Using the LAFRANCE The LAFRANCE is the most detailed and exhaustive database you will have access to on Quebec Records. This database gives you access to all the Quebec Catholic marriages from 1621 to 1913, and all the catholic baptisms and burials from 1621 to Every certificate is linked to an image of the original church or civil record. More than protestant marriages from the 1760 to 1849 period and BMD records from 1862 to 2008 are also available in the LAFRANCE. There are 3 search forms available in the LAFRANCE; Individual, Couple and Place. When you use the individual or couple forms, the main search fields are «name» and «first name». The LAFRANCE is equipped with a name dictionary that associates different spellings to a standard name. For example, the standard name Auclair can be spelled Auclaire, Oclaire, Auclerc, etc. Searching for Auclair in the LAFRANCE will produce a list of results that includes all the different spellings of the name. You do not have to search for every different spelling individually. In addition to the name dictionary, the LAFRANCE is equipped with the Likeness function. A likeness is used to link two names that, while being of different origin, are similar in spelling or pronunciation. In the case of Auclair, if the likeness function is checked, you will obtain results for Leclerc and it s derivate in addition to the Auclair results.

Search by individual The search for an individual is done through multiple fields of research, the main ones being name and first name. The form also gives you the possibility to narrow your search to a precise period or parish. Let's do a research for a Michel Tremblay without filling any of the complimentary fields. We obtain 613 results for Michel Tremblay in the LAFRANCE. We will select the 13 th result, the baptism of a child who s father's name is Michel Tremblay, dated March 26 th, 1708 in Baie-St-Paul.

The certificate shows the baptism of Pierre Tramble, son of Michel Tramble and Genveive Bouchar, born on March 26th, 1708 and baptised the same day in Baie-St-Paul.

To view the original document, click on the Drouin Collection record link at the top right of the certificate. You can keep the image by saving it on your computer.

Search by couple The search by couple is done the same way as the search for an individual. The main search fields are Name and First name, which are supported by complementary fields and search parameters. Let s search for a Robert Lavoie couple without adding any complimentary information. We obtain 9 results for a Robert Lavoie couple in the LAFRANCE. We will choose the first result, a marriage between Etienne Chartier Robert and Mathilde Lavoie dated March 4 th 1871 in Montreal.

You will find on the certificate all the relevant information available in the original document. In order to view the original document, click on the Drouin Collection record link at the top right of the certificate. You can keep the image by saving it on your computer.

Search by location Searching by location is limited to 3 search parameters; parish, period and type of document. Let s do a research in Batiscan between 1841 and We obtain 128 results. Let s consult the first result, a marriage between François Lefebvre and Victoire Quessy on January 12th, 1841.

In order to view the original document, click on the Drouin Collection record link at the top right of the certificate. You can keep the image by saving it on your computer.

How to use the Drouin Collection The Drouin Collection contains all the catholic records from Quebec and a part of Ontario, Acadia and New Brunswick. In addition to these main collections are notarized documents and a plethora of genealogy related documents. Images are indexed by location and year or in alphabetical order, and by chronological order (January to December) in the folders. For a more precise index, you will have to turn to the LAFRANCE, which offers a complete index of all the catholic baptism and burial records in Quebec from 1621 to 1849, and all catholic marriages from 1621 to The LAFRANCE also contains Protestant marriages from 1760 to 1849.

How to use the Great collections The Great collections are separated in 20 sections, 7 of which are available by family searching: Petit Drouin, Histor File, Acadian Files and Men and Women Series Joseph and Gabriel Drouin. Search by family in the Great collections This search tool allows you to input a family name and consult every single mention of that name in the following collections: Petit Drouin, Histoir File, Acadian Files and Men and Women Series Joseph and Gabriel Drouin. Let's start by searching for the family name Robert.

Results are indexed by alphabetical order of the first name. To consult a page, simply click on it. If you have some difficulty reading the Men and Women Series files, refer to this image:

How to use the Obituaries The Obituaries section contains 4 databases; Internet obituaries, newspapers, death cards and tombstones, which combine for more than 3 million files and images as of today. Viewing images in the Obituaries section does not count on your daily image limit. The Internet obituaries section contains obituaries, including photos from different Internet sources. There are a few different ways to search the database. You can search for a name, a first name, a date or a keyword inside the obituary. Let s do a research for an obituary with a mention of the name «Adam». There are 361 obituaries where the name «Adam» is mentioned.

