5 What do I need to do before I come? We ask you to complete the questionnaire that comes with this appointment letter so that we have all the information we will need to help assess the strength of your bones. Illnesses and medication that you have taken in the past can affect your bones and it is important that we have all the information to pass on to the person who will study your scan results. If your form is not completed this will delay your examination time. If you are on lots of medication please bring your prescription list or other information with you. If there is no questionnaire with this letter please contact the Diagnostics Appointment Centre so you can be sent another to fill in at your convenience. (phone the number on the back of this leaflet ) If you: Women from the age of 12 years to 56 years will be asked the date of their last period. Please make sure that you bring this information with you. If your period date is overdue please contact the Appointment Centre as we may not be able to scan you on the day of your appointment. ( Phone number on the back of this leaflet) Need a translator we will need to ask you personal questions that a family member must not translate for you. Have any moving and handling needs that would make getting onto the scanner or lying on your back difficult. Want to share any information that would make sure that we can support you when you come for your appointment. Please contact the Diagnostics Appointment Centre ( phone number on the back of this leaflet) as soon as you receive your appointment to discuss how we may help you. The staff may ask one of the DXA team to call you back.
6 Please note: If you have broken/fractured a bone and have a pot on when your appointment day is please contact the Diagnostics Appointment Centre, (phone number on the back of this leaflet) as soon as possible as you will not be able to have your scan until it has been removed. What will happen when I come for my scan? Please attend on time and book in at X-Ray reception. You will then be asked to wait in the x-ray waiting room where one of the DXA team will come and collect you. You will be shown to a changing cubicle and asked to remove your clothes except for your underpants/knickers, shoes and put on a clean x-ray gown and dressing gown. You will be given a basket for your clothes and valuables which you will keep with you while in the department. Please note: We need you to remove any navel piercings and avoid wearing under wear with buttons or metal/sparkly decorations. You will: Then be taken to a room where you will be weighed and your height measured as this information is put into the scan computer as part of assessing your bone density. Be taken to the scan room and one of the DXA team will go through your questionnaire to make sure we have all the information we need. Be asked to remove your shoes and dressing gown. Keep your x-ray gown on for the scan. How is the scan done? You will be asked to step up onto the scanner and lie on your back and then be positioned for the scans. When the scanning takes place it will pass over your hips and lower back. You will need to lie still for 2-3 minutes for each scan and will be on the scanner for about 15 minutes in total.
