7 The Autograph Book As An Original Source Historical Document By Carl Nollen Original source documents with genealogical information can come in many forms, including vital records, diaries, journals, and more where the recording of information was made at the time of the event. A child's autograph book became a valuable original source in compiling the history of Silver Grove School near Pella, Marion County,. This was a K-8 one-room country school that I attended, as did my father and grandfather and their brothers and sisters; saving country school history is important to me. My grandfather, Walter Nollen, was a child in the 1870's and 1880's. Very few school records survive from this time, but his autograph book is still with us. It was an inspiration! With only names from this little book of the 1880's, I was able, after months of searching, to find living relatives. How rewarding to finally find photographs to put faces to the names! Silver Grove School was a brick building a few hundred feet south of Walter's home, west of Pella. When Walter was nine, Walter s teacher, Kate Keables, presented a hard cover, 4x6 autograph book to him on July 1, Over the next few years Walter collected autographs and sayings from 38 people - schoolmates, teachers, and friends in the Silver Grove neighborhood. Walter Nollen autograph book given by his teacher Kate Keables A goal of mine has been to track down every teacher of Silver Grove and find relatives or descendants alive today who might have photographs of the teachers or school day memories of this school. My grandfather s autograph book became the only source for some of these teachers. Kept with about 400 other now valuable papers and documents, many from the 19th century, this little book has survived because it was kept in a tin box in a farm house attic, rather inaccessible, safe from mice, safe from house cleanings, out of sight, out of mind. The contents of this box also survived 100+ degrees in a summer attic and below zero in winter. What is impressive about Walter is the number of adults he asked to sign his book; maybe that was the custom in those days. This initiative is what has made this book a valuable document. At least six of his teachers signed his book. Five of them I would not have known about if it were not for this book. With a name on a page as my only clue, I sought to find living descendants. Instead of tracing ancestors, I did the reverse. After a lot of sleuthing, I was successful in finding photographs and information for all six of these teachers. 7

8 The marriage and cemetery records and census indexes of Marion County published by the Marion County Genealogical Society were a great help in starting a quest like this. This led to obituaries to find relatives and where they lived. The Internet saved much time - I use dogpile.com to find people and information today. A male teacher's eleven teaching certificates have survived - dated 1868 to I also found that one female teacher homesteaded in Colorado a few years after leaving Silver Grove. Such interesting lives these teachers lived - known only because of an autograph book! Franklin M. Wright One of the six, Franklin M. Wright, wound up at the Polk County Poor Farm. I unexpectedly found those ledgers and journals in the basement of the Polk County Administration building, which helped to establish when this man lived there. Franklin Milton Wright was born near Wright's Corners, Dearborn County, Indiana (near Cincinnati Ohio), on March 27, The 1860 census shows this family living there, where his father, Milton, was a farmer. 1 In 1870 the family was located in Lee County,, near Denmark, Washington Township, where Franklin was a farm laborer. 2 In the mid 1880's Franklin was found in Pella, where on April 24, 1885, he wrote a verse in Walter's autograph book. 3 An 1885/1886 County Superintendent's book for Marion County has survived which gives valuable information on every teacher in the county, such as examination date, date teaching certificate issued, schools taught, salary, and comments on the teacher's ability. 4 Mr. Wright received a favorable report. Here is an interesting story about Frank found in the Pella newspaper, May, 1887: 5 A lively fight took place at the depot last Tuesday evening on the arrival of the eastbound passenger train. Mr. Frank Wright, who had ridden down in Wheeler & Welle s bus, thinking he would drum up a little trade for the gentlemen, stepped up to one of the coaches as soon as the train had stopped and tackled an alighting passenger for a ride up town in W. & W. s free bus. Mr. John Thomassen of the rival bus line then entered on the scene and tried to persuade the traveling man to ride with him, at the same time telling Mr. Wright to step aside and not interfere with his business. This exasperated Frank and he waded into John in true pugilistic style, but before the fight could become anyways interesting, John s brother, Garret, rushed upon the two with lantern in hand, thereby throwing a little more light on the subject, and struck Frank such a terrible blow in the face that the lantern was entirely demolished and Frank s face was badly cut and bruised. Finally the combatants were separated by their friends and Mr. Wright was taken to his boarding place and his face and hands were embalmed in fat pork and court plasters. The next morning he filed complaint in Justice Kuyper s court against Messrs. John and Garret Thomassen for assault and battery and those gentlemen were arrested, brought before the august justice and fined $1 and $3, respectively, which including costs amounted to about $12. In 1889 Frank married Flora Edith Amsberry, also a teacher. The marriage record noted he was an insurance agent. 