6 Suggestions for Future Research 25 September 2018 Suggestions for Future Research The aim of this report, as requested by the client, was to trace the paternal line of Margaret Bellum Howell to their country of origin and, if possible, beyond. Findings: The paternal line of Margaret Bellum Howell has been proven to descend from Bryant D. Howell and his wife, Mary, whose maiden name is unknown at this time. Further investigation is necessary to extend this family's history back in time. Suggestions for Future Research: - Examine original records that may shed light on Bryant D. Howell's parentage. This will include ordering any extant marriage, will, probate or land records. The following counties should be the focus of this activity: Henry County, Alabama; Emanuel County, Georgia; and Marion County, Georgia. - Research trip to the East Texas Research Center to examine their collections. Of particular interest are the following books: Passports of southeastern pioneers, : Indian, Spanish, and other land passports for Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Mississippi, Virginia, North and South Carolina (Potter, 1982); Passports issued by Governors of Georgia, 1785 to 1809 (Bryan, 1959); and Passports issued by Governors of Georgia, 1810 to 1820 (Bryan, 1964). - Autosomal DNA testing has been recommended to the client. Neither Y-DNA nor mtdna testing would be beneficial in this case, as the client's Howell connection is through their mother's paternal line. Said client is in the process of undertaking this activity. When testing is completed, the results may help identify matches of those with whom the client shares a most recent common Howell ancestor that predates the nineteenth century. - Limited study of this Howell family's friends, associates and neighbors. During this period in history, most people moved in groups. These groups would settle together, intermarry and conduct business with each other. These groups may consist of either family members, close friends or mere acquaintances. During the course of this investigation, some surnames were associated more frequently with the Howell family. These surnames include, but are not limited to, Price, Jones, Herrell and Worrell. In the next phase of the Howell project, special attention should be paid to these connections, as they may shed light on the Howell family's life before settling in Georgia. 6

8 First Generation 1. Bryant D. Howell was born about 1800 in Georgia. 1 Neither of Bryant's parents have been identified at this time. Further investigation is required and autosomal DNA testing of the client is recommended. A Y-DNA test is unnecessary because the client is male and receives his Howell DNA from his mother. A mtdna test is equally unhelpful because though his mother's maiden name was Howell, the objective of this investigation is to trace her paternal line. In 1821 Bryant won land in the Georgia Land Lottery. Winners were awarded two hundred and one half acres. The eligibility rules, as they may have applied to Bryant at the time, were to be either "bachelors eighteen or older," or a "married man with a wife or son under eighteen." 2 By 1830 Bryant had sold his land in Georgia and moved to Henry County, Alabama. 3 By 1845 Bryant had returned to Georgia and appears to have defaulted on his taxes in Muscogee County. 4 In 1857 the January Term of the Georgia Supreme Court began in Macon and issued a decision in the case of Powell vs. Howell. Green B. Powell, acting as administrator of an unnamed estate, had taken legal action against Bryant D. Howell for "the recovery of land" in The lawsuit had wound its way through the lower courts and the previous ruling was subsequently reversed by the State Supreme Court. The high court appears to have found misconduct in the lower court's procedures and conclusions, but the ultimate settlement of the original case is not known at this time. 5 By July of 1860 Bryant, his wife Mary and their son Pollit were living in Kinchafoona District, Marion County, Georgia. Bryant, about 60 years old, was employed as an overseer and lived surrounded by wealthy planters. 6 He died between 1861 and 1869 in Georgia U.S. census, Henry County, Alabama, population schedule, page no. 165, line no. 28, Bryant D. 9 Bryant D. Howell and Mary Unknown were married sometime prior to 1822, perhaps in Emanuel County, Georgia. At present, six sons have been connected to this couple. However, the 1840 census indicates they had seven sons at that enumeration. It is possible this was an error made by the enumerator or this seventh son died before the enumeration of the 1850 census. It is also possible there is another, as yet unidentified son of Bryant and Mary. 8 Mary was born about 1800 in Georgia. 9 Mary's surname is not known and neither of her parents have been identified at this time. Mary died between 1871 and 1879 in probably Cusseta, Chattahoochee County, Georgia. 10 Bryant D. Howell and Mary Unknown had the following children: 2 i. James Littleton Howell was born in December 1822 in Emanuel County, Georgia. 11 James enlisted in Company D, 46th Georgia Infantry on 4 March 1862 at Lumpkin County, Georgia. This is the same regiment his little brother Polit served in and they enlisted on the same day, though not at the same place. James served the Confederacy as a private. On 2 December 1863 he was admitted to the Ocmulgee Hospital with chronic diarrhea. He was reported as AWOL on 2 April James was elected sheriff of Lumpkin County, 8. On 23 December 1864, he was reported as missing in action. However, he had been captured by Union Troops around that time at Egypt, Chckasaw County, Mississippi, and sent to Alton Military Prison in Illinois. Sergeant Howell was then sent to Virginia for prisoner exchange in February of He was later furloughed and admitted to Jackson Hospital in Richmond, Virginia and diagnosed with debilitas, or weakness. 29 During the Reconstruction Era, Polit owned and ran a grocery store in Cusseta with his brother, James. In February 1883 he contested the election of Lafayette Harp in court on the grounds of illegal votes. On 16 March 1883 Georgia Governor James S.
