In The Loupe Starring Dave Wnuck This Week In The Loupe Shealyns Highlights PCGS Grading Offer Want Lists Inventory Highlights Inventory Highlights 1793 CHAIN 1C AMERICA PCGS AU55BN S-3 Low R.3 Zen and the Art of Collectibles Maintenance "Collectibles Maintenance". That is an odd and unfamiliar phrase when applied to numismatics. Coins simply don't need much maintenance. You buy them, and then store them in a safe and dry place. That pretty much covers it. Collectors in other fields aren't quite as lucky. I was reminded of this fact while reading an article in an art journal this week C LIBERTY CAP PCGS F12BN S-13 High R.3

2 I just love American landscape paintings, especially those of the Hudson River School. If you aren't familiar with this genre of painting, do yourself a favor and Google it. While doing so you can learn about the 19th century masters of this genre. Among the greatest of those masters was Albert Bierstadt. [Here is a link to a website devoted to his paintings: ]. The article that caught my eye concerned how one of Bierstadt's paintings was recently mounted in a new frame C FLYING EAGLE PCGS PR45 CAC Snow C PCGS MS65RB CAC The curators felt that this painting needed a new frame. As you might imagine, getting such a large, old and valuable work of art reframed involved more than simply going to the local Wal Mart and buying one off the shelf. More indeed. 1888/7 1C PCGS XF40BN Here are some statistics on the reframing of this one painting: It took 11 months of research to recreate the frame that most likely surrounded this painting when it was new. The frame alone weighed 500 pounds. This 8 foot by 12 foot picture frame was transported by truck from the framers in Manhattan out to the museum in Corning, NY C PCGS MS66 CAC A crane was used to lift the frame three stories into the museum. A team of six people removed the painting from its old frame. See the photo below.

But I'd be willing to wager that it was a lot more than a frame purchased off the rack at the aforementioned Wal Mart O H10C PCGS MS67+ CAC After reading that article I could only come to one conclusion. Often owning such a work of art can turn out to be one giant pain in the, um, rear. It also reminded me once again of how lucky we are with our coin hobby. So if you collect coins and not giant Hudson River School paintings, I can logically conclude that your rear will most likely be pain free. Ease of storage and low/no maintenance are two major but often overlooked benefits of this great hobby of ours C PCGS AU58 JR-1 R.3 Dave's Picks from the HLRC Inventory These are coins that I chose to highlight here. 4 1913-S 25C PCGS MS65 CAC C LIBERTY CAP PCGS F12BN S-81 R.3 The cents of 1796 are all elusive, whether it is the liberty cap shown here or the draped bust style of 1796 that came after this type. When the coins are found they are normally anything but problem free. Often they are black and rough from corrosion. Finding a smooth, brown, hard surfaced example such as this one is way more difficult than you might think S 25C PCGS AU50 CAC C STANDING LIBERTY PCGS MS63FH C FLYING EAGLE PCGS MS65 CAC FS-401B This coin displays Christian Gobrecht's beautiful Eagle in Flight design in all its glory. As much as I like this same image on the Gobrecht Dollars from the 1830's, somehow it seems more balanced and aesthetically pleasing to me on a top grade flying eagle cent C STANDING LIBERTY PCGS MS64FH

5 1815/2 50C NGC XF45 O-101A R C PCGS VF25BN CAC Surprisingly to those who do not specialize in this series, these midgrade circulated specimens of this final year of the circulation strikes are more difficult to find than proofs. This is a particularly wholesome example and sports a CAC sticker as well C CSA RESTRIKE PCGS AU58 (High Quality Image Coming Soon) C PCGS MS66 CAC C PCGS PR66 CAC Holy cow! A top flight example of the rarest date in this popular and completable series. Fantastic cartwheel luster, a needle sharp strike and the absence of marks make this coin a true blue chip. CAC has verified the grade as well S 50C PCGS MS64