Some obituaries have photos, which you can save on your computer.

How to use the Newspaper Obituaries The newspaper section contains obituaries originating from different newspapers. This section uses the same browsing method than the Kardex, the Loiselle and the Drouin Collections, an alphabetical index by letter and by name. Images are indexed in the following format: Name_First name_year_month_day

Click on the obituary in order to see it. You can keep the image by saving it on your computer.

How to use the Death cards The death cards section contains death cards acquired from generous Groupe-Necro volunteers. The research is done by surname, first name or by the date of death of the deceased. Let s search for a Robert deceased in February. We obtain 9 results for a Robert deceased in February. We will consult the seventh result, the death card of Leontine Robert, deceased on the 22 nd day of February Click on the card in order to consult it.

Léontine Robert, wife of Edouard Leclair, died on February 22 nd 1943 at the age of 78 years, 11 months and 25 days old. You can keep the image by saving it on your computer.

How to use the Tombstones section This section contains images of tombstones from about 890 cemeteries across Quebec and Eastern Ontario. The search is done by the name of the cemetery, the family name of the deceased or the inscribed text on the stone. You can't search for a cemetery without including a keyword in the Family name or Text field, but you can search for a family name or a keyword for all the cemeteries. We will search for the name Lavoie using the text field in the cemetery of Arthabaska, Arthabaska county, Quebec. Counties are based on the ones in the Drouin Collection. The search produced 4 mentions of Lavoie in Arthabaska. We will look at the first file, Caouette Marceau Lavoie. The file includes the cemetery information, the date on which the photo was taken and the text on the stone. To view the tombstone, click on the file.

The tombstone of Eugénie Caouette Marceau, born in 1877 and deceased in The tombstone includes members of her family. You can keep the image by saving it on your computer.

How to use Marriages and deaths The marriages and deaths tool contains two databases that span from 1926 to The marriage database offers a marriage file and the original document. The deaths database does not have a link to the original document. We recommend that you do not fill too many fields when you search in these databases. A first search should only contain the family name and the date of the event. Marriages Let's search for a marriage of a Roger Robert. The research produces 100 results. To consult the original document, click on the file.

Let s consult the first document, the marriage of Roger Jean Elizy and Therèse Gabrielle Danielle, September 8th, 1995 in Longueuil. You can keep the image by saving it on your computer. Deaths The search in Deaths is done the same way.

The research produces 41 results for the death of a Roger Robert. There is no original document in Deaths

How to use the Little BMD The Little BMD is made up of 3 databases: baptisms, marriages and deaths. There are more than 1.1 million files in this tool. Baptisms We recommend that you limit your search parameters to the name of the parents or the subject and the date of baptism in your initial search. Let's search for a baptism of a Marcel Robert. The research produces 10 results. Files contain basic information such as the names of the baptised and its parents, the dates of birth and baptism and complimentary information such as the godfather or godmother s name. You will notice the «Search parents' marriage» button, which does an automatic search of the parents names when used. It is a shortcut to avoid a manual research but it is not the same as linked data.

Marriages Once again for marriages, it is recommended that you limit your search to the names of the husband and wife. Let's search for a Robert Lavoie couple.

The research produces 2 results. You will notice the Search buttons which allow you to automatically search for the parents, the baptism or the burial of the individual. These are only research shortcuts, not linked data. Deaths To conclude the BMD section, we have the Deaths section. Like Baptisms and Marriages we recommend that you limit your search parameters. Let's search for a burial of a Marcel Robert.

The research produces a single result. A «Search parents' marriage» button is included in the file. Notice a note at the bottom of the file mentioning that the child died at 7 months and a half.

How to use the Connolly File The Connolly File contains 3 databases: baptisms, marriages and deaths. These databases combine for more than 6.3 million files from the early 17 th century to today. Let's start with the baptisms. We recommend that you do not fill too many fields when you search in the Connolly File. More often than not the names of the parents are enough. We will search for the baptism of a Roger Robert. The search produces 3 results. You will notice the «Recherche du mariage des parents» button. Clicking this button will initiate an automatic search for the name of the parents in the marriage section of the Connolly file. If the search finds a corresponding couple, it will send you to the marriage file.

