Monday, September 6, I965 PRESS PREVIEW: Friday, September 3, a.m. - k p.m. the Museum of Modern Art continues this year's surveys of additions to the drawing collection with Uh DRAWINGS: REGENT ACQUISITIONS which opens September 6 in the Paul J. Sachs Galleries for Drawings and Prints. The selection includes work dating from 1882 to 196^ by 33 artists from Austria, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Guatemala, Italy, Spain and the United States. The exhibition is directed by William S. Lieberman, Curator of Drawings and Prints. More than half the drawings were executed since i960, and these by Italian and American artists* Paolo Guiotto, who lives in Rome, was born in 1936 and seven of the American draughstmen are still in their early thirties. Two drawings, however, were done before 1900: Odilon Redon's The Eve Like a Strange Balloon Mounts Toward Infinity, dedicated to Edgar Poe, and Kupka's Bather. an informal summary of the curvilinear style of art nouveau. The exhibition contains portraits by Baskin, Corinth, Dobkin, Kirchner, Pickhardt and Moses Soyer as well as an unpublished self portrait by Matisse at the age of seventy-six. Gonzales and Nakian. Drawings by several sculptors include studies by Rodin, Calder, Corinth, Feininger, Gross, Kubln and Gene Vass are represented by more than one example. One of the most impressive works in the exhibition is a large, hallucinatory composition by the Guatemalan artist Rodolfo Abularach which measures eight feet high. The drawing by Balthus is, perhaps, his most Important. In his comments to the exhibition, Mr. Lieberman observes, "Three close friends of the Museum, each Intimately concerned with its Department of Drawings and Prints, died during the past year: Paul J. Sachs, in whose honor these galleries are named, John 8* Newberry and Victor S. Riesenfeld. Their last gifts to the Museum appear here."

2 0&> -2- (95) Some 25 other recent acquisitions of drawings were included in the John S. Newberry Memorial exhibition this spring and now touring the United States. Additional gifts will be shown during the fall and winter. In September, 20 drawings by Yves Tanguy will be Included in an exhibition of works received through the Kay Sage Tanguy Bequest. In December, Robert Rauschenberg's 3k illustrations for Dante's Inferno will celebrate the termination of the poet's 700th anniversary.