6 1901-S 50C PCGS MS C NGC MS63 JR-4 R.3 This is just a solid, well made, lustrous, choice uncirculated bust dime. Choice uncirculated bust dimes are much more elusive than bust half dollars from this same era, yet sell for less. Go figure. Lots of coin for not all that much money $1 LARGE EAGLE PCGS XF45 BB-92 R C PCGS PR65 CAC Often proof Mercury dimes come with natural but often unattractive milky yellow haze. Such haze was likely imparted from decades of storage in the brittle cellophane-like clear pouches that these coins came from the mint in. Whether it was from cross-contamination from the rusty staples that held these clear pouches together in their original mint issued packaging, or from some other source, that milky toning is the rule rather than the exception. As you might guess from this rather lengthy discourse on the subject, this particular specimen has not suffered that same fate. Deep, clear mirrors, lightly contrasting devices, and verification of grade from CAC. A good value for $ $1 OBVERSE STARS 8X PCGS AU50 BB-159 R $1 PCGS AU50 B-162 R.4

7 1800 $1 DOTTED DATE PCGS AU53 B-14 BB-194 R C PCGS VF20 B-1, R.1 A wholesome early silver coin, priced in the $600 range was the final year of the Large Size bust quarter design CC $1 PCGS F S 25C PCGS MS65 CAC The lowest mintage circulation strike coin in the twentieth century S quarters just weren't saved at the time, so mint state specimens are few & far between. This is a gorgeous gem uncirculated example, available at a very competitive price. And it is CAC'd too! Another blue chip opportunity CC $1 PCGS XF T$1 TRADE PCGS MS65

8 1877-CC T$1 PCGS MS62 CAC C PCGS MS67 A superlative example of the very first coin in the popular "short set" of Washington quarters. Frosty, fully struck, great luster, and nearly perfect. 9 diagonal die crack through the entire obverse. It starts at the dentil before the tip of the cap and continues down through the E in LIBERTY and all the way down to the dentil to the right of the 7 in the date. Colors are much richer than image lets on $3 PCGS MS C PCGS VF20 O-109 R.4 A condition rarity that is undergraded in our opinion. The majority of the examples of this variety in "higher grades" are genuine or not holdered at all. There are maybe 5 or 6 graded better examples, mostly NGC. This is about as nice as this die marriage comes. The surfaces have a very attractive pearly gray patina with hints of metallic green on the reverse $5 ROUND 6, 7X6 STA PCGS AU $5 ROUND 6, 7X6 STA PCGS MS C POINTED 6, STEM PCGS XF40 CAC O-114A R.4 Only a slightly better die marriage but one I like to point out because of the wicked cool bisecting die break on the reverse. 10 1799 $10 LARGE STARS OBVE PCGS VF25 BD-10 R C NGC AU55 O-105 R.2 *Overton Collection Plate Coin* Purchased out of the Downey ANA sale, this is a duplicate from the Overton collection and the current plate coin. Attractively toned with light to medium gold and hints of russet and blue at the rim $10 PCGS MS /8 $10 TYPE OF 1838 PCGS AU C PCGS MS64 O-115 R.2 Just wow...absolutely stunning luster! Brilliant silver with attractive champagne rim toning $10 PCGS AU55

11 1910-D $10 PCGS MS C SQUARE BASE 2 PCGS GEN O-124 R.5+ *Overton Collection Plate Coin* We are very excited to be able to offer an Overton Plate Coin for such a tough R.5+ variety. So rare is this die marriage that Overton lacked the example in both his first and second editions. This die marriage can be recognized by the wide 1, light milling and stars drawn to the edge on the obverse and the center line of stripe 4 extending below the shield on the reverse. The coin itself has a thick patina and great strike. This would be a stone cold 45, with details approaching AU, if it weren't for the three very old pin scratches on the reverse S $20 PCGS MS S $20 PCGS MS C SQUARE BASE 2 PCGS F02 CAC One of my favorite types of coins are wholesome low ball coins. Sharp strike, deep russet peripheral toning fading into light silver surfaces at the center, reverse also has deep russet toning mostly on upper half fading into the light silver towards the bottom.
