album...before The Beginning. Blues 411 honored the release with the Jimi Award for best Blues/Rock CD of 2013 and it continues to make many Best Albums of the Year lists. Gomes shows no signs of slowing down with the 2015 release of Electric Field Holler, a guitar driven blues infused rock n roll album that showcases Gomes blistering six string work and whiskey soaked voice. I feel like this will be our pinnacle year in terms of creativity and artistic achievement, says Gomes, it s time to turn it up. From HOW IT WORKS Giving Proseeds is easy, automatic, and free!! 1. We enjoy entertaining folks and play a large variety of shows including in this last year here The Omaha Summer Arts Festival, Iowa State Fair, Nebraska State Fair to name a few. Our love of old music and keeping the roots of music alive has earned us fans one at a time. With a variety of Christmas shows lined up this December in the Lincoln area and the release, we were hoping you can run a small story on us? We appreciate the support and love our community. Keeping local music alive is so important and couldn t be done without media support. Our information is available on our website and the link is below. Feel free to contact me. I should mention one of the songs on the Christmas album features another lead player from the area known well Mike McCracken. Mike deserves great credit for his contributions to the local music scene as well. 17 BLUES NEWS BLUES SOCIETY OF OMAHA PAGE 17 ANNIKA CHAMBERS CD RELEASE PARTY Thursday, December 6 pm 21st Saloon, 96th & L Street, Omaha The dynamic Annika Chambers, along with a group of talented musicians, shocks and amazes many music lovers who have the opportunity to hear their music. With a variety of soulful, heart warming, ground stomping tunes, Ms. Chambers is sure to rise above and beyond your expectations. Chambers hails from Houston, Texas. As a child, she always wanted to sing, but her dreams of enlisting in the Army and attaining a degree in radio and TV broadcasting took her on a slight detour. Since completing her year term with the US Army, Annika has blazed onto the Houston blues music scene. With her self-motivated career taking the city by storm, Annika has had the opportunity to work with many of the well-known talents in the area such as Brad Absher, Paul Ramirez, The Mighty Orq, and many others. CD Review Mitch Kashmar West Coast Toast Delta Groove Music, Inc. West Coast harp player Mitch Kashmar has been making outstanding jump blues for decades. With this release, I think he might receive the acclaim he deserves. This is a brilliant cd of West Coast jump blues. Kashmar is a very good singer and exceptional harp player. One of my favorite guitarists, Junior Watson, handles the guitar work on this cd. Fred Kaplan does his usual great job on keys with Marty Dodson is on drums and former Rod Piazza sideman Bill Stuve rounds out the rhythm section on upright bass. This is a superb back-up group. There are six originals and five well-chosen covers. Four of the originals are instrumentals that allow Kashmar to display his virtuosity. I really enjoy the first cut, East of 82nd Street, with the fine chromatic work by Kashmar that reminds me of the late William Clarke. Track six is a song that has a very cool interplay between Kashmar and Watson. Kaplan gets a chance to display his skills with the organ on the final cut Canoodlin. This is a great cd that all blues lovers should check out! Delta Groove also many other acts that I suggest be explored. --A.J. Foyt Annika along with The House Rules Band entered the 2012 International Blues Competition making the final round, and giving her numerous opportunities to showcase her talent. After the competition, Annika took advantage of an opportunity to create a demo CD with Larry Fulcher of the Phantom Blues Band and Richard Cagle, both of whom were judges for the IBC Competition. To everyone s surprise, this has turned into what will be a professionally produced album from Montrose Studios. The album Making My Mark features numerous Grammy award winning musicians and artists who graciously offered their time and patience to make this a project a success. There is no preparation the world can take for the debut of Annika Chambers Making My Mark. So take a moment and enjoy the Annika Chambers experience and make sure you do what she says when she says Shake it for Me! Annika was awarded the 2013 Houston Press Award for Best Female Vocals. She was also nominated in the Best Blues category with several other great musicians of the city. Currently Annika and The Houston All-Stars are nominated for Best New Artist by the Blues Foundation IBC Finalists Annika Chambers & the House Rules Band From the Annika Chambers website
