3 1 General This document is a guide to select the correct fittings for Hexatronic ADSS cables. Depending on what type of ADSS cables that is going to be used, the Hexatronic product number of the different fittings is given. As an extra information the area of use for different type of fittings is also described in the document. 2 Selection of Fittings Cable type No of fibres Where to use Type of product Hexatronic No Comments TOL kn (15 mm) up to 48 NSF /01 For installation Thimble NSF /02 load of 10kN. Oval eye NSF Optional, used if hook is to small to accommodate dead end/thimble. 3 Description of Fittings 3.1 Fittings For optical aerial cables of type concentric ADSS, helical dead ends shall be used as tension fittings. For short to medium span lengths the helical dead end is installed directly on the ADSS cable. For long span lengths the ADSS cable is covered with protection rods underneath the dead end. Thimble ADSS cable Picture 1: installed directly on the ADSS. Thimble Protection rods ADSS cable Picture 2: with protection rods NSF Uen Rev.A /10
7 3.2 Fittings For ADSS cables the primary suspension recommendation is to use suspension, see picture 3. This suspension fitting is easy to install, gives excellent vertical load performance and withstands a quite high degree of unbalanced load. Helical rods ADSS cable pulley Picture 3:. 3.3 Dampers In case of vibration problems dampers can be used. The vibration damper is installed with the gripping section towards the tower and the damping section towards the free span, as can be seen in picture 4. Thimble damper ADSS cable Picture 4: damper mounted on ADSS cable NSF Uen Rev.A /10
8 4 Point versus Point 4.1 Description of Point A tension is, as the name implies, a where the cable is tensioned to a pole / tower. On one side of this the cable is tensioned and on the other side it is relaxed. This means that there are longitudinal net forces present in this. ing is normally done at least every 1-1½ kilometer along the line to secure the cable. However, tensioning is also necessary: In first and last pole. At joint closures. When the line describes a larger angle in a pole, normally above 15, see picture 5. At significant altitude changes between poles. When changing cable height in a pole. Pole tension >15 Picture 5: At larger angles tensioning shall be performed. ing is also recommended: When crossing water. When crossing roads, bridges etc. Observe that one tension fitting only supports tension in one direction. Normally two fittings per pole are needed, see picture 6. In the first and last pole of course only one fitting is necessary. Picture 6: Two dead ends per pole are necessary NSF Uen Rev.A /10
9 4.2 Description of Point A suspension is a where the cable is simply just suspended. The cable is suspended in the poles between two tension s. Normally no longitudinal forces act in this. However, differential loads can sometimes occur from ice loads etc. Observe that a suspension fitting cannot work as a tension fitting and shall never be used as such. 4.3 Installation Example To further illustrate when to use tension fittings or suspension fittings please refer to picture 7 below, showing an example of an installed cable line. s s Joint closure s May be tension depending on angle Joint closure s Joint closure Picture 7: Example of when to use tension fittings or suspension fittings NSF Uen Rev.A /10
