Marit McCluske GDES 4351 F 2012 Design Process: Photography Portfolio of Student Work 1 This was a comprehensive digital photography class tailored for graphic designers and the only photo course within the design department. In general, most students had minimal previous experience with photography. Project: Editorial/Documentary This project was designed to let students explore a topic of interest through either editorial or documentary photography and create a strong, visually cohesive photographic essay. The goal for this project was to showcase attention to lighting technique, compositional detail and narrative of the subject through treatment. Images were expected to be strongly united through style. The deliverable was a series of prints, including at least one large format print.

Portfolio of Student Work 2 GDES 2361 F 2013 Design Process: Photography Project: Editorial/Documentary (Continued)

GDES 2361/4351 F 2012 & 2013 Design Process: Photography Portfolio of Student Work 3 Project: Abstraction through Nature vs. Nurture In this project, students had to develop two separate series of abstract photography. One series was composed of abstracted images as seen through the camera ( nature, i.e. as shot). The second series was images made abstracted through manipulation and post-processing ( nurture ; also included tools made in class such as bokeh disks and filters). Additionally, each photo in both sets had to emphasize an element of expression, such as color, shape, line or texture. Photographs needed to also utilize principles such as types of balance, grouping, and contrast. The goal was to explore the minimalism associated with abstract photography to create powerful images through design elements, as seen in daily life by cultivating a careful eye and attention to detail. In critique, students had the task of exploring the role of abstract photography in graphic design.

Portfolio of Student Work 4 GDES 4351 F 2012 Design Process: Photography Project: Photographic Narrative Students had to consider the role of the photographer in telling a story to capture a photographic narrative essay. Students could either create a series of objective documentary photography, or adapt a story from a non-visual format to be told through photographs. Students then composed an albumbound or clamshell style book to explore the layout of the photographs and how this impacts the narrative. Alternate approach: a photographic flipbook telling the story of food trying to escape. Song narrative. A narrative about sushi making.

GDES 1311 S 2013 Drawing and Design in Two and Three Dimensions Portfolio of Student Work 5 This was a foundations level drawing course for graphic design majors. Students learned a variety of techniques for rendering and representation, and worked with various media used in traditional drawing and design. Project: Final Perspective Drawing Students applied their knowledge of fundamental drawing techniques to create a full value, 18 x 24 drawing of the design school building. Perspective, composition and atmospheric lighting were emphasized in this project. Students were also encouraged to integrate their own illustration style or imagination with an attention to realism to create a unique drawing.

GDES 1311 S 2013 Drawing and Design in Two and Three Dimensions Project: Drawing From Nature Students created 12 drawings of a chosen still-life object, each drawing an exploration of a given style of technique. This assignment was about design iterations, to understand that there is more than one solution to a design problem, and more than one way of looking at something. Students were encouraged to consider many solutions, as well as many forms and languages of representation. Examples of the 12 styles include: use of dots and/or dashes, abstracting the object to a decorative style or pattern, reducing to figure/ground relationships, and drawing the object in a specific art/design style. Portfolio of Student Work 6

Portfolio of Student Work 7 GDES 1311 S 2013 Drawing and Design in Two and Three Dimensions Project: Figure Drawing and Portraiture One unit of the class consisted of several figure drawing sessions in which students gained experience drawing from live models. Students were able to experiment with various media as well as techniques, including contour, reductive, gesture and full value rendering. Students then had to further develop selected in-class drawings to emphasize a design element. Alternatively, they could also apply an artistic style to existing gesture drawings to create a finished series.

DES 1111 S 2011 F 2012 Creative Problem Solving Portfolio of Student Work 8 This class was dedicated to teaching creativity techniques and improving creative skill. Students were given weekly prompts to do something different and conducted assignments based on this. Students also had a large group project to construct a Rube Goldberg Machine based on design requirements. Rube Goldberg Machine construction, Spring 2012 Give in a different way, Fall 2012 Wear something different: sandpaper pants worn over jeans to distress them for fashion; sweatshirt with built-in backpack patches, Spring/Fall 2011
