1 329 CHAPTER 7 CIRCULATION OF WEEKLIES AND OTHER PERIODICALS The Indian Press, especially comprising Weeklies, Monthlies and other Periodicals, has shown significant growth in the recent years, which has been reflected elaborately in different statistical tables from 7.1 to 7.10 in this Chapter. The Periodicals other than Dailies and Tri/Bi Weeklies formed an important part of the circulation in Print Media. It highlights and covers diverse topics such as finance, religion and philosophy, medicine, current affairs, fiction, art and science, sports, women power and children in different languages. For the current financial year , a total number of 21,187 Annual Statements were received from the publishers online in respect of other Periodicals raising their claimed circulation figure to 18,73,76,072 copies per publishing day (Table 7.2). As a growth rate of 3.37% was recorded in e-filing of Annual Statements by Weeklies and other Periodicals, a decrease of 11.92% was also recorded in their claimed circulation this year compared to the previous year Among the Periodicals, Weeklies dominated the scene with a total number of 10,834 publications out of 21,187 publications which filed online Annual Statements for and in circulation also remained top by claiming 10,60,27,875 out of 18,73,76,072 copies per publishing day, followed by Monthlies 6,138 with circulation of 4,37,73,013 copies, Fortnightlies 2,836 with circulation of 2,23,76,002 copies, Quarterlies 522 with circulation of 20,23,766 copies and Annuals 94 with circulation of 14,70,907 copies. The remaining 763 publications were of other periodicities with a claimed circulation of 1,17,04,509 copies per publishing day. (Table 7.2) LANGUAGE WISE While going through Annual Statements filed for the year , it has been observed that Periodicals were brought out in all principal languages of the country except Bodo. Language wise analysis states that Hindi Periodicals have maintained a lead with 11,489 publications followed by Marathi (1,703), English (1,578), Gujarati (1,509), Bilingual (1,236), Telugu (983), Urdu (594), Kannada (465), Bengali (433), Tamil (359), Odia (291), and Malayalam (191). (Table 7.3) In circulation also, Hindi Periodicals maintain their lead with a total circulation of 9,21,43,130 copies per publishing day followed by English (2,37,27,659), Gujarati (1,34,81,862), Marathi (1,03,34,597), Telugu (94,37,656), Malayalam (62,58,106) and Urdu (53,52,682). (Table 7.3)
2 330 The Press in India STATE/UT-WISE Madhya Pradesh leads with 3,726 Periodicals; Uttar Pradesh came second with 3,667 followed by Maharashtra 2,730, Uttarakhand 1,676, Delhi 1,596, Gujarat 1,586 and Rajasthan 1,333. (Table 7.4) Uttar Pradesh remained on top position in terms of circulation also with a claim of 3,59,05,982 copies per publishing day followed by Madhya Pradesh with 2,19,11,318 copies, Maharashtra 2,04,97,136 copies, Delhi 1,98,98,222, Gujarat 1,49,26,366 copies and Uttarakhand 1,22,38,680 copies per publishing day. (Table 7.4) CONTENTS The Periodicals have been classified into 20 categories according to their contents as per total number of Annual Statements received for the year The Periodicals which cover major topics fall under the category of NCA (News and Current Affairs 19,112), followed by UNC (Unclassified 534), SOW (Social Welfare 266), EDU (Education 233), LAC (Literature & Culture 194), MAH (Medicine and Health 191) and AAH (Agriculture and Animal Husbandry 100) etc. (Table 7.5) Weeklies and Monthlies maintained the leading trend in terms of coverage of matters pertaining to News and Current Affairs with 10,834 and 6,138 publications in numbers respectively. (Table 7.5) Periodicals were published in all major Indian languages except Bodo covering topics on news and current affairs Hindi Periodicals continued to dominate the scene in the category of News and Current Affairs with 11,489 publications followed by Marathi & English with 1,703 & 1,578 publications respectively. They continued to remain on top leaving aside rest of other categories such as topic on social welfare, religion and philosophy, literary and culture, etc. (Table 7.6) Circulation-wise also the Periodicals covering News and Current Affairs as the main topic remained on top with 16,41,35,938 copies followed by UNC (Unclassified 74,92,101) EDU (Education 23,70,145), LAC (Literature & Culture 20,30,649) and SOW (Social Welfare 19,64,237). (Table 7.7)
3 CIRCULATION OF WEEKLIES AND OTHER PERIODICALS 331 GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS There were 57 Government Publications, which filed Annual Statements for the year , out of which 31 belonged to the Central and 26 to the State Governments (Table 7.8). However, the actual number of publications brought out by the Central as well as State governments and their various Departments are much higher Out of the 57 Government Publications, Monthlies dominated the scene having 31 in number followed by Weeklies, Quarterlies, and Fortnightlies and Daily having 10, 5, 3 and 3 publications respectively. Remaining 4 were of other periodicities. (Table 7.8) Language-wise, the largest number of government publications were brought out in English (14) followed by Hindi (13), Bilingual (8), Urdu (4), and 3 each in Malayalam, Telugu, Bengali and Marathi. (Table 7.9) CENTRAL GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS Out of 31 Central Government Publications; 11 were in English, 09 in Hindi, 03 in Urdu and 1 each in Odia, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Kannada, Marathi, Urdu and Punjabi. (Table 7.9) Out of 31 Central Government Publications; 19 were published from Delhi followed by 3 from Karnataka, 2 from Maharashtra and 1 each from Assam, Telangana, Gujarat, Kerala, M.P., West Bengal and Uttarakhand. (Table 7.10) STATE GOVERNMENT PUBLICATIONS There were 26 State Government Publications which filed their Annual Statements in Out of this, 7 were in Bilingual, 4 were in Hindi, 3 were in English, 2 each were in Bengali, Malayalam, Marathi, Multilingual and Telugu, 1 each were in Kannada and Urdu. (Table 7.9) State-wise study shows that, 3 each were from Maharashtra, Kerala, Telangana, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, 2 each were from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, A.P., and West Bengal, 1 each from Assam, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan. (Table 7.10) LARGEST CIRCULATED GOVERNMENT PUBLICATION CENTRAL GOVERNMENT Employment News, English/Weekly published from Delhi by the Publications Division, M/o I&B, Government of India, had a circulation of 1,37,669 copies per publishing day.