6 The 1900 census placed the Wright family in Bussey, in southeast Marion County, where Mr. Wright was again a schoolteacher and with four children. 7 On May 16, 1904, Frank & Edith divorced. 8 She accused him of being a habitual drunkard, and he charged her with infidelity. However, he got custody of three of their children, Vanita, Glenn, and Ferol and she got Clifford U.S. census, Dearborn Co., Indiana population schedule, Manchester Twp., p. 336, dwelling 294, family 284, Milton Wright; citing National Archives and Records Administration microfilm M653, roll U.S. census, Lee Co., population schedule, Washington Twp., p. 451, image 525, dwelling 137, family 137, Franklin Wright; citing National Archives and Records Administration microfilm M593, roll 404. 9 In spite of this arrangement, he claimed Ferol was not his child. It was noted that she had straight hair and the rest of the family had curly hair. During these trying times, several aunts and uncles and grandparents on the Amsberry side offered to take Ferol. Frank refused them. He took her to Des Moines telling her they were going to visit her aunt. Instead he abandoned her at the Des Moines Children's Home. 9 Born in March, 1897, Ferol was somewhere between seven and eight years old when she was taken to this orphanage. By 1910 she was adopted by the R. L. & Mamie E. Pitman family at Farley,, near Dubuque. The 1910 census shows her as adopted daughter, and the only child in the household. 10 The outcast Ferol did not abandon her family roots. She came back and attended family reunions of the Amsberry clan, married, and spent most of her life in Des Moines. 11 Frank Wright later wound up at the Polk County Poor Farm north of Des Moines. 12 The 1930 census shows him there. 13 Old ledgers record him as being admitted April 21, 1926, leaving September 15, 1931, and coming back January 14, He was found dead of a heart attack, March 18, 1943, at a rooming house on Grove Street on the near north side of Des Moines street, which was obliterated by Interstate 235 in the 1960's. 14 No obituary was written for Frank, but he had a funeral at St. John's Lutheran Church. He was remembered as a bright scholar and a kind, sweet man. Frank was nine days short of his 90th birthday when he died March 18, Ferol (Wright) Parker's obituary 16 led me to her daughter in Pella, who shared an 1893 photo of Frank, his wife, and their oldest daughter, Vanita, who later became a writer. 17 The sharing of a family photograph closed a circle which began with a fourline verse, a date, and a name, F. M. Wright, in a school boy's autograph book. Emily Vinyard F. M. Wright, Vanita, Edith Emily Vinyard lived an adventuresome, pioneering life. She was born in 1852, probably Linn County,, where her parents were pioneers in In 1856, the family was in Lake Prairie Township, Marion County,, where father, William was a farmer. 18 In 1870, the family lived in Elk Creek Township, Jasper County, where Emily, age 21, is "home." 19 In June 1878, Emily graduated from Central College in Pella. 20 Back issues of the Central Ray are a valuable source for information on Emily, as her name is found many times in succeeding issues. She was a loyal alumna. The October, 1881, issue says she will teach at Silver Grove the coming winter. 21 Emily Vinyard Samuelson, Dorothy. "Franklin Wright Family." 10 On January 4, 1882, she signed Walter's autograph book with a four-line verse. 22 The March, 1882, Central Pelican noted that Emily has gone to Audubon () to teach. 23 The September, 1882, issue listed that she has established an academy at Audubon. 24 On December 3, 1887, she wrote a letter to Central alumni from her home at Bostwick, Nebraska, mentioning her teaching at Lincoln, Beatrice, and Wymore.25 On October 6, 1889, Emily, of Burlington, Colorado, married William I. Bonsall, of Hoyt, Kansas.26 He was 57, and she was 37. A year later, she bought 160 acres in Kit Carson County as a homestead deeded in her maiden name. 27 Sometime in the 1890's the Bonsall family moved to his home area at Hoyt, Kansas. On August 8, 1899, William died of cancer at Hoyt, age The 1910 census finds Emily living at Hoyt with Stephen Tripp.29 The 1918 Central Pelican list of alumni shows Emily Bonsall-Tripp living at Hoyt.30 Emily passed away on her 95th birthday in Glenview, Illinois, where her daughter lived.31 The August, 1947, Central Ray published the obituary of this loyal graduate, noting that she was the last living member of the class of The little story of Emily's life was written on a bright note, noting that she found enjoyment in recalling events of her early days. Her years at college in Pella, the memorable year she homesteaded in Colorado, the staunch loyalty her family felt for Lincoln. She remembered well the day her oldest brother was killed