10 RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE Riser Pipe Grade Control Structure RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE EXERCISE: RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE As an introduction to the Site Modeler tools, a simple site design will be undertaken. Keep in mind that the specifics of this design are not important. Instead, the concept and workflow for using the site modeling tools is the purpose of this lesson. Relate the process and tools presented to the projects and design challenges you undertake. Exercise Objective This exercise involves building a berm across a ravine and applying ditch slide-slope improvements. This will be completed using dynamic and associative relationships between design and existing elements. June 2011 V EnvisionCAD.com 10-1

RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE Files Needed The goal is to develop a DTM representing the proposed design incorporated (merged) with existing conditions. First a building pad will be constructed at an elevation that is relative to existing ground. Then the drainage structure will be created. This will be accomplished by first creating a surface for the berm, followed by creating a surface at the outlet, and finishing by creating a surface for the riser pipe inlet. As these surfaces are created, they will be automatically merged, resulting in a composite DTM. As a challenge exercise, an access road to the berm can be added from the top of an adjacent levee. Files Needed From the folder: C:\EnvisionCAD\InRoads\Site_Design\Riser Pipe Project File Riser_Pipe.dgn bfc0605.dtm the existing conditions DTM Starting InRoads Follow these steps: 1. From the Windows Start menu select: Start > All Programs > Bentley > InRoads Group V8i ****> InRoads. 2. From the MicroStation manager dialog select: User EnvisionCAD Project EnvisionCAD-InRoads Interface EnvisionCAD 3. Path to the directory C:\EnvisionCAD\InRoads\Site_Design\Riser Pipe Project. 4. Open the file Riser_Pipe.dgn. Model: Existing Conditions. 5. Take a minute to review the existing conditions. Get a good mental picture of the existing drainage EnvisionCAD.com Do Not Duplicate

10 RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE Starting InRoads 6. Now switch to the MicroStation model Design that shows proposed elements. From the MicroStation interface select: File > Models. 7. <D> <D> on the model named Design. Close the models dialog. 8. If the CAD file was opened with MicroStation and InRoads is not running, activate InRoads. To start InRoads from the MicroStation interface, select Applications > InRoads Group > Launch InRoads. Note: With the SELECTseries release of InRoads, the MicroStation interface now incorporates InRoads commands. For the purpose of this exercise, the traditional InRoads dialog will be used. However, if you are comfortable using the task menus, feel free to access the Site Modeler commands from there. 9. From InRoads: Select: File > Project Defaults. 10. <D> New. 11. Create a new configuration named: Site Design - Riser Pipe. 12. Complete the dialog as follows. June 2011 V EnvisionCAD.com 10-3

RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE Starting InRoads Note: The Browse button can be used to locate files or define directory locations. Standard Windows cut and paste commands can be used to populate fields. 13. <D> Apply and Close when complete. 14. In the InRoads Explorer window <R> on Surfaces to access the fly-out menu and load the existing ground surface named bfc0605.dtm. The MicroStation reference for existing conditions can be turned off. 15. In MicroStation, Select File > References, and turn off the display for the Existing Conditions model EnvisionCAD.com Do Not Duplicate

10 RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE Creating a New Site Project The display should look similar to the below image that depicts elements critical to the design. Creating a New Site Project Follow these steps: 1. In the InRoads explorer, <R> on Site Modeler Projec to activate the fly-out menu and select New. 2. Create a new Site Project: Type: Site Project June 2011 V EnvisionCAD.com 10-5

RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE Creating a New Site Project Name: Riser Pipe Project 3. Next create a Site within the Riser Pipe Project: Type: Site Name: Grading Plan 4. Create a new Surface by adding the existing ground DTM into the Site project. Type: Surface Name: Existing Ground 1. (This field will automatically populate when Surface Type is selected. It can be renamed.) From Surface: Toggle On Add to Active Surface: Toggle Off EnvisionCAD.com Do Not Duplicate

10 RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE Creating a New Site Project Use as Base Surface: Toggle On 5. <D> Apply and Close the New dialog. The CAD display should show graphics for the perimeter and contours of existing ground. Important! The graphics shown are dynamic display and are not written to the CAD file. As site modifications are made, the dynamic display updates automatically. June 2011 V EnvisionCAD.com 10-7

RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE Add the Building Pad to the Site Add the Building Pad to the Site The first element added to the grading plan will be the building pad. The graphics are drawn in the CAD file at elevation 0. When the pad is added as a surface, it will be draped onto existing ground with a 1 foot vertical offset to provide positive drainage. Follow these steps: 1. Select Site Modeler > Surface > Pad Design. Surface Type: Building Add to Active Surface: Toggle On Pad Style: P_Site_BuildingPAD 2. <D> Next. 3. Input: Method: Drape on Surface Offset: 1 Drape Option: Maximum Elevation Surface: Exist Ground 1 Use Reference Element Association: Off ID: Use the selection icon to identify the building footprint (number may vary) Name: Bldg 4. <D> Next EnvisionCAD.com Do Not Duplicate

