1 1871 half dime attribution guide (for EF and higher grade coins) by Clint Cummins draft This guide was developed by exhaustively checked images of 1871 half dimes from Heritage Auctions 2009 to 2016 (ha.com), Stacks-Bowers Auctions, PCGS Registry Sets / TrueView / CoinFacts images and a few other sources. Most coins were unattributed. All the quality photos help to make this attribution guide possible. A short procedure was developed for accurately classifying them, and photos of key markers for each die pair and significant die states were collected. The procedure identifies the most common varieties first, so the number of steps should be minimal. After presenting the procedure, we describe each die pair in detail, including rosters of the highest grade attributed examples. Attribution Procedure 1. Horizontal date position. Use the position of the 7 relative to the skirt pendant or bulla (vertical black line on each photo in the Date Position photo array on page 2). Drawing a line on your own photo usually requires that the photo be straightened by making a level line from the center of T in UNITED to between ER of AMERICA. However, the vertical line from the pendant intersects the rim between 2 dentils, so a line connecting these 2 points is an alternative to straightening. 2. Vertical date position. This is defined by whether the left 1 (aka L1) in the date is closer to the base or the dentils. It helps to identify Obverses 1-4 (slightly high and slightly low); the remainder are low. 3. Date angle. Level, uphill, slightly downhill helps distinguish between the low date obverses. Similarly, sometimes the left 1 (L1) or right 1 (R1) is closer to the dentils. 4. Open or closed D in UNITED. A closed D identifies V-3 (scarce) and V-8u (more common). Pendant above the right serif of the 7 identifies V-8u. Note: the lowercase u in V-8u indicates an unofficial V- number. These need to be confirmed by Liberty Seated Half Dime experts to become official. 5. Reverse clash right and below HALF DIME. The impression from the obverse leg/skirt forms a diagonal edge where it intersects the right side of the wreath near a leaf tip. This edge can be left of the tip, just touching it, or the tip can extend past the edge to the left (as a small or big point). The edge also intersects the right ribbon bow in various shapes. These clash position variations are just a simple way to classify the relative rotation of the obverse and reverse dies. See the Clash photo array on page Proof vs. business strike. V-1 is the usually observed proof. Patterns of die rust bumps left of the nose, right of the hair braid and in the lap (base of pole) usually make it easy to identify. V-11u and V-4 are also known in proof, with no rust bumps and different date position. 7. Obverse doubling of NIT and RI helps distinguish V-9u. 8. Valentine notes if each ribbon end touches the wreath. This is difficult to see on most photos, so it is not used in this guide. 9. The Obverse Dies Table and the Die Pairs Table on page 4 help summarize the key identifying obverse and reverse features of the 16 known die marriages, plus the unclashed or clashed die states. However, they are not a good starting point unless you can already identify some of the above features. 1

4 Obverse Dies Table (zoom in) Die Pair Table (zoom in) The following pages have further details on each of the 16 known die marriages. The counts for examples, appearances, and the roster of highest grade examples are based on images downloaded from websites in late 2016 and early 2017 which were of sufficiently high grade and high resolution (500 x 500 when cropped to the coin) for me to attribute them. 24 New and/or previously unpublished results in this study 1. V-4 exists in proof (only one specimen observed so far). 2. All V-4 specimens have the DDR in the lower right leaves briefly described in Blythe (1992). 3. V-8u is a second obverse with closed D. It was accurately described by Blythe (1992) but he did not realize it was different from the V-3 illustrated in Valentine s plate. V-3 is much scarcer than V-8u. 4. V-11u exists in proof. This was announced on the LSCC forum, but is not widely known. Previously V-1 was the only known proof die marriage. 5. V-7u, V-8u, V-9u, V-11u, V-12u, V-13u, V-14u, V-15u, V-16u are all new die marriages identified by precise date location metrics, and by the cataloging of reverse clash locations. Generally they were first identified by date location, and it was confirmed by clash locations. Most exist in both unclashed and clashed states. Obsolete V- numbers (suggested; not official yet requires expert review) I propose the following V- numbers for 1871 are obsolete (I did not include pages for them). 1. V-5. Same as V-4. Valentine s V-4 plate matches his description for V-5, and there is no V-5 plate. Discussion The reverse clash locations show in the image array on page 4 are not a complete description of the clashes. The reverse clashes usually include a horizontal line joining the tops of the wreath, which appears at different levels on different reverses. There is also an outline left of the upper left part of the wreath. Several corresponding clash marks are visible on obverses as well, usually between Liberty s head and pole, and right of Liberty s knee. We can associate each different reverse clash pattern with a different reverse die, if we assume that dies were not lapped after a clash and then clashed a second time with a different obverse die or a different rotation of the same obverse die. Ideally we would prefer to avoid this assumption and identify reverse die features that are shared across unclashed and clashed examples. But since the Liberty Seated half dimes (since late 1840 at least) have all features except the date and mint mark on the hub, the Philadelphia reverses are only identifiable in these later die states, with this assumption. If this assumption is false, we could still use these labels (B, C, K) as die states instead of dies. Possible future research - Is V-10u a true repunched 1, or some kind of horizontal die scratch? If repunched, it seems odd that it is not bolder and more frequently observed. 24
