Reconstructing Families From the Records

McGraw, Ph.D. January 20, 2019 Introduction In this document the available records were used to reconstruct McGrath and Long families in the Thurles and Cashel Poor Law Unions. The goal was to go beyond just parents and children and push as far back as possible to construct multi-generational families. The records involved in this reconstruction activity are the parish records from the NLI site, the civil records from the Irish Genealogy site, Griffith s Valuation, and the 1901 and 1911 census records on the Irish National Archives site. The civil marriage records are very useful in this family reconstruction exercise since they contain the fathers names of the couple being married. This provides a linkage back to the previous generation. In addition there seems to be a strong adherence to the Irish naming tradition during this time period, at least as far as the 1 st and 2 nd sons and daughters. In most cases this tradition gives the names of the children s paternal and maternal grandparents, if there are enough children. Another necessary element in this reconstruction is geography in the form of the family residences which many times are found in the various records. This piece of information can be challenging, beginning with the sometimes appalling spelling and penmanship found in the hand written records. The IreAtlas Townland Database ( is very useful in comparing the handwritten townland name with the various townlands in the database. The site allows searching that isn t limited to only an exact match. It allows searches with only a portion of the name located at various positions within the townland name. Once a correct spelling of the residence, usually a townland, has been found then the Townland web site can be used to find a map of the townland location ( ) which also shows the townland s boundaries. Gravestone inscriptions and old family genealogies can be very helpful but these are more difficult to obtain and require a good deal of luck. In preparation for this reconstruction exercise two separate transcription projects were conducted to build up families from the parish registers (baptism records) and separately from Copyright 2019 Michael F. 2 the civil birth registration records. These family groupings were sometimes complimented with marriage and death records. The results of these transcription projects furnished individual family trees which were the raw material that fed this larger family reconstruction process. The assembly of families from the baptism and birth records is governed primarily by the names of the parents but it is also guided by the family residence and gaps between the children s birth dates. The automatic construction of family trees and tables from the parish baptism records is a strictly parish by parish process. A certain amount of ambiguity is contained in this family assembly process in that parents of identical names, residing in the same townland, cannot be easily distinguished from one another. An additional source of ambiguity in working with the baptism records arises when a family moves from one townland or parish to another. It is only when the individual families are connected together that some of these ambiguities can be discovered and resolved. The vehicles used for assembling and organizing the family records are a combination of family trees and pedigree charts which allow a concentration of the information. The pedigree charts are used to extend the family back in time and display a reduced amount of information (years of births/baptisms, deaths and marriages). This minimizes the space required to represent an individual couple so that more generations and families can be accommodated in a structure that will fit on a single page. This format was chosen because it allows a concentration of the information, which improves the ability to spot inconsistencies and increases the probability of finding new family connections. This reconstruction process has an intuitive element which is guided by the minimization of inconsistencies among the various records. However, the results are not always perfect and more research is needed to ensure the accuracy of the proposed family connections. It is hoped that this minimization approach will lead to the most accurate reconstruction of these families possible, based on the currently available information. These structures also provide a useful summary of the best estimates of the ancestral names and serve as guides for future research. The diagram following the table of contents shows how the original records were first combined into two sets of family records (church and civil) and were then used in the creation of this paper. 10 The Pre-Birth Baptisms The following excerpt will explain the bolding, underlining and highlighting used when the church baptism and civil birth records overlap and in some cases the baptism date precedes the birth date. From: The Civil Records These observations have been made while searching the civil records for two surnames: McGrath and Long, in two Registration Districts: Thurles and Cashel. Depending on the RC parish, the parish register records available online overlap the civil records for about a 15 year period. Upon comparing the civil and church records in this overlap period the existence of a Pre-Birth Baptism phenomenon has been discovered. This phenomenon is characterized by a birth date in the civil record which occurs after the baptism date found in the church record. Examples of these phenomena should be found in these papers in Sections 1 and 4 (see document description in the Process section of this paper). Many of the families in these sections contain both birth records and baptism records. The names in the baptism records that exhibit these phenomena are underlined along with the corresponding name in the birth records. The date of the birth record is highlighted in yellow when there are matching records (same person) in the birth records and baptism records. Some of the baptism records came from a previous project and are summarized by just names and dates while for some families the baptism records were newly transcribed from the National Library of Ireland site and appear in more detail Copyright 2019 Michael F. 13 Michael McGrath s baptism record in the Thurles RC parish register. There is no church record for Winnie s baptism. In the civil records there is a Winny but no Michael. Winny McGrath s marriage record (to Patrick Shea) showed that her father was named Denis and the 1901 census showed that her mother s name was Bridget. Her existence is better established than Michael s. A simpler cause of the confusion would be that the priest wrote Connors instead of Cass in Mary Long s baptismal record. 