in the Civil War. She was buried at Hoyt Cemetery west of Hoyt, Kansas.33 Emily's obituary named her three children which led me to two grandchildren, one in Washington and one in Maryland. They gave me four beautiful photographs of Emily in her younger years, an 1899 family photo, and a great Bonsal Family: William, photo of Emily on her 93rd birthday with her daughter in Glenview.34 The two Carroll, Glen, Emily, Mary grandchildren told me also that I knew more about their grandmother than they did. Surely, Emily's daughter kept some information about her mother. They lived together and Emily enjoyed remembering her history. But the too common name of this daughter, Mary L. Campbell, and the big city area of Chicago has handicapped me. Therefore, the best source for Emily's life has eluded me. Loving Mason Estes Reading through my grandfather's autograph book, I was intrigued by a signature. I thought his name was S. M. Estes; he signed the book on January 12, What was his first name? The only Estes people in Marion County didn't seem to fit, and they lived in Franklin Township far from Lake Prairie Township. Then one day I took up the case again. I found an 1894 Estes genealogy book in the State Historical Library in Des Moines with two pages on Jesse and Louisa Estes and their twelve children of Caloma, Franklin Township, Autograph Book, date and verse, 4 Jan 1882, owned by Carl Nollen, Runnells,. 12 himself for teaching in which occupation he has been employed since. 48 In 1882,49 L. M. moved to Audubon County,, and on January 16, 1883, married Carrie Newell.50 Five children were born to them and around 1910 the family moved to Moore, Montana, to be with his son, who had homesteaded there. They built a three-story, six-bedroom house on the edge of this small town in Fergus County.51 On September 20, 1911, Carrie died, not quite 51 years of age. 52 L. M. married twice in his late '60's or 70's, the last time to a teenage mail-order bride named Stella.53 L. M.'s great-grandson relates, "He was a kind man, prone to drink a bit. When I was in the Boy Scouts, we used to meet in the Moore City Jail/Library and look at the old jail bookings for laughs. About every 5th page, L. M. Estes was hauled in for disorderly conduct, etc." 54 L. M.'s great-granddaughter recalls his teenage bride, "I met Stella when I was in my late teens. Great-grandpa was long dead of course, and Stella was in a nursing home, in between spells at the State Hospital where she was sent periodically to dry out. She was 16 when she married L. M. and he was in his late 60's or early 70's. She was a sweet-looking old lady - right up to the point where she opened her mouth. She had a vocabulary that would put a sailor to shame." 55 L. M. Estes died at Moore on October 11, His short obituary noted that he was a man of sterling character and held in high esteem by all who knew him. Once again, I've been lucky enough, with persistence, to find descendants of people long gone and get photographs of them. Reverse genealogy, going from a point in the past to the present. But the elusive S. M. Estes was L. M. Estes, and now I have a picture and interesting story to put with the name. George W. Kimmell Teaching certificates of long ago are notoriously hard to find. I have seen them in antique stores for sale as interesting historical documents. George W. Kimmell was a country school teacher in the Pella area from 1868 to the mid 1880's. Eleven of his teacher's certificates have survived, mercifully saved by his grandson's wife.57 George taught in at least five country schools near Pella. In those days teachers were hired by the term and it was common for a country school to have three different teachers in one school year, one for each term. George was the third of twelve children born to Cyrus and Rebecca Kimmell.58 He was born in Ohio, June, The family moved to in 1854, where the family is found in the 1856 census living in Lake Prairie Township, Marion County.59 Cyrus was a farmer with 160 acres of land. In the fall of 1859, three children ages 16, 11, and 3 months died; a George W. Kimmell fourth child had died in the fall of In February, 1865, the father, age 38, died in a No record found in Simpson College catalogs (which list students) Family history, on January, 1882, L. M. signed Walter s autograph book; 12 months later he married in Audubon County. Audubon County marriage record, Svetich, Barb, great-granddaughter of L. M. The four children and their parents are buried in Black Oak cemetery east of Pella, where the names and dates of all six are engraved on a tall obelisk.63 The 1880 census shows George, a teacher, living with a farm family, which means he was teaching at a country school. 64 On March 3, 1883, he signed Walter s autograph book. 65 The following is a news item found in the Pella newspaper, December, 1888, after George tried teaching in the state of South Dakota: Mr. and Mrs. George Kimmell and daughter returned to Pella from Hand County, South Dakota, last Wednesday evening, after six years of absence. They liked it pretty well in Dakota, but as soon as they had a good chance to sell out, they improved the opportunity, and having disposed of all their belongings they came back to as soon as they could. They both look well and do not seem one day older than when they left here. Mr. and Mrs. Kimmell will go to Peoria, in Mahaska County soon, where Mr. Kimmell will take charge of a store. 