1 ART GRADE 7 Figure Drawing Lesson Plan Period 1 Students brainstorm different powers for superheroes in table groups. Provide large paper and markers to write down ideas. Share three ideas with the class - whole class discussion [10 minutes] Ask Students: Why superheroes are so popular today and were created in the first place? What other made-up people are similar to superheroes in human history? In their table groups, they are again to answer these questions **As you take up their responses, stress that superheroes reflect the culture that created them but also impact that culture. This is also the case with sport and this is a big issue right now so students might connect to this idea and it will help them think about other cultural creations, like superheroes in that light [10 minutes] With this discussion in mind, students are to create a superhero who in some way makes a positive impact on our culture (e.g. Black Panther, created in 1966 and who got his own comic in 1977, is reflective of not only Black Liberation movements in the 60s and 70s but the BLM movement and today s cultural politics; Batgirl s recent recreation is one of a number of female hero s recreated to challenge earlier female hero constume, pose and persona stereotypes and provide more positive role-models). To help them with this they should first generate in table groups various costume parts (e.g. capes, masks, symbols, gloves, etc.), which could be used to make a unique superhero. They could take an existing costume and modify it. [10 minutes]

2 After this, students are to practice drawing both a female and male human figure. If you feel comfortable, you can use the document camera and the students can follow along as you discuss proportions and body parts. If not, students can refer to the proportion sheet and try to create their own female and male human figure. Stress the proportions of the arms, legs and that the waist is generally in the middle of the figure and that trying to draw in a style that one is comfortable with is always best. [15 minutes] Period 2 Tell students that they are to choose from the available template sheets a human figure. They are not to draw on this sheet but draw it themselves on 8x11 paper (they can trace using the light from the windows if they want) and try to alter parts of it to make it more their own. They are to give the figure a costume, hair (if they want), powers, gadgets, a backstory and a face. They are also to give their character a name and write this at the top of their sheet. The figure can be coloured in using the pencil crayons at the side counter. Students should use colours that represent their character. [50 minutes] As they are working, ask students in what way they think their character makes a positive impact on our culture. Possible responses: stand up for others; help the environment (Green Guy; Green Woman), etc. Clean-up and have students put their work (with their name on it) in the drawer for their class at the back. [5 minutes]

3 Create Your Own Superhero Comic Book Cover 1. Research RECENT (After 2000) comic book covers and superheroes. Gather images to use to design your superhero s or villain s costume and pose. 2. Practice drawing dynamic poses from examples you have found. Focus on making the pose appear natural and getting the proportions of the figure correct. 3. Choose a font and background scene that fit your hero/villain. i.e. If your character is a lava person then this should be reflected in the lettering. Focus on making the cover unified. 4. Use space well have your character be the focal point. Avoid having too much negative space. 5. After you have created your rough copy, you will create a good copy in any medium you would like (e.g. photoshop, illustrator, ink, pencil crayon, marker, etc.) Rubric Figure is in a unique and appropriate costume given his or her powers/persona Figure is dynamic (not standing completely straight with hands at the side) and appears to be natural looking Cover is unified. Background, figure and title work together to create a work of art. Space has been used effectively. Figure stands out. Good use of contrast to emphasize the super hero/villain.
