In 1870 Richard Landrum BURCHETT was living in a Private Boarding House in Mason City, Illinois. The Boarding house was owned by Sarah W. SWING age 47. Mason City was a relatively new area of settlement as it was only founded in Richard Landrum BURCHETT was listed as Teamster in 1870 which probably means he was a driver of a team of horses used for hauling items. His wife and child were not listed in the 1870 census record. It is possible they may have been in the process of moving or she was simply missed. End of Summary of 1870 In 1875 the town of New Holland was laid out by Oliver HOLLAND. The land for the town was surveyed on 6 April 1875 making it a new settlement and probably the land prices were low to encourage new settlement and bring people to the area. The original survey was only 4 blocks but was expanded to include 20 additional blocks. The first building was a general merchandise business erected by Randolph and company then a Store Building was erected by Mr. Towberman. In 1876 a School House was built. In 1885, the town had some bad fires. On 11 March 1885, The William O'Shea building which contained a stock of Buggies and Farm Implements was consumed. Three Days later, fire destroyed Burchett and Company Building, in which was located the Post Office, Postal Telegraph Office and Village Library. The whole building was lost. Several other businesses and buildings were lost in that year due to fires. 10 Summary for 1930: The Illinois Athletic Club listed at 112 South Michigan Avenue, The Loop in Chicago, Illinois United States is an 18 Story Beaux Arts Skyscraper designed by Barnett, Haynes and Barnett of St. Louis. It was built in 1908 and was frequented by Actors Johnny Weissmuller (Tarzan), and Clayton Moore (Long Ranger). It is now known as MacLean Center, School of Art Institute of Chicago and is on the National Register (# ). It originally was a place which seems to actually have been in athletics such as Swimming, Basketball, Track and Field and Bowling. Up until about 1920 this was what the building sponsored. It was probably used for Housing in the 1930's like a Hotel, but I am not sure on that, more research is needed to determine the exact nature of the building during the 1930's. The Individuals listed as living here in this census look to be all employed in some fashion and not unemployed as would be seen in something like a homeless shelter or YMCA type institution. Oscar Burchett is listed as a Trader of Grain in this census. It is possible he was a merchant who was at the city selling the grain of the local farmers. It appears that after his father died in 1907 he moved from town to town or household to household. I would like to know what happened to his business that he had with his father in the 1900's. I'm going to have to try to see if I can find a local history somewhere and see if it is mentioned and what became of it. Also possibly look in the Estates and wills, perhaps his father lost it before he died or they lost it paying any bills after his father died. It could have also folded.
