PRIDE AND PREJUDICE Jane Austen, the Victorian Age and the birth of the modern novel
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2009 WORD OF THE DAY: INFER Essential?: Why were social gatherings so essential in the Victorian Era? WOD Organizer - Infer Explain Mind Maps (Rubrics & Examples) HW: Finish notes from Scavenger Hunt Mind Maps will be created in class tomorrow. Online Scavenger Hunt What were their ideas about the following topics: Dances and Balls Love and marriage Etiquette Life in the Gentry Materials Needed: Pen/Pencil Notebooks (3-ring binder) Laptops Must sign out & in
MIND MAPS Mind Map: a large spatial and semi-artistic arrangement of information designed to display a complex concept, phenomena, or time period. It is more comprehensive and displays a larger breadth of information than a regular web. Purpose: Research demonstrates that spatially arranging information and designating intellectual purpose to artistic expression increases understanding and retention. In addition, it allows one to extract main ideas, identify important concepts and information, and display it graphically. Instructions: Draft your mind map on normal paper. Use colored writing utensils to spatially arrange information purposefully. Doodle little graphics and signs to help you remember certain concepts and ideas. General Guidelines: Be logical in the progression outwards from the center, with main ideas as the major branches and more specific information branching off. Choose colors purposefully Doodle purposefully Command vocabulary and details
MIND MAP RUBRIC possible points expectations specifics Centered around time period 3 Clarity 3 Artistry Logical progression from center outward Purposeful use of color Purposeful use of doodling and art 4 Comprehensiveness Includes major information Uses information from websites as well as notes 10 = 100 A+ 9 = 90 A 8 = 80 B 7 = 70 C 6 = 60 D 5 or less = REDO

Dances and Balls: ONLINE SCAVENGER HUNT THE VICTORIAN ERA Love and Marriage: Etiquette: Life in the Gentry: Miscellaneous:
TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 22, 2009 Essential?: How can important concepts in the Victorian Era be visualized? No Word of the Day Create a Mind Map for a young man or woman of the Victorian Era. Follow the rubrics discussed yesterday. Maps should be colorful and created on the provided large white paper. You must finish in class. I do not want this to be taken home. Place papers on the table by the couch. Materials Needed: Large white paper Colored pencils Notes from scavenger hunt
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2009 Essential?: How does prior knowledge of the Victorian Era help to explain Austen s writing? Word of the Day: Quick Write: Austen s Popularity Venn Diagram: Marriage PP: Notes on Jane Austen Materials Needed: Pen/Pencil Notebook (3 ring binder)
MODELING THE QUICK WRITE: AUSTEN S POPULARITY Although its setting and characters are certainly dated, Pride and Prejudice has remained a popular novel since its publication in Why do you think it has retained its popularity?
POSSIBLE ANSWERS: A great love story with twists and turns and obstacles; with the right girl and the right boy ending up together. In addition to the multifaceted Elizabeth and Darcy, the novel presents stock characters we all understand (the interfering, well intentioned but ridiculously foolish mother, the pompous moron, the snobbish elite, and the scoundrel).
VENN DIAGRAM Victorian view of marriage Modern view of marriage Your view of marriage
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 24, 2009 Essential?: What elements of stock characters can be found in Pride and Prejudice? WOD: Discuss Characters of Pride and Prejudice Redo Character Logs for additional points PP: Notes on Characterization Model and create a stock character Identify 5 Stock characters in film 3 column notes making inferences Materials Needed: Pen/Pencil Notebook (3-ring binder) Character Logs
FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 25, 2009 Essential?: What elements of stock characters can be found in Pride and Prejudice? WOD: Discuss Characters of Pride and Prejudice Redo Character Logs for additional points PP: Notes on Characterization Model and create a stock character Identify 5 Stock characters in film 3 column notes making inferences Materials Needed: Pen/Pencil Notebook (3-ring binder) Character Logs
JOURNAL RESPONSE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS The title of Jane Austen s first draft of Pride and Prejudice was First Impressions. When you meet someone new, are your first impressions likely to prove accurate? What are first impressions based upon? Make a list and then discuss the value or reliability of the items on the list. Do we ever meet someone new without prejudging him or her in some way?
