Design Challenge Participant s Guide Is it art? Is it engineering? 3Doodler EDU The Challenge Using 3Doodler and plastic strands, explore making and defining where the line between art and engineering blur. Good luck and get Doodling! Page 1 of 7

Challenge Tip Look at the differences between the hand- made and the machine made through us- ing objects created through 3D printing and then replicate it freehand using the 3Doodler pen. How was the process different? Did one feel more like engineering or art over the other? How is the 3Doodler an introduction to 3D printing? Challenge Background Technomad Steven K. Roberts once said, Art without engineering is dreaming. Engi- neering without art is calculating. famous for spending 8 years peddling 17,000 miles across the United States on a computerized and networked bicycle. The American artist Alexander Calder stated, To an engineer, good enough means perfect. With an artist, there s no such thing as perfect. Calder was known for making the first 3-dimensional line drawings using wire to make mobiles. Where is the art and engineering line drawn for you? For more information on Steven K Roberts go to For more information on Alexander Calder go to Page 2 of 7

Before You Start Doodling Similar to 3D printing it is useful to have a plastic founda- tion for doodling. Scotch tape placed over a piece of pa- per or a paper pattern makes a quick plastic foundation. Clear plastic place mats, plexi glass or plastic laminate surfaces are great as a reusable alternative. Materials & Tools Determine the number of participants and gather all of the materials and tools prior to the challenge. A. One 3Doodler Pen per person and plastic strands of various colors B. Tweezers, needle-nose pliers, small screwdriver, and scissors for cutting strands. Provide one set per table C. Engineered, 3-d printed and/or objects with moving parts. D. Clear plastic tape or plastic mat for doodling foundation E. Letter size paper for drawing patterns F. Pens or pencils G. Camera or video recording device to document the challenge Page 3 of 7

Challenge Organization This challenges are organized into 50 minute periods with a homework section. This challenge is designed to have you work in short sprints to quickly explore the concept. Challenge Documentation Create a video before and after the challenge discussing whether you identify as an engineer or an artist. See if your opinion changed as a result of the challenge. Share your experiences on a blog or social media page. Class 1 (50 minutes): Investigate, Plan & Build Investigate: 50 minutes Step 1: Write on sticky notes the answers to the following questions and post on the wall: What makes something art? What makes something engineering? Why would you see art and engineering as separate or compatible? Would you rather be an artist or an engineer? Why? Step 2: Discuss with the group if your opinions and thoughts. Page 4 of 7

Design: 15 minutes Step 1:Look over two small 3-dimensional objects. Object A can be a solid object like a chess piece or a utensil and Object B can be an object with moving parts like a pair of glasses or a tape dispenser. Choose objects from your daily life or look for patterns provided through the 3Doodler.com. Step 2:Review and identify Object A s lines, planes, shapes and mass. Step 3: Use graph paper to make a drawing that breaks the first object down into a few manageable pieces that you will make with the 3Doodler pen and strands. Build: 25 minutes Using 3Doodler pens and strands, have participants craft a 3doodled drawing version of Object A. Page 5 of 7

Homework: Design (20 Minutes) Step 1: Have participants either review and identify Object B s lines, planes, shapes and mass. Step 2: Use graph paper to make a drawing that breaks Object B down into a few manageable pieces that you will make with the 3Doodler pen and strands during class 2. Step 3: Decide how you will make this object artistic through adding or subtracting new features, changing or combining colors and shapes. Below is an example using an existing pair of glasses with an image of a 3-D printed version and an image of a 3Doodler version. Page 6 of 7

Class 2: Build, Present & Discuss (50 minutes) Build: 35 minutes Step 1: Using the plan for Object B and 3Doodler pens and strands, craft a 3Doodled drawing version of Object B. Step 2: Add features that turns that object into something artistic. Present & Discuss 15 minutes Step 1: Explore the following questions and write your thoughts below: How did you think differently when you were drafting a simple object as compared to a complex object? Which feels more like art: the original object or your recreated objects using the 3Doodler? What could make your piece feel more like art or more like engineering? Step 2: Present Objects A and B. Use the I like, I wonder and I wish method to have participants provide feedback to each other. Step 3: Discuss the anwers to the questions above with the group. Page 7 of 7