135 Populating The Pedigree Chart The Pedigree Chart APPENDIX The large number of generations represented on the pedigree charts found in this paper makes it almost impossible to describe the relationships in a general and unambiguous manner. However, such an attempt will be made. At the bottom of the pedigree chart are the children who represent the youngest generation. On the particular chart shown below there are five generations represented - from the children to the gg-grandparents. The four youngest generations are usually well documented while the oldest generation is an extrapolation from the better documented generations. That oldest generation on just about every pedigree chart will be a stretch that represents the best educated guesses that could be made based on the available information. A typical pedigree chart will contain at most five generations. The process starts at the bottom with the youngest generation which will closely resemble the usual family tree, but with a reduced amount of information. Moving up the chart the individuals in the older generations will be named by their relationship to these children. Therefore in a five generation chart there are: children, parents, grandparents, g-grandparents, and gg-grandparents. Accommodating this number of individuals in a single chart requires ignoring a few individuals, by only tracing out the ancestors of one of the parents on a single chart. At each subsequent generation, ignoring an individual here and there, will leave more room for the others. This is needed in cases where much more information is sometimes known about one individual s ancestors than the other. The large number of individuals represented on the chart requires that only the essential information be displayed. The information that accompanies the individual names will usually be restricted to birth. marriage, and death years in addition to a location. In the case of the oldest generation this type of information will probably not be available, especially in those cases where the names have usually been determined or proposed through the naming tradition assumption. It is still necessary that this oldest generation convey as much information as possible. If the names of the individuals in the oldest generation have not been found in any records, i.e. inferred from the naming tradition or other means, then they will be displayed in italics and will not be bolded. An estimate of the reliability of the proposed names in each generation needs to be made and in some manner indicated in the pedigree chart itself. The reasons for the variation in the reliabilities are dependent on the ability to determine the names of all the children in the family. This can be difficult when the marriage has taken place prior to the commencement of the parish registers for that locality. 136 from that marriage are close enough to the marriage date then it can be reasonably assumed that there are no missing children on the front end. In the family tree case shown on the following page the vertical line extending to the predicted name of the individual is a solid line. If there is some uncertainty that all the baptism records have been found then a dotted vertical line is extended to the predicted name of the individual. The basic problem plaguing the use of the pedigree chart and the cause of difficulties in trying to explain its use lies with the relatives and their multiple relationships within the family, ie. one person s grandfather is another s father. This labeling all depends on the individual s point of reference. The only way around this multi-reference problem is to pick a basic reference point and then use it throughout the construction of the pedigree chart. In this paper the children in the youngest generation are chosen as that basic reference point. All the other individuals in the chart are described by their relationship to this youngest generation. This is most easily understood by studying the diagram shown below. Within each parish the families are organized into separate tables for male and female parents of the selected surname. In Clonoulty RC parish, for example, there is one set of tables for male McGraths and a separate set of tables for female McGraths. An individual family tree was created for each family that had four or more baptism records. Within one set of tables the families are organized by the given name of the McGrath parents. For a given McGrath first name the families are ordered within the table by the date of the first baptism for each family. This provides an approximate chronological order within the table. The goal of this exercise is to create larger families by combining the earlier constructed individual families described in the previous paragraph. This process is guided by assuming that (1) families used the naming tradition: 1 st born son and daughter are named after the paternal grandparents and the 2 nd born son and daughter are named after the maternal grandparents; (2) the fathers age is compatible with its placement; (3) the families are geographically close.