Let's now search for a marriage between a Robert and a Lavoie. Again, it is recommended that you limit your search parameters. The search produces 19 marriages between a Robert and a Lavoie. You can narrow your search with a date (year) if needed. You will notice the Search buttons which allow you to automatically search for the parents, the baptism or the burial of the individual. These are only research shortcuts, not linked data.

On to the Deaths section of the Connolly File, let's search for a burial of a Marcel Robert. The search produces 9 results. An automatic search for the parents marriage button is also available. Please note that the Sex and Status are not always mentioned in the file.

How to use the Kardex File The Kardex is an index of marriage files complimentary to the Men and Women Series. You can browse it like the Antonin Loiselle File or the Drouin Collection. There are more than different family names in the Kardex.

The marriage file contains the following information: name of the husband and wife, name of the parents or of the previous spouse. In most files, a date or a location is mentioned. Additional information may appear in the file.

1) Bertrand, Joseph Alfred Émile Husband 2) (Bertrand), Antoine Wilfrid Husband's father 3) St-Aubin, Rose Anna Husband's mother 4) Michaud, Marie Lise Irène Wife 5) (Michaud), Joseph Adolphe Wife's father 6) Bernard, Marie Lise Elisa Wife's mother 7) St Louis de France de Montréal Parish 8) 12 Juin 1915 Date of the marriage

How to use the Antonin Loiselle File The Loiselle file is browsed the same way as the Drouin Collection and the Kardex. The Loiselle is an index of marriage files containing more than folders. Inside the folders, files are organized by alphabetical order of the first name of the husband or the wife. Let's consult a marriage file.

The marriage file contains the following information: name of the husband and wife and name of the parents or of the previous spouse. In most of the files, there will be the date and location of the marriage. Additional information can also be present, such as the origin of the parents.

How to use Family genealogies The Family genealogies section is made up of two tools. The first one is the presentation of all the family genealogies produced by the Drouin Institute between 1913 and This section also contains family trees, coats-of-arms, French maps, booklets and other documents produced by the Drouin Institute in the past. The second tool is a database of marriages included in the family genealogies. More than marriages from 120 of these genealogies have been indexed. You can search for trees and other genealogical documents by browsing the Généalogies familiales index in the Drouin Great collections.

Trees and coats-of-arms and indexed by family name. Click on a document to consult it. The second tool in this section allows you to search through indexed marriages in the family genealogies. This tool contains a database of marriages from 120 genealogies produced by the Drouin Institute. It is possible to search by the names of the husband and wife, the date of marriage and the name of the genealogy.

Let's search for a Zacharie Cloutier. The search results mention the names of the couple, the date of their marriage and also the name and year of production of the genealogy as it was produced by Gabriel or Joseph Drouin.

To view the document, click on the file. Use the previous and next buttons to view the other pages of the genealogy. To view the other results of your original search, go back to the search page.

How to use the Censuses The censuses tool contains 3 databases; Québec 1881, Ontario 1881 and Québec These 3 databases total for more than 5 million entries. The search method is the same for the 3 censuses, except for a few discrepancies between search fields. Since it is possible for some information not to have been indexed, it is recommended that you limit your search parameters. Let's search for a Marcel Robert in the 1881 Quebec census. The research produces 4 results. The relevant information is indexed in the file. There is no image link available for the censuses

How to use the Notarized documents The notarized documents database contains more than documents and images from the personal collection of Jean-Pierre Pepin. Please note that this only represents a small part of all the notarized documents produced in Quebec, this collection is not exhaustive. In this tool, the search is done with the following fields: Type of document, Notary, Name, Place, and Date. A search for a testament in which the family name Nantel and the city of Longueuil are mentioned. We have a result.

Click on the file to view the first image of the document. Use Previous / Next to browse through the document.

How to use Postcards The postcard section lets you search by sender or recipient. Let's search for a Daniel Robert in the sender fields. Click on the card of your choice to consult it.
