1 1858-O half dime attribution guide (for EF and higher grade coins) by Clint Cummins draft This guide was constructed by exhaustively checking images of 1858-O half dimes from PCGS CoinFacts, Heritage Auctions 2009 to 2018 (ha.com), Stacks-Bowers Auctions, David Lawrence Rare Coins, Ira & Larry Goldberg Coins & Collectibles, Olevian Numismatic Rarities, ebay and a few other sources. Most coins were unattributed. However, all the quality photos help to make this attribution guide possible. A list of key features for attribution was developed for accurate classification, and photos of key markers for each die pair and significant die states were selected. The feature list identifies the most common varieties first, so the number of attribution steps should be minimal. After presenting the feature list, we describe each die pair in detail, including rosters of the highest grade examples for each die marriage and major die state. Key Attribution Features 1. Obverse cracks. Horizontal cracks from S5 (star 5) left and S9 right identify the frequently seen V-5 and V-7. A crack from foot diagonally to dentils identifies V-1A,b,c. A crack from top of S6 to S7 identifies V-2 and V-3. A crack K12 to forehead identifies V-9ua and V-10u. Photos pages 5, Vertical date position. Very low date identifies V-4 and V-11u. Low date is V-8u. High date is V-9u and V-10u. Photos pages 2, Reverse cracks. A crack from the left top of R identifies V-5, while a crack from the right top of R is V- 2 or V-7. ED, T3, I2 is V-1A,b,c. E1 M right top CA is V-3. M left top is V-2 or V-7. Diagonal ME is V-8u or V-9u. Vertical crack splitting S2 and OF is V-4a or V-10u. A crack at left stem is V-1A,b,c, V- 3, V-5, V-7or V-8u. Left ribbon is V-1A,b,c, V-2, V-5 or V-7. Right ribbon is V-3. Right stem is V-2, V-7 or V-10u. Photos page O mintmark position. Usually reverse cracks are more distinctive and easy to observe. Mint mark position can be accurately measured, though it takes time to draw the lines. It is essential for distinguishing V-4 from V-11u. See the Attribution methods used PDF linked on the last page for info on how to draw the quadrant + lines for the mintmark position. Photos page Horizontal date position. Use the position of the 5 relative to the skirt pendant or bulla (vertical black line on each photo). See the Attribution methods used PDF linked on the last page. All obverses are date right, except for Obverse 2 (V-2 and V-3) which is date left. Photos pages 2, Reverse cuds. A cud from right ribbon to C is V-3a. A cud from left ribbon to A3 is the rare V-1c. Photos page The Die Pair Table on page 12 helps summarize the key identifying obverse and reverse features of the 10 known die marriages, plus several die states. However, it is not a good starting point unless you can already identify some of the above features. 1

2 Obverse Date Positions photo array (zoom in high resolution) Obverses 1 and 5 are in 1 die marriage each. Obverses 2, 3, 4, and 6 are in 2 die marriages each. V-1A is most easily identified from the crack from the foot to K5. V-2 and V-3 (Obv 2) are identified by date left. All other obverses are date right. V-5 and V-7 (Obv 3) are easily identified by horizontal cracks from S5 and S9 to dentils. V-4 and V-11u (Obv 4) are identified by the very low date. V-9u and V-10u (Obv 6) can be identified by the high date. However, V-9ua and V-10u are more easily identified by the crack from K12 to forehead. 2

12 Die Pair Table (zoom in) The following pages have further details on each of the 10 known die marriages. The counts for examples, appearances, and the roster of highest grade examples are based on images downloaded from websites in 2017 and 2018 which were of sufficiently high grade and high resolution (500 x 500 when cropped to the coin) for me to attribute them, and a few coins from private collections. 28 New and/or previously unpublished results in this study 1. Detailed information on date and mint mark location for all known dies. 2. V-7 was minimally described, but is simply the marriage of the V-5 obverse and V-2 reverse. 3. V-8u is a marriage of a new obverse with the reverse of V-9ua previously described by Crain. 4. V-11u is a marriage of the V-4 obverse with a new reverse with different mint mark position. 5. Die line splitting F A on the V-3 reverse. 6. Detailed information on die cracks, highlighting the more unique cracks which should make attribution easier. Example: V-5 and V-7 are quickly identified by the cracks S5 left and S9 right. 7. Rarity estimates for each die marriage and major die state, based on exhaustively attributing auction images back to 2009 and earlier. Note that Crain had already identified the rarest die state - the V-1c cud. Obsolete V- numbers 1. V-1 All example of the V-1 die marriage that I have seen have the V-1A cracks. The uncracked V-1 might exist; if so it is rare. 2. V-6 Blythe (1992) used this number. It is called V-1c here, because it is the final die state of V-1, and not a separate die marriage. Discussion The main contribution of this attribution guide has been to assemble the previously known die marriage info from many sources into a single place with good photos, to make attribution easier. A few minor discoveries were made along the way. Hopefully the photos and details provided here will help spread this knowledge. Possible future research - V-9ua: photos would be helpful. - Does V-4 or V-11u have the earlier obverse die states? - Clashes could be studied. The plentiful die cracks, date position and mint mark position were sufficient to identify all the listed die marriages and major die states, so I did not find it necessary to study the clashes. 28
