1 Day 1: Introduction (1) Distribute Road Trip Folders to each student with envelop inside with; *Index Card: Budget of $3,500 *Print out of car type with MPG and gas price *Index card with websites laminated (mapquest, hotels, expedia, tripadvisor) *Driving Hours Index card *Map of US (2) What do you think we can do with this information? (3) Make Chart; COST OF A ROAD TRIP. Student discussion (fuel, food, hotels, activities, shopping) (4) Divide into teams by finding the people with the same car in their envelope (5) First decision to make as a team What is the maximum number of hours a day are you willing to drive? -Think about what time you are willing to get up and start the journey. Write it on the bank index card -Think about the latest you are willing to dive in a day. Write it on the index card. *Find the total number of hours you are willing to drive (elapsed time) and write it down. (6) Whole group plan day 1; distribute day 1 planning sheet. *Write START ADDRESS-write time you will start your trip *Tell them to know our end address, we have to know where we are going AND staying! *We are going to Nags Head, NC *Direct them to type in hotels.cominto web browser lead them through picking a hotel *Direct them to open new page, type in mapquest.com lead them through route planner *Record END ADDRESS and have them find an ETA *Walk through finding fuel cost (7) Plan out activities for your stay *If we arrive Monday and leave on Wednesday, how many full days will we have? How many activities can we do in just 1 day? *Direct students to go to tripadvisor- lead though finding activities. Day 2: Release of Responsibility Today you and your partner and going to plan out the next 3 days of your trip. Your next location MUST be in the south eastregion of the US. You can visit any state within that area. You will follow the same steps as yesterday. *Do we know our start address? (yes, we are starting at the hotel) *How will we find our end address? (pick a location and find a hotel) *What are different ways we use the 3 days? TRAVEL, TRAVEL & EXPLORE, EXPLORE/LEAVE TRAVEL, EXPLORE, LEAVE 10 minutes, look at the map of the US and decide as a group where you want to go. 3 Day 3: Release of Responsibility Today you and your partner and going to plan out the next 3 days of your trip. Your next location MUST be in the south westregion of the US. You can visit any state within that area. You will follow the same steps as yesterday. *Scaffold and help students who are struggling, allow students who are understanding to go to next part OH NO!! Your got a flat tire and need to go to a repair shop (add to your activity log) and pay $200! Remember to fill in each section of the planning sheet Journal prompt (solo): Write a letter to a friend or family member describing your trip so far. Day 4: Release of Responsibility Today you and your partner and going to plan out the next 3 days of your trip. Your next location MUST be in the mid-west region of the US. You can visit any state within that area. You will follow the same steps as yesterday. *Scaffold and help students who are struggling, allow students who are understanding to go to next part OH NO! You hit 2 hours of traffic on your way to your destination! Add $12 of fuel cost to your total Remember to fill in each section of the planning sheet Journal prompt (solo): How did you pass the time in the car while you sat in traffic to entertain each other?

4 Day 5: SOLO WORK Today you and your partner and going to plan out the next 3 days of your trip. Your next location MUST get you back to our school. You can visit somewhere along the way, but by the end of day 3 you must be back at school! *Scaffold and help students who are struggling, allow students who are understanding to go to next part Remember to fill in each section of the planning sheet Journal prompt (solo): You are at the end of the trip. Write an essay that describes 2 things you LIKED about this project and 1 thing you would change for next time. FINAL PROJECT: Use google slides to create a presentation of your trip. Your slides should include information from each leg of the trip, and include images found from the internet of the places you visited. *Show some examples and have students explain what they like or dislike about the slides.
