Superheroes Lesson One Focus on: Devising Make-Up Design Originally Created by A Rosshall Academy
Learning Intentions To respond to visual stimuli, to develop characters for drama. To work with others to share and use ideas
Success Criteria You will create a character profile based on a superhero starting point.
THE COMIC STRIP GENRE A BRIEF HISTORY Developing knowledge of social cultural influences At its simplest, a comic book is a series of words and pictures that are presented in a sequential manner to form a narrative that may or may not be humorous (McCloud 1993). Originating in the United States in the late 1800s, the comic book contains everyday language, slang, and idiom, as well as colour and a sophisticated interplay between text and image.
The comic book is actually a valuable historical text that comments on how young people and adults alike identify with a variety of issues (social, political, cultural). Think about what is going on at the minute in Scotland. As such, a comic book is much more than just a series of words and pictures with minimal cultural importance. It is much more than just a form of entertainment for kids, comic books are a serious and sophisticated art form. Elements of the genre can be traced back to ancient Greek mythological gods and superheroes. For example, the modern comic book hero Flash Gordon explicitly draws on the iconography of the Greek god Hermes with his winged helmet and boots. Samson s weakness in the Old Testament, a haircut, echoes the vulnerabilities that afflict modern heroes, such as Superman s kryptonite.
Other ancient heroes such as Zeus, Gilgamesh, Thor, Beowulf, and Jason and the Argonauts all contain conventions that are seen in modern-day comic book heroes, such as the sidekick and teaming up with others, as in the Justice League. This is also a formula that was further developed and used in Melodrama and Pantomime Hero/heroine, Villain, side kick, comedy duo etc. The format of the modern day comic book perhaps can be traced to ancient narrative sequences of cave paintings, but more likely to the medieval broadsheet, which was a narrative strip carved into woodcuttings (Hayman and Pratt 2005). Cartoon sheets of public executions were created as were caricatures of public figures (think of people that are constantly in the media). Lots of these would be printed and collected altogether and given out.
Written Task 1: Character Profiles In groups of 4/5 you will create 4 to 5 comic book characters (superhero, villain, damsel, assistant, etc). Look at the following slides with the images of some Superheroes. Make some notes about: the superhero powers they possess. their disguises (Bruce Wayne/ Clarke Kent) who are their enemies? (The Joker) who are their sidekicks or assistants? (Robin)

Firstly in groups discuss and write down initial ideas for who your super hero(es) and other characters could be. My initial idea/s for a characters are:
In your groups take one character each and write a character card for that character. You should include the following information: Name Age Interests Background Personality Appearance Any other information you feel is relevant.
