5 Reference Code: IE/DCLA/Ar/add/101 Title: The John V O Connor papers Dates: [1692]-2015 Extent/Medium: 7 Boxes, 3 series, 25 sub-series, 35 sub-sub series, 3 sub-sub-sub series, 171 photographs and three artefacts. Creator: O Connor, John V. x O Connor, Sean Level: Fonds Administrative History: This collection is comprised of the papers of the O Connor and O Neill families. The papers were retained and collected by Sean O Connor in the course of his work on constructing the O Connor family tree as well as writing his memoir Growing Up So High (2013). Sean O Connor was born in 1938 at 15 Francis street, Dublin. He attended school at St. Francis street Christian Brothers School, and went on to qualify as a chartered Engineer (1971), a Fellow of the Institute of Structural Engineers (1973). Sean also became a member of the Irish Bar (1985), after qualifying as a Barrister-at-Law. Despite Sean O Connor being so called on his birth certificate, he is also known as John Oliver and works professionally under the name John Vincent. He is known as Sean by his family, therefore is that name that is used throughout this collection. The collection contains all the documents of the O Connor and O Neill families accumulated by Sean. Biographical history: The O Connor family and the O Neill family are both well-established families who have lived in Dublin for over nine generations. The O Connor family is the emphasis of the collection. The surviving O Connor family line began with the birth of James O Connor (c.1753). James married Mary Gavin, a direct descendant of John Tutty who was executed in the 1798 rebellion, and these two individuals are the common ancestors of the O Connors on the family up to James and Mary O Connor had eight children, four of which never married and three of which are buried with their mother Mary at Mount Jerome cemetery, Dublin. Of eight of these children, three became pivotal for the modern O Connor family. The first of these was Christopher O Connor, who was born in Christopher left the Liberties to marry and moved to Portadown, county Armagh. The second child was John O Connor, born 1891, who lived with his wife Anne, nee Sandham, at 21 Thomas street, Dublin. The third was William O Connor, born 1875, who lived with his wife Margaret, nee McDonnell at 142 Francis street, Dublin. This William O Connor is the direct ancestor of the O Connor family to whom the collection mostly refers to after William and Margaret O Connor had a son; Thomas O Connor married Ellen O Neill in These were the parents of Sean O Connor. Ellen O Neill was the daughter of John Joseph O Neill and Ellen Howlett. Ellen s brother James (Jim) O Neill, born in 1900, moved to Canada in Another of her brothers, Christopher Joseph (Joe) O Neill lived in Dublin and worked as a Marconi wireless operator on international voyages, as a shopkeeper in the family butcher at 15 Francis street, as well as organiser for the Fianna Fail party. Sean O Connor s siblings were: Billy, Margaret (Peg), Ellen (Nell), Thomas (Tommy), Martha, Philomena, Barry, Rory (Roderick), Joe, Rita and Elizabeth Carmel (Eily). Archival History: The fonds is part of a collection donated to the Dublin City Archive and Library, 144 Pearse Street, Dublin 2, by Sean O Connor, creator of the collection. The date of acquisition is Scope and Content: The collection is comprised of two main components. The first component is material created during the lives of O Connor and O Neill family members. These include correspondence, photographs, postcards and receipts. The correspondence and postcards in this collection are typically between family members. Photographs include both originals and reprints and are of various family occasions and events, beginning from the turn of the twentieth century. The 5

6 second component of the collection is comprised of secondary material created during the course of research undertaken by Sean O Connor. This material includes photocopies of birth, death and marriage certificates, census return forms, photocopies of published articles and printed material from genealogical sites. Included also is the complete family tree and Sean O Connor s memoir, Growing Up So High (2013) Arrangement: The collection has been arranged into three series, one for each family and the third series for both families. The most complex of the series is that of the O Neills, due to the large volume of material. This series is broken into eleven sub-series dealing with births, deaths, marriages; census returns photographs, bound material Joseph O Neill and James O Neill. The sub-series of Joseph and James O Neill are very large and contain a large volume of material. Therefore they are divided into seven sub-sub series and five sub-sub series, respectively. Documents were found with a loose order, based on general themes. This arrangement has mostly being adhered to as it gives a better context to the papers. The collection was arranged chronologically, beginning with the earliest documents of the birth and baptismal certificates of the O Connors. The collection is organised chronologically as this provides the sense of the passage of time throughout each generation of O Connor and O Neill family. Access Conditions: Due to data protection issues, access to the original file is closed in a small subsection of the collection, and in these cases access is allowed to a redacted digital version only by appointment. These files are clearly noted on the descriptive list.