10 RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE Add the Building Pad to the Site 5. Input Cut/Fill slopes of 1:3 or 33.33%. 6. <D> Apply. The building pad is incorporated in the site Grading Plan. Important! Note: The MicroStation graphic can be manipulated using the move, scale, rotate, insert vertex, etc. commands to modify both the graphics and the surface. However, a MicroStation undo command only restores the graphic to its previous state. The surface will not revert to the previous state. Take note how the contours correctly wrap around the concave area of the building. June 2011 V EnvisionCAD.com 10-9

RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE Move, Modify and Synchronize the CAD Element Move, Modify and Synchronize the CAD Element The surface is constructed based on the element selected when the pad was created. Modifying the CAD graphic causes the surface to reform based on the location of that graphic. Follow these steps: 1. Using CAD software, move, scale, or rotate the building outline and observe how the surface reforms. 2. Using CAD software, modify the element in any fashion. 3. Using CAD software, execute an Undo command. Note the surface is no longer associated with the element. Several solutions exist to re-associate the surface to the element. 4. Select Site Modeler > Site Tools > Synchronize with Graphics. 5. <D> Yes in the alert dialog to rebuild all Site Elements. 6. Alternatively, modify the element by moving it or changing element properties such as weight, color, or linetype. The site will update. 7. Return the building to its approximate original location EnvisionCAD.com Do Not Duplicate

10 RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE Add a Garage Relative to the House Add a Garage Relative to the House By default, when adding elements to the site using either pad or pond design, the elements are assigned the surface triangulation properties of Boundary. Only elements that represent the extreme limits of a surface should be assigned this style. A second feature is going to be added to the surface to illustrate these element properties. Ultimately the Feature Type of the initial building must be modified to include the second element. Follow these steps: 1. Select Site Modeler > Surface > Edit. The goal is to create the garage feature relative to the house. The garage should be constructed two feet lower than the house. This can be accomplished by using the house as a Reference Association. As the elevation of the house changes, so does the garage. 2. Configure the dialog as shown then <D> Apply & Close. In the message field the message Successful Completion is shown, however no visible results are shown in the CAD file. 3. Site Modeler > Surface > Edit to verify the element was added to the surface. 4. Close the Edit Surface dialog. June 2011 V EnvisionCAD.com 10-11

RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE Changing Element Properties Changing Element Properties The Garage element is contained in the surface, however the initial building exists as a Boundary element which defines the limits of the surface. To expand the limits of the surface to include the garage feature, the properties of the initial building must be changed. Follow these steps: 1. Site Modeler > Element > Information to change the element Feature Type to a Breakline. 2. <D> Apply & Close. Answer Yes to modify the element. The surface now displays two buildings which are associated by elevation. 3. Use CAD commands to move either building. Note how the vertical relationship is maintained EnvisionCAD.com Do Not Duplicate

10 RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE Modifying Surface Elevation Modifying Surface Elevation A delta change to the surface elevation can be made. Follow these steps: 1. Site Modeler > Surface > Raise/Lower. The elevations of all elements in the surface can be moved vertically using Site Modeler commands. Use the Site Modeler Raise/Lower Element command to input relative elevation changes. Follow these steps: 1. Site Modeler > Surface > Raise/Lower. 2. Using the selection button <D> on the building element. 3. Key-in <D> Apply. Observe that both buildings change elevation. 4. <D> Apply again. The buildings are now four feet higher than originally designed. 5. Move the building back to its original elevation by lowering it 4 feet. 6. Using MicroStation, move the house. 7. Also move the garage. 8. Note the building are still constrained by elevation. 9. Select Site Modeler > Surface > Move. Note that all surface elements relocate but maintain their spacial relationships. Modifying Element Elevation In additional to making global changes to the surface, delta changes can be made to the elements in the surface. Follow these steps: 1. Site Modeler > Element > Raise/Lower. 2. Use the selection button to identify the garage feature. 3. <D> Apply. The garage has changed elevation. Note the original building did not change elevation. The garage is associated to the house and this is not a bi-directional association. If the elevation of the house is changed the garage would move a relative amount. 4. Change the elevation of the house element and note the associated change to the garage element. Note: The locations and elevations of the building are not critical to this exercise. However, try to return them to their original locations and elevations after making modifications. June 2011 V EnvisionCAD.com 10-13

RISER PIPE GRADE CONTROL STRUCTURE Element Feature Types 5. Save the site project. In InRoads explorer, <R> on Site Modeler Project to activate the fly-out menu and select Save. 6. save Riser Pipe Project. gsf. Element Feature Types Upon close inspection, it can be seen that the contouring around the original building changed when the element type was changed from Boundary to Breakline. Not only does a Boundary type element define the outmost limits of a surface, it also constrains surfaces (and therefore contours) to eliminate triangulation across concave areas of the design. One solution to the above issue is to create separate surfaces for both the house and the garage. Elements can still maintain a relationship to a reference element contained in a different surface. Follow these steps: Work through the following solution. Workflow to correct the surface. Edit surface Bldg 1 and Remove the garage element. Change the house element to a Boundary element type. Create a New surface to contain the garage. Add the garage element in the new surface and use the house as a reference element. Verify the reference association by making a modification to the parent element EnvisionCAD.com Do Not Duplicate
