1 Fire Investigation Tools V10.6 Introduction The FARO CAD Zone diagram program has the tools you need to create a 2D and 3D fire scene diagram with data collected from hand measurements, a total station, or your laser scanner. Mapping the fire damage of a room or building is a challenging job. Using a laser scanner can greatly reduce the time on-scene while still collecting essential data needed for a thorough fire investigation. Diagrams play a big role in fire investigation and the tools found in the FARO CAD Zone diagram program makes that job faster and easier. Diagram and analyze the scene with your measured data, creating: 2D wall elevation views Show fire damage to furniture and other symbols Show char and smoke patterns Show char depth topography Show the spread of the heat or flame Show the fire area and point of origin Insert photos Create site and floor plans Once you ve completed your real world scale diagram, you can print or create a.pdf file of your work. 3 V10.6 Fire Investigation Tools Symbol Damage Tool Apply burn damage any symbol. The damage will be displayed in 2D and 3D Pre-select the symbol to apply damage to. 4 2. Click on the Symbol Damage tool located in EZ Tools. 3. The Symbol Damage dialog will pop up showing a 2D and 3D view of the symbol. Symbol Damage Features: [1] Pick the side of the symbol to place the damage pattern. [2] Purple (end) handle to resize damage length. [3] Puple (middle handle to move damage pattern. [4]Purple (end) handle to resize damage length. [5] thru [10] green handles to change damage width. [11] Overall Length display. [12] Set 3D symbol color and height. [13] Show damage in 3D checkbox. [14] Reset Damage pattern. [15] Click OK to apply damage to the symbol and close the dialog. 4. Click OK to see the damage pattern displayed in 2D and 3D. 5 Wall Elevation Builder Quickly create 2D wall elevation views of a room from your point cloud data with the Wall Elevation Builder tool. Draw on a wall in the point cloud using points, lines, arcs, circles, and curves and then project them onto a 2D wall elevation in the diagram. 6 NOTE: Before you can use the Wall Elevation Builder tool you need to have the following: A 3D wall created with the 3D Builder tool from a line or continuous line. Points, lines, arcs, curves, or circle data that has been drawn on the wall by tracing over the point cloud. Potentially doors and windows place using the Doors/Windows tool. 1. Trace a wall or walls in the point cloud. a. We want the walls to be flat on the ground. b. In CZ Point Cloud turn 2D Trace mode ON. c. Draw a line around the point cloud. 7 2. Turn the outline into 3D walls. a. Select the wall line. b. Click on the 3D Builder tool. c. Set a Wall Height. 3. Draw on the wall in the point cloud using the CZ Point Cloud tools. FARO Technologies 4790 SW Watson Ave Beaverton, OR Page 7

8 4. Click on the Wall Elevation Builder tool located in EZ Tools. 5. You will be prompted to select the 3D data to project to the wall. Select by clicking on the data or dragging a window around the data. Remember you can add to the data by making multiple selections while holding down the Shift key. 12 Char Depth Trace the char patterns in the point cloud and label different char depths. In this example the char depths were measured on exposed ceiling joists. 13 Fire Investigation Symbols There are thousands of symbols to choose from in the Fire, Insurance, Crime, and Crash Zone programs. Everything you ll need from vehicles, furniture, fixtures, and evidence placard symbols can all be found in the Symbol Manager. A special group of fire investigation symbols can be found in the Fire Inv folder in the Fire and Investigation symbol groups. In the Crime/Crash Zone under the Crime symbols group.
