1 Lillenas Drama Presents The Stool From think again! by onet i m e blind Running Time: 8 minutes Themes: Submission, Control, Surrender Scripture References: John 8:16; Revelation 3:16 Synopsis: Kat decides to give Jesus the place to make all the decisions in her life (represented by a wooden stool). Jesus is honored, accepting the seat. As other people come by to speak to Kat, she ends up making her own decisions, despite Jesus answers. Jesus tells Kat she needs to decide who really gets to make the decisions. Kat unknowingly makes her choice by being unable to decide. Cast: JESUS KAT LAURA DREW Props: Wooden stool (JESUS walks on from SR, meeting KAT, who enters from SL carrying a wooden stool, at CS.) KAT (excitedly): Hey, Jesus. Listen, I ve made a decision. I want You to have this. (She places the wooden stool between them, letting go and stepping back, giving JESUS room to accept it.) JESUS (honored): Wow, Kat, this is a huge decision. Are you sure? KAT: Yes, of course. I want You to sit here. JESUS: Well, you know that whoever sits here makes all the decisions for the day. KAT: Yep. I know. You re a way better decision maker than me. I need You to make the decisions. JESUS: OK. This is great! (He sits on the stool, getting comfortable.) KAT (stepping back, giving JESUS room): I trust You completely. I know You ll do a great job. (As they talk, LAURA enters from SL, calling to KAT.) LAURA (excitedly): Hey, Kat! Guess what? Today is the day I m going to get my belly button pierced. I m so excited. It s going to be super cool. So I was wondering if you want to come with me! KAT (looking over at JESUS then back at LAURA): Well, I thought your mom said you couldn t get that done. What s she say about it? 1

2 LAURA: Who cares? There s no way she ll let me do it, but she s out of town for the next couple days, so I m just going to do it. So, anyway, will you come with me? JESUS (immediately giving KAT his answer): No! KAT (looking at JESUS, surprised): No? LAURA (unaware of KAT S conversation with JESUS): What do you mean, no? KAT (looking at LAURA and scooting onto the stool, moving JESUS over and off the stool a bit): What I mean is, I don t know. Yeah. I ll have to get back with you. I m not sure what I have going on. LAURA: OK. Cool. Yeah, just let me know. It s going to be really great. I really want you to come with me. (LAURA exits SL, while JESUS and KAT continue talking.) KAT (still sitting on the stool with JESUS): Jesus, what s up? JESUS (confused): What are you doing? KAT: What? JESUS: Uh, I m one-cheeking it here! I thought I was making the decisions. (He stands up, moving away from the stool.) KAT (moving off the stool, standing to face JESUS): Well, yeah, but that decision was silly. I mean, what s wrong with her getting her belly button pierced? JESUS: The problem is she s going against what her mom said. She needs to respect her mom. And you said I get to make the decisions. So what s going on? KAT (backing off a bit): OK, you re right. I m sorry. (She motions to the stool.) Here. You sit here. JESUS (settling back onto the stool): It s all right. This will take a little bit to get used to. KAT: Yeah, You re right. But I want You to sit here. You make the decisions. (As they continue talking, DREW enters from SL.) DREW: Kat! Hey, listen. I was wondering if you could help me with something. KAT (looking back at JESUS with a smile and a thumbs up, recognizing he s in charge, then looking back at DREW): Um, I don t know. What is it? DREW: Well, you know my granny? KAT: Yeah. She s sweet. DREW: She s in a nursing home, and I thought it would be great to give her and all her friends something special, sort of like a pampering day. KAT: Oh! That sounds cool. DREW: Yeah, so I want to get a bunch of friends together and go over there to give all the old ladies manicures and pedicures. I mean, their toenails are so thick and yellow with all this muck, you know? (KAT begins backing toward the stool with a scared look on her face.) DREW: And then I thought we could give them head massages too, because their scalps get so dry and flaky. We need people with good strong hands who can just get in there and really massage it all out. (Makes massaging motions with his hands as he describes what they ll do.) JESUS (speaking to KAT): Say yes! DREW: So, I was wondering if you want to come help me out. I thought we could go tomorrow. 2

3 KAT (pushing JESUS off the chair with her hip and sitting down): Uh, no. I think I m busy. I can t really do that. JESUS: What? DREW: Well, how about later this week? KAT: Nope. I m busy then too. DREW: Next week? KAT: Busy! DREW: OK. Well, let me know if you change your mind. We could really use your help! (Exits SL) JESUS (again standing because KAT pushed him off the stool): What are you doing? KAT (looking innocent): Well, I didn t really want to do that! JESUS: But I thought I was making the decisions. KAT: Yes, that s true. But those toenails sounded so gross! And the scalp thing ugh. There s no way (She pauses, remembering her decision and standing up.) But, then again, I did say You could sit here. JESUS: Exactly. KAT: OK, Jesus. You re right. I m sorry again. JESUS (settling back onto the stool): All right. This is great. KAT: Yep. That s right where I want You to be. JESUS: Good. This is good. KAT: Yes, it is. JESUS: OK. Now let s talk about that twenty dollars you found the other day. KAT (feeling uncomfortable): Oh. Twenty dollars. Yeah, that was cool, wasn t it? JESUS: Cool? Wasn t it with your mom s purse? KAT (again fidgeting, putting one leg on the stool as she speaks): Um, sure. I guess it was kind of actually in my mom s purse. JESUS: So it was your mom s? KAT (climbing up on the stool behind JESUS): Well, it was in my mom s purse, which was in my house, so technically, that makes it my money. (She laughs nervously.) JESUS (turning a bit in the seat as KAT tries to push her way in): So you stole money out of your mom s purse? KAT (defensively): You know, I don t like to think of it as stealing. JESUS (firmly): Well, I think you should give it back. KAT (moving more onto the stool): Well, I think I should keep it. JESUS (standing up): What s going on here? KAT (now kneeling on the stool, looking at JESUS): What? JESUS: You said this seat was mine, but every time I try to make a decision, you won t listen. KAT: Well, we just need to discuss some things. JESUS: Who is on the stool, Kat? 3

4 KAT (still on the stool): You are! I mean, I am right now, but You are sometimes too. JESUS: Kat, you have to make a choice. KAT (climbing off the stool then standing next to it): Yes, I know. OK. You can have it. (She places the stool back toward JESUS.) JESUS (beginning to sit): Thank you. KAT (grabbing the stool back quickly right before he sits on it): Look, You know this is very special to me, right? JESUS (sighing): Yes, I understand. That s why this decision is so important. KAT (still holding on): Well... JESUS: Kat, is it a gift, or isn t it? KAT: It is! I mean, yes. Sort of. (Pauses, thinking, then speaking confidently) I want You to have it. (She holds the stool out to him. JESUS takes hold of the other side. Both continue to hold it as they talk.) JESUS: OK. If it s a gift, then let go and give it to Me. KAT (still holding on): But I just think that maybe JESUS (interrupting): Kat, do I own the stool, or not? KAT: Yes. No. Well, sort of. JESUS (firmly): You need to make a choice. KAT (continuing to waver between yes and no ): I can t. (Steps back with the stool, taking it from JESUS as he is forced to let go) JESUS (gently but firmly): You just did. (Pause. KAT turns around, the stool still in her hands, and walks off SL. JESUS walks off SR.)
