Using line graphing procedures, demonstrate line graphing. After demonstration, have students practice graphing 2 given equations (handout). Five minutes practice is allowed. Give each student a progress check. Have each student graph one equation on graph paper. Evaluate using the given AETC Form 98. 2 PART II - TEACHING GUIDE INTRODUCTION ( 2 Min ) ATTENTION: REVIEW: Who has taken Algebra? How long has it been since you ve seen an equation let alone graphed one? NONE MOTIVATION: Most line graphing can be done using software now, but there is no way to know if it s accurate unless you can do it by hand. For those of you who haven t taken Algebra yet, this will give you a bit of a head start. OVERVIEW: Slide Given a standard linear equation and necessary materials, graph a line with no instructor assists. (1) Use (2) Definitions (3) Materials (4) Line Graphing Procedures TRANSITION: Let s first discuss the use of line graphing. 8-2

3 BODY ( 27 Min) PRESENTATION: 1. Graphing Linear Equations a. Given a standard linear equation and necessary materials, graph a line with no more than two instructor assists. (1) Use shows relationship between two entities EXPLANATION (5 Min) S S S This is the effect one entity has on another. TRANS: Now let s define some key terms (2) Definitions (a) linear equation S Variables to the 1 st power (b) variables and constants (c) graph (d) intercepts Show graph axes Describe x and y intercepts TRANS: Let s look at the materials we ll be using. (3) Materials (a) graph paper (b) pencil TRANS: Now I ll show you how to graph lines given a standard linear equation. 8-3

Let y=0 and solve for x Over x and up/down y (x,y) Where line crosses y axis. Let x=0 and solve for y Over x and up/down y (x,y) Draw straight line through both points. APPLICATION: (SUPERVISION) TRANS: Using the graph paper provided, practice graphing technique. PERFORMANCE: (5 Min) a. Given a standard linear equation and necessary materials, graph a line with no more than two instructor assists. Distribute graphs/pencils (Students practice) (1) Students will practice graphing lines. (2) Observe and supervise (3) Critique as necessary EVALUATION: (1) Evaluate each student using AETC Form 98.
