2 INITIAL RESEARCH & PROPOSAL I started this project with one project and ended up with a completely different one. In my first proposal, I wanted to discuss the idea of personal identity and how we each experience our own culture and our country s. With my friend, we took pictures of each other and wanted to communicate the idea of personal transformation and acceptance of self, even if that means choosing which values to uphold over others. The Switch When I presented the mock-up, you mentioned that it lacked the interactivity. You were right. I felt dissatisfied with my project, so I decided to give it more time and thought. While reworking around my initial idea, I realized that I wanted to speak concerning personal stories and how in the world of social media and personal branding we can use them to sell a product or ourselves online. 3 WHY DID I CHOOSE THIS SUBJECT? I chose this subject because I wanted to discuss the idea of selling oneself online for recognition, profit or just for attention. When it comes to Youtubers, they are usually pushed by their viewers to open up about their private lives. The more they show, the more they become popular and the more they can get sponsored and pay for their lifestyle. When it comes to the viewer, how do they feel when their favourite social media influencers use their personal lives or stories to make a living? Do they feel betrayed or do they feel like they can trust them as much? That is why I decided to juxtapose receipts, plane tickets, checks, and credit cards with a personal story. I want to understand the dynamic between what is said and what is seen: when these social media influencers display their lives online whether opening up or showing what they eat in the morning, are they seen as truthful and are those moments honest in of themselves? Does this way of making a living affect the maker s self-worth or authenticity? Is the check worth the exposure and positive and negative attention? And for the influencers, how do they feel when we as viewers see their lives online? How do they feel when corporations ask them to talk about their brand on their channel or Instagram account? 4 INSPIRATION Before I completely changed my idea, these were the images that inspired the project: I knew that I wanted to play with transparency and opacity using vellum paper. I also wanted to include an organic paper such as kraft. For the type, I envisioned to mix a sans serif with a script or handwritten font. And because we also took pictures, I thought that they fitted a project on personal identity, perceptions, and transformation well. 5 INITIAL SKETCHES Then, I went for a standard book with a cover and back cover made with vellum paper, photographs, and a mix of handwritten and sans serif typography. The final result is on the mockup page (8). In my first sketches, I first imagined it as a book/poster that could be folded into multiple parts and then opened to display both the text and the images. PROJECT 3: MY STORY IS FOR SALE P5

6 THE PHOTOGRAPHY SESSION These photos were taken in the EV6 studio at Concordia. We spent two hours there. I used Photoshop to retouch and edit the pictures, later on, removing blemishes and turning them into black and white shots. PROJECT 3: MY STORY IS FOR SALE P6

7 IDEA #1 IN INDESIGN BEFORE THE SWITCH My Indesign progress constituted of two parts: the first idea and the switch. I created a new file later on, but this is what it looked like before I changed my mind. PROJECT 3: MY STORY IS FOR SALE P7

8 FIRST MOCKUP This is the mockup I presented to you and my peer-review group. I was not satisfied with it truthfully, but it was what I had at that time. As you told me, there is no interactivity between the texts. PROJECT 3: MY STORY IS FOR SALE P8

9 MORE SKETCHES FROM PLAN A PLAN B I started my second batch of sketches thinking of making one of text move through the page from top to bottom to represent transformation. I even thought of juxtaposing so much text on top of another that it would be impossible to read and then create a transition: removing more and more layers and finally being able to read again. When I changed my idea, I wanted to build a book around a checkbook concept: detachable sheets of paper. PROJECT 3: MY STORY IS FOR SALE P9

10 FINAL IDEA INDESIGN FILE On the left: the pictures I took before I re-wrote and changed some personal information in Indesign. On the right: the checks, receipts and plane tickets in overlay over the personal story. This is what it is supposed to look like at the end. I used pink as the main colour because it pops and it is the closest thing to red: the colour of danger. I wanted to use vellum paper to create a blueprint or infrared look for the checks, credit cards, etc. Each page of a personal story on identity written by my friend. 11 PERSONAL REFLECTION My first idea looked okay, but it did not have any substance I think. At first, I did not pay it too much attention because my thought process was: I take beautiful pictures, add text, and everything will work out fine. Unfortunately, it does not work way, and I learned that lesson while working on this project. A focused idea has to be found first to create a coherent and dynamic project later on. I thought my concept was precise at first (personal identity), but with time I realized that I wanted to say so many things and lost focus. The idea of using receipts, checks and credit cards to overlay on top of a personal story came when I saw a receipt on my kitchen table. It was at that moment that I fell like I was honestly inspired and that ideas flowed. As obvious as it sounds, my idea started to make sense only when I used my hands. I did not use them from the beginning, and I think that is why I could not get it to work or translate the message. In the end, I am glad that I changed my mind. And I did not even need to use photos to communicate a message. I feel like the final result comes from my heart and opens a discussion on the online presence of social media influencers and the perception of their viewers. PROJECT 3: MY STORY IS FOR SALE P11