66 Another item, dated March, 1892, noted: George Kimmell will not work for the Keokuk Medicine Company, but will run a huckster wagon for J. D. Gaass. 67 George died on November 1, 1920, having spent most of his life in Pella. His obituary noted that he "became tired of teaching and engaged in the mercantile business." 68 He was also the city assessor. Kate Keables Kate Keables is the person who started this autograph business with my grandfather. She belonged to two famous families in Pella's early history. Her father, Dr. B. F. (Frank) Keables was a physician who came to Pella in Her mother, Sara Scholte, was the eldest daughter of Dominie [preacher/leader] H. P. Scholte, Pella's founder in Kate was born in 1858 and was associated with Central College for many years, first as a student and then as a teacher. 71 The Central Catalog of 1867/1868 listed her as a student there in their grammar school. 72 Her education from grammar school through college was at Central University (now known as Central College).73 Her main interest was in music, and she graduated with an A.B. degree in the Classical Department from Central in Her classmate was Emily Vinyard, also a Silver Grove teacher. Kate Keables It should be noted here, that in those days, a country school teacher could be a young girl with no more than a grade school education. Silver Grove School was blessed with two young women as school teachers in the early 1880 s, both with college degrees in the Classical Department. 14 Kate was "teaching at Silver Grove district west of town. 75 Her career as a teacher only commenced last fall but her success was so marked, that she was employed to teach the remainder of the year. In October, 1881, Kate began a twenty-two-year career at Central as an instructor in instrumental music. 76 She was also professor of German and secretary to the faculty in In June 1903, at the Jubilee Commencement (50 years), she gave a speech78 on the history of Central which was reprinted the next year in a college bulletin.79 On June 25, 1903, she married Robert Beard and ended her career at Central.80 Some of you might remember a novelty song popularized in the late 1940 s called I m My Own Grandpa or I m My Own Grandma, depending on who was singing it. Well, the song could have been written about Kate. Mareah Scholte was the Dominie's second wife and widow. Kate was the granddaughter of the Dominie and his first wife, Sara Maria Brandt. When Mareah married the Dominie she became stepmother to Kate's mother (Sara Maria Scholte Keables) and step-grandmother to Kate. Then when Mareah married Robert Beard, he became stepgrandfather to the Keables children, including Kate. When Kate later married Robert she became grandmother to herself. Kate died suddenly of a heart attack in her home in 1937 while talking to her sister, who was visiting from California. This was just 20 minutes after a dentist had extracted a tooth from her.81 I never thought that using the signatures from my grandfather's autograph book would lead me on such a fun and exciting adventure! What started as saving the history of a local country school grew into research that helped connect people I would never have met with their ancestors' past, filling in gaps they never knew about. These kinds of stories and connections are what make genealogy research fascinating and rewarding. To my little friend, Walter Live well, and you will have lived long Even if your days should be few on earth. Your friend and teacher Emily S. Wright Central Ray, v. 5 n. 1, Central College, Pella,, May, 1881, p. 11. It should be noted here that this comment in the Ray shows how unusual it was for a teacher to be employed at one school for all three terms a different teacher each term was much more common. 19 United Spanish War Veterans By Susan Claman The Spanish-American War lasted less than a year from 21 April 1898 to 11 April 1899 although actual hostilities ceased on 13 August Fifty-seven thousand three hundred twenty nine (57,329) regular troops participated, 223,235 militia and volunteer troops and 31,959 Navy personnel (this number includes officers in the US Marine Corps but not officers in the US Navy proper) for a total of 312,523. Soon after the men returned home they began to form veterans organizations. Originally there were several organizations. In 1904 three of the most prominent merged into a single organization known as the United Spanish War Veterans (USWV). The TAPS form included the name of camp, camp number, department of (state), file date, name and highest rank in USWV, US Service (highest rank), Co, ship/regt, married or single, number and age of children, place of birth, place of death, date of death, buried in <blank> cemetery at <blank> with military honors, grave in charge of and camp number. The following is a partial index of the death records we have at the IGS library. All information is transcribed as written on the form. To obtain a copy of the one record (1 sheet, two sides) send a request to IGS. The cost is $5.00 for members or $7.50 for non-members plus $1.00 for postage and handling.